A restaurant merger can change what you pay, how your rewards account works, and whether a nearby location keeps operating—but none of those outcomes is automatic. The practical answer depends on whether the companies competed in your area, what the deal documents promise, and what the operator decides for each store.
Use three separate checks: compare local prices and value, read the affected rewards program’s current terms and notices, and verify your specific address through official location information. A merger headline or a chainwide store count cannot answer all three questions for an individual diner.

What a restaurant merger changes—and what it does not
When two restaurant companies come under common ownership, they may stop making independent decisions about prices, promotions, menus, suppliers, staffing, and locations. The effect is strongest when the businesses previously competed for the same diners in the same trade area. If they served different markets or customer segments, the immediate effect on your choices may be smaller.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s 2023 Merger Guidelines state: “A merger eliminates competition between the merging firms by bringing them under joint control.” That describes the competitive mechanism, not a prediction about any particular restaurant. The agencies examine evidence such as whether the companies monitored each other’s prices, advertising, products, and facility locations.

The Federal Trade Commission describes a consumer-protection goal of preventing deals likely to “reduce competition and lead to higher prices, lower quality goods or services, or less innovation.” Those are possible harms that merger review seeks to prevent. They are not findings that every completed restaurant deal will raise prices, reduce quality, or close stores.
A merger announcement also does not tell you whether a specific franchise will change. The transaction may involve corporate restaurants, franchised restaurants, real-estate leases, or only selected assets. Local franchise agreements, lease terms, labor conditions, remodel plans, and sales performance can produce different results at neighboring locations.

If two nearby brands once competed for the same customers, each had a reason to keep prices, portions, service, and promotions attractive. Joint ownership can remove that direct pressure. The combined company might raise a menu price, reduce a discount, change a portion, add a mandatory fee, or discontinue a lower-priced item. It might also keep prices steady or lower them if it expects efficiencies, wants to fill underused restaurants, or is responding to strong competition from other operators.

Antitrust analysis is market-specific. A deal involving two restaurants several miles apart may have little effect if many close substitutes remain. A deal that removes two of the few comparable restaurants in one neighborhood can matter more.

What the available price evidence actually shows
There is no established restaurant-industry average price change that can be applied to every merger. An FTC study published in 2013 examined grocery-retail transactions and found mixed results. The figures are useful to show why deal effects vary, but they are not restaurant estimates.

The study’s scope matters: the results concern grocery mergers and the methods used in that 2013 analysis. They do not establish that restaurant mergers generally raise or lower prices.
How to measure a particular restaurant deal
To decide whether a named transaction is affecting your budget, create a dated, like-for-like comparison rather than relying on anecdotes.

- Choose comparable items. Compare the same entrée, meal bundle, beverage size, side, and add-ons. Note whether the listed price is for dine-in, pickup, or delivery.
- Include the total cost. Record mandatory service charges, packaging fees, delivery fees, taxes, and required minimums separately. A menu price can stay flat while the final bill rises because of a new fee.
- Record value, not just price. Note portion size, included sides, refill policies, substitutions, loyalty discounts, and limited-time offers.
- Keep before-and-after dates. Save dated menus, receipts, screenshots, or statements. A price change observed weeks after a transaction may also reflect food costs, wages, rent, taxes, seasonality, or a routine menu reset.
- Check alternatives. If independent restaurants or other chains remain nearby, compare their equivalent meals. A combined company’s pricing power depends partly on the options diners still have.
Attribute a change to the merger only when credible deal-specific evidence supports that connection—for example, a company announcement that links a new pricing strategy to the transaction. Otherwise describe the timing without claiming causation.

What happens to restaurant rewards points and benefits
There is no standard rule that makes points transfer, disappear, merge, or remain unchanged after a restaurant merger. The result depends on the legal entities, program terms, technology systems, and transition plan for that specific deal. A rewards program can be operated by a parent company while individual restaurants remain under separate franchise agreements, so ownership alone does not answer the account question.
Possible transition outcomes
A company might combine two account systems, keep them separate, create a new program, limit where points can be earned, or set a deadline to use existing rewards. It could change earning rates, redemption menus, status qualifications, coupon rules, blackout dates, or expiration periods. None of these is automatic.

