The gold price must rise enough to cover the dealer’s spread and your holding costs before you have a realized profit. The safest process is to choose standardized bullion, obtain written terms from an established dealer, verify what you are buying, and decide in advance how and where it will be stored.
This is general purchase education, not an individualized investment or tax recommendation. Gold prices, premiums, resale spreads, storage fees, and insurance terms change.

What physical gold is—and what gives it value
The United States Mint defines a bullion coin as “an investment-grade coin that is valued by its weight and fineness of a specific precious metal.” Weight is the amount of gold in the item; fineness is its purity. Those two measurements, rather than a dealer’s sales description, are the starting point for valuing ordinary bullion.
Bullion is different from commemorative and numismatic material. A bullion coin or bar is primarily priced according to its gold content. A rare or collectible coin may also be priced for age, scarcity, condition, design, or provenance. That additional value can be difficult to evaluate and may not be recognized by the next dealer who buys from you.

- ✔️Each coin contains 1/10 oz of gold.
- ✔️Obverse: Lady Liberty holding a torch with an olive branch.
- ✔️Reverse: The Type 1 reverse, used from 1986-2021, shows a male bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, where a female awaits with her young. The Type 2 reverse, introduced in 2021, shows a bold close-up portrait of an eagle.
- ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.
The Mint says the U.S. government guarantees the weight, content, and purity of its bullion coins. Do not extend that guarantee to bars or coins produced by other mints without checking the specific product and seller.
Decide what you are buying before contacting a dealer
Set the purpose and time horizon
Physical gold can serve different purposes: a tangible holding outside the banking system, portfolio diversification, or a long-term store of value. Those purposes do not require the same product or access plan. If you may need the money soon, the dealer spread, shipping time, and resale process matter more than a marketing claim about scarcity.
Write down the amount you can commit without jeopardizing emergency savings, debt payments, or near-term expenses. Then decide whether you want direct possession or metal held by a custodian. Direct ownership gives you control over the item but creates security, insurance, and record-keeping responsibilities. Custodial storage may provide professional security but adds fees and requires you to verify ownership and custody.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a measurable product
Before asking for a quote, specify the metal, total weight, purity, product type, and number of pieces. Ask for the exact item rather than accepting a broad phrase such as “premium gold” or “rare gold.” A quote should identify the product’s weight and fineness and state whether the price is locked for a particular period.
Coins, bars, and standard bullion formats
The Mint lists American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins in four sizes. It also describes the American Buffalo as a one-ounce gold bullion coin. These are examples of standardized formats, not proof that one format is always cheaper or easier to sell.
| Format described by the Mint | Gold weight | What the buyer should verify |
|---|---|---|
| American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin | One troy ounce | Purity, all-in purchase price, written buy-back price, and resale conditions |
| American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin | One-half troy ounce | Purity, all-in purchase price, written buy-back price, and resale conditions |
| American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin | One-quarter troy ounce | Purity, all-in purchase price, written buy-back price, and resale conditions |
| American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin | One-tenth troy ounce | Purity, all-in purchase price, written buy-back price, and resale conditions |
| American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin | One troy ounce | Purity, all-in purchase price, written buy-back price, and resale conditions |
The available evidence does not establish a universal premium advantage for bars or coins, a universal resale advantage for coins, or a best format for every buyer. Compare actual quotes for the same gold weight and purity instead of relying on rules of thumb.
When smaller pieces may help
Fractional coins allow a holder to sell less than a full ounce. That flexibility can be useful if you expect to liquidate in stages, but the relevant comparison is the price per unit of contained gold and the dealer’s buy-back terms. Do not assume that flexibility is free; obtain the premium and resale quote for each size.

