Copper vs. Fiber Optics for Data Center Connections: How to Choose

Neither copper nor fiber is the right choice for every data-center connection. For a compatible, short in-rack link, passive direct-attach copper (DAC) can be a practical option; fiber is suited to longer reaches and may reduce cable diameter. The right choice depends on the exact link’s data rate, reach, endpoint ports, total system cost, power needs, cable routing and maintenance.

What matters more than the material

Copper and fiber are families of physical media, not single performance tiers. Ethernet PHY standards support different speeds and reaches over multiple media, including twisted pair and fiber. For example, IEEE describes 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s optical interfaces over single-mode fiber for reaches up to 10 km. That is a capability of the cited optical PHYs, not a general comparison with every copper link. See the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet working group and the IEEE 802.3cu-2021 amendment.

Start with the required rate and distance, then confirm that the chosen PHY, cable or optics, and both endpoint ports are compatible. A medium that works at one rate or with one port type may not work for another.

When passive copper DAC makes sense

A passive DAC is a copper twinax cable assembly that connects compatible ports directly. It avoids separate optical conversion in the cable assembly, and NVIDIA describes DAC as a low-cost option mainly for short, in-rack links. That makes it worth considering when the endpoints are nearby and support the same cable, protocol and data rate.

NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD cabling guide says, “Due to their short reach, copper cables are mainly used within a rack.” The statement refers to the InfiniBand cabling context in that guide—not every copper technology. In its HDR InfiniBand example, the guide specifies a maximum passive-copper length of 2 m and says the passive cable requires no port power. Those are HDR-specific figures, not universal limits for DAC or copper links. See NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD cabling guide.

Before choosing a DAC, verify its port form factor, protocol, data rate, length and device-vendor compatibility against both endpoints. A cable that fits physically is not necessarily supported for the intended link.

When fiber is a better fit

Fiber supports longer reaches than the copper assemblies discussed in NVIDIA’s guide, and the guide’s comparison shows a smaller cable diameter. Those characteristics can help when endpoints are farther apart or when cable routing density matters. Actual reach depends on the optical PHY, fiber type, transceiver and data rate.

Optical links need compatible optical interfaces. Depending on the design, that means transceivers at the endpoints or an active optical cable assembly; these add electronics and require power. In two HDR transceiver examples, NVIDIA lists port power of up to 5 W. Treat that as model-specific information and check the current transceiver specification before using it to estimate a deployment’s power needs.

  • Easy Installation: flexible fiber patch cord with adjustable LC-LC connector clips and removable dust caps to protect fiber during installation, and embossed A/B position labels on the duplex clip and jacket tag rings labeled 1 & 2 provide quick identification of Tx and Rx when installing and troubleshooting

Fiber also needs careful handling. Follow the cable’s specified bend radius, provide strain relief, and keep connectors clean and inspectable; tight bends can degrade the signal. Fluke Networks explains the role of fiber-optic cable bend radius and the importance of cleaning and inspecting fiber terminations.

Compare the whole connection, not just the cable

A useful comparison includes the components, power and operational work needed to make the complete link run. Corning reports an average enterprise data-center link length of 49 meters and says more than 90 percent of links are shorter than 100 meters in its enterprise data-center discussion. Corning does not identify a publication year on that page, and the figures should not be assumed to describe every data center. See Corning’s data-center discussion.

  • Reach and rate: Confirm the supported distance at the required data rate for the exact PHY and medium.
  • Endpoint compatibility: Check the ports, protocol, form factor and supported cable or optical modules at both ends.
  • Total system cost: Include the cable, transceivers or active cable if required, and any related installation components. No neutral, current, like-for-like cost comparison establishes a universal winner.
  • Power: Account for port or module power across the planned links. Available figures depend on the specific equipment and architecture; vendor calculations should not be treated as universal savings.
  • Density and routing: Consider cable diameter, rack congestion, connector and patch-panel needs, bend radius and the route between endpoints.
  • Service and maintenance: Plan for installation, inspection, cleaning and replacement procedures appropriate to the cable and connector type.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify the link: Record the required protocol, data rate, endpoint devices and port types.
  2. Set the required reach: Measure the actual route, including patching, and check the selected PHY’s supported reach at the target rate.
  3. Compare compatible options: Confirm each proposed DAC, optical module or active optical cable is supported by both endpoints.
  4. Estimate the complete deployment: Compare cable and interface costs, power, routing density and any patching or maintenance needs together.
  5. Check installation requirements: For fiber, follow its bend-radius and connector-care requirements; for either medium, plan routing and service access.

What to verify before ordering

  • The exact PHY and standard version supported by the equipment.
  • Whether the link is Ethernet or InfiniBand; do not transfer a vendor example from one protocol to another.
  • Supported cable length, data rate, port form factor and vendor compatibility for both endpoints.
  • For optical links, the required fiber type, connector and transceiver, plus the module’s current power specification.
  • For fiber installations, the cable’s bend radius and the cleaning and inspection tools appropriate to its connector and equipment.

Standards and product specifications can change. Confirm the currently adopted PHY and the exact endpoint-and-cable combination for the deployment rather than relying on a figure from another product family.
