HostGator vs. Bluehost: A Head-to-Head Comparison for 2026

Short answer: Bluehost is the better default for most beginners building a new WordPress website. Its current plans emphasize guided WordPress setup, AI-assisted site creation, managed updates, weekly backups, malware scanning, staging, and a published 99.99% shared-hosting uptime promise. HostGator is still a reasonable choice if you prefer conventional Linux hosting, broad PHP/MySQL application compatibility, cPanel-style workflows, and advertised 24/7 live support.

Neither provider is automatically the best choice for a high-traffic, revenue-critical website. The right decision depends on renewal pricing, the number of sites you need, included security and backup features, support access, and your likely upgrade path. Prices and features referenced here were checked on August 18, 2026; promotions and checkout totals can change.

Migration Free WordPress migration tool Free migration tool advertised, with eligibility and scope to verify

These are not perfectly equivalent products. Bluehost’s figures come from a WordPress pricing page showing promotional and renewal rates, while HostGator’s published chart exposes regular pricing and full-term totals. Always compare the exact checkout cart.

Plan One-month regular price Three-year total Monthly equivalent
Baby $24.19 $593.61 $16.49
Business $30.79 $791.61 $21.99
Pro $38.49 $1,068.81 $29.69

HostGator states that its selected full term is billed upfront and that promotional rates apply only to the first invoice before renewal at the regular rate. Source: HostGator’s hosting price chart.

The basic calculation is:

First-term cost = advertised monthly rate × number of months + paid add-ons + applicable taxes.

For longer-term planning, add renewal charges, domain renewal, email, security, backups, and any performance products. A low monthly figure may simply be the cost of a 36-month commitment divided by 36. Prices, taxes, preselected add-ons, and promotions must be checked in the final cart.

WordPress experience

Bluehost is the more WordPress-centered option. Its listed features include managed WordPress core updates, a free migration tool, free CDN, weekly backups, free SSL, malware scanning, and staging. Bluehost also promotes AI-assisted website creation, Yoast SEO preinstallation, AI keyword recommendations, and real-time on-page scoring. Those tools can simplify setup, but they do not guarantee better rankings or better performance.

Bluehost says WordPress.org has officially recommended it since 2005. That is a useful credibility signal, not independent proof that Bluehost is the fastest host or that its support is superior.

Bluehost’s current table lists 10 websites and 10 GB of NVMe storage on Starter, and 50 websites and 50 GB on Business. Ecommerce Essentials lists 100 websites and 100 GB. Confirm current limits before purchasing. Source: Bluehost WordPress hosting.

HostGator also offers managed WordPress hosting, but its managed plans should be evaluated from their own feature table rather than assumed to include every feature of standard shared hosting. HostGator is a better fit when you want a more conventional hosting environment and do not want the dashboard and workflow to be primarily WordPress-oriented. Traditional hosting and application compatibility

HostGator’s shared hosting environment is based on Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP and is designed to support thousands of existing applications. That makes it a practical candidate for conventional PHP/MySQL projects, quick application installation, and workflows familiar to traditional hosting users. It does not, by itself, demonstrate better speed or reliability.

DARGO Mini Server – Plug & Play Home Host with No Monthly Fees. 2GB RAM, 128GB SSD
  • TRUE PLUG-AND-PLAY HOME SERVER: Forget complex VPS setups or command lines. Simply connect power and Ethernet to start hosting immediately with zero technical skills required. This managed, all-in-one appliance is the easiest way to run blogs (compatible with WordPress), private applications, and bots directly from home using your own domain.
  • NO MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEES: Stop renting server space. Enjoy a one-time hardware purchase model with absolutely no recurring hosting fees for typical usage. The system includes a generous monthly traffic allowance that covers the needs of almost all personal and small business websites, allowing the device to pay for itself quickly.
  • INSTANT ONE-CLICK APP LIBRARY: Instantly deploy over 50 curated open-source applications without hassle. The diverse ecosystem includes essential tools, compatible with WordPress, Ghost, Nextcloud (for private cloud storage), Joomla, and OpenClaw. Perfect for content management, e-commerce, private email, and business tools.
  • INCLUDES FREE SSL & ENTERPRISE SECURITY: Get professional performance and safety without the extra costs. Seamlessly integrate your existing custom domain or utilize the included free subdomain. Your sites are automatically secured with free SSL certificates, built-in DDoS protection, and global CDN acceleration.
  • TOTAL DATA PRIVACY & OWNERSHIP: Keep your digital assets secure on your own local hardware, not on third-party "big tech" servers. Designed for privacy-conscious individuals, creators, and small businesses seeking platform independence. Includes an intuitive web management portal for complete peace of mind.

