How Much Does Dog Training Cost? U.S. Price Ranges for 2026

In the U.S., published 2026 guides put group dog-training courses at roughly $100–$300, private instruction at about $45–$200 or more per hour or session, and board-and-train programs in the thousands. These are guide estimates, not a dependable national average or a quote for your area. The format, unit, training goal and what is included can change the total substantially.

Dog training cost ranges by format

The figures below come from published guides and use different units and program definitions. Treat them as planning reference points; ask local providers for an itemized quote for the same format and scope.

Training format Published U.S. guide range How to interpret it
Group classes About $100–$300 for a puppy or beginner course (Petunia, 2026); $100–$300 for a six-to-eight-week course (DogTrainerMatch, 2026). Petunia also lists $30–$80 per class or $150–$400 per general group program. Course length and program type differ, so compare the number of classes and total program scope.
Private instruction $45–$200 or more per hour, with a commonly cited $50–$150 hourly average (Whole Dog Journal, 2025); $75–$200 per hour in DogTrainerMatch’s 2026 guide. These are overlapping published guide estimates, not independently established national statistics. Confirm whether a quoted session is an hour and whether travel is extra.
Private packages About $450–$1,200 or more (Petunia, 2026). Packages commonly bundle multiple sessions. Ask what support and follow-up accompany them before comparing the total price.
Behavior-modification specialist work $100–$300 or more per session (Petunia, 2026). This is a guide range for specialist work, not a rate every behavior case requires; scope and the trainer’s specialization matter.
Board-and-train Programs can cost thousands (Petunia, 2026); DogTrainerMatch gives a broad guide of $1,000–$3,000 per week. Durations and inclusions vary. Compare the entire program and owner handoff rather than assuming a weekly rate determines the full cost.

What determines the total bill?

Location, the type and complexity of training, the trainer’s experience and credentials, session length and frequency, specialization, and travel fees can all affect cost. A package may reduce the effective price per session while committing you to a larger total payment, so compare the amount paid with the sessions and support delivered.

  • Training goal: Puppy foundations or basic manners may have a different scope from addressing a specific household problem or seeking specialist behavior support.
  • Trainer and location: Local rates and relevant experience vary. Ask about credentials and methods that fit your goal rather than treating price alone as a measure of suitability.
  • Program structure: Check how many sessions are included, their length, and whether travel, supplies, homework review, between-session contact or follow-up costs extra.
  • Owner coaching: Find out how the trainer will help you practice and maintain skills at home; for residential programs, clarify what the transition back to the owner involves.

A DogTrainerMatch directory spot check in 2026 found that 30 of 3,481 profiles displayed a specific dollar amount; among those 30, 17 showed per-session prices and 21 consultation fees. The page describes this as a spot check, not a market survey, so it should not be generalized to trainers across the U.S. ( DogTrainerMatch directory.)

How to compare quotes fairly

  1. Match the format and unit. Check whether a price covers a course, one session, an hour, a day or a week. Do not compare a multiweek group course directly with a private hourly rate.
  2. Match the scope. Tell each provider what you want help with, then confirm what the offered service addresses.
  3. Calculate the full commitment. Ask for the number and length of sessions or program duration, plus travel charges, supplies and cancellation terms. For packages, compare the total payment as well as the included sessions.
  4. Check trainer fit and methods. Ask about experience and credentials relevant to your goal and what methods the trainer uses.
  5. Confirm owner transfer and follow-up. Ask what coaching, written homework, transition lesson and post-program support are included, and what would cost extra.

Questions to ask before choosing board-and-train

Because a dog learns in a residential setting and then returns home, ask whether owners can visit or observe, what methods are used, what the transition lesson looks like, and what support continues afterward. These are questions to clarify the offer, not guarantees of a particular result. VetCostGuide’s 2026 guide also discusses those points.

Ways to keep training costs manageable

Ask local dog-training clubs whether they offer classes to nonmembers at reduced rates; availability and prices depend on the club. Online or app-based instruction may suit some self-directed owners, but whether it fits depends on the training need. A treat pouch can be a convenient optional aid for practice, not a required purchase.

The most useful next step is to request itemized quotes from providers near you for the same goal and format. No single published guide range can establish what a particular trainer will charge in your location.
