8 Big AWS Executive Departures: VPs and Top Engineers Leave

By TheFinanceBase Team 7 min read

Eight notable AWS leaders were reported to have left the company by August 2025, including executives and senior engineering leaders responsible for generative AI, Amazon Q Apps, S3, data centers, OpenSearch, Glue, partner strategy, and regional finance. Several moved to Snowflake, Siemens, BNSF Railway, F5, CoreWeave, and Visa.

The departures are strategically important because they occurred during an aggressive AWS expansion into artificial intelligence, custom chips, data centers, and modernized data platforms. However, the public record does not establish a company-wide exodus, coordinated departures, or an AWS organizational crisis.

The eight AWS leaders reported to have left

CRN’s August 15, 2025 report identified the following eight departures. The list combines vice presidents, general managers, heads of engineering, a data-center leader, and a regional finance executive. They were influential AWS leaders, but they were not eight equivalent C-suite departures.

What businesses and services are affected?

AI and generative AI

Vasi Philomin was the most strategically prominent departure in the list. CRN associated him with AWS machine learning and AI leadership and credited him with helping build Amazon Bedrock. His reported background also included Amazon Q, Amazon Lex, Voice ID for Amazon Connect, Amazon Monitron, CodeWhisperer, and Amazon Titan-related initiatives. His move to Siemens demonstrates that industrial enterprises are competing for cloud-based AI leadership alongside technology vendors.

Krishna Srinivasan Iyer led engineering for Amazon Q Apps, not necessarily Amazon Q engineering as a whole. Q Apps was positioned as a way to create generative-AI-powered internal applications. His move to BNSF Railway is relevant to enterprise adoption: cloud and AI leaders are increasingly moving into large operating companies that want to build internal software and AI capabilities.

Storage, data, search, and security

Kevin Miller’s responsibilities connected physical infrastructure with AWS’s storage history. As VP of Global Data Centers, his reported remit included land acquisition, design, engineering, operations, automation, energy, and sustainability. He had also been VP/GM of Amazon S3.

Prathiban Mohanasundaram led engineering for S3 Express and S3 Edge and was also associated with S3 Tables and the data plane for S3’s Object Metadata Store. His move to Snowflake matters because it reflects competition for experienced storage and data-platform engineers, but it does not show that Snowflake acquired an AWS team.

Nitin Bahadur led engineering for AWS Glue and Amazon AppFlow. Glue focuses on data integration, while AppFlow transfers data between SaaS applications. His move to CoreWeave places data-platform engineering experience at an AI-focused infrastructure company, although CoreWeave is not a full-spectrum AWS replacement.

Ashok Thirunarayanan led engineering for OpenSearch Serverless, Ingestion, and Security Analytics. CRN reported that these services support search and analysis at petabyte scale across AI, cybersecurity, observability, finance, and retail use cases. His reported scope should not be expanded to mean that he led all of OpenSearch or all AWS security engineering.

Partners and finance

Christopher Niederman was identified as managing director of AWS Industries and Solutions, with a background in global systems integrators and worldwide strategic alliances. His move to Snowflake is commercially significant because Snowflake competes with AWS in parts of the data-platform market while also operating within the broader cloud ecosystem. CRN did not identify Niederman as an AWS vice president, so that label should not be applied to his former role without additional evidence.

Arturo Villarreal was CFO for AWS sales in Latin America and had held commercial-sales finance roles in Brazil. His move to Visa is a finance and regional-commercial transition, not evidence of technical or product attrition. Including him in the list illustrates why “eight AWS leaders” is more accurate than “eight top engineers.”

Why the departures attracted attention

The timing overlaps with an unusually intense AWS investment cycle. Amazon’s 2025 shareholder letter, published in 2026, said AWS’s AI revenue run rate exceeded $15 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Amazon also said AWS added 3.9 gigawatts of power capacity in 2025 and expected to double total AWS power capacity by the end of 2027. The letter reported a $142 billion annualized AWS revenue run rate in the fourth quarter of 2025, up 24% year over year, and emphasized the growing importance of Trainium and Graviton.

These are figures and expectations reported by Amazon, not independent conclusions. They show why leadership continuity matters, but they also provide an important counterpoint to a simple decline narrative: an organization can experience senior turnover while continuing to grow capacity, revenue, and strategic investment.

