Blue Origin employees reported a targeted round of layoffs around September 5, 2023, with the public reports centered on human-resources and talent-acquisition roles. The exact number affected, the companywide percentage, severance terms, geographic scope, and official rationale were not publicly established in the initial coverage.
This was not documented as a companywide engineering or production cut. Blue Origin was still advertising technical roles at the time, suggesting selective staffing changes rather than a complete hiring freeze or proof that the company was abandoning its launch, engine, lunar, or space-station programs.

What happened at Blue Origin in September 2023?
Employees began reporting layoffs around Tuesday, September 5, 2023. GeekWire reported the story on September 6, based primarily on LinkedIn posts from affected workers and commentary from TechCrunch reporter Aria Alamalhodaei.

The available evidence supports describing the event as an apparent reduction in force, but it does not establish that every affected employee experienced the same process. Alamalhodaei said some employees appeared to have been offered the opportunity to seek another internal Blue Origin role.
Blue Origin was contacted for comment, but the initial reporting did not document a substantive company explanation.
How many people were laid off?
No authoritative total was established for the September 2023 cuts. The reports referred to “several” employees, but that wording should not be converted into a precise headcount or workforce percentage.
There was also no verified public accounting of:
- the total number of positions eliminated;
- the percentage of Blue Origin’s workforce affected;
- severance or benefits arrangements;
- which locations were involved; or
- whether engineering, manufacturing, launch, or operations employees were included.
Blue Origin’s headquarters is in Kent, Washington, but the company operated across multiple locations, including Alabama, California, Florida, Texas, and the Washington, D.C., area. The available reporting does not show that the September layoffs were limited to Kent or that other sites were unaffected.
What the public evidence does—and does not—show
| Reported or observed | Not publicly established |
|---|---|
| Employees said they had been laid off. | The exact number affected. |
| Human resources and talent acquisition appeared especially affected. | The official reason for the cuts. |
| Some workers may have been able to pursue internal roles. | Whether the cuts extended materially into engineering or production. |
| Technical job listings remained visible on Blue Origin’s careers site. | Whether every advertised role represented a still-open position. |
That distinction matters. Employee posts are firsthand evidence that particular people lost their jobs, but they are not a complete corporate headcount or formal announcement.

Why the layoffs were notable
The reports appeared after years of rapid workforce expansion. GeekWire cited estimates indicating that Blue Origin had grown from fewer than 1,000 employees as recently as 2018 to nearly 4,000 roughly two years later, approximately 6,000 by July 2022, and an estimated 11,000 by 2023. Those figures were reported or estimated rather than audited official headcounts, and different sources may count employees and contractors differently.
The significance of the September event was therefore not necessarily its absolute size. It was the apparent reversal of a long expansion cycle at a privately held space company that had been building capabilities across launch vehicles, rocket engines, lunar systems, and commercial space infrastructure.

Why might recruiting roles have been affected?
Blue Origin did not publicly establish the reason in the available coverage. Several explanations are possible:
- Recruiting demand may have fallen after a period of aggressive hiring.
- Human-resources or talent-acquisition work may have been consolidated.
- Some staff may have been redeployed into other internal roles.
- Program schedules may have shifted, changing the timing of hiring needs.
- The company may have redirected spending toward engineering, manufacturing, launch operations, and production.
These are interpretations, not confirmed causes. The evidence identifies where the visible cuts were concentrated, not why Blue Origin made the decision.
Blue Origin was still advertising technical jobs
At the time, Blue Origin’s careers site showed more than 440 openings, according to GeekWire. The number was a snapshot and could include duplicate listings or roles whose hiring status had changed.

The apparent emphasis on technical positions is consistent with a selective staffing strategy: a company can reduce recruiting or administrative headcount while continuing to hire engineers, technicians, manufacturing specialists, and other workers needed for development and production.

The program context
Blue Origin was managing several major programs at once:
- New Shepard: a suborbital vehicle used for crewed and research flights.
- BE-4: a methane-fueled rocket engine also used by United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket.
- New Glenn: an orbital-class launch vehicle under development.
- Blue Moon: the company’s lunar-lander program.
- Orbital Reef: a planned commercial space-station project.
This portfolio created pressure to move from rapid organizational growth toward repeatable engineering, manufacturing, testing, and operations. But the available evidence does not show that any one program directly caused the layoffs.

New Shepard remained grounded after a launch anomaly that had occurred about a year earlier. That delay formed part of the broader business context, but no company statement or other evidence in the initial report tied the HR and recruiting cuts directly to the grounding.

It would therefore be misleading to say that Blue Origin laid off these employees because New Shepard was delayed. The strongest defensible statement is that the layoffs occurred while the company was balancing program delays, long development timelines, and a large workforce.
What happened after September 2023?
The September reports should not be treated as Blue Origin’s last or largest reduction. A later TrueUp workforce-tracking page listed separate events, including:
- October 2023: an event involving approximately 40 people.
- February 2025: a reduction described by the tracker as affecting roughly 10% of the company.
Those later figures come from a secondary workforce-tracking source, not a Blue Origin filing or official company release. They should remain separate from the September 2023 HR and talent-acquisition reports.
What the event meant for employees and applicants
For employees in recruiting and corporate functions, the reports showed that rapid-growth hiring plans could be revised even while the company continued pursuing major technical programs. The possibility of internal transfers also means that not every affected worker necessarily faced an identical outcome.

For engineers, manufacturing workers, and applicants, the available evidence did not indicate a blanket retreat from technical hiring. It did show that an open job listing was not a guarantee of organizational stability, an immediate start date, or protection from later reprioritization.
For aerospace labor-market observers, the episode was best read as an early sign of organizational discipline after aggressive expansion—not as proof that Blue Origin was collapsing or abandoning its core programs.
Bottom line
The September 2023 Blue Origin story was a reported, targeted workforce reduction whose public evidence centered on HR and talent acquisition. Its exact scale and official rationale remained unclear. Continued technical job listings pointed to selective reprioritization rather than a companywide shutdown of hiring, while later reductions demonstrate why the event should be placed in a broader timeline rather than treated as an isolated final layoff.
