Enterprise AI Company Xembly Ended Its Service in 2024. What Happened to the “New Chapter”?

Xembly ended its customer-facing AI assistant service effective June 1, 2024. The company told users that changes in underlying AI platforms had made the business difficult to operate, said it would wind up Xembly in the following months, and teased a “new chapter.” However, no specific successor product, rebrand, acquisition, or new company has been independently verified in the available reporting.

The short version

Xembly’s web application, Chrome extension, and Slack app stopped serving customers on June 1, 2024. Users reportedly received the shutdown notice around May 30 and had until May 31 to preserve important material, including videos and summaries.

The company’s announcement made three separate points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The customer-facing service would end June 1, 2024.
  • Xembly planned to wind up the business “in the coming months.”
  • The team was working on an unspecified “new chapter.”

Those statements should not be collapsed into a claim that Xembly rebranded or launched a successor. The available reporting verifies the shutdown and intended wind-down, but does not identify what the new chapter became.

GeekWire’s report on the shutdown contains the customer notice, the company’s explanation, and background on Xembly.

What Xembly told customers

Xembly attributed the decision to “recent changes in underlying AI platforms” that had made it difficult to continue operating. That explanation is deliberately broad. It does not establish whether the decisive problem involved model costs, access to third-party systems, licensing, reliability, competition, or a combination of factors.

It also does not prove that a particular AI provider caused the closure or that Xembly’s own technology was abandoned. The safest conclusion is the one the company itself gave: changes in the underlying AI-platform environment made the business difficult to operate.

Customers were given a short preservation window. Until May 31, users could reportedly save videos and share summaries to email, Google Docs, or another destination. After the June 1 cutoff, access through the web app, Chrome extension, and Slack app was expected to end.

What Xembly’s product did

Xembly marketed its assistant, Xena, as an AI “chief of staff” or executive assistant rather than merely a transcription utility. Its capabilities included:

  • Meeting transcription and notes
  • Scheduling assistance
  • Action-item tracking
  • Follow-up reminders
  • Task management
  • Delivery through web, Chrome, and Slack

The company’s broader pitch was that enterprise software should perform work, not simply sit beside an employee as a “copilot.” That distinction mattered to customers using Xembly for recurring operational workflows: recording what happened in a meeting, identifying responsibilities, reminding people about commitments, and distributing information through tools they already used.

In practice, replacing Xembly therefore requires more than finding another meeting-transcription app. A company may need to replace several connected functions at once.

The company behind Xembly

Xembly was founded in Seattle in 2020 and spun out of Madrona Venture Labs. Reported co-founders included Pete Christothoulou, who served as CEO; Jason Flaks, CTO; and Peter Francis, chief growth officer. Christothoulou had previously been CEO of Marchex.

GeekWire reported that Xembly had about 45 employees as of August 2023. Reported customers included Salesforce, Qualtrics, and Twilio, among others. That does not necessarily mean each named company remained a customer when the service ended.

Reported funding totaled approximately $20 million, including a $15 million round announced in October 2022. Investors named in the coverage included Norwest Venture Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Ascend, Seven Peaks Ventures, Flex Capital, and angel investors. CB Insights’ company profile provides secondary corroboration for the founding year and reported funding.

What happened to the “new chapter”?

The phrase “new chapter” was part of the shutdown messaging, but it was not a product announcement. Xembly said the team was excited to work on a new chapter and would reach out when it had more to share. A separate message to administrators at corporate customers reportedly used similar language without explaining what would happen next.

Based on the available reporting:

What is verified What is not verified
Xembly’s customer-facing service ended June 1, 2024. A named successor product
The company said it would wind up the business in the following months. A rebrand or successor company
The team referred to an unspecified “new chapter.” An acquisition, pivot, or continuation of the same product
A later third-party review described the former product as unavailable. Whether the same team, investors, or intellectual property continued elsewhere

A later WorkGPT review also describes Xembly as unavailable, but it is not a first-party announcement from the company. There is no basis for treating the phrase “new chapter” as proof that Xembly became another identifiable business.

What former Xembly customers should do

The original export deadline has passed, so former customers should first determine what material was preserved outside Xembly. Search:

  1. Local downloads and shared drives
  2. Email accounts for forwarded summaries
  3. Google Drive and Google Docs
  4. Slack messages and saved files
  5. Calendar records connected to recurring meetings
  6. Internal knowledge bases or CRM records where summaries may have been copied

Separate meeting videos, transcripts, summaries, and task records rather than treating them as interchangeable. A video may be needed to resolve a disputed statement; a summary may be useful for quick reference; and an action-item list may be the only record of an operational commitment.

Organizations should also audit the workflows that depended on Xembly. Look for automated reminders, scheduling steps, Slack notifications, CRM updates, and executive-assistant processes that may have failed silently after the shutdown.

Before moving preserved material to another AI provider, review whether it contains customer information, employee information, financial data, legal discussions, health information, trade secrets, or regulated data. A replacement vendor’s retention, deletion, access, and model-training terms should be checked before uploading historical meetings.

How to choose a replacement

Choose a replacement based on the workflow that needs to continue, not on the number of features listed on a product page.

