Short answer: Ecosia is not a conventional charity. It is a German company, Ecosia GmbH, that operates as a not-for-profit social business. Founded by Christian Kroll, it earns most of its money from search advertising, pays its operating costs, and says it directs 100% of its profits to climate action. Its steward-ownership structure is designed to prevent the company being sold for profit or its value being extracted by private owners.
Is Ecosia actually a nonprofit?
In everyday language, Ecosia is often called a nonprofit search engine. Legally, that description needs qualification: Ecosia is a German GmbH, not a conventional charity, foundation, or donation-funded nonprofit.

A GmbH is a commercial company structure. Ecosia can sell advertising, sign technology agreements, employ staff, and pay for infrastructure like any other business. The difference is what its owners are allowed to do with the company’s value. Ecosia describes itself as a not-for-profit social business whose purpose is climate action rather than shareholder enrichment.
That distinction matters financially:
- Revenue is the money Ecosia receives, primarily from advertising.
- Expenses include employees, technology, search infrastructure, administration, and partner costs.
- Profit is what remains after those costs.
- Ecosia says it directs 100% of profits to climate action—not 100% of gross advertising revenue.

Who founded Ecosia?
Christian Kroll founded Ecosia in December 2009. The original concept was to use search advertising income to finance tree planting and restoration projects. Kroll remains identified by Ecosia and the Purpose Foundation as the company’s founder and steward.
Who owns and controls Ecosia?
The simple answer—“Christian Kroll owns Ecosia”—is incomplete. Since 2018, Ecosia has used a steward-ownership structure supported by the Purpose Foundation. This separates operational control from the right to extract personal financial value.
| Party | Role |
|---|---|
| Christian Kroll and company stewards | Mission-connected people who hold control under the steward-ownership arrangement. |
| Purpose Foundation | Holds a veto or “golden share” intended to block a sale or structural change that would undermine the company’s purpose. |
| Outside investors | According to Ecosia’s stated structure, no ordinary outside owner has the right to extract the company’s profits personally. |
| Management and employees | Run the business day to day within its governance framework. |
Public descriptions of the structure use different shorthand. One Ecosia FAQ says the Purpose Foundation owns a majority of shares, while Purpose Foundation materials describe a voting arrangement involving Christian Kroll, former co-owner Tim Schumacher, and a 1% veto share held by the foundation. Those descriptions may refer to different share classes or summarize a more complicated German corporate arrangement. It is safer not to present a single ownership percentage as definitive without reviewing current corporate documents.
The consistent point is that the structure is designed to prevent a conventional sale, dividend extraction, or transfer of control to the highest bidder. Ecosia’s 2018 explanation is available in its “trees, not profits” announcement; the Purpose Foundation explains the purpose veto share separately.
What is steward ownership?
Steward ownership is a governance model intended to keep a company controlled by people connected to its mission and operations rather than by owners seeking the highest financial return.
In practical terms, Ecosia’s model is intended to provide three protections:
- Self-determination: the company cannot simply be sold as an asset to an outside buyer.
- Purpose orientation: profits are used for the mission, reinvestment, stakeholders, or environmental work rather than extracted by owners.
- Mission protection: an independent purpose-oriented entity can veto changes that would dismantle the structure.
This differs from ordinary shareholder ownership, where investors generally receive economic rights and may benefit from dividends or a sale. It also differs from foundation ownership, in which a foundation may own and govern a company directly. Under steward ownership, control remains with mission-connected stewards while personal economic extraction and sale are restricted.

How does Ecosia make money?
Ecosia’s main income source is search advertising. The simplified flow is:
User searches → sponsored results appear → an advertiser pays through an advertising partner → Ecosia receives advertising revenue → operating costs are paid → remaining profit funds climate action.
Advertisers bid on keywords through Ecosia’s advertising partners. The direct commercial event that generally produces meaningful revenue is an interaction with an advertisement, especially an ad click—not merely the act of typing a search query.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ecosia says it does not primarily rely on:
- Search subscriptions;
- Donations from ordinary users;
- A fee charged for every search; or
- Selling users’ personal profiles to advertisers.
Advertising revenue varies according to geography, search category, advertiser demand, ad availability, browser settings, consent, and whether users interact with ads. Ad blockers can also interfere with the advertising model.
That is why “every search plants a tree” is too literal. A search may contribute to the audience and create an opportunity for advertising, but it does not necessarily generate an individual payment.
Where do Ecosia’s search results and ads come from?
Ecosia is mission-different from Google, but it is not technologically independent of the dominant search ecosystem.
According to Ecosia, Microsoft Bing supplies substantial parts of its search results and advertising. Google may supply some results or ads depending on the user’s region, browser, configuration, and consent. These arrangements can change over time.

