Cisco’s Jeetu Patel Sees a ‘Golden Age’ for AI Channel Partners—but Investment Comes First

Cisco’s Jeetu Patel describes artificial intelligence as a multiyear infrastructure and services opportunity for channel partners—not simply another product category to resell. In a January 15, 2026 CRN interview, Cisco’s president and chief product officer argued that AI demand will expand from hyperscalers into enterprise data centers and eventually the edge. That expansion could create work in networking, GPU interconnection, security, observability, integration and managed services.

The opportunity may be substantial, but Cisco’s optimism is not a guarantee of partner profitability. Resellers, MSPs and integrators will need customer demand, specialist skills, delivery capacity and a business model that works even when hardware shortages, technology changes or vendor incentives shift.

What Patel means by a “golden age”

Patel’s central argument is that AI deployments are complex enough to create an unusually broad role for partners. Customers may need compute, GPUs, storage, high-performance networking, cloud connectivity, security, power, data platforms and ongoing operations. Coordinating those pieces is often more difficult than purchasing any one component.

That makes the opportunity less about selling an AI appliance and more about delivering an operational outcome. A capable partner could help a customer assess readiness, design an architecture, connect GPU resources, secure data and models, integrate existing systems, deploy the environment and manage it after launch.

Cisco Business CBS110-16T Unmanaged Switch | 16 Port GE | Limited Lifetime Protection (CBS110-16T-NA)
  • SWITCH PORTS: 16 -Port 10/100/1000
  • SIMPLE: Plug-and-play without a need for IT know-how or support.
  • FLEXIBLE: Extensive portfolio provides ultimate flexibility from 5 to 24 ports and PoE combinations
  • PERFORMANCE: Gigabit Ethernet and integrated quality-of-service (QoS) intelligence optimize delay-sensitive services and improve overall network performance.
  • INNOVATIVE DESIGN: Elegant and compact design, ideal for installation outside of wiring closet such as retail stores, open plan offices, and classrooms

In Cisco’s framing, relevant opportunities include:

  • AI data-center construction and modernization
  • Enterprise AI infrastructure
  • GPU-cluster networking and interconnection
  • Hybrid-cloud and edge architecture
  • Security, identity and network segmentation
  • Observability and machine-data analysis
  • Implementation, migration and systems integration
  • Managed infrastructure and lifecycle services
  • AI-readiness assessments and use-case consulting

These are Cisco’s strategic claims, reported in CRN’s interview, rather than independently verified forecasts. The practical takeaway for partners is nevertheless clear: the highest-value work is likely to sit around architecture, integration and operations, not only hardware resale.

Why the opportunity may move beyond hyperscalers

Patel describes a progression from hyperscaler infrastructure to enterprise data centers and, later, enterprise edge deployments. Hyperscalers represent enormous demand, but that market is concentrated among a relatively small number of customers and infrastructure operators.

Enterprise and edge deployments are more fragmented. A regional integrator or MSP may not build a hyperscale facility, but it could help a manufacturer run computer-vision workloads at a plant, help a healthcare organization protect sensitive data, or connect distributed AI systems to a central cloud environment.

That work introduces practical requirements that many customers cannot address with a simple cloud subscription:

Cisco Business CBS110-5T-D Unmanaged Switch | 5 Port GE | Desktop | Ext PS | Limited Lifetime Protection (CBS110-5T-D-NA)
  • SWITCH PORTS: 5 -Port 10/100/1000
  • SIMPLE: Plug-and-play without a need for IT know-how or support.
  • FLEXIBLE: Extensive portfolio provides ultimate flexibility from 5 to 24 ports and PoE combinations
  • PERFORMANCE: Gigabit Ethernet and integrated quality-of-service (QoS) intelligence optimize delay-sensitive services and improve overall network performance.
  • INNOVATIVE DESIGN: Elegant and compact design, ideal for installation outside of wiring closet such as retail stores, open plan offices, and classrooms
  • Assessing whether current data-center networks can handle AI traffic
  • Connecting on-premises GPU capacity to cloud resources
  • Meeting latency, sovereignty and availability requirements
  • Securing distributed systems with limited local IT staff
  • Monitoring performance, usage and anomalous behavior
  • Planning upgrades as models and hardware change

Edge AI should not be treated as merely a smaller data center. Physical access, unreliable connectivity, local security, distributed patching and data-governance requirements can make edge projects operationally harder than centralized deployments.

Where Cisco says it fits

Cisco positions its networking, security and Splunk capabilities as natural parts of AI infrastructure. Networking must move data between compute, storage and users; security must control access to data, models and automated systems; and observability can help operators understand how those systems behave.

That positioning does not mean Cisco supplies every part of an AI stack. Partners will often need to integrate Cisco technologies with GPU and server vendors, storage providers, cloud platforms, data systems, model providers and facility infrastructure.

For that reason, Cisco’s opportunity for the channel is fundamentally an ecosystem opportunity. A partner that can coordinate several vendors and remain accountable for the customer’s result may create more value than one that simply quotes a single product.

Cisco 360 is the commercial mechanism

Cisco’s partner-program redesign, called Cisco 360, is intended to align incentives with broader capabilities and customer outcomes. CRN reported that the program was scheduled to launch on January 25, 2026, replacing or consolidating older programs and incentives, including VIP, Perform Plus and the Cisco Services Partner Program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because those dates and mechanics were reported around the launch period, partners should confirm current rules directly with Cisco rather than assume every reported detail remains unchanged.

