Canadians can trade in an old smartphone through the manufacturer they are buying from, a wireless carrier, a retailer or buyback service, or a private marketplace. The most convenient option is usually a manufacturer or carrier trade-in; the option that produces the most cash may be a private sale.
Do not compare headline trade-in amounts alone. Check whether the compensation is cash, store credit, a bill credit, an instant discount or a reduction in financing payments—and include any required plan cost, activation fee, financing balance or future return obligation.

Apple Trade In
Apple Trade In is available through Apple’s Canadian online store and Apple retail stores. You can apply an eligible smartphone’s value toward a new Apple purchase, and selected Android phones can be traded toward an iPhone. Apple also offers free recycling for devices with no trade-in value.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
Online trade-ins are handled through a third-party vendor. The initial quote is subject to inspection. Apple’s Canadian trade-in terms say the offer can be revised if the device differs from the description, Find My remains enabled or the phone is not received within the stated period.
Apple is a sensible route if you are already buying an iPhone or another Apple product and value an integrated checkout. It is less suitable if you want unrestricted cash or would rather sell a recent phone privately.
Samsung Canada Trade In
Samsung Canada Trade In accepts selected smartphones, tablets, watches and devices from other brands through the Samsung online store and Samsung Experience Stores. The estimated value is applied as an immediate discount toward an eligible Samsung purchase, rather than being paid as cash.
Online customers receive shipping instructions after ordering and send the old device for assessment. Samsung says leased devices generally are not eligible unless they have first been purchased from the carrier. Some international phones may be accepted, but eligibility and value can vary. Check the exact model, storage capacity and country version in the live tool.
Google Store Canada trade-in
Google’s Canadian Store trade-in is mainly useful to someone buying a Pixel directly from Google. During checkout, Google estimates the value from the model and condition information provided. The estimate can include a promotional amount associated with a particular Google Store offer.
That displayed number is not automatically a guaranteed final value. The phone is assessed after it is received, and the amount can change if its condition does not match the description. A Google Store credit may also be less useful than cash if you were not already planning to buy from Google.
Carrier trade-in programs
Bell Trade-In
Bell Trade-In accepts eligible phones, tablets and watches at participating Bell stores. The device is assessed in store and the resulting certificate can be used toward hardware or accessories at participating locations.
The important distinction is that Bell’s compensation is an in-store certificate, not a cash payout. Confirm that the location participates and that the certificate can be used for the item you intend to buy.
Rogers Trade-Up
Rogers Trade-Up is available when buying a phone online or at a Rogers store. Rogers says it accepts phones, tablets and Apple Watches from any carrier. Depending on the transaction, the trade-in value may lower monthly device-financing payments or be applied as in-store credit toward accessories.
The device must be owned by you. If it is still financed, leased or subject to another carrier obligation, confirm the contract before submitting it. A trade-in quote does not automatically pay off a separate device balance.
FidoTRADE
FidoTRADE is available through Fido stores. Account information and activation credentials must be removed before the device is accepted. Fido states that bill credits can take two to three billing cycles to appear, so this is materially different from an immediate checkout discount.
Do not assume a cracked screen is always accepted or rejected. Enter the exact model and condition into the current quote process, because eligibility can vary by device and promotion.
TELUS Trade-In
TELUS Trade-In is available online and in participating TELUS stores. You receive an estimate, then TELUS or its representative confirms the value after inspection. Online customers use a return label, while in-store customers can complete the process at an eligible location. Credit is applied after the device is received and assessed, and the return can be tracked through My TELUS.
TELUS says submitted devices may be refurbished, upcycled or recycled. That does not mean every device qualifies for monetary credit; a dead, obsolete or badly damaged phone may instead have only a recycling route.
TELUS Bring-It-Back is not a normal trade-in
TELUS Bring-It-Back lowers monthly device payments by deferring an amount until the end of the two-year term. At that point, you generally choose between returning the phone under the program’s condition and return requirements, or keeping it and paying the original deferred amount.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That deferred amount is not a permanent discount. Cancelling service before the term ends can also trigger the outstanding Bring-It-Back amount under the applicable agreement. Compare the full obligation, including the required plan, financing payments and the possible end-of-term payment, with the cost of buying the phone outright.
A simple hypothetical illustrates the difference: an ordinary trade-in disposes of an owned phone for a confirmed credit today. Bring-It-Back reduces monthly payments now but leaves you with a return-or-pay decision later. The lower advertised monthly price does not by itself prove that the phone costs less.
How to compare the real value
Use the same phone details—brand, exact model, storage, condition and ownership status—when requesting quotes from at least two routes. Then calculate:
Net cost = device price
+ required plan cost
+ financing or activation fees
+ taxes
+ deferred balance or return obligation
- confirmed trade-in credit
- confirmed promotional credits
For carrier offers, calculate the total over the complete 24-month financing term. Separate the cost of the plan you would otherwise choose from the extra cost of the required plan. A large trade-in promotion can be outweighed by a more expensive plan, activation fee, financing charge or deferred balance.

