Assessing CAR Group (ASX: CAR) requires three separate judgments: how its digital vehicle marketplaces make money, whether reported growth is broad and repeatable, and what price you are paying for the earnings and cash those businesses may produce. CAR Group is not a carmaker or a conventional dealer. It owns and operates online marketplaces in Australia, South Korea, the United States, Chile and Brazil, with a majority interest in Brazil’s webmotors.
The most recent full-year figures available in the company’s FY26 results release (year ended 30 June 2026) show reported revenue of AUD 1,253 million, reported net profit after tax (NPAT) of AUD 314 million and reported EBITDA of AUD 667 million. On the company’s pro forma, constant-currency basis, EBITDA was AUD 700 million, up 12%. Those are different accounting bases and should not be blended. A delayed third-party snapshot put the share price at AUD 22.64 and trailing P/E at 27.32 on 13 October 2026; that is a dated market observation, not an intrinsic-value conclusion.

What CAR Group does
A portfolio of vehicle marketplaces
CAR Group describes itself as a global digital marketplace company that combines brands, technology, data and advertising to help people buy and sell vehicles. Its named portfolio is:
- carsales in Australia
- Encar in South Korea
- Trader Interactive in the United States
- chileautos in Chile
- webmotors in Brazil, in which CAR Group holds a majority interest
The assets serve different vehicle markets and have different levels of digital adoption, competitive intensity, currency exposure and economic cyclicality. That geographic spread can diversify the group, but it also means a group-level growth rate can hide sharply different local conditions.

How the marketplace creates value
A marketplace has to attract both supply and demand. Vehicle sellers provide inventory; buyers provide audience and enquiries. Dealers are more likely to pay when listings generate useful leads, and buyers are more likely to return when inventory is broad, current and easy to search. CAR Group can then sell additional visibility, data or transaction services around that activity.
This is an analytical way to understand the model, not a company-published formula. When reviewing the business, connect five operating questions:
- How large and engaged is the audience?
- How much vehicle inventory is listed, and how quickly does it turn over?
- How many enquiries or leads does that inventory generate?
- How many dealers and other customers pay, and how much does each contribute?
- What share of customers buys premium products, advertising or transaction services?
Growth is higher quality when customers pay more because the platform delivers more value, rather than only because prices or acquired revenue have increased.

How CAR Group makes money
Revenue comes from several sides of the marketplace. The precise percentage mix by product and segment is not established by the figures cited here, so assess each stream qualitatively and confirm detailed composition in the full annual report before relying on a segment mix calculation.
| Revenue stream | Typical payer | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer subscriptions and listings | Vehicle dealers | Dealer numbers, retention, listing volumes, package pricing and revenue per dealer |
| Premium placement or “depth” products | Dealers and other professional sellers | Penetration, incremental yield, conversion from standard products and customer return on spend |
| Private-seller advertising | Individuals selling vehicles | Listing volumes, paid-listing rates, pricing and time to sale |
| Lead and enquiry products | Dealers or other commercial customers | Lead volume, quality, conversion and willingness to pay |
| Advertising and media | Manufacturers, dealers and other advertisers | Advertiser diversity, campaign demand, audience reach and revenue volatility |
| Data and analytics | Commercial customers | Data usefulness, renewal rates, product adoption and incremental margins |
| Inspection, finance and transaction services | Buyers, sellers, dealers or finance partners, depending on market | Service volumes, take-up, revenue per transaction, credit or operational risk and capital required |
Product expansion matters because it can raise revenue per vehicle, dealer or visitor without requiring a proportional increase in audience. It can also make results less dependent on basic listing subscriptions. The trade-off is that newer services may require technology investment, staff, partnerships or balance-sheet commitments before they become material.

What FY26 performance says about growth
Reported results versus pro forma results
For the year ended 30 June 2026, CAR Group reported:
| Measure | FY26 result | Change or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | AUD 1,253 million | Up 6% in reported Australian-dollar terms |
| Reported EBITDA | AUD 667 million | Up 8% on the reported basis |
| Reported NPAT | AUD 314 million | Up 14% on the reported basis |
| Pro forma EBITDA | AUD 700 million | Up 12% in constant currency |
| Pro forma revenue | AUD 1,253 million | Up 12% in constant currency |
The company says its pro forma presentation normalises for the Australian Tyres exit and certain non-recurring or non-cash items. Reported figures are the statutory-style results investors see in the financial statements; pro forma figures are management’s analytical view after specified adjustments. Compare like with like: reported revenue with reported revenue, and pro forma constant-currency growth with the same measure in another period.
Regional growth and contribution
FY26 constant-currency revenue growth differed by region:
| Region | FY26 revenue | Constant-currency growth |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | AUD 519 million | 7% |
| North America | AUD 327 million | 12% |
| Latin America | AUD 251 million | 19% |
| Asia | AUD 145 million | 15% |
Latin America had the fastest stated rate, but Australia was the largest listed regional revenue contributor. A sensible assessment therefore uses both growth percentage and economic weight. Also ask whether growth came from local operating performance, acquisitions, pricing, mix or currency translation. Constant-currency growth removes exchange-rate movement for comparison; it does not describe the amount ultimately reported in Australian dollars.
Five-year historical context
CAR Group’s FY25 full-year results presentation reported these FY21–FY25 compound annual growth rates:

