No. On 9 October, The Week reported CSL’s clarification that the orders were already part of the company’s existing orderbook and were at different stages of development. The company also said orders, including export orders, had already been notified to stock exchanges and were in the public domain. It said new firm orders would be notified in line with its policy. The distinction matters: an orderbook count describes work contracted earlier and still being progressed; it does not, on its own, announce new business secured at the event where the count is mentioned. The reported figure is an aggregate of more than 40 ships, not a list of 40 newly signed deals.
What the figure does—and does not—tell readers
- It gives an aggregate vessel count. The reporting says more than 40 ships, but does not itemize the vessels or the contracts behind that total.
- It names examples of foreign markets. The US, Germany and Norway were identified, but the available reporting does not provide a complete country list or a count for each country.
- It does not disclose project-level details. The reports do not establish every buyer, contract value, vessel specification or delivery date. Those details should not be inferred from unrelated or earlier CSL projects.
- It is not a revenue or market-share figure. A ship count alone cannot establish the value, profitability or market share of the orders.
Why an orderbook figure is not a new-order announcement
Companies can have multiple contracts underway at different points, from development through construction and delivery. A reference to ships in an orderbook is therefore different from a disclosure of new firm orders on a particular date. Sonowal’s reported remarks supplied the headline count; CSL’s clarification supplied the key status information: the orders were already in the orderbook.

CSL builds specialized commercial vessels as well as other ships. For example, an official 2022 announcement described commissioning and service operation vessels for offshore-wind commissioning, service, maintenance and operations, with equipment including motion-compensated gangways and cranes.