Also identify the form and timing of compensation:
- Instant discount: reduces the purchase price at checkout.
- Purchase credit: can be useful only if you intend to buy from that provider.
- Bill credit: may arrive weeks later or over several billing cycles.
- Financing reduction: lowers device payments but may not reduce your wireless-plan cost.
- Store certificate: may be restricted to participating stores, hardware or accessories.
- Promotional bonus: may require a qualifying model, activation, plan or purchase window.
- Deferred return amount: is a future obligation, not the same as a trade-in payment.
What determines a trade-in quote?
Providers commonly consider:
- Exact model and storage capacity.
- Canadian versus international model.
- Whether the phone powers on and charges.
- Screen condition, dead pixels and touch response.
- Back glass, frame, camera lens, buttons, speakers, microphones and charging-port damage.
- Battery condition where requested.
- Liquid or water damage.
- Biometric functions such as Face ID, Touch ID or fingerprint recognition.
- Whether the phone is blacklisted, reported lost or otherwise restricted.
- Whether it is financed, leased or subject to a return obligation.
- Whether activation locks, account locks or mobile-device management remain enabled.
- Whether the device arrives within the provider’s deadline.
Do not rely on a universal rule for cracked screens, dead phones or liquid damage. Eligibility varies by provider, model, promotion and inspection outcome. Accessories are not automatically required unless the specific program says they are.

- Confirm ownership. Check the remaining device balance, lease terms or return obligation. Resolve those issues first; a trade-in quote does not necessarily pay them off.
- Back up your data. Use iCloud or a computer for an iPhone, and Google, manufacturer or computer backup for Android. Confirm that photos, contacts, messages and important files are present on the replacement phone.
- Move authentication. Transfer authenticator apps and passkeys where applicable, record recovery codes, and move an eSIM only after confirming that the new phone is active. Keep the old phone until banking, two-factor authentication and messaging work.
- Remove activation locks. Turn off Find My and sign out of the Apple Account on an iPhone. Remove Google and Samsung accounts from Android phones to disable Factory Reset Protection and related account protection. Remove employer or school mobile-device management. Apple’s preparation guide covers iPhone, Apple Watch and Android trade-ins.
- Remove the SIM. Take out a physical SIM. Follow carrier instructions for transferring or cancelling an eSIM.
- Factory-reset the device. Do this only after verifying the backup and account removal. A reset alone may not remove an activation lock.
- Document its condition. Photograph the front, back, edges, powered-on screen, IMEI or serial label and packaging. Save the quote and terms.
- Deliver it properly. Use the supplied label and packaging where required. Do not improvise packaging for a loose lithium-battery device. Keep the shipping receipt, tracking number and inspection result until the credit is confirmed.
If the provider changes the quote
After inspection, the provider may accept the estimate, lower it, raise it where its terms allow, or determine that the device has no eligible value. Depending on the program, you may be able to accept or reject a revised offer and have the phone returned.
Keep the original quote, photographs, shipping proof and communications. If the credit does not appear, first check whether the device has been received and assessed. For a bill-credit program, check the next billing cycles rather than expecting an immediate discount; Fido specifically says credits may take two to three billing cycles. Contact the provider before cancelling service or disputing a related charge.
Special cases
The phone is still being financed
A financed phone is not automatically yours to trade in without checking the agreement. Rogers says the device must be owned by the customer, and Samsung says leased devices generally must first be purchased from the carrier. Verify the remaining balance and ownership terms with the carrier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe phone is activation-locked
Removing your passcode or performing a factory reset is not enough if Find My, Google Factory Reset Protection, Samsung account protection or mobile-device management remains active. Remove the account first. A locked phone may receive no value or be returned.
The phone is cracked or dead
Enter the exact condition into the provider’s current estimator. A cracked phone may qualify under one offer and fail under another. A dead phone may receive no monetary value and may be eligible only for recycling.
The phone came from another country
Samsung says some international phones may be accepted, but model compatibility, wireless bands, warranty status and resale demand can differ from Canadian versions. Confirm eligibility rather than relying on the brand name alone.
You change your mind about the new phone
Trade-in timing can interact with a return of the replacement device. Apple’s Canadian terms warn that returning a new device bought with a trade-in can cancel the trade-in and may make recovery of the original device impossible in some circumstances. Read the applicable terms before sending a phone.

The trade-in concerns the device, not usually the phone number. However, a carrier upgrade or switch may involve separate activation, eSIM, financing and number-porting steps. Keep the old phone until the new phone and number work correctly.
Trade-in, private sale or recycling?
| Route | Money | Time and risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer or carrier trade-in | Credit, discount or bill credit; often less than the best private-sale price | Usually convenient, but subject to inspection and program restrictions | Someone upgrading through that manufacturer or carrier |
| Private sale | Often the highest gross price for a recent, working phone | Listing, negotiation, meeting or shipping, payment fraud and dispute risk | Someone who prioritizes cash and can manage the transaction |
| Recycling | Usually no payment | Simple and appropriate for low-value or unusable devices | A locked, obsolete or severely damaged phone |
If you sell privately, disclose the exact model, storage, carrier status and damage. Confirm payment before handing over the phone, but do not expose unnecessary personal information. Compare the expected sale price after platform fees, shipping, taxes and the value of your time—not just the highest listing you see.
Bottom line
Use Apple, Samsung or Google when you are already buying directly from that manufacturer. Check the carrier’s offer when you are upgrading through Bell, Rogers, Fido or TELUS, but compare the complete plan and financing cost. Treat TELUS Bring-It-Back as a return-or-pay arrangement rather than an ordinary trade-in. Sell privately when maximum cash matters and the phone is recent and in good condition. Recycle when the device is obsolete, locked, badly damaged or not worth the effort.