| Measure | FY21–FY25 CAGR | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Pro forma revenue | 14% | Company-published pro forma, non-IFRS measure |
| Pro forma EBITDA | 14% | Company-published pro forma, non-IFRS measure |
| Adjusted NPAT | 25% | Company-published adjusted, non-IFRS measure |
| Adjusted EPS | 14% | Company-published adjusted, non-IFRS measure |
These rates describe a specific five-year period and do not establish that the same pace will continue. Adjusted and pro forma measures are internal non-IFRS measures; the FY25 presentation states they were not audited or reviewed. Before using adjusted NPAT or EPS in a valuation, identify every adjustment and reconcile it to reported earnings where possible.
Management’s FY27 outlook and the drivers behind it
In the FY26 results release dated 10 August 2026, management forecast FY27 pro forma EBITDA growth of 10% to 13% and adjusted NPAT growth of 9% to 12%, both in constant currency. This is guidance, not an achieved result. The release identifies macroeconomic conditions, customer demand, inflation, geopolitical conditions and foreign-exchange movements as factors that can affect the outcome.
The strategic levers described in the FY26 materials include:
- continued product innovation and investment in artificial intelligence;
- greater adoption of premium dealer products;
- growth in media and advertising;
- inspection and transaction services;
- connected-vehicle ecosystems; and
- ongoing development of the existing marketplace brands.
Translate each lever into a measurable test. For example, premium-product growth should show up in penetration and customer yield; media expansion should show up in advertiser numbers, campaign spend or revenue diversification; inspection and transaction initiatives should show service volumes and economics; and artificial-intelligence investment should improve product engagement or operating efficiency rather than merely increase expense.
William Elliott, Managing Director and CEO, said in the H1 FY26 results release: “The Group operates in large, underpenetrated markets with multiple levers to drive future growth for our shareholders.” That is management’s view. It should be tested against actual market data, customer behaviour, competitive conditions and the cash produced after investment.

A practical framework for judging growth quality
Start with the customer engine
Track audience and inventory together. Rising visitors without useful inventory may not improve dealer economics; rising listings without buyer engagement may not support pricing. Look for evidence on active listings, enquiry volumes, dealer counts, dealer retention, paid-product penetration and revenue per paying customer.
Separate price, volume and mix
Revenue can rise because more vehicles are listed, because prices increase, because customers buy richer products, or because a new service is added. Those causes have different durability. Volume-led growth can be cyclical; price increases can face customer resistance; mix improvement can be attractive if the premium product delivers measurable value; acquisitions can add scale but also integration and capital-allocation risk.
Check operating leverage and cash conversion
Compare revenue growth with EBITDA growth, then compare EBITDA with operating cash flow. Investigate working-capital movements, capital expenditure, capitalised software, lease payments, taxes and one-off cash costs. A marketplace may report strong EBITDA while reinvesting heavily in technology, acquisitions or service operations. Cash available after those investments is the amount relevant to debt reduction, dividends and further growth.
Examine geographic concentration and currency
Review each region’s local growth, margin and strategic role. A high-growth market can be small in absolute terms, while a mature market can fund group cash generation. For Australian investors, exchange rates can move reported revenue, profit and the value of overseas assets even when local-currency operations are unchanged.
Review capital allocation
Assess acquisitions, divestments, dividends, buybacks, debt repayment and internal investment together. The Australian Tyres exit is one reason the company presents normalised pro forma figures; it also illustrates why changes to the portfolio affect reported comparisons. Ask whether management’s returns on reinvested capital exceed the return available from reducing debt or returning cash.

