An attacker might substitute a counterfeit, modify firmware, add hidden hardware, or alter what the device displays before you sign a transaction. The reliable defense is layered: buy through an authorized channel, inspect the package, authenticate the device and firmware, initialize it yourself, test wallet-generation randomness when available, and verify every transaction on the wallet’s screen.
If an authenticity or firmware check fails, stop using the device. Create a new wallet on a trusted device and move funds to it; never continue using a backup that may have been exposed.

What a hardware-wallet supply-chain attack is
A supply-chain attack occurs before a wallet is delivered to its owner. The attacker interferes with manufacturing, distribution, storage, or resale so a device arrives looking legitimate but has a hidden advantage for the attacker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe substitution can be obvious—a counterfeit device in a genuine-looking box—or subtle. A genuine device may be opened and modified, loaded with altered firmware, or fitted with hardware that records a PIN, recovery words, or transaction data. A modified wallet can still use authentic chips and may pass a basic software check, making the attack harder to spot.

The attacker’s objectives include obtaining recovery material, bypassing PIN or firmware protections, generating a wallet whose keys are predictable, or changing transaction details shown to you. Trezor’s threat model describes this as an “evil maid” scenario: someone with temporary access replaces or tampers with the device before delivery.
How the attack works
Counterfeit substitution
A counterfeit replaces the device entirely. It may copy the case, logo, cable, manual, and packaging of a genuine model. Its software can present a normal-looking setup while secretly recording the backup you create or directing you to enter an attacker-controlled backup.
Altered firmware
An attacker can install firmware that displays plausible information while exfiltrating secrets or manipulating signing. Secure boot and signed-firmware checks are designed to stop unauthorized code, but their effectiveness depends on the device’s implementation and on you using the manufacturer’s official companion application.
A Ledger security bulletin documented a signature-verification bypass that could have enabled modified firmware in a supply-chain scenario. The bulletin said that particular issue could not extract private keys or the seed and could be detected when the device connected for management operations. It illustrates why firmware verification and timely official updates matter; it is not evidence that every device with a packaging problem is compromised.
Hardware implants and modified genuine units
A genuine wallet can be opened, modified, and resealed. A hidden component could capture inputs, influence random-number generation, or alter the connection between the secure element and the display. Because the main chips remain genuine, a modified unit may pass some authenticity checks.
Packaging and distribution interference
Packages can be opened and closed without obvious damage. Ledger’s Donjon threat model warns that classic holographic seals can be cloned and that a package can be reopened without damaging the seal. An intact seal is therefore evidence to inspect, not proof of an untouched supply chain.
What an attacker must accomplish
The attacker does not necessarily need to steal an existing seed. Before you initialize the wallet, the main opportunities are to make you use a counterfeit, cause the device to generate keys the attacker can predict, or persuade you to enter a recovery phrase supplied by someone else. After initialization, a modified display or signing path could try to make you approve a different recipient than the one shown on your computer.
That is why a supply-chain defense covers the entire first-use sequence. The seller, packaging, device identity, boot process, wallet-generation method, backup handling, and transaction confirmation each answer a different question. Skipping one step can leave an otherwise strong device exposed to a different attack path.
Why one check is never enough
Each control covers a different failure mode. A seal addresses the package, not the firmware. A firmware signature addresses code, not a substituted device. A genuine secure element does not prove that the wallet was initialized safely or that you protected its backup. Treat authenticity as a chain of checks rather than a single pass/fail signal.
| Control | What it can establish | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized purchase channel | Reduces the chance of an unverified reseller substitution | Does not prove the package was not opened later |
| Package and device inspection | Can reveal missing contents, tampering, or an unexpected model | Cannot prove the internal electronics are untouched |
| Verified boot and signed firmware | Rejects unauthorized software when the implementation is intact | Does not detect every physical modification |
| Device attestation | Lets the companion application verify a device certificate and secure element | Does not protect a backup you voluntarily disclose |
| Entropy or wallet-generation check | Can detect a device that would generate a predictable wallet | Does not validate packaging or transaction-display integrity |
| Trusted display confirmation | Shows the address and transaction details on the wallet itself before signing | Cannot recover funds already sent to a wrong address |
Buy through an authorized channel
Start with provenance. Trezor advises buying from its official shop, its official Amazon storefront, or an explicitly authorized reseller. Avoid marketplace listings where the seller’s authorization is unclear, even if the listing uses the correct model name or photographs.

