The Fidelity outage described in this headline was a historical incident on Monday, May 12, 2025—not an ongoing outage. Shortly after the 9:30 a.m. Eastern market open, customers reported login and access problems affecting Fidelity.com, Active Trader Pro and Fidelity’s mobile apps. Fidelity acknowledged the disruption and later said it had been resolved the same day.

Some customers said they could not view accounts, place or confirm orders, or manage positions during a market rally. However, the available evidence does not establish how many customers were affected, the aggregate value of any losses, the technical cause, or a blanket compensation program.

What happened during the Fidelity outage?

Reports began minutes after the U.S. market opened on May 12, 2025. Customers described problems authenticating, loading Fidelity’s website, opening the mobile apps and connecting to Active Trader Pro.

Fidelity’s public acknowledgment said that some customers were experiencing issues with Fidelity.com, Active Trader Pro and its mobile applications. The company said engineers were working urgently to restore service and apologized for the disruption.

Customer reports also mentioned slow account updates, difficulty reaching support and trouble placing or confirming trades. Those reports are firsthand accounts, not proof that every customer, account or order-entry channel was affected.

How widespread was it?

A snapshot cited by Cybernews showed Downdetector reports divided approximately as follows:

Reported problem Share of submitted reports
Login problems 79%
Website problems 12%
Brokerage-platform problems 9%

These were user-submitted report categories at a particular moment. They were not Fidelity’s customer-impact statistics, a count of unique users or an audited measure of the outage’s scope.

When was the problem resolved?

Fidelity later said the issue had been resolved, according to a subsequent community discussion. That means the broad incident should not be described as a continuing Fidelity outage in 2026. Some individuals may have continued to experience access problems after the general service recovery, but that does not establish that the company-wide incident remained active.

No technical root cause was disclosed in the statements covered by the available reporting. There is also no verified public announcement of automatic compensation for all affected customers.

Did customers lose money?

Some customers alleged missed profits or losses, including problems involving time-sensitive options and limit orders. Those claims have not been independently verified, and no reliable aggregate loss figure has been established.

It is important to distinguish three different scenarios:

  1. Missed opportunity: You could not access the account and never submitted an order.
  2. Order-entry failure: You attempted to submit an order but received an error or no confirmation.
  3. Processing or execution problem: Fidelity confirmed receipt, but the order appeared delayed, rejected, canceled, duplicated or unfilled.

A displayed quote is not a guarantee of execution. A limit order may fail to fill even when the market appears to reach its limit price because of order priority, available liquidity, timing and the specific venue’s trading activity. Market orders can execute at prices different from the quote shown when prices move quickly. Options spreads can be especially sensitive to liquidity and quote differences.

Fidelity’s trading disclosures discuss factors affecting execution, while its agreements address electronic-service interruptions and circumstances in which communication or system problems may prevent an order from being submitted or executed.

Was Fidelity required to compensate affected traders?

There is no universal answer based solely on the outage. Whether a customer has a viable claim depends on the account agreement, the exact order history and the cause of the alleged loss.

Key questions include:

  • Did Fidelity actually receive the order?
  • Is there an order number, timestamp or confirmation?
  • Was the order rejected, canceled or never submitted?
  • Did the customer receive an execution confirmation?
  • Could the order have filled given the market’s liquidity and conditions?
  • Did the loss result from the outage, or from market movement or a trading decision?

The Fidelity Account Customer Agreement and the relevant electronic-services terms may contain provisions addressing order instructions, system interruptions and liability. The applicable version and account type matter, so customers should not assume that a provision from a current agreement automatically governs every historical account event.

The outage, by itself, is not evidence of securities-law wrongdoing or proof that Fidelity owed every affected customer reimbursement.

How to document a failed or delayed trade

If you believe the outage affected a specific trade, preserve the evidence before deleting messages or changing devices.