- Whether points can be transferred between the two brands or only earned separately.
- How status, birthday benefits, coupons, free-item certificates, and promotional credits are treated.
- Any expiration date, conversion formula, minimum balance, or deadline to accept new terms.
- What happens to disputed points, refunded orders, and accounts that have not been used recently.
A practical rewards-account checklist
- Capture your balance. Save a screenshot showing points, status, certificates, and expiration dates before any announced transition.
- Read the current terms. Use the official rewards page, account notice, email, and frequently asked questions for the exact brand and transaction date.
- Look for a direct statement. The useful wording is whether accounts are combining, points are transferable, existing rewards remain redeemable, or a deadline applies.
- Use expiring benefits carefully. If the official notice gives a redemption deadline, plan a purchase before it rather than assuming the balance will be converted.
- Keep support records. Save confirmation numbers and correspondence if a balance fails to migrate or a reward is rejected.
If no official notice describes a change, the accurate conclusion is “no confirmed change found.” Silence is not a guarantee that terms cannot change. Check the program again before placing an order, especially after a new app, website, or legal-terms update appears.

What can happen to a nearby restaurant
Ownership does not determine one store’s fate
An acquisition or merger can be followed by a remodel, temporary closure, permanent closure, sale to another franchisee, refranchising, conversion to another concept, or co-location of two concepts. It can also leave a restaurant operating normally. The ownership change itself does not identify which path a particular address will take.
One company-specific illustration comes from Dine Brands’ fiscal-year 2025 filing. The company reported acquiring 47 Applebee’s franchise restaurants in November 2024, 10 IHOP restaurants in March 2025, and 12 Applebee’s restaurants in May 2025, and described reporting those restaurants as company-owned. The filing also recorded some acquisition-related closure costs and described dual-branded restaurants in which IHOP and Applebee’s concepts operate under separate franchise agreements within one location.
Dine Brands’ fiscal-2025 release reported 40 new restaurant openings and 13 restaurant closures from Applebee’s and IHOP franchisee development activity in the fourth quarter of 2025. In its August 2026 second-quarter results, the company described continued dual-brand expansion as part of its growth strategy. These figures describe one company’s acquisitions and format decisions; they are not a general restaurant-merger closure rate. They also concern acquisitions of franchised locations, not a claim that two independent restaurant corporations merged.
How to verify your local address
- Check the official locator. Search the exact street address, not just the city. Note whether the listing says open, temporarily closed, coming soon, or permanently closed.
- Look for a dated announcement. Check the brand, franchisee, landlord, shopping-center operator, or local authority for notices about a remodel, conversion, sale, or closure.
- Distinguish the status. “Planned,” “temporarily closed,” “converted,” “sold,” and “permanently closed” describe different situations. Do not treat an unstaffed phone line or a dark dining room as proof of a permanent closure.
- Confirm the concept. A dual-branded site may still be open while operating two menus under separate agreements. Check ordering pages and posted hours for each concept.
- Recheck after the transition. Store pages, hours, and menus can change during construction or a franchise transfer. Verify before making a special trip.
A chain’s total location count cannot establish whether your branch is open. Aggregate openings and closures include many unrelated franchise decisions and may occur in different states or countries.

How merger review relates to your restaurant choices
In the United States, the DOJ and FTC assess whether a transaction may substantially lessen competition. Their analysis can include direct overlap, customer substitution, local geography, pricing documents, marketing, capacity, and remaining alternatives. The agencies may challenge a deal, seek remedies, or allow it to proceed. Agency review is an assessment of likely competitive effects, not a promise about a particular menu or address after closing.
Separate four stages when reading coverage:
- Announcement: the companies propose a transaction; terms and closing conditions may still change.
- Review: regulators analyze competition and may request information or bring a legal challenge.
- Closing: ownership transfers, subject to the final transaction terms.
- Post-closing strategy: the owner and franchisees decide prices, menus, technology, remodels, and locations within the agreements and applicable law.
Market definitions and merger laws differ by jurisdiction. A U.S. agency statement should not be treated as a ruling in another country, and a regulator’s decision does not settle rewards or store-level questions that the deal documents do not address.

Use this compact worksheet for a specific transaction. Keep the source and date beside every entry so that a later change is distinguishable from an old notice.

If the evidence answers only one row, limit your conclusion to that row. A price notice does not prove points will transfer; a rewards email does not prove a local restaurant will close; and a corporate acquisition count does not identify your address.
What diners should do with their budget
Keep a copy of your normal order and its final receipt before a transition if the restaurant is a frequent expense. Compare the full total—not only the entrée price—after the deal closes. If a rewards balance is material to your budget, record it and use only the redemption deadlines stated by the official program. For a location you rely on, identify a nearby alternative before a remodel or conversion affects your routine.
The most reliable conclusion is transaction-specific: a merger can alter competitive pressure, rewards administration, and store strategy, but the outcome must be verified separately for prices, accounts, and addresses.