- Open the manufacturer’s current list of authorized sales channels before ordering.
- Check the seller identity at checkout, not only the marketplace product title.
- Be wary of “open box,” refurbished, returned, or unusually discounted wallets.
- Keep the order record and seller details until setup and authentication are complete.
Buying from a trusted channel reduces substitution risk but does not replace the inspection and initialization steps below.
Inspect the package when it arrives
Use the model-specific authentication guide supplied by the manufacturer. Compare the expected device, cable, documentation, and packaging with what you received. Look for opened seams, re-applied labels, mismatched serial information, missing accessories, or a device that appears previously configured.
- Photograph the unopened package if you see anything unusual.
- Compare the contents with the current official guide for your exact model.
- Check any tamper-evident feature, but do not treat an intact seal as conclusive.
- Stop if the package is open, incomplete, or inconsistent with the guide.
- Do not connect or initialize a suspicious unit; contact the manufacturer through its published support channel and preserve the packaging.
A wallet that arrives with a written recovery phrase, a PIN, or an already-created account is not ready for use. Reject it. The owner—not the seller—must generate the wallet backup.
Authenticate the device and firmware
Use the official companion application
Install the manufacturer’s official wallet application from the manufacturer’s own distribution page. Let it perform the device-authenticity and firmware checks before creating accounts or moving funds. Do not rely on a download link sent by a stranger or an unsolicited support message.
Understand verified boot
On Trezor devices, a write-protected boardloader checks signatures before later boot stages run. Unauthorized firmware is rejected or can trigger a wipe. A rejection is a security signal, not an inconvenience to bypass; do not search for an unofficial “fix” that disables the check.
Understand device attestation
Ledger devices use a device certificate and a secure-channel process to prove the authenticity of the secure element to the wallet application. Follow the application’s result exactly. If it reports an authenticity failure, treat the wallet as untrusted even if the screen and case look normal.
Keep firmware current through the official path
Firmware updates should be offered and verified by the manufacturer’s application. Do not install a file supplied by a forum participant, reseller, or support account. Save the recovery backup offline before any update and follow the model’s documented recovery procedure if the update fails.
Initialize the wallet yourself
- Connect the authenticated device to the official companion application.
- Select the option to create a new wallet, not to restore a seller-provided wallet.
- Allow the device to generate the recovery backup locally.
- Write the words on the manufacturer’s recommended offline material; do not photograph, scan, email, or store them in cloud notes.
- Confirm the words on the device when prompted and store the backup where unauthorized people cannot reach it.
- Set a device PIN and record any model-specific passphrase information separately and securely.
Trezor states that the wallet backup is generated locally and is never transmitted outside the device. A website, computer prompt, chat agent, or email form should never ask you to type it. The only legitimate entry is a recovery flow directed by the device and confirmed on its screen.
Check wallet-generation randomness when supported
A fake or tampered device can produce a wallet that looks normal but is predictable to an attacker. Trezor Suite’s entropy check combines entropy supplied by the application with a committed contribution from the device. This combination can expose a device that would otherwise generate predictable wallets.

Run the check when your model and firmware support it, and do so before depositing significant funds. An entropy result does not prove that the package was untouched or that every hardware component is genuine; it is one layer in the chain.

Verify every address and transaction on the device
Malware on a computer or phone can replace a copied cryptocurrency address or alter transaction details in the wallet application. Before signing, compare the complete recipient address, amount, network, and fee shown on the wallet’s own display with the information you intend to approve.
- Use the device screen, not only the computer or phone screen, as the final confirmation surface.
- For a first transfer, send a small test amount and confirm that it arrives at the intended address.
- Reject a transaction if even one character or amount differs.
- Never approve a prompt you do not understand merely because the companion application says it is required.
Trusted confirmation protects the details you are about to sign. It cannot reverse a transaction you already approved or recover funds sent to an incorrect address.
What to do when a check fails
Firmware or authenticity failure before funding
- Disconnect the device and stop trying to “repair” the failure with unofficial software.
- Do not create accounts, enter a backup, or deposit funds on that device.
- Contact the manufacturer using a verified support address and provide the model, application message, and seller details.
- Return or replace the unit through the authorized channel.
A device arrives initialized or with a prewritten backup
Do not erase the supplied backup and continue. The seller or an intermediary may know those words. Return the wallet and obtain a new unit. A legitimate wallet generates its backup during your own initialization.

