Do not buy a Temu listing when several warning signs appear together: the seller is difficult to verify, the price is implausibly low, the selected variant does not match the photos, reviews describe a different product, or the seller wants payment or communication outside Temu.
A low price alone does not prove a scam. Temu is a marketplace that connects shoppers with independent third-party sellers, so listings can range from legitimate generic products to misleading offers, counterfeit goods, bait-and-switch listings, non-delivery, and attempts to move transactions off-platform. Use the five checks below before paying, especially for branded, electronic, health, children’s, or safety-critical products.

Quick decision rule
Pause or walk away if the listing fails multiple independent checks. As a practical, non-official scoring aid, count one point for each warning sign:
- The seller’s identity or contact information is unclear.
- The price is dramatically below credible market prices.
- The photos, specifications, title, and selected variant do not match.
- The model number, warranty, or technical details are missing.
- Reviews are generic, duplicated, unusually concentrated, or inconsistent.
- Recent buyers report counterfeit, empty, wrong, or materially different items.
- Return terms are unclear or unusually restrictive.
- The seller requests external communication or payment.
- The product is safety-critical or regulated and cannot be verified.
Zero or one point: proceed only after checking the seller, exact variant, total cost, and return terms. Two or three points: choose a more verifiable listing. Four or more points: do not buy and consider reporting it. Any request for external payment or an unverifiable safety claim is a stop sign regardless of the score.

This is a consumer decision aid, not an official Temu or government rating system.
1. Verify who is actually selling the product
Start with the seller page, not Temu’s overall reputation. The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking an individual marketplace seller’s ratings, recent comments, contact information, shipping fees, terms, and return policy.
Check these details
- Seller name and storefront.
- Meaningful recent feedback and transaction history, where displayed.
- Usable business or contact information.
- Whether the seller’s catalog makes sense. A storefront selling unrelated products copied across many categories deserves more scrutiny.
- Whether the product is clearly connected to the seller shown on the listing.
- Whether Temu provides a platform-native way to report the listing.
A new or nearly empty storefront selling expensive branded products is a warning sign. So is a seller with a high overall score but little recent feedback, inconsistent information, or a request to cancel the Temu order and pay directly.
Keep communication and payment inside Temu. A request to use WhatsApp, Telegram, email, a personal website, an outside wallet, or another payment page can remove marketplace protections. The FTC specifically warns buyers not to pay outside a marketplace’s payment system.
Temu’s seller disclosures and reporting controls can vary by country, device, app version, and listing type. Do not assume that a missing or difficult-to-find seller-reporting option proves fraud, but treat it as a reason to slow down and verify more carefully. In a September 8, 2025 enforcement action, the FTC alleged that required seller information and reporting mechanisms were difficult to find or inconsistently available in parts of Temu’s marketplace. The resolution announced by the FTC and DOJ included a $2 million civil penalty and compliance measures. That action does not establish that every Temu listing is fraudulent or that every current interface has the same problem.
2. Test the offer against the real product
Compare the complete offer—not just the large discount displayed on the listing—with the manufacturer’s information and established retailers. The FTC advises comparing the total cost and reading the entire description, including terms such as “used,” “refurbished,” “vintage,” “as is,” and “close-out.”
Look for bait-and-switch variants
Marketplace listings often contain multiple sizes, quantities, colors, or accessories. The headline image may show a complete product while the cheapest selected option is only a component.