Ecosia controls its brand, interface, privacy approach, and mission. But external companies can provide important parts of:
- Search indexes and result infrastructure;
- Advertising auctions;
- Ad delivery and billing;
- Some data processing; and
- Search features or results in particular markets.
Its search-provider explanation and advertising information describe these relationships. The trade-off is straightforward: using Ecosia can redirect the profits of search usage toward climate projects, but it does not necessarily replace the underlying infrastructure operated by Microsoft or Google.
Where do Ecosia’s profits go?
Ecosia says it uses 100% of its profits for climate action. Tree planting and forest restoration remain its best-known activities, but its stated work has broadened to include:
- Local ecological and community projects;
- Renewable-energy investments;
- Regenerative agriculture;
- Biodiversity protection; and
- Other ecosystem-restoration and climate initiatives.
This does not mean every dollar of revenue goes directly to planting trees. Ecosia must first pay the costs of operating a search engine and browser, including people, technology, infrastructure, and commercial partners. The company’s claim concerns profit after costs.
Does using Ecosia really plant a tree?
Not in the sense that every individual query creates a guaranteed, separately identifiable tree.
Ecosia can estimate environmental impact from aggregate advertising revenue, search volume, and project spending. It may express that result as an average impact per search, but that is an attribution metric—not a promise that each query produces a particular tree.
Tree planting also has outcomes that cannot be judged from a headline count alone. Species selection, land rights, local participation, maintenance, survival rates, and long-term restoration quality all matter. A planted tree can fail to survive, and tree planting is not automatically the same as permanent carbon removal.

Ecosia says its trees are not used as carbon offsets. Therefore, using Ecosia should not be described as directly offsetting the emissions from your search, travel, or household consumption.

What privacy does Ecosia provide?
Ecosia presents itself as a privacy-focused alternative and says it does not sell users’ personal data to advertisers. It also says it anonymizes IP addresses internally after a maximum of seven days.
That does not mean that no data is processed. Search and advertising partners may process information under their own policies. Microsoft and Google can have their own retention, security, and data-handling rules, and Google-powered results may require consent depending on the region and configuration.
The more accurate description is:
Ecosia says it does not build its advertising business by selling users’ personal data, but searches can still involve external search and advertising providers whose practices matter.

Ecosia says it publishes monthly financial reports, annual regeneration reports, and updates about its planting partners and climate work. It also says its emissions are audited by ClimatePartner.

Those reports are useful, but transparency claims should be read carefully. A reader evaluating the model should ask:
- Does a report show gross revenue, expenses, or net profit?
- Are search infrastructure, partner payments, employee costs, and taxes separated clearly?
- How much money goes to tree planting versus renewable energy or other climate work?
- Are tree figures estimates, plantings reported by partners, or survival-adjusted totals?
- Which figures are independently audited?
- What exactly does the ClimatePartner audit cover, and what does it not cover?
Ecosia’s transparency page is the best starting point because financial and environmental figures change over time. A claim such as “100% of profits” should not be confused with an audited claim that every environmental outcome has been independently verified.

Is Ecosia independent?
The answer depends on what “independent” means.
- Mission and ownership: Ecosia is more independent from shareholder-profit pressure than a conventional investor-owned search company, because its steward structure is designed to prevent sale and personal profit extraction.
- Technology and commercial infrastructure: Ecosia is not fully independent. It relies substantially on external search and advertising partners, including Microsoft and, in some circumstances, Google.
This creates the central tension in Ecosia’s model. The company changes who benefits from search advertising profits, but it does not necessarily replace the dominant technology and advertising systems underneath the service.
What does Ecosia mean for consumers and businesses?
For an individual user, Ecosia is a free way to support a stated environmental mission through ordinary search activity. You do not need a subscription or donation. However, search quality, local coverage, features, and privacy details can vary by country, provider, browser, consent status, and product version.
For a business, university, nonprofit, or public body, Ecosia also promotes organizational adoption through Ecosia for Companies. It may appeal to organizations seeking a low-friction sustainability initiative and impact reporting. It may be a poor fit for organizations requiring a fully independent search index, strict enterprise data-residency controls, guaranteed support levels, or advanced centralized search administration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Ecosia is best understood as a privately operated German social enterprise with legally protected steward ownership—not as a conventional charity.
Christian Kroll founded it, but he does not simply own it in the ordinary “founder can sell the company and keep the proceeds” sense. Its post-2018 governance structure is intended to keep control with mission-connected stewards, give the Purpose Foundation veto power over a sale or mission-undermining change, and prevent owners from extracting profits personally.
The company makes money primarily from search advertising. Revenue pays for operations first; Ecosia says the resulting profits go to climate action. Searches themselves do not guarantee a tree, and the service remains dependent on Microsoft, Google, and other technology partners for important parts of search and advertising.
That combination—mission-protected ownership, advertising-funded operations, environmental spending, and infrastructure dependence—is the accurate answer to both who controls Ecosia and how it makes money.
