If no invoice is displayed, use the app’s Help or support section and quote the order ID; the current apps do not publish one universally verified set of menu taps.
When you obtain the document, check the supplier name and GSTIN, invoice number and date, service description, taxable value, tax rate, and tax amount. Food orders can combine restaurant-service GST with separately taxed platform or other charges, so the total on an in-app bill is not enough to verify the tax.

What GST should appear on a food-delivery order?
The applicable rate depends on the service line, not simply on the fact that you paid through a food-delivery app. In a Rajya Sabha answer dated 1 April 2025, the Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue, stated that restaurant services other than those at specified premises attract GST at 5% without input tax credit, whether supplied directly or through an e-commerce operator such as Zomato or Swiggy. The same answer reported 18% GST for other app services, including platform services.
Restaurant-service GST: 5% without input tax credit
The 5% figure applies to the restaurant service category described in that ministerial answer. “Without input tax credit” means the supplier cannot claim input-tax credit against that restaurant-service rate. It does not mean that every line on your order is taxed at 5%.
#1 Best Overall
An invoice may show the restaurant’s taxable value and then split the tax into CGST and SGST, or show IGST where that treatment applies. A representative Swiggy restaurant-service invoice includes separate CGST and SGST amounts, along with the taxable values and total. Do not assume a particular split unless the document actually shows it.
Platform and other app services: 18% reported in 2025
The same 1 April 2025 answer identifies 18% GST for other services supplied by food-delivery apps, such as platform services. A platform fee, convenience fee, or another app-service line can therefore have a different tax treatment from the restaurant food service. Read each taxable line and its rate instead of multiplying the grand total by 5%.
A dated policy qualification
The Ministry’s 1 April 2025 answer also said that the GST Council had considered a proposal to clarify the rate on delivery of food in orders placed through apps at its 55th meeting on 21 December 2024, and recommended that the issue receive further examination. That is a dated procedural statement, not evidence of a later rate change. Check the date on any invoice and the current tax position if you are reviewing an older order or filing a return.

How to locate an invoice in the app
Platform interfaces change by operating-system version, account type, location, and order status. No official, current customer-facing source identified a complete, click-by-click invoice path for both major platforms. Use the general workflow below as a search method, not as a guaranteed sequence of labels.

- Open your order history. Sign in to the same account used to place the order and open the completed or past-orders area.
- Select the relevant order. Match the restaurant, date, delivery address, amount paid, and order identifier before opening any document.
- Look for an invoice or document control. Common labels include “Invoice,” “Tax invoice,” “Download invoice,” “View bill,” or a download icon. The wording and location can change after an app update.
- Save the original file. Download the PDF or other file supplied by the platform rather than relying only on a screenshot. Keep the order ID in the filename, such as
order-ID-gst-invoice.pdf. - Check for separate documents. An order may have an in-app bill, a restaurant-service tax invoice, and a document for platform charges. Open each document that the order page provides.
- If no invoice appears, contact support. Use the order’s Help or support route and provide the order ID, order date, and the exact document you need. A Swiggy corporate report confirms an in-app Help Section for order-related guidance, but it does not prescribe a current invoice-specific tap sequence.
Do not treat an email, payment notification, or restaurant receipt as a tax invoice merely because it contains a total. Verify the tax particulars before filing it for records.
Tax invoice, in-app bill, and receipt: what each document proves
Documents connected with one order can cover different services and can therefore show different totals. Use the issuer, service description, and tax fields to identify what you are looking at.
| Document | Issuer or supplier details | Service covered | Tax information to inspect | Identifiers and use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurant-service tax invoice | Supplier name, address, and GSTIN; the restaurant may be named even when the app delivers the document | Restaurant service supplied with the food order | Taxable value, applicable rate, and CGST/SGST or IGST amounts where shown | Invoice number/date and order ID; primary document for checking restaurant-service GST |
| Platform-service tax document | Platform or other service supplier name and GSTIN when issued | Platform, convenience, or another app service | Its own taxable value, rate, and tax amount; the 2025 Ministry answer reports 18% for other app services such as platform services | Its invoice number/date and any linked order reference |
| In-app bill or order summary | May identify the platform, restaurant, or both | Payment summary that can bundle food, delivery, platform fees, discounts, and taxes | May show tax lines, but a summary is not automatically a tax invoice | Order ID and paid total; useful for reconciling payment |
| Restaurant receipt or printed bill | Restaurant name and address; tax registration details vary | Restaurant’s sale or service as recorded by the restaurant | Use only the tax fields actually printed; do not infer missing GST particulars | Useful for comparison, but different formatting or totals do not by themselves establish an error |
A representative Swiggy invoice contains an order ID, invoice number and date, a service description, taxable values, CGST and SGST amounts, and a total. That example illustrates the fields to look for; it does not establish that every order or every platform uses the same layout.
Invoice fields to check, in order
Indian GST invoice rules list the particulars needed to identify the supplier, transaction, taxable value, and tax. Check the following fields before accepting a downloaded file as complete.