According to CRN’s reporting, the new structure includes:

  • A Cisco Partner Incentive, or CPI, intended to reflect partner value and investment
  • Measurement across foundational elements, capabilities, performance and engagement
  • Eligible offers and rebate rates connected to areas such as AI, security, campus refresh, premium services, adoption and renewal
  • Replacement of traditional metal designations such as Gold with Cisco Partner and Cisco Preferred Partner designations
  • Portfolio-specific designations

CRN reported a value-index threshold of 5.0 for adding a portfolio name to a partner designation and 7.5 for achieving Cisco Preferred Partner status for that portfolio. Those thresholds should be treated as reported program details, not universal guarantees; geography, partner type and later revisions may affect eligibility.

The same reporting said Cisco Preferred partners were expected to become eligible for Secure AI Infrastructure and Secure Networking specializations beginning in February 2026. Current availability should be confirmed before a partner bases an investment decision on either specialization.

CRN’s Cisco 360 coverage provides the reported program context.

The opportunity is not the same as the incentive

Partners should keep four ideas separate:

  1. Market opportunity: Customers may need help designing and operating AI infrastructure.
  2. Cisco opportunity: Cisco wants to sell networking, security, observability and related technologies into that buildout.
  3. Partner opportunity: A partner may earn from consulting, integration, implementation, managed operations and lifecycle work.
  4. Program incentive: Cisco 360 may reward specific portfolios, capabilities and behaviors.

A rebate or designation does not automatically make an AI practice profitable. Training, certifications, hiring, presales work, financing, support and delivery risk may arrive well before revenue. Partners should model the full investment rather than count only the potential incentive.

Capabilities partners will need

Technical capabilities

  • AI infrastructure and data-center architecture
  • GPU-cluster connectivity and high-performance networking
  • Cloud, hybrid-cloud and edge design
  • Cybersecurity architecture and zero-trust controls
  • Observability, machine-data analysis and automation
  • Data governance and AI workload protection

Services capabilities

  • Readiness assessments and use-case discovery
  • Architecture, design and implementation
  • Migration and custom integration
  • Managed infrastructure and security operations
  • Lifecycle management and capacity optimization
  • Infrastructure-cost governance and outcome measurement

Commercial capabilities

  • Selling business outcomes instead of components
  • Creating repeatable offers rather than one-off pilots
  • Estimating operating costs and utilization
  • Converting project work into recurring services
  • Protecting margins during rapid hardware changes

Partners can review Cisco’s partner-program entry point and its training and certification information. Costs and eligibility vary, and the supplied reporting did not establish a standard partner fee or payout schedule.

Supply constraints create both opportunity and risk

Patel characterized AI infrastructure as supply-constrained, including in compute, networking and power. If customers need capacity quickly, partners that can plan, coordinate vendors and deliver reliably may command more value.

Shortages can also produce serious exposure:

  • Unpredictable lead times and hardware allocation
  • Customer projects delayed by unavailable components
  • Working-capital and inventory risk
  • Margin pressure when customers compare scarce capacity
  • Rapid obsolescence as GPUs and networking designs evolve
  • Dependence on a small number of infrastructure suppliers

Patel also used an OpenAI user-growth comparison to illustrate potential demand. That comparison is an interview example and should not be treated as an independently verified market statistic.

What smaller partners should do

A small or midsize partner does not necessarily need to build a broad AI practice. A narrower, customer-backed strategy may be more realistic.

Possible entry points include:

  • AI-readiness assessments for a specific industry
  • Secure networking for AI workloads
  • Edge AI for manufacturing, retail or logistics
  • Hybrid-cloud connectivity and migration
  • Managed monitoring and lifecycle services
  • Cisco-plus-cloud integration
  • Security and governance for AI-enabled applications

The key is repeatability. A partner should identify a defined customer problem, create a standard delivery method, calculate staffing and support requirements, and determine whether the work can lead to recurring revenue.

Questions to answer before investing

  • Do existing customers have funded production AI projects, or only experiments?
  • Can the team design across compute, networking, storage and security?
  • Can it integrate Cisco products with non-Cisco infrastructure?
  • How many engineers need training or hiring?
  • What presales effort is required before a contract is signed?
  • Can the business support 24/7 operations if customers require it?
  • Will rebates offset the cost of certifications and delivery capacity?
  • What happens if hardware is delayed or replaced by a newer generation?
  • How dependent will revenue become on Cisco’s rules and roadmap?
  • Which Cisco 360 thresholds and eligible offers apply in the partner’s market?

The financial test behind the “golden age”

AI demand may be durable even if individual models, chips or agent platforms have short product cycles. Data centers, networks, security architectures and operational services tend to require planning and ongoing maintenance. But a durable market does not guarantee attractive returns for every provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Partners should distinguish experimentation from production workloads, infrastructure refreshes from new AI revenue, and project billing from recurring services revenue. They should also account for utilization risk: newly trained specialists may remain underused if customers delay deployment.

Cisco 360 can potentially improve focus and reward deeper capabilities, but partners should not build an AI practice solely to reach a designation. The investment should make sense based on customer demand and delivery economics even if a rebate changes.

Bottom line

Patel’s “golden age” thesis is best understood as a broad infrastructure-and-services argument. AI can create channel work in architecture, networking, security, observability, integration and managed operations as deployments move from hyperscalers into enterprises and the edge.

For partners, the opportunity is credible but conditional. The winners are more likely to be firms that can deliver secure, integrated and repeatable customer outcomes—not resellers relying on AI branding or program incentives alone.
