The transactions increase dollar supply and ringgit demand, tending to push the USD/MYR exchange rate lower. That flow helps explain a recent move, but it is not by itself a forecast for the ringgit: foreign investment, trade performance, investor confidence and expectations for a softer U.S. dollar have also supported the currency.
How exporter dollar sales move USD/MYR
An exporter that earns dollars but pays employees, suppliers or taxes in ringgit must eventually convert some foreign currency. Selling dollars for ringgit adds dollars to the foreign-exchange market while creating demand for ringgit. If other flows do not offset it, the price of a dollar in ringgit falls.

In exchange-rate terms, USD/MYR moves lower when one U.S. dollar buys fewer ringgit. A move from 4.00 to 3.90 therefore represents ringgit appreciation, not a weaker ringgit.
A Reuters report carried by Business Recorder described this pattern during a trading session in which USD/MYR initially rose on short-covering, then gave back most of the gain when Malaysian exporters sold the pair. A Kuala Lumpur-based dealer said: “Exporters are scared of a falling dollar. So they will sell their dollar proceeds whenever they have chances.”

Exporters may accelerate conversion when they expect the dollar to decline. Waiting would risk receiving fewer ringgit for the same dollar proceeds later. Their decisions can therefore reinforce an intraday move, especially when many companies convert around similar payment or repatriation dates.
Why the 2026 ringgit rally has more than one cause
Exporter selling explains a market-flow effect, not the whole currency cycle. Reuters reported that foreign investors put $6.5 billion into Malaysian local-currency debt during 2025, creating another source of ringgit demand. The ringgit had appreciated about 17% against the U.S. dollar since the start of 2024, reaching 3.915 per dollar in early February 2026.

Malaysia’s trade figures also remained supportive. The Star Malaysia reported that trade rose 28.6% year on year to RM336.73 billion in April 2026. Strong export activity can improve the supply of foreign currency, although the exchange-rate effect depends on when companies convert receipts and how much they retain abroad.

What a stronger ringgit means for exporters
The same appreciation that benefits importers can reduce an exporter’s ringgit revenue. Consider a company whose invoice is fixed at $1 million. At USD/MYR 4.00, that sale converts to RM4 million; at 3.90, it converts to RM3.9 million, before fees and hedging. If wages and other costs remain in ringgit, the margin is narrower unless the company raises dollar prices, cuts costs or has protection in place.
The pressure is greatest when revenue is mainly in dollars and expenses are mainly in ringgit. Business Times reported this concern among Malaysian exporters in March 2026, including furniture companies whose sales are mostly denominated in U.S. dollars.

Importers and manufacturers that buy dollar-priced materials experience the opposite effect: a stronger ringgit lowers the ringgit cost of each dollar of imports. An exporter with substantial dollar costs, overseas subsidiaries or dollar debt may also have a natural hedge because its expenses rise or fall with its revenue currency.

How businesses can manage a rising-ringgit period
- Match currencies where practical: use dollar receipts for dollar-denominated expenses or debt before converting the remainder.
- Stagger conversions: a schedule can reduce dependence on one exchange-rate level, although it cannot guarantee a better average rate.
- Set a budget rate: calculate prices and margins at conservative USD/MYR levels so contracts remain viable if the ringgit strengthens.
- Use appropriate hedges: forwards or options can protect a planned conversion, but they introduce pricing, collateral and commitment considerations that require professional advice.
- Monitor customer pricing: renegotiating dollar prices or adding currency-adjustment clauses may protect margins where contracts permit.
What the exporter signal can—and cannot—tell you
Repeated exporter selling can explain why a rally continues after an initial dollar rebound, particularly when companies are reacting to a falling-dollar view. It does not establish that USD/MYR will keep declining. Exporters can pause conversions, importers can buy dollars, investors can withdraw funds, and changes in U.S. interest-rate expectations can quickly alter the balance.

For households or investors watching the pair, the useful distinction is between a flow explanation and a durable trend. Exporter conversions are a near-term supply-and-demand impulse. The sustainability of the ringgit’s appreciation depends on whether foreign inflows, trade performance, confidence and global dollar conditions continue to support it.