When larger pieces may help
Larger coins or bars consolidate more gold into fewer items, which can simplify records and storage. The decision still turns on the delivered price, authentication arrangements, and the dealer’s willingness to buy that exact product. A larger item is not automatically less expensive or more liquid.
Spot price, premium, and spread
What is the spot price?
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes spot as the cash price for immediate delivery, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. It is a reference for the value of the gold content, not the final retail price of a coin or bar.
What is the premium?
The Mint explains that bullion coins are priced from the prevailing market price of the metal plus a premium covering minting, distribution, and marketing. A dealer may also add charges for payment processing, shipping, insurance during transit, or other services. Ask whether each charge is included in the quoted total.
What is the spread?
The spread is the difference between what a dealer charges you and what the dealer will pay when you sell. Dealers generally sell above spot and buy back below spot. The premium alone does not tell you the cost of exiting the position; request the actual buy-back price for the precise product.
Recommended Free Tools
A simple model is:
- Retail price: the spot value of the product’s contained gold, plus the dealer premium and additional charges.
- Buy-back price: the amount the dealer currently offers to pay you, subject to any stated conditions.
- Break-even requirement: the buy-back value must exceed your original outlay plus holding costs before you have a nominal profit.
The CFTC advisory uses a hypothetical $2,000 spot price and a half-ounce coin to explain the mechanics. That is a teaching example, not a current gold quote. Use a dated quote when making an actual purchase.
Compare a quote on an all-in basis
Request the same information from each dealer so that a low headline premium does not hide a high payment or shipping charge.
| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Metal content | What are the exact weight and fineness? | Lets you compare products by the same amount of contained gold. |
| Total price | What is the delivered price, including every fee? | Shows your actual cash outlay rather than an advertised starting price. |
| Quote validity | How long is this price locked? | Gold prices and dealer quotes can change while payment is arranged. |
| Buy-back | What will you pay today for this exact item? | Reveals the likely exit price and spread. |
| Resale conditions | Are there minimum quantities, documentation rules, or product restrictions? | Conditions can reduce the practical value of a quoted buy-back price. |
| Shipping and payment | What are the shipping, payment, cancellation, and return charges? | These costs affect break-even and may differ by payment method. |
| Authentication | What weight, content, or authenticity guarantee is provided? | Clarifies what happens if the item is disputed or fails verification. |
| Storage | Where is the metal held, and what are storage, insurance, and administration fees? | Ongoing charges reduce returns and help you test whether the metal exists. |
How to buy physical gold step by step
- Define the specification. Record the product type, gold weight, fineness, number of pieces, and whether you want delivery or custody storage.
- Find several established dealers. The Mint recommends local or national coin and precious-metal dealers. For an online seller, verify a physical address, operating history, and the identities of the business owners or salespeople.
- Check complaints and regulatory records. The CFTC/FINRA advisory recommends checking local consumer organizations, your state attorney general, and your state securities regulator for complaints. Search for complaints or criminal allegations connected with the dealer’s owners or sales staff.
- Request a written, all-in quote. It should identify the exact item, weight, fineness, price, quote-expiration time, shipping, payment, insurance, cancellation, and return terms.
- Request the buy-back quote before paying. Ask what the dealer would pay for the same product now, whether the offer is guaranteed or indicative, and whether any commissions or minimums apply.
- Verify stored-metal details. If the seller will hold the gold, obtain the storage location, legal owner, custodian, insurance arrangement, fee schedule, inspection or reporting process, and written proof of your ownership and custody.
- Use a payment method and delivery process you understand. Confirm when the price becomes fixed, when title passes, how shipment is insured, and what signature or inspection procedure applies.
- Inspect and document the purchase. Keep the invoice, product description, serial or bar identification where applicable, payment record, shipping record, and all correspondence. Store copies separately from the metal.
- Recheck the exit plan. Save the dealer’s buy-back terms and identify at least one alternative route for obtaining a resale quote. Do this before an urgent need for cash arises.
Dealer due diligence and fraud warnings
Retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level, according to the CFTC/FINRA advisory. That does not mean every dealer is dishonest; it means you must perform checks that a federal retail-dealer licensing system would otherwise provide.

- Verify that the named business, physical address, phone number, and payment recipient match one another.
- Do not send money based only on a claim that a product is “government backed.” Verify which government guarantee, if any, applies to the specific item.
The advisory warns that some fraud cases charged customers for storage or insurance on metal that did not exist. A storage invoice is not proof of custody. Ask for documentation that identifies the metal, the custodian, your ownership interest, and the insurance coverage.