Bluehost also offers general hosting products, but the strongest case for it in this comparison is its WordPress-oriented setup. Do not compare a Bluehost WordPress plan with a HostGator VPS, cloud product, dedicated server, or ecommerce plan and call the result an apples-to-apples test.

Security, backups, SSL, and CDN

Bluehost states that its WordPress plans include free SSL, daily malware scanning, DDoS protection, and automated weekly backups, with one-click restoration to a clean version. The displayed comparison indicates that Starter includes malware scanning but not malware detection/removal, while Business and Ecommerce Essentials include detection/removal. Check the plan table because security features are not identical across tiers.

These terms describe different protections:

  • SSL: encrypts connections between visitors and the site.
  • Malware scanning: looks for suspicious code; it is not the same as removing an infection.
  • Backup: creates a recovery copy; frequency, retention, and restoration scope matter.
  • CDN: can serve cached assets from locations closer to visitors, but it is not a guarantee of faster uncached page generation.
  • DDoS protection: helps absorb certain denial-of-service attacks, but does not make a shared account invulnerable.

HostGator’s documentation directs customers to its Renewal Center for products such as CodeGuard and SiteLock, indicating that backup and security services may be separate products depending on the plan. A host’s backups should never be your only disaster-recovery copy. Keep an independent, off-host backup of files and databases, and test restoration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance and uptime

Bluehost publishes a 99.99% uptime promise for shared hosting, based on server and Apache performance. It states that a qualifying customer can claim one 5% monthly credit if actual uptime falls below that level, provided the claim is made within 30 days. Mathematically, 99.99% allows approximately 52.6 minutes of downtime per year.

That promise is not the same as independently measured uptime, and it does not guarantee page speed. No controlled hands-on test is available for this comparison, so it would be unsupported to declare Bluehost faster than HostGator or HostGator slower than Bluehost. Storage branding alone also does not prove real-world speed.

If performance matters, test the same site and configuration with:

  • Time to first byte and server response time;
  • Lighthouse or WebPageTest results from several locations;
  • Cached and uncached requests;
  • An uncached WordPress page that exercises the database;
  • Behavior during traffic spikes; and
  • Core Web Vitals after the site is populated with its real theme, plugins, images, and analytics.

Shared hosting remains subject to resource policies, CPU and RAM limits, inode limits, traffic patterns, and acceptable-use rules, even when a plan advertises unlimited sites or storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Support and ease of use

HostGator advertises 24/7 live support on its shared-hosting page. Bluehost’s displayed WordPress table lists 24/7 chat on Starter and chat plus phone support on Business and Ecommerce Essentials. Phone support is therefore plan-dependent at Bluehost, not a universal feature.

Availability does not establish support quality. The important questions are whether the representative can diagnose a server, DNS, PHP, database, or WordPress problem; whether technical escalation is available; and whether the issue is resolved rather than merely redirected to documentation. Without a controlled support test or clearly attributed independent methodology, neither provider should be called “the best” for support.

Migration: free does not mean effortless

Both providers advertise migration tools. Bluehost specifically provides a free WordPress migration tool, while HostGator advertises a free site migration tool and migration information for WordPress. Eligibility, site type, plan, and technical complexity can affect what is actually covered.

A migration tool may not move mailboxes, DNS records, calendars, premium plugin licenses, transactional-email settings, or heavily customized sites perfectly. Use this checklist:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create complete backups of the site files and databases.
  2. Export email and DNS records separately.
  3. Confirm PHP and database compatibility.
  4. Copy the site and test it through a temporary URL or hosts-file override.
  5. Test forms, payments, redirects, cron jobs, SSL, images, plugins, analytics, and checkout flows.
  6. Lower DNS TTL before the switch where practical.
  7. Change DNS and monitor the site and email.
  8. Keep the old hosting active until propagation and mail delivery are confirmed.
  9. Reissue SSL certificates if needed.
  10. Take a fresh off-host backup after the new site is live.

Domains, refunds, and cancellation friction

Both companies advertise first-year domain incentives subject to plan conditions. The domain renews at the then-current regular rate after the first year.

HostGator says its free domain requires a qualifying 12-, 24-, or 36-month Shared, WordPress, or Cloud hosting plan. If qualifying hosting is cancelled during the first year, it says a non-refundable $17.99 domain fee plus applicable taxes may apply. Bluehost similarly states that cancelling during the first year can trigger a non-refundable fee based on the standard domain cost.

Both providers state that a newly registered domain cannot be transferred during the first 60 days. Domain fees and renewal prices can vary by TLD and account terms. If portability matters, consider registering the domain independently. Before cancelling hosting:

  • Confirm that you control the registrar account and DNS;
  • Record nameservers, DNS records, and email settings;
  • Disable automatic renewal if you do not intend to continue;
  • Read the refund and domain provisions; and
  • Do not cancel the old account until the replacement site and email work.

