There is no single “crypto fee.” The amount you pay can combine a trading commission, a spread embedded in the quoted price, a charge for funding with fiat, and a cryptocurrency withdrawal or blockchain network fee. The only reliable total is the transaction preview for your chosen asset, order, service, payment route, account tier, and network.
Those layers are set by different parties and change on different schedules. An exchange can change its volume tiers, a payment provider can charge for a wire, and a busy blockchain can make network execution more expensive. Treat every advertised percentage as one component—not the price of the whole transaction.

The four cost layers in a crypto transaction
Buying on an exchange and later sending the coins elsewhere can create several separate charges. A like-for-like comparison should identify each one rather than treating “the fee” as a universal number.
- Trading fee: the exchange’s commission when your order executes. It is commonly quoted as a maker or taker rate.
- Spread: the gap between a reference market price and the buy or sell price offered to you. An instant-buy quote can include this cost even when a separate commission looks low.
- Funding fee: a charge for depositing or withdrawing fiat, or a payment-provider charge attached to a card or other cash route.
- Crypto withdrawal and network fee: the amount charged when the exchange sends an on-chain transaction. The exchange may estimate its blockchain cost and add its own policy or margin, so this is not necessarily the exact amount the network costs the exchange.
Location, product, trading pair, payment method, order size, account activity and volume tier can all change the result. A schedule for an order-book product does not automatically apply to an instant-purchase interface or to a different pair.

Trading fees: maker, taker and volume tiers
How maker and taker orders work
A maker order rests on the order book and adds liquidity. A taker order matches an order already available and removes liquidity. Market orders generally execute immediately and are taker. A limit order is not automatically maker: if its price crosses the available book, it executes immediately and is charged as taker. A partially filled order can contain both maker and taker portions.

Why your percentage depends on volume
Many exchanges use rolling-volume tiers. Coinbase Exchange says its tier is based on trailing 30-day US-dollar volume and the tier in force when the order is placed. Kraken says its executed trading fee depends on 30-day trading volume, the trading pair and maker/taker status. A rate shown in a general article is therefore not a universal crypto rate.

For a simple calculation, a 0.60% rate on a $1,000 trade is $6 before any spread, funding charge or withdrawal cost. That arithmetic does not mean every $1,000 trade receives that rate: your tier, pair, product and execution determine the actual commission.

Spreads and instant-buy quotes
A spread is the difference between the reference market rate and the price a service gives you. Instant-buy and instant-sell products can include a spread that changes with volatility, asset, order size and order type, VIP status and account activity. The quoted spread can exist alongside a named trading fee and a payment-method fee.

Compare the complete quote instead of looking only for a low commission. Before confirming, record the cash debited, the quantity of crypto delivered, the displayed fee, the payment charge and the quoted exchange rate. A fee waiver does not prove that the all-in price is low if the quote contains a wider spread.
Fiat deposits, withdrawals and payment routes
Moving dollars or euros into or out of an exchange is separate from executing a crypto trade. The displayed Coinbase Exchange fiat table, accessed October 13, 2026, lists these examples:

Other routes, including SWIFT, can have different terms. Banks and payment providers may also add charges that do not appear as an exchange trading fee. Include the selected cash route whenever you compare platforms or calculate the cost of a round trip.

Why crypto withdrawals cost money
Blockchain execution is a separate expense
When an exchange sends your coins to an external address, a blockchain transaction must be accepted by network validators or miners. Coinbase’s Global Exchange help explanation describes a network fee as an amount of the blockchain’s native cryptocurrency paid to incentivize transaction inclusion. It says the exchange’s charge is based on an estimate of the network cost it anticipates paying and that the amount charged is disclosed when you transact.

An exchange withdrawal charge can therefore differ from the eventual amount the exchange pays. Check the withdrawal screen for the asset, selected network, fee and exact amount the destination will receive. A policy for one service cannot be generalized to every product: Coinbase states, for example, that USDC withdrawals are free across supported networks under that service’s stated policy.
Ethereum gas in plain language
Ethereum calls the unit of computational work gas. Its technical documentation defines the fee as gas used multiplied by the price per unit. The price has a base fee and usually a priority fee (tip); demand affects the priority component, so two otherwise similar transactions can cost different amounts.
Ethereum fees are paid in ETH. You pay for gas whether a transaction ultimately succeeds or fails. Unused gas is returned, but a transaction that runs out of gas during execution still consumes the gas used. That differs from a transaction rejected before inclusion because the gas limit is inadequate: it never executes, while an included transaction can consume gas and fail.

How to calculate your all-in cost before confirming
Use the same transaction specification for every service you compare. A different interface, payment method or network is a different transaction.
- Define the transaction: write down the asset, buy or sell amount, trading pair, destination address and network.
- Identify the product: distinguish an order-book trade from instant buy/sell, conversion, margin or another service with its own schedule.
- Check your tier: note the exchange’s current rolling-volume tier and whether the order is expected to be maker, taker or a mixture.
- Read the quote: compare the reference price, execution price and quantity received so a spread is not hidden by a small named commission.
- Add cash costs: include the selected card, bank, ACH, wire or SEPA deposit or withdrawal charge.
- Inspect the crypto withdrawal panel: verify the network, exchange withdrawal fee and the net amount the destination will receive. Do not assume that similarly named networks are interchangeable.
- Compare the final preview: use the amount paid and amount received immediately before confirmation. Fees are volatile and the preview is the relevant quote for that transaction.
A useful worksheet is:
Total cash outlay = trade amount + trading fee + payment/funding charge + any spread embedded in the quote.
Net crypto received = quoted crypto amount − withdrawal charge (if you withdraw).
Keep the two lines separate. A withdrawal fee may be deducted in crypto, while a trading commission may be taken in fiat or crypto depending on the service.

Comparing percentages from different products
An order-book maker rate, an instant-buy commission and a card-processing charge describe different services. Compare the same asset, order value, interface and payment route, then use the final preview.

Assuming every limit order is maker
A limit price that crosses the available book executes immediately as taker. If the order fills in several ways, inspect each fill rather than applying one label to the entire order.
Ignoring the spread
The spread is not always presented as a separate line. Compare the offered price with a contemporaneous reference price and focus on the quantity delivered for the cash paid.
Choosing a network by name alone
Networks can have similar names but are not automatically compatible with the receiving wallet. Select a network supported by both sides, verify the address format and read the net-amount line before sending.
Treating a published number as permanent
Exchange schedules, volume tiers, withdrawal charges and blockchain demand change. The Coinbase Help page states, “All fees we charge will be disclosed at the time of your transaction.” Use that transaction-time disclosure rather than an old screenshot or a generic “typical fee.”
What a fair fee comparison should contain
- Asset and pair, including whether the quote is fiat or stablecoin.
- Order value and whether the order is market, resting limit or an instant quote.
- Maker/taker status and the applicable rolling-volume tier.
- Displayed execution price, spread and quantity received.
- Deposit and withdrawal route, currency and provider charges.
- Crypto withdrawal network, exchange fee and final amount delivered.
- Location, product edition and the date and time of the quote.
No independent market-wide average is established here, so calling one platform or percentage “the typical crypto fee” would be misleading. Published Coinbase and Kraken figures are dated schedule examples, while the Ethereum calculation is an illustration rather than a current network price.
The Bottom Line
To know what crypto costs, total the commission, spread, funding charge and withdrawal/network fee for the exact transaction. Maker or taker status, volume tier, product, payment route and blockchain demand can each change the result; the transaction preview at confirmation is the authoritative quote.