1. Check meeting-platform coverage

Confirm support for the platforms your organization actually uses: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, phone calls, or in-person meetings. A tool that works well on one platform may be far less useful for a company with a mixed meeting environment.

2. Decide whether a meeting bot is acceptable

Some assistants join meetings as visible participants. Others capture audio through a desktop application or browser extension. Botless capture may be preferable for privacy-sensitive meetings or organizations that prohibit automated participants, but it can have different technical and administrative trade-offs.

3. Test action-item execution

Basic products summarize conversations. More advanced systems create tasks, draft follow-up emails, update CRM records, or trigger workflows. Verify which actions are actually automated and which require manual approval, separate integrations, or a higher-priced plan.

4. Require usable exports

Ask whether transcripts, recordings, summaries, and task data can be exported in practical formats. Also check whether exports are available to administrators, whether they include metadata, and whether the vendor’s retention policy changes after cancellation.

5. Review security and administration

Enterprise buyers should examine single sign-on, role-based access, audit logs, retention controls, encryption, regional storage, data-processing terms, and whether customer data is used to train models.

6. Test accuracy in realistic meetings

Vendor feature pages do not establish transcription accuracy. Test accents, overlapping speakers, domain-specific terminology, poor audio, multiple languages, and meetings with several participants. Also verify whether the system assigns action items correctly instead of merely producing fluent-sounding summaries.

Potential alternatives

The right alternative depends on whether the priority is platform integration, transcription, sales workflows, or a broader executive-assistant experience.

Zoom AI note-taking

Zoom’s My Notes feature is positioned for meetings across Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, and can generate follow-ups and to-dos. It may suit organizations already standardized on Zoom or teams that want an integrated assistant without adding a separate meeting-bot vendor.

The trade-off is that companies seeking deep CRM workflows, broad non-meeting capture, or a platform-neutral knowledge repository may need additional tools. Zoom’s page showed paid Workplace plans starting at $14.16 per user per month and a standalone option starting at $8.33 per user per month on August 18, 2026. Pricing and plan contents can change, so confirm them before purchase.

Otter.ai

Otter’s plans include a free Basic option and paid tiers with support for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. Depending on the plan, features include live transcription, speaker identification, AI workflows, and integrations such as Salesforce, HubSpot, and Zapier.

Otter may fit individuals and teams looking for a searchable meeting-transcription workspace. Buyers requiring guaranteed botless capture, strict data residency, or an executive-assistant workflow identical to Xembly should validate those requirements separately. The pricing page displayed Pro at $16.99 per user per month monthly or $8.33 per user per month under an annual-price display, with Business at $19.99 per user per month, as of August 18, 2026.

Avoma

Avoma supports several meeting platforms, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, and GoToMeeting. Its feature set is oriented toward conversation intelligence, scheduling, follow-up emails, and CRM synchronization. Enterprise controls listed by the company include SSO, retention policies, and HIPAA compliance on the Enterprise tier.

Avoma may be a stronger fit for sales, customer-success, and revenue teams that need structured CRM follow-up rather than general-purpose notes. Its pricing page listed Startup at $19 per recorder seat per month billed annually, Organization at $29, and Enterprise at $39, with free viewers and a 14-day trial. Confirm current pricing and seat definitions before committing.

Built-in collaboration-suite assistants

Organizations may also consider assistants already included in their collaboration environment, such as Zoom AI Companion, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 AI features, or Google Meet’s meeting-note and summary tools.

The main advantage is reduced vendor sprawl and potentially simpler administration. The main drawback is platform dependence. A built-in assistant may be convenient for a company using one collaboration suite but less flexible for teams that regularly move between multiple meeting platforms.

The broader enterprise-AI lesson

Xembly’s shutdown illustrates a risk that is easy to overlook when buying an AI workflow product: the application may depend heavily on underlying model platforms, even when customers experience it as a complete business tool.

That dependence can affect cost, availability, model behavior, latency, licensing, and the vendor’s ability to maintain promised features. Xembly’s statement does not reveal which of those factors mattered most, but it shows why buyers should ask about platform dependencies and contingency plans.

The customer-side lesson is equally practical. Meeting recordings and summaries are business records when they support decisions, commitments, customer relationships, or compliance processes. A vendor should therefore be evaluated not only for summary quality but also for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Data portability and export formats
  • Retention and deletion controls
  • Administrative access
  • Recording consent and notification features
  • Integration failure handling
  • Migration procedures if the vendor closes or changes direction

AI-generated action items also require review. A fluent summary can still omit an important qualification, assign a task to the wrong person, or turn a tentative idea into an apparent commitment. Human approval remains important for sensitive meetings and consequential workflows.

Bottom line

Xembly ended its customer-facing service on June 1, 2024, after saying that changes in underlying AI platforms made the business difficult to operate. It gave customers a limited opportunity to preserve their material, said it would wind up the business, and referred to an undefined “new chapter.” As of the available reporting, that phrase does not verify a successor product, rebrand, acquisition, or new company.

For former customers, the practical response is to recover whatever data was exported, identify the workflows that depended on Xembly, and select a replacement based on portability, governance, platform coverage, and actual task execution—not just transcription features.