Email is a separate buying decision

Do not assume that a hosting plan includes permanent professional email at no extra cost. Compare mailbox count, storage, trial length, renewal price, spam filtering, sending limits, and administration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluehost’s pricing page shows a Pro Email free trial and says it renews under the applicable regular terms unless cancelled. A free trial is not permanent free email. For organizations that need collaboration, administration, deliverability, and productivity tools, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or another dedicated mail provider may be a better fit than host-provided mail.

Which provider is better for your situation?

Choose Bluehost for a new WordPress site

Bluehost is the stronger default when you want guided onboarding, AI-assisted creation, managed WordPress updates, staging, bundled scanning and backups, a free migration tool, and a WordPress-first dashboard. Choose a plan with phone support and malware removal if those features matter; Starter does not provide the same displayed package.

Choose HostGator for traditional shared hosting

HostGator may suit a PHP/MySQL application, a non-WordPress project, or a buyer who prefers conventional Linux hosting tools and 24/7 live support. Treat its regular renewal prices and possible CodeGuard or SiteLock charges as part of the decision.

Bloggers and small businesses

For a first blog or brochure site, Bluehost’s onboarding and WordPress tooling are usually more useful than a broad list of hosting features. HostGator remains sensible if the site uses a conventional application or you already know its workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple websites

Compare exact website, storage, database, inode, and resource limits. Do not treat “unlimited” as unlimited traffic or guaranteed performance. Bluehost’s displayed WordPress tiers list 10, 50, and 100 websites across the cited plans, but suitability depends on the size and activity of each site.

WooCommerce stores

Use an ecommerce-specific comparison, not an entry-level hosting comparison. Check payment security, backups, staging, object caching, database performance, support, and resource isolation. Bluehost lists Ecommerce Essentials at $14.99/month for 36 months and $21.99/month at renewal, but the price is not evidence that it will handle every store workload.

Developers and agencies

HostGator’s conventional Linux environment may be preferable for broad PHP/MySQL compatibility. Verify SSH, WP-CLI, staging, Git, cron, database, account-isolation, and client-management requirements before committing. For several business-critical sites, managed WordPress, VPS, or cloud hosting may be a better upgrade path.

Existing-site migrations

Either provider may be workable, but audit email, DNS, cron jobs, redirects, licenses, and integrations separately. Keep the old account until the migration is verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-traffic or business-critical sites

Neither entry-level shared plan should be the automatic choice. Consider managed WordPress for specialized support and optimization, or managed VPS/cloud hosting for more predictable resources and scalability. These options generally cost more and may require more administration.

When neither provider is right

Look beyond Bluehost and HostGator if you need guaranteed resources, advanced staging, high availability, enterprise support, transparent month-to-month billing, specialized ecommerce infrastructure, geographic data residency, or documented compliance features. Also look elsewhere if you want a consistently high-performing site without optimizing WordPress or upgrading beyond shared hosting.

Relevant categories include specialized managed WordPress providers, VPS or cloud hosting, an independent domain registrar paired with separate hosting, dedicated business email, and budget hosts with independently verified renewal pricing. Treat any specific alternative’s current price or feature list as a separate research question.

Final verdict

For most new WordPress users, choose Bluehost—but select the plan based on the features you actually need, not just the $3.99 promotional headline. For a traditional Linux/PHP/MySQL project or a buyer who prefers a conventional shared-hosting workflow, HostGator remains a defensible choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying either one, write down the first-term total, renewal total, domain renewal, email cost, backup and security charges, website count, storage, support channel, and cancellation terms. Then confirm every item in the final checkout cart. That simple comparison is more reliable than choosing the provider with the lowest advertised monthly number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bluehost cheaper than HostGator?

Bluehost currently displays lower introductory WordPress rates, but its Starter plan renews at $9.99 per month. HostGator’s published regular WordPress rates range from $16.49 to $29.69 per month on three-year terms. Because the pages present different pricing information, compare the full prepaid term, renewal price, add-ons, domain, email, and taxes.

Does Bluehost include backups?

Bluehost states that its listed WordPress plans include automated weekly backups. That is not the same as daily backups and should not replace an independent off-host backup.

Can I transfer a domain immediately after registering it?

Both providers state that newly registered domains cannot be transferred during the first 60 days. You can still need to manage DNS and site hosting during that period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which is better for a high-traffic website?

Neither entry-level shared plan should be selected automatically for high traffic or business-critical workloads. Compare managed WordPress, VPS, cloud, or specialized hosting with documented resources and support.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Bluehost is the better default for most new WordPress sites; HostGator is better suited to traditional Linux hosting and broad application compatibility. In both cases, judge the purchase by renewal and add-on costs—not the introductory monthly price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