- [Compatible with iPhone 13] This Phone Case Only Compatible with iPhone 13 case 6.1 inch.
- [Skin-Friendly] The back of the case is crafted with a skin-touch matte finish, which feels smooth and non-slip in your hand. Unlike glossy surfaces that attract fingerprints and smudges, this matte texture stays clean with minimal wiping, while its soft tactile sensation enhances holding comfort for long periods.
- [Magnetic Craft] The built-in magnetic ring can strengthen the magnetic absorption, empowering the case to be compatible with wireless charger, magnetic car mount, magnetic battery bank, magnetic wallet, and most MagSafe accessories. The perfectly aligned magnets enable wireless charging faster and safer than ever. Wireless charge on with the case on.
- [Shock Protection] Withstanding the rigorous 10-foot military-grade drop test, it builds a solid defense for your device, and can easily resist the damage caused by violent impacts and accidental drops.
- [Precise Cutout] Precise cutout fits the volume buttons, side button, and curves of your device without adding bulk. It is a more lightweight case with a firm and comfortable grip.
Example: The main image shows a complete branded tool kit, but the selected $3 option is a replacement case. That is a likely bait-and-switch risk if the distinction is difficult to see or the title implies the entire kit.
Before paying, confirm:
- The exact selected variant and quantity.
- Dimensions, materials, capacity, voltage, compatibility, and included accessories.
- The model number and manufacturer.
- Whether the photos show the same item as the written description.
- Whether the title uses a brand name while the description retreats to phrases such as “style,” “compatible with,” “inspired,” or “for.”
- Whether required add-ons, minimum quantities, shipping charges, taxes, or promotional conditions change the real price.
A famous brand offered at a fraction of its normal price, with no model number, warranty, or evidence of authorized distribution, carries substantial counterfeit risk. The FTC warns that expensive brand-name products at unusually low prices may be counterfeit or stolen.
Do not confuse a legitimate generic product with a counterfeit. An unbranded item may be genuine as a generic product if it is accurately described. A product using a brand’s name, logo, packaging, or model identity without credible evidence of authenticity presents a different risk. Conversely, a product can be genuine yet unsafe, incorrectly labeled, or noncompliant with required standards.
Use extra caution with high-risk products
- Chargers, batteries, heaters, power tools, and electrical adapters.
- Helmets, car seats, protective equipment, and other safety gear.
- Children’s products and toys.
- Cosmetics, supplements, medicines, and products making health claims.
- Memory cards, storage devices, computer components, and branded electronics.
- Products whose safety depends on certification, voltage, material composition, or precise sizing.
The test is not simply “Is it sold on Temu?” The test is whether the listing gives you enough reliable information to verify the product’s identity, specifications, safety, and authenticity.
3. Audit reviews for evidence, not just stars
A high star rating is not proof that the product is authentic or accurately described. The FTC says fake reviews can be positive or negative and recommends considering recency, reviewer history, review sources, incentives, and the substance of the comments. A large review count can reflect legitimate sales, multiple variants, imported reviews, or manipulation.
A useful review-reading sequence
- Inspect the newest reviews, not only the overall rating.
- Read one- and two-star reviews.
- Search reviews for “fake,” “wrong,” “counterfeit,” “empty,” “missing,” “different,” “refund,” and “size.”
- Compare buyer photos or videos with the listing images.
- Confirm that reviews concern the exact size, color, model, and variant you intend to buy.
- Look for repeated complaints that the seller has not resolved.
Warning patterns include hundreds of enthusiastic reviews posted in a short burst, repeated or near-identical wording, praise that discusses shipping but not the item, reviews referring to another product, and photo reviews showing a different material or design. A reviewer account created mainly to post one review can also be a warning sign, although suspicious-looking reviews are not automatically provably fake.
Example: Most reviews are short and generic, while recent photo reviews show a different material and design. That mismatch is more important than the headline rating and should push you toward another listing.

Reviews can also reveal an ordinary quality or fulfillment problem rather than a scam. A product may arrive exactly as described but be cheaply made. That is different from a counterfeit product, a materially misrepresented listing, or an item that never arrives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Read shipping, return, and payment terms before paying
Check the estimated delivery date, shipping origin, tracking method, return window, exclusions, and who pays return shipping. Also check whether the final price or terms change at checkout and whether payment remains inside Temu.
Temu describes a Purchase Protection Program covering items that do not arrive, arrive damaged, or are not as described. Its return and refund policy is not necessarily identical for every product: terms can depend on the item, category, seller, and market. Do not assume that every order has a universal return period or guaranteed refund.
The FTC says online sellers generally must ship within the promised time or, when no time is stated, generally within 30 days after receiving the necessary order and payment information. If the seller cannot meet the promise, consumers generally must be given the choice to cancel for a refund or accept a revised date.
Transaction warning signs
- The seller asks you to confirm delivery before the package arrives.
- The seller offers a partial refund in exchange for dropping a dispute about a materially misleading product.
- You are asked to pay an additional “release,” “insurance,” customs, or verification fee through an outside channel.
- Tracking exists but does not match your address, carrier, package, or delivery date.
- A return exclusion is difficult to find before purchase.
Example: A seller asks you to pay a “release fee” through an external wallet. Stop communicating, do not pay, preserve the message, and report it. A logo or message that appears to be from Temu is not proof that it is genuine.

