First Horizon Corporation reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $883 million, about $6.37 million below the $889.37 million analyst consensus, while adjusted earnings per share of $0.53 edged past the $0.52 estimate. The bank nevertheless posted a $94 million GAAP net loss available to common shareholders, or $0.20 per diluted share, because accounting for a planned sale of roughly $4.5 billion of residential mortgages produced a large one-time charge.
What First Horizon reported for the quarter
The results cover the quarter ended September 30, 2026. On the non-GAAP measure that excludes notable items, adjusted EPS was $0.53, versus a $0.52 consensus estimate. Revenue was $883 million, compared with the $889.37 million consensus reported by Yahoo Finance, a shortfall of approximately $6.37 million.

The GAAP result was sharply different: net loss available to common shareholders was $94 million, equal to $0.20 per diluted share. GAAP includes the effects of the mortgage transaction and other notable items, whereas adjusted EPS removes those items. The two figures therefore describe different accounting views of the same quarter rather than a mathematical contradiction.

Why adjusted earnings were positive while GAAP earnings were negative
First Horizon reclassified approximately $4.5 billion of selected lower-yielding residential mortgages to held-for-sale status after agreeing in early October to sell the portfolio. The earnings presentation records a $473 million pre-tax loss on the pending sale. That accounting effect was the main reason the reported GAAP result fell below zero; it is not evidence that ordinary lending across the bank suddenly became unprofitable.

Other notable items included a $45 million provision reversal, $3 million of restructuring expense and a $5 million Visa-derivative valuation expense. Taken together, the presentation lists $347 million of notable items after tax, or $0.73 per share. Adjusted EPS excludes these notable items, which is why it remained slightly above the analyst estimate even as GAAP earnings showed a loss.
What the mortgage transaction is intended to change
Management describes the sale as a strategic reduction in residential mortgages and part of a broader realignment of the mortgage business. The stated objectives are to create incremental balance-sheet capacity, improve the liquidity profile and increase earnings per share and return on tangible common equity (ROTCE).

Timing and projected benefit
The planned sale was expected to settle in early fourth quarter 2026. First Horizon estimates that the transaction could add about 4%, or $45 million, to 2027 after-tax earnings and improve ROTCE by approximately 150 basis points. Those are management’s forward-looking estimates, measured against the consensus forecast available on October 2, 2026, rather than realized results.

The estimate also excludes additional potential benefits from redeploying capital into higher-yielding loans. That condition matters: the projected accretion depends not only on completing the mortgage sale but also on putting the released balance-sheet capacity to work at attractive yields. Actual results could differ if the transaction, funding conditions or loan demand change.

Balance-sheet and credit context
At September 30, period-end deposits were $67.7 billion and period-end loans were about $59.8 billion. Net charge-offs were $36 million, or 0.22% of total loans. The company reported a 10.3% common equity tier 1 (CET1) ratio after the transaction-related effects, while tangible book value per share was $13.84.
These figures provide context for the mortgage decision. The sale is large relative to the bank’s loan book, but the reported capital ratio remained 10.3% after the charge and reclassification. Investors will need to distinguish the immediate reduction in reported book value from the possible future benefit of a smaller, higher-yielding mortgage exposure.

How to read the result
First Horizon’s quarter had three separate takeaways. Revenue modestly missed the analyst forecast, adjusted EPS modestly beat it, and GAAP earnings absorbed a substantial charge tied primarily to the planned mortgage sale. The loss therefore reflects the timing and accounting of a strategic portfolio transaction more than a broad collapse in the bank’s lending operations. The transaction’s eventual value will be judged by its closing, the resulting capital and liquidity position, and management’s ability to redeploy funds into more profitable loans.