For scale, CRN described AWS as a $124 billion cloud company and cited Q2 2025 AWS revenue of $30.9 billion and operating income of $10.2 billion. It also cited Synergy Research Group market-share estimates of approximately 30% for AWS, 20% for Microsoft, and 13% for Google Cloud. Those figures are specific to the period reported and should not be treated as current market shares.

Does this prove an AWS brain drain?

No—not from the available evidence. The departures are notable because they span several strategic areas: AI, storage, data centers, search, partner relationships, and finance. But the CRN list is a curated set of prominent exits, not an official attrition report or complete census of AWS employees.

What the evidence does and does not show

  • It does show: multiple experienced AWS leaders moved to competitors, adjacent technology companies, and large enterprise employers.
  • It does not show: that AWS’s overall turnover rose unusually, that the exits were coordinated, or that customers experienced service failures or roadmap disruption.
  • It does not establish: that AWS lost its “best” engineers, that entire teams followed departing leaders, or that the departures were caused by Amazon’s culture or strategy.

Several interpretations are plausible. Senior AWS employees have experience operating globally at extreme scale, managing cloud economics, serving enterprise buyers, building reliable distributed systems, and coordinating partner ecosystems. AI infrastructure companies need leaders who have shipped production systems, while industrial and financial companies want executives who understand how to deploy technology across large organizations.

Compensation, responsibility, autonomy, personal career timing, and the opportunity to lead a faster-growing or smaller organization may also influence individual moves. Those are analytical possibilities, not explanations established by the source reporting.

What changed after the original eight?

A separate 2026 report added another significant AWS leadership change. Investing.com, citing Reuters, reported that Dave Brown would leave Amazon after 19 years. Brown was an AWS senior vice president who led compute and machine-learning services and advised Amazon CEO Andy Jassy as a member of Amazon’s S-team.

AWS CEO Matt Garman said Brown was leaving for another role outside Amazon. Dave Treadwell was scheduled to replace him beginning August 1, 2026. Brown was not one of the eight people in CRN’s August 2025 list; this is subsequent context, not an expansion of the original roster.

What customers, partners, and investors should watch

Leadership departures alone are not a sufficient reason to migrate workloads or change a cloud strategy. Customers should instead look for observable effects:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Named successors: whether AWS promptly identifies leaders for affected businesses.
  2. Roadmap continuity: whether product releases, documentation, and service commitments continue on schedule.
  3. Support and account coverage: whether enterprise customers see changes in escalation paths or partner coverage.
  4. Hiring and organizational signals: whether AWS continues recruiting in AI, storage, infrastructure, and data engineering.
  5. Operational evidence: whether there are documented service issues, delayed launches, or material changes to product direction.
  6. Commercial effects: whether pricing, contracts, regional coverage, or partner programs change—not merely whether a senior person changed employers.

Partners should pay particular attention to channel leadership and systems-integrator relationships. Competitors may view the moves to Snowflake, CoreWeave, and F5 as opportunities to recruit more AWS talent, but a single executive move does not prove that a company has gained AWS’s internal knowledge, teams, or proprietary technology.

Why role precision matters

Calling all eight people “VPs” overstates the evidence. The group included two clearly identified vice president or general-manager roles, several heads of engineering, a regional CFO, and a managing director. “Top engineer” is a journalistic description rather than a standardized Amazon rank.

Tenure also requires context. A 14- or 17-year veteran may carry extensive institutional knowledge, but tenure alone does not prove that the person was irreplaceable. The effect of a departure depends on the size of the organization, the strength of the deputy bench, succession planning, and whether the product has distributed ownership.

Likewise, a move to Siemens, BNSF Railway, or Visa may indicate that AWS expertise is spreading into enterprise customers rather than that a cloud competitor is winning. Snowflake and CoreWeave are more directly relevant to platform competition, but their businesses overlap with AWS only partially.

Bottom line

The eight departures reported in August 2025 represent meaningful leadership turnover across AWS’s AI, data, storage, infrastructure, partner, and finance organizations. Dave Brown’s separately reported 2026 exit adds to the visibility of senior leadership change.

Still, the available evidence supports a measured conclusion: AWS is navigating substantial strategic change and a competitive talent market, not demonstrably suffering a company-wide collapse. Customers should judge the situation through successors, roadmap execution, reliability, support, and commercial terms—not through the departure count alone.
