Choose copper wire by starting with the circuit’s load and application—not by picking a gauge from a generic chart. The right conductor depends on its ampacity under the actual installation conditions, equipment terminal limits, cable or insulation restrictions, and voltage drop over the run. A chart can help narrow the options, but it cannot determine a safe size for an unspecified circuit.
What determines the right copper wire size?
Wire gauge describes conductor size, but it does not determine how much current a particular installation can carry. Ampacity depends on the conductor material and size, the wire or cable type, installation method, ambient temperature, number of current-carrying conductors, and connected equipment ratings. Long runs also need a voltage-drop check.

The usable ampacity is constrained by the most restrictive applicable limit. That may be a code-table value after required adjustments, a terminal temperature rating, or a cable type’s limit. The insulation’s printed temperature rating alone does not establish the circuit’s permitted ampacity. Cerrowire’s Ampacity Calculator guidance explains these interacting limits and says its calculator follows 2020 NEC requirements; that does not establish compliance with a later locally adopted code or local amendments.

Use this sequence to select a conductor
- Define the circuit. Identify the load and its current, circuit voltage and configuration, whether the load is continuous, and the application. Do not start with an ampacity chart detached from those facts.
- Identify the wiring method and environment. Determine whether the installation uses individual conductors such as THHN/THWN-2, nonmetallic-sheathed cable, or flexible cord; also identify the conductor material and ambient conditions. Different wiring methods can have different table assumptions and limits.
- Find the applicable ampacity rule. Use the table and rules for the wiring method and code adopted where the work will be done. Base values apply only under their stated conditions.
- Apply required adjustments and corrections. Account for ambient temperature, the number of current-carrying conductors, and other installation-specific factors. Higher temperatures or more current-carrying conductors can reduce allowable ampacity.
- Check cable and terminal limits. Verify the actual equipment markings and cable or conductor restrictions; do not assume that a conductor’s highest insulation-temperature column is available to the circuit.
- Check voltage drop. Use the actual current, circuit configuration, and one-way run length. A longer run may require a larger conductor even if the ampacity check alone appears to pass. Cerrowire provides voltage-drop tables for this check.
- Confirm the complete installation. Check the result against the locally adopted code, amendments, and equipment instructions. For fixed wiring or uncertain conditions, have a qualified electrician or electrical designer determine the final size.
Illustrative copper ampacity values—and their limits
The following figures are copper ampacity table values reproduced in NFPA-hosted 2026 report material. They are not universal permissions to place a particular load on a given gauge: required corrections and adjustments, cable limits, and equipment terminal ratings can change the applicable result.

These columns are table values, not instructions to use the 90°C figure automatically. The applicable limit can be lower because of the wiring method, termination ratings, or installation conditions. Consult the complete locally applicable rules rather than treating a row as a standalone sizing answer. The NFPA 70, National Electrical Code publisher page describes the 2026 edition; US jurisdictions adopt codes locally and may amend them, so the edition in force at the installation site matters.
How application changes the choice
Fixed wiring
For building wiring, the permissible conductor and wiring method, applicable code rules, installation environment, and equipment terminations all shape the selection. A generic gauge chart cannot account for those site-specific requirements. Confirm the locally adopted code and use a qualified professional when the installation details or rules are uncertain.

Long-distance runs
Voltage drop increases with current and conductor length. Check it separately from ampacity; a conductor can meet an ampacity requirement yet produce unacceptable voltage drop for the circuit. Do not apply a percentage target without identifying the governing standard and installation context.

A product phrase such as “12 AWG THHN copper wire” is only a starting point, not a complete design specification. Check that the product’s markings and listing, copper conductor, actual AWG size, THHN/THWN-2 designation where required, voltage and temperature ratings, and length match the specified wiring method and application.

Voltage-drop guidance depends on jurisdiction
The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s 2020 discussion of the UK BS 7671 18th edition gives guidance of 3% for lighting and 5% for other uses. Those figures belong to that UK standards context; they are not universal limits and should not be presented as current US NEC wording. Use the rules and design guidance applicable to the installation’s jurisdiction.

No safe final gauge can be determined from current alone. A circuit-specific assessment needs the load and current, voltage and circuit configuration, conductor run length, wiring method and conductor type, ambient conditions, number of current-carrying conductors, equipment terminal ratings, jurisdiction, and adopted code edition. If any of these are unknown, the answer remains conditional rather than a reliable gauge selection.
