Yes. On August 19, 2024, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump told Reuters he would consider Elon Musk for an advisory role or Cabinet position if Musk were willing to serve. Trump said, “I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would.” That was a conditional statement of willingness—not an appointment. Musk later served as a senior adviser associated with DOGE, but the reporting reviewed does not say he became a Cabinet member.
What Trump said in 2024
Reuters reported on August 20, 2024, that Trump had made the remark in an interview the previous day. Asked whether he would consider Musk for an advisory role or Cabinet position, Trump replied: “I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would.” Reuters’ account of the interview makes the condition clear: Trump said he would consider Musk if Musk wanted the role. He did not announce an appointment or say he had offered Musk a specific job.

Did Musk join the Cabinet?
No Cabinet appointment is established by the available reporting. After Trump returned to office, Musk served as a senior adviser associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The White House described Musk as a “departing DOGE adviser” at a May 30, 2025 event marking his departure. The White House event page identifies him as an adviser, not a Cabinet member.

On September 30, 2026, Axios reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had announced Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as advisers to a Pentagon study of the future of warfare called Project Meridian. Axios characterized this as Musk’s first official advisory role with the Trump administration since his public feud with Trump and his departure from DOGE. Axios’ report describes an advisory role for the study; it does not say Musk became a Cabinet member or set out the role’s formal terms, duration, or authority.

Reuters’ 2024 report also covered Trump’s position on ending the federal electric-vehicle purchase tax credit, then described as $7,500. The report does not establish that Musk’s prospective role was connected to Tesla, electric-vehicle policy, or the credit. The tax-credit discussion is surrounding campaign context, not evidence about the purpose of a possible appointment.