The backup was entered online or disclosed
Assume the backup is compromised. On a trusted, newly initialized wallet, create a new backup and move all assets immediately. Do not wait to see whether funds disappear. Replace the suspect device and backup, and review approvals or permissions on the affected accounts where the relevant network supports them.
Funds already sit on a suspect wallet
Use a newly generated wallet on a trusted device and transfer the funds as soon as practical. Do not reuse the suspect backup, even if the device later passes a software check. Trezor’s response guidance is to recover or move funds with a newly generated wallet, then replace the counterfeit device and backup.
How to compare hardware wallets for supply-chain resilience
When evaluating competing models, compare the controls and the documented response—not just the casing or the presence of a seal.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Provenance and distribution | Does the manufacturer publish an official shop and authorized-reseller policy? |
| Hardware authenticity | Can the companion application verify a device certificate or secure element? |
| Boot integrity | Is there a write-protected or otherwise verified boot process that rejects unauthorized firmware? |
| Wallet-generation randomness | Is there a documented entropy or randomness check, and when does it run? |
| Trusted display | Are complete recipient and transaction details shown on the device before signing? |
| Firmware transparency and updates | How are updates delivered, signed, and recovered if an update fails? |
| Failure response | Does the manufacturer clearly instruct users to stop, replace the device, and migrate funds after an authenticity failure? |
No single sticker, seal, software result, or genuine-looking chip proves that the entire physical supply chain is clean. A wallet is strongest when independent controls reinforce one another and the user follows the manufacturer’s recovery instructions.
Questions to answer before connecting a new wallet
Confirm which official application you will use, where its download comes from, and how the manufacturer describes an authentic device result. Have offline backup material ready before initialization, and decide where the backup will be stored. This prevents rushed setup, when a user is more likely to accept a seller-provided phrase or type words into an unexpected prompt.
Also decide how you will test the first receiving address. The address must be displayed on the wallet itself, not merely copied from the computer. A small initial transfer gives you a chance to catch an address-replacement problem before sending a larger balance, although it does not replace checking every later transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that defeat the controls
- Assuming a familiar logo or hologram proves authenticity.
- Buying from a marketplace seller whose authorization was never checked.
- Accepting a device that has already been initialized because the discount seems attractive.
- Entering recovery words into a website, support form, desktop dialog, or chat conversation.
- Ignoring an authenticity warning because the device still displays a balance.
- Checking only the first and last characters of an address rather than the complete address shown on the device.
- Continuing to use a backup after it was exposed, even if no theft is visible.
Each mistake removes a separate layer. A secure element cannot protect words that were voluntarily disclosed, and a perfect package cannot compensate for signing an address that was changed by malware.

A practical pre-funding checklist
- Seller is the manufacturer or an explicitly authorized reseller.
- Package contents match the current model-specific guide.
- No seal, label, cable, or enclosure appears opened or replaced.
- Device is not initialized and contains no prewritten backup.
- Official companion application reports successful authenticity and firmware checks.
- Backup is generated on the device and stored offline by you.
- Entropy or wallet-generation check is completed when supported.
- First receiving address is verified on the device screen.
- Every outgoing transaction is checked in full on the device before signing.
- No person, website, or support channel has received the backup.
Following this sequence does not make a hardware wallet invulnerable. It does make the most common supply-chain paths—counterfeit substitution, unauthorized firmware, predictable wallet generation, and address replacement—far harder to exploit, while giving you a clear response when a check fails.

Can a hardware wallet be tampered with before delivery?
Yes. A supply-chain attacker can substitute a counterfeit, alter firmware, open and modify a genuine unit, or interfere with packaging before delivery. The device may still look normal, so use several independent checks.
How do I know a Ledger or Trezor is genuine?
Buy through the manufacturer or an explicitly authorized reseller, compare the contents with the model’s current authentication guide, and run the official companion application’s authenticity and firmware checks. Ledger uses device certificates and a secure-channel process; Trezor uses signed boot stages and documented authenticity checks.
Is an intact holographic seal enough?
No. Ledger Donjon warns that classic holographic seals can be cloned and that packages can be reopened without damaging them. Treat a seal as one inspection clue, not proof of an untouched device.
Can a fake hardware wallet steal my seed phrase?
It can. A counterfeit or modified device may record the backup you create, provide a backup already known to an attacker, or generate predictable keys. Never use a prewritten phrase, and never type your backup into a website or support conversation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What should I do if my wallet fails an authenticity or firmware check?
Stop using it immediately. Do not enter a backup or deposit funds, avoid unofficial repair software, contact the manufacturer through a verified channel, and return or replace the device. If funds are already present, move them to a newly generated wallet on a trusted device.
What if I already entered my backup online?
Treat it as compromised. Generate a new wallet and backup on a trusted device and move every asset immediately. Replace the suspect device and backup rather than waiting for evidence of theft.
Does an entropy check prove that a wallet is safe?
No. Trezor Suite’s check can detect a device that would otherwise generate a predictable wallet by combining application entropy with a committed device contribution. It does not prove the packaging, hardware, or transaction display is untouched.
Should I use a wallet that arrived with a PIN or recovery words?
No. A legitimate wallet is initialized by you and generates its backup locally. Return a device that arrives configured, with a PIN, or with a written recovery phrase.

The Bottom Line
Supply-chain security is a sequence, not a sticker: use an authorized seller, inspect the exact model, authenticate the device and firmware, initialize it yourself, run an entropy check when supported, and confirm every transaction on the wallet’s screen. Never disclose the backup. If any check fails or the backup may be exposed, stop and migrate funds to a newly generated wallet.