How to assess CAR Group’s valuation
Interpret the dated P/E snapshot correctly
Stock Analysis reported a delayed CAR share price of AUD 22.64 and a trailing P/E of 27.32 on 13 October 2026. The figure is third-party market data, delayed and tied to the earnings period used by that provider. Refresh the price and earnings data immediately before making an investment decision. A trailing P/E of 27.32 means the price was 27.32 times the provider’s trailing earnings measure at that date; it does not say what the shares are worth under future conditions.
To interpret any multiple, specify the numerator, denominator, date, currency and accounting basis. A P/E based on reported trailing EPS is not directly comparable with one based on adjusted forward EPS.
Use several valuation lenses
| Valuation question | Evidence to assemble | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What earnings are being valued? | Reported EPS, adjusted EPS, trailing period and forecast period | Adjustments can materially change the denominator |
| How durable is growth? | Historical CAGRs, FY27 guidance, product penetration, market conditions and acquisition contribution | A high multiple requires confidence in future earnings, not only past growth |
| Does profit become cash? | Operating cash flow, capital expenditure, working capital and free cash flow | Cash funds debt service, dividends and reinvestment |
| What claims does the balance sheet have? | Net debt, interest expense, leases and acquisition commitments | Enterprise value and equity value respond differently to leverage |
| How does the market price compare? | P/E, EV/EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield for a justified peer set | Peer comparisons are meaningful only with the same date, currency, forecast period and accounting basis |
| What could go wrong? | Downside assumptions for demand, listings, yield, currencies, margins and discount rates | Sensitivity reveals whether the valuation depends on optimistic inputs |
Build a scenario rather than a single target
- Choose the earnings base. Start with reported earnings, then create a clearly labelled adjusted case only for items that are genuinely non-recurring and reconcile the adjustment.
- Set operating assumptions. Model revenue by region or product where disclosure permits. State assumptions for listings, dealer yield, premium-product penetration, advertising and transaction services.
- Apply the outlook cautiously. Use the 10%–13% FY27 pro forma EBITDA growth range as management guidance in a reference case, not as a guaranteed result. Build lower and higher cases independently.
- Translate profit into cash. Deduct taxes, working-capital needs, capital expenditure, software investment and other recurring cash requirements.
- Value the cash flows. A discounted-cash-flow model requires explicit forecasts, a terminal-growth assumption and a discount rate. Show how the result changes when each assumption moves.
- Cross-check with market multiples. Compare P/E and EV/EBITDA with businesses that have similar marketplace economics, growth, margins, geography and accounting treatment. Do not select peers solely because they produce a low multiple.
- Stress the balance sheet and currency. Test higher interest costs, weaker local currencies, slower dealer demand and acquisition spending. Record whether the equity value remains acceptable under those cases.
The available figures do not establish an intrinsic-value estimate, peer-relative conclusion or price target. They provide inputs for a model whose conclusion depends on assumptions about growth, reinvestment, risk and the earnings definition used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRisks and common analytical mistakes
- Mixing accounting bases: comparing reported NPAT with pro forma EBITDA or adjusted EPS without explaining the adjustments can create a misleading margin or multiple.
- Treating constant currency as reported growth: constant-currency rates are useful for operating comparison, but Australian-dollar results also reflect exchange rates.
- Annualising guidance: FY27 ranges are management expectations subject to demand, inflation, geopolitical conditions and FX; they are not evidence that the range has been achieved.
- Using one P/E as a verdict: the multiple changes with the share price and earnings period, and says nothing about cash conversion, debt or future growth on its own.
- Assuming the fastest region is the biggest opportunity: growth percentage must be considered alongside revenue contribution, profitability and reinvestment needs.
- Claiming a moat or market share without evidence: the cited company materials establish the portfolio and selected growth figures, but not independent market-share estimates or a quantified competitive advantage.
- Ignoring portfolio changes: exits, acquisitions and non-recurring items can distort year-on-year comparisons and make pro forma reconciliation essential.
- Overlooking execution costs: artificial intelligence, connected-vehicle products and transaction services may require sustained technology, compliance, partnership and operating investment.
A repeatable CAR Group analysis checklist
Before forming a view, record the following in one worksheet and date every figure:
- reported revenue, EBITDA and NPAT;
- pro forma or adjusted figures, with a reconciliation of adjustments;
- regional revenue, local-currency growth and reported-currency growth;
- dealer and private-seller activity, listing and enquiry trends;
- premium-product penetration and revenue per customer;
- advertising and data revenue indicators;
- inspection, finance and transaction-service volumes and margins;
- operating cash flow, capital expenditure and free cash flow;
- net debt, interest costs, leases and acquisition commitments;
- management guidance versus the latest actual result;
- share price timestamp, trailing or forward EPS and the exact P/E definition; and
- downside, base and upside assumptions for demand, yield, currencies and discount rates.
Update the worksheet after each results release rather than carrying forward an old multiple or guidance range. This separation keeps the business analysis, operating forecast and valuation conclusion distinct.