For U.S. shoppers, a credit card generally provides stronger dispute protections for online shopping problems than irreversible methods such as gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. This is not a guarantee of recovery, and debit-card protections may differ. The safest practice is to keep the transaction inside Temu and use a payment method with a dispute process.

Before buying a branded, technical, expensive, or safety-sensitive product, search the exact model number on the manufacturer’s official website. Compare dimensions, materials, packaging, included accessories, warranty terms, and identifying marks. Search the seller or company name with words such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam,” as the FTC recommends, and check multiple sources.

Reverse-image or visual-search tools may reveal copied manufacturer photos or the same image used for different products. That clue is not proof of fraud: legitimate resellers may use manufacturer assets. Combine it with seller authorization, model verification, inconsistent specifications, and review evidence.
For regulated or safety-sensitive products, check the relevant manufacturer or government source for current recalls or safety notices. Do not rely on a listing’s generic certification logo or an HTTPS address as proof of legitimacy. The FTC notes that HTTPS indicates encryption but does not establish that a website or seller is legitimate.

- Save screenshots or a screen recording of the title, price, seller, photos, specifications, selected variant, reviews, delivery promise, and return terms.
- Save the storefront URL, seller name, order number, and any messages. Listings can disappear or sellers can change names.
- Do not click unfamiliar external links or send identity documents, card details, passwords, or verification codes.
- Use Temu’s current in-app or website customer-service and reporting process. Temu provides guidance for reporting suspicious activity and financial fraud.
- If you purchased the item, open the order’s return, refund, or Purchase Protection process promptly.
- If the issue is not resolved, contact your card issuer and ask about a dispute. For certain U.S. credit-card billing errors, FTC guidance describes a 60-day written-notice deadline; contact the issuer promptly and follow its instructions.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You may also contact your state attorney general where appropriate.
Not every bad order is a scam
| What happened | Possible classification | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Item arrives late | Fulfillment problem | Check the promised date and request a remedy through Temu. |
| Item is cheaply made but accurately described | Poor quality | Decide whether returning it is worthwhile under the applicable terms. |
| Item is materially different from the listing | Deceptive listing | Photograph the item and packaging, request a refund, and report the listing. |
| Branded item appears fake | Counterfeit risk | Preserve packaging and identifying details; do not resell it. |
| Seller requests external payment | Scam warning | Do not pay; stop the off-platform transaction and report it. |
| Package never arrives | Non-delivery | Use Temu’s protection process and consider card-dispute options. |
Tracking alone does not prove fulfillment. A tracking number can correspond to the wrong address, an empty package, or the wrong item. Keep delivery photos, shipping labels, package weight when available, and an unboxing video or photographs showing the package before opening.
What to do after ordering
- Save the order confirmation, listing screenshots, receipt, promised delivery date, and seller communications.
- When the package arrives, photograph the label and condition before opening.
- Record the item, packaging, serial or model number, missing parts, and any mismatch with the listing.
- Do not discard packaging until the dispute or return is complete.
- Use Temu’s official order-support, return, or refund process before the relevant deadline.
- Describe the problem precisely: non-delivery, wrong variant, counterfeit concern, missing component, damage, or “not as described.”
- If Temu denies or delays the remedy, keep the denial and all evidence, then contact the payment provider about its dispute process.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC and, for safety concerns, the appropriate regulator or manufacturer.
Unexpected Temu packages
If a package arrives that you did not order, do not assume it is a free gift. It may be part of a “brushing” scheme in which goods are sent to create fake sales or reviews using someone’s personal information. The FTC recommends changing shopping-account passwords, monitoring credit, not contacting the sender, keeping the merchandise, and reporting the matter.
Also be alert to suspicious emails or messages using Temu’s branding. Do not click links in them; use the official Temu app or website instead.
Final buy, pause, or walk-away checklist
- Buy only after checking: the seller, exact variant, total delivered cost, recent reviews, specifications, delivery promise, and return terms.
- Pause when: one or two details conflict, the model information is incomplete, or the reviews do not clearly match the selected item.
- Walk away when: the seller is unverifiable, the product is implausibly cheap, multiple listing details conflict, recent buyers report material deception, or anyone asks for payment outside Temu.
- Be especially conservative: with electrical products, children’s goods, protective equipment, cosmetics, supplements, medicines, and branded electronics.
The lowest price is not always the lowest-cost choice. Paying more through a traceable seller may buy clearer specifications, authentic distribution, warranty support, and a simpler remedy if something goes wrong.