Save these records

  • Screenshots of error messages, unavailable pages and order tickets.
  • The exact time of each login or order attempt, including the time zone.
  • The ticker, buy or sell direction, quantity, order type, limit price and duration.
  • Order numbers, confirmation emails, rejection messages and account notifications.
  • Trade confirmations, statements and position histories.
  • Phone records, chat transcripts and support-ticket numbers.
  • Contemporaneous quote screenshots, while recognizing that a quote does not prove an executable fill.

A written timeline is useful: record what you attempted, what the platform displayed, whether any confirmation appeared, when access returned and the price or position afterward.

Evidence is strongest when it shows an order-confirmation number, rejection notice, timestamped submission record or support interaction. A screenshot of a quote, an open order ticket or a trade idea in a text message is much weaker if there is no evidence that an order was submitted.

How to ask Fidelity for a review

Contact Fidelity through its official customer-service channels and request a formal review of the specific access event or order. Fidelity lists customer-service options and directs customers to its support resources, including its official community.

Ask for:

  • The system’s record of the attempted order or login event.
  • Confirmation of whether the order reached Fidelity’s order-management system.
  • The precise rejection, cancellation or error code, if one exists.
  • Clarification of whether the order was received, routed, executed or never submitted.
  • Information about any alternative order-entry route available at the time.
  • The procedure for requesting a trade correction or reimbursement review.

Describe the requested remedy precisely. A claim for an order that Fidelity confirmed receiving is materially different from a claim for a trade that a customer intended to place but could not submit.

If Fidelity denies the claim

Request the decision and the reasons in writing. Keep copies of your complaint, evidence, account records and every response.

If the response does not resolve a documented complaint, consider Fidelity’s formal complaint process and then the appropriate securities-industry or government complaint channel for the issue and jurisdiction. The correct escalation route depends on whether the dispute concerns order handling, account servicing, a registered representative, market conduct or another matter. A regulator’s complaint process does not necessarily provide compensation, and filing a complaint is not the same as proving a claim.

What affected traders should avoid

  • Do not repeatedly resubmit an order unless you know whether the first attempt was received; duplicate submissions can create unintended positions.
  • Do not assume a stale balance means an order failed. An account screen may not refresh even after an order is accepted.
  • Do not assume a failure in one interface proves every route was unavailable. Web, mobile, Active Trader Pro and telephone channels can behave differently.
  • Do not assume every login failure was part of the system-wide outage. Browser extensions, multifactor-authentication problems, connectivity issues and device settings can produce similar symptoms. Fidelity’s login guidance has noted that third-party browser plug-ins may interfere with access and suggested trying incognito mode or another browser.

Should you move away from Fidelity?

One outage does not, by itself, establish that another broker will provide uninterrupted access. Transferring an account can create administrative work and may affect margin, options approval, cash-management features, tax records or access to proprietary services.

A more measured response may be to create a backup workflow or compare brokers before moving. Evaluate:

  • Reliability during market open and major news events.
  • Telephone-trading availability and expected wait times.
  • Order-status transparency and execution reporting.
  • Desktop, web and mobile redundancy.
  • Options, extended-hours and advanced-order capabilities.
  • Customer-service responsiveness.
  • Transfer costs, margin terms, cash-sweep policies and account rules.

Fidelity publishes execution-quality and routing information, including SEC Rule 605 reports. Compare competing brokers using equivalent official disclosures rather than relying only on anecdotal app reviews.

Fidelity later announced Trader+ in September 2025, but that later platform development does not change what happened during the May 12, 2025 incident or guarantee future availability. Features, eligibility and pricing should be checked directly with Fidelity.

What remains unknown

The available public statements do not establish the outage’s technical cause, the exact number of affected customers, the total value of alleged losses or whether Fidelity made internal remediation payments. The clearest verified account is narrower: Fidelity customers experienced access problems around the May 12, 2025 market open; Fidelity acknowledged disruption across its website, Active Trader Pro and mobile apps; and the company later said the issue was resolved.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Fidelity outage was a same-day, May 12, 2025 incident—not a continuing outage. Customers who believe they lost money should document the exact order or access failure and request an account-level review; there is no verified evidence of automatic compensation for everyone affected.