The CFTC/FINRA advisory distinguishes bullion, whose value is based on investment-grade purity and weight, from numismatic coins, whose value may depend on rarity and collectibility. It calls “semi-numismatic” a made-up industry term without special meaning and warns that collectible premiums can be used to justify overinflated spreads.
That warning does not establish that every collectible coin offer is fraudulent. It does mean you should be able to explain, in plain terms, what makes the item collectible, how the premium was determined, who the likely buyers are, and what a dealer will pay if you sell immediately.
Safe storage for directly owned gold
Home storage
A home safe is one possible storage method, but no safe model, security rating, installation method, or insurance outcome is established here. If you keep gold at home, evaluate fire and burglary risk, who knows about the holding, how access is controlled, and how you would recover after theft or a disaster.
The CFTC warns that home-stored metal may not be covered by a standard homeowners policy. Ask your insurer in writing whether bullion is covered, under what limits and exclusions, and whether a separate endorsement or policy is required. Never assume that a safe automatically creates insurance coverage.
Professional or third-party storage
Third-party storage can reduce the physical-security burden but introduces fees and custody questions. Before agreeing, identify the facility, legal owner of the metal, whether your holdings are allocated or pooled, insurance provider and limits, withdrawal rules, audit or inspection arrangements, and every recurring administrative charge.
Keep statements and ownership records independently of the provider. If you cannot determine where the metal is held or what document establishes your claim to it, you do not have enough information to evaluate the arrangement.

Self-directed IRA storage is different
For a retirement-account purchase, the CFTC/FINRA advisory says the metals must be held by the IRA trustee or custodian. That is not the same as buying coins personally and placing them in a home safe. Rollover and self-directed IRA rules are complex, and tax treatment depends on the facts. Obtain current Internal Revenue Service guidance and advice from a qualified tax professional before moving retirement funds.

- The initial dealer premium over the spot value of the gold.
- Payment-processing, shipping, and transit-insurance charges.
- Storage fees, insurance premiums, and administrative charges.
- Costs associated with selling, including the spread, commissions, shipping, or authentication.
- Any tax imposed by your jurisdiction; state and local treatment varies and requires current, location-specific guidance.
Because these costs differ by product, dealer, location, and date, obtain dated written figures rather than relying on a universal percentage.
How to sell and evaluate your exit price
Start with the dealer’s current buy-back quote, then obtain at least one independent comparison for the same weight, fineness, and product condition. Ask whether the quote is firm, how long it lasts, how payment will be made, and whether the dealer deducts shipping, testing, commissions, or other charges.
Compare the net amount you would receive with your original all-in cost and the storage and insurance expenses paid since purchase. A higher gold price does not necessarily produce a profit if the spread and holding costs are larger than the increase.
Do not assume that the dealer who sold the item will always provide the best resale price. Keep your documentation, but understand that a buyer may still test the item and apply its own conditions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing premium percentages without comparing dollars
A premium percentage can obscure shipping, payment, and other charges. Compare the delivered dollar price per unit of contained gold and the written buy-back quote.

Assuming a government guarantee covers every product
The Mint’s guarantee applies to the weight, content, and purity of its bullion coins. It does not automatically cover another mint’s coin, a private bar, the dealer’s solvency, or your resale price.
Buying from a cold caller
Unsolicited contact is a risk signal, not proof of fraud. End the conversation, research the seller independently, and obtain competing written quotes before proceeding.
Confusing storage paperwork with proof of metal
Require documentation of the metal’s location, your ownership, custody, insurance, and fees. The CFTC has warned about schemes that charged storage and insurance for nonexistent metal.
Putting retirement metal in personal possession
IRA-owned metals must be held by the IRA trustee or custodian under the advisory’s description. Do not treat an IRA transaction as an ordinary home-storage purchase.
A practical decision framework
Use these questions to make the decision auditable:
- Can I state the exact weight and fineness of the product?
- Do I know the complete delivered price and how long it is valid?
- Do I have a written buy-back quote and understand the spread?
- Have I checked the dealer’s address, history, complaints, and ownership?
- Do I understand shipping, payment, cancellation, return, and authentication terms?
- Can I explain where the gold will be held and what proves my ownership?
- Have I confirmed insurance rather than assuming a homeowners policy applies?
- Have I separated direct ownership from self-directed IRA rules?
- Can I cover storage and other holding costs without needing an immediate sale?
If any answer is no, pause the transaction and obtain the missing information in writing. Physical gold is easier to buy than to evaluate after the money has changed hands, so the comparison and custody work belongs before payment.