- Supplier name, address, and GSTIN. Record the legal supplier shown on the document. An order can involve a restaurant supplier and a platform supplier, so note whether the invoice names one or both.
- Invoice number and issue date. These make the document traceable and distinguish it from a payment receipt. Confirm that the date relates to the order you selected.
- Order ID or other transaction reference. Match this identifier to the order-history entry, payment record, and any support conversation.
- Description of service. It should be clear whether the line is restaurant service, platform service, delivery, or another charge. A generic “tax” line is not enough to determine the rate.
- Taxable value. This is the amount on which the stated rate is applied. It may differ from the amount you paid after discounts or from the order’s grand total.
- Tax rate. Check the percentage printed next to each taxable service. The Ministry’s 1 April 2025 answer reported 5% for the specified restaurant-service category and 18% for other app services such as platform services.
- Tax amount and component. Where shown, distinguish CGST and SGST/UTGST from IGST. Add the components only when they belong to the same taxable line and invoice.
- Total. Compare the invoice total with the amount paid, while allowing for discounts, delivery charges, tips, credits, refunds, and separate platform documents.
How to reconcile the GST with what you paid
1. Start with the paid amount
Open the payment confirmation or order summary and record the amount actually charged to your card, bank account, wallet, or cash order. Also record the order ID and date.
2. Separate the order components
List food or restaurant-service value, delivery or platform charges, discounts, tips, and any other fee exactly as the order displays them. Do not combine a platform fee with the restaurant’s taxable value merely because both appear on one checkout screen.
3. Match each line to an invoice
For every taxable component, identify the document that names its supplier and shows its rate. If the platform gives one restaurant invoice and a separate platform invoice, reconcile each invoice to its corresponding line rather than expecting either invoice to equal the whole checkout total.

For a line with taxable value V and stated rate r, the tax shown should correspond to V × r, subject to the way the invoice rounds amounts. If CGST and SGST are displayed separately, their sum should equal the total tax for that line. If the document shows IGST, do not add CGST or SGST again.

5. Explain differences before disputing them
A difference between the in-app bill and a tax invoice can arise because they cover different services, apply discounts in different places, or display tax-inclusive totals differently. Compare the supplier, service description, taxable value, and invoice identifiers before deciding that GST was calculated incorrectly.

Zomato’s stated process
Zomato’s current online-ordering terms state that, effective 1 January 2022, it is responsible for collecting and paying tax for customer orders of restaurant service. The terms describe this as the e-commerce operator paying the tax under section 9(5) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act. They also state that Zomato generates the restaurant-service tax invoice on the restaurant partner’s behalf in accordance with applicable GST law.
Those are Zomato’s stated terms and process. They should not be generalized to every platform, seller type, or charge appearing on a food order. Use the supplier and GSTIN printed on your particular document.

A representative Swiggy restaurant-service invoice demonstrates that an order document can contain the order ID, invoice number and date, service description, taxable values, CGST, SGST, and total. Swiggy’s corporate reporting also confirms an in-app Help Section for order-related guidance. It does not publish a universal, current set of invoice-download steps, so support may be necessary when the invoice control is absent.

What to do when the invoice is missing or appears wrong
No download button is visible
Reopen the completed order, check any “View bill,” “Help,” or overflow menu, and look for an email sent to the account used for the order. If no tax document is available, contact support from that order and include the order ID, date, restaurant, paid amount, and request for the restaurant-service or platform-service invoice specifically.
The document has no GSTIN or supplier name
Ask support to provide a tax invoice containing the supplier’s legal name, address, and GSTIN. Do not fill in a GSTIN from a web search or assume that the platform’s registration number belongs to the restaurant.
The app bill and printed bill differ
Compare whether the documents cover the same service. Check discounts, delivery or platform fees, tax-inclusive versus tax-exclusive presentation, and whether one document is a receipt while the other is a tax invoice. Keep both documents with the order ID and ask support to explain any unmatched line.
The total does not equal the amount paid
Look for a refund, cancelled item, wallet credit, tip, promotional discount, or a separate invoice for platform charges. Reconcile the payment record with all invoices, not just the restaurant-service document.
The order is old
Save the invoice, payment record, and support correspondence together. Tax rules and app interfaces can change; retain the document’s issue date and do not apply a current rate to an older transaction without checking the relevant period.
How to save records that remain useful
- Download the original invoice file and keep a backup outside the app.
- Use a filename containing the order ID, invoice number, and date.
- Store the in-app bill or payment confirmation alongside the tax invoice so totals can be reconciled later.
- Keep separate files when restaurant-service and platform-service invoices are issued separately.
- Do not edit the PDF or screenshot; if you annotate it, retain the untouched original.
- For a business record, confirm with your tax adviser whether the document and underlying expense meet your record-keeping and credit requirements. The 5% restaurant-service rate described by the Ministry is expressly without input tax credit.
How to read the result
A complete check answers three separate questions: who supplied each service, what taxable value was assigned to it, and which rate and tax amount were applied. The Ministry of Finance’s 1 April 2025 figures—5% without input tax credit for the specified restaurant-service category and 18% for other app services such as platform services—belong to different service categories. The invoice, not the grand total on the checkout screen, is the document that shows how your particular order was classified.
