But do not choose it because of a low first-year promotion alone. Check the normal renewal price, premium status, privacy terms, transfer rules, and your brand’s fit before paying.
As of September 5, 2026, the most important pricing change is a registry wholesale increase that took effect on August 25, 2026: the standard .xyz wholesale price rose from $12.10 to $13.30 for registration, renewal, and transfer. Retail prices vary by registrar, taxes, fees, promotions, and the individual domain name. See the registry price notice.

Is a .xyz domain worth buying?
A .xyz domain is a real, unrestricted generic top-level domain (gTLD), not a country-code extension. It has been publicly available since 2014 and is operated under an ICANN registry agreement. ICANN’s .xyz registry agreement confirms its status as an established domain extension.
The extension can be a sensible choice when:
- You are launching a technology startup or experimental product.
- You need a short, memorable name whose .com equivalent is unavailable or too expensive.
- You are building a developer, design, art, or personal portfolio.
- You are creating a community, publication, campaign, landing page, or side project.
- Your project is associated with blockchain or Web3. This is common positioning, not a requirement.
Consider another extension when the audience strongly expects a conventional address. A mainstream business may benefit from the familiarity of .com; a nonprofit or community organization may be better represented by .org; a software audience may prefer .dev, .app, .tech, or .io; and a local business may benefit from a relevant country-code domain.

- It can be a gift option
The extension itself does not guarantee trust, search rankings, security, or email deliverability. A domain’s reputation depends on its own history, content, links, security, and email practices.
How much does a .xyz domain cost?
There is no single universal retail price. Budget for the full ownership period, not just the advertised first year.
| Cost item | What to check |
|---|---|
| First-year registration | Promotional or regular price shown by the registrar |
| Annual renewal | The amount charged after the promotion ends |
| Transfer | Price and whether a one-year extension is included |
| Premium registration | Name-specific acquisition price |
| Premium renewal | Recurring annual price, which may remain elevated |
| Privacy | Whether WHOIS privacy is included, optional, or unavailable |
| Fees and taxes | Possible ICANN fee, local taxes, and other checkout charges |
| Website services | Hosting, email, builder, SSL, backups, and security are separate costs |
Observed registrar prices
At the time of the research observation, Namecheap displayed a $2 first-year promotional registration price and a displayed $19.48 renewal price for .xyz. Its page also showed a possible $0.20 ICANN fee. These are date-sensitive retail figures, not permanent rates; promotions and checkout totals can change. Check Namecheap’s current .xyz pricing.
Porkbun’s pricing page showed $6.99 for a regular non-premium .xyz registration before the registry increase. Because the registry price changed on August 25, 2026, verify the live registration, renewal, and transfer amounts at checkout. Check Porkbun’s current domain pricing.
Cloudflare Registrar says it charges the registry price without a registrar markup. Its final amount can still reflect registry pricing, taxes, and any applicable fees, and premium domains can cost substantially more. See Cloudflare’s .xyz Registrar information.
Use a five-year cost calculation
Use this formula before buying:
First-year cost = registration + applicable fees + taxes + optional services
Long-term cost = renewal price × remaining years + taxes + optional services
For example, using the observed Namecheap figures, a simple five-year illustration would be $2 for year one plus four renewals at $19.48, or $79.92 before applicable fees and taxes. That is an illustration of the pricing difference—not a guarantee of the current checkout amount.
For a standard domain, use the registrar’s displayed renewal price as your budget. For a premium name, use the exact recurring price shown for that specific domain.
Standard versus premium .xyz domains
Some .xyz names are classified as premium by the registry. Premium status can apply to short, attractive, or otherwise desirable names and can change the economics completely.
Premium pricing may apply to:
- Registration only.
- Registration and renewal.
- Registration, renewal, and transfer.
The registry distinguishes variable-price premium domains from premium names that may have standard pricing after acquisition. Read the individual terms rather than assuming every premium domain follows the same model. Review XYZ’s premium-domain information.
Before purchasing a premium name, confirm all four figures:
Rank #2
- The price to register it today.
- The annual renewal price.
- The transfer price.
- Any restoration, redemption, or aftermarket charges.
If the recurring renewal amount is not clearly displayed, do not buy the domain until the registrar confirms it.

The best registrar depends on whether you value at-cost pricing, bundled services, simple management, or a large marketplace.
Cloudflare Registrar: best for technical users
Cloudflare is a strong fit for developers, startups, and users already using Cloudflare DNS, CDN, or security services. It advertises at-cost registration, WHOIS privacy where permitted, DNSSEC, and integrated Cloudflare services.
The trade-off is that it is built around Cloudflare’s ecosystem and may feel less like a traditional beginner-oriented registrar. It may also be less suitable if you want extensive add-ons, marketplace tools, or a broad bundled hosting experience. Verify current nameserver, transfer, and premium-domain requirements before buying. See Cloudflare’s registration steps.
Namecheap: best for beginners who want a broad bundle
Namecheap offers a familiar domain-search and management workflow alongside hosting, email, SSL, DNS, and website-building products. It advertises free privacy for eligible domains and provides common management features such as DNSSEC and registrar lock.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its main drawback is the gap between the observed first-year promotion and renewal price. Review the cart carefully, including the renewal amount, taxes, ICANN fee, privacy terms, and add-ons. Check Namecheap’s current offer.
Porkbun: best for straightforward domain management
Porkbun is worth comparing if you want competitive non-premium pricing, privacy, DNS management, and fewer bundled product distractions. It can be attractive for buyers who care about long-term domain costs.
Its ecosystem is smaller than a large all-in-one provider’s, so readers seeking enterprise support, integrated productivity tools, or extensive hosting options may prefer another registrar. Confirm prices after the 2026 registry increase. See Porkbun’s .xyz page.
GoDaddy: best for a large product ecosystem
GoDaddy offers domains, hosting, website building, business email, auctions, and support products in one ecosystem. It may suit users who prefer a mainstream provider and want many services under one account.

How to buy a .xyz domain
- Choose a registrar. Compare renewal pricing, privacy, DNS controls, transfer terms, support, and premium policies.
- Search the exact name. Enter the brand or phrase with the .xyz extension.
- Check availability and status. Confirm whether the result is standard, registry premium, registrar premium, or an aftermarket listing.
- Open the price details. Check registration, renewal, transfer, restoration, taxes, and any ICANN fee.
- Review privacy and add-ons. Remove unnecessary hosting, email, SSL, or security products unless you actually need them.
- Create or sign in to your account. Use a monitored email address and a strong, unique password with multi-factor authentication where available.
- Enter accurate registrant information. Incorrect contact information can create verification and account-recovery problems.
- Choose auto-renewal. It is usually the safest option for a business or important personal domain, provided your payment details remain current.
- Pay and complete registration. Save the receipt and note the expiration date.
- Verify your account email. An unverified email can prevent the domain from connecting or can lead to suspension.
- Configure DNS or nameservers. Point the domain to your hosting, builder, email provider, or CDN.
- Test the result. Check the website, HTTPS, www and root versions, and email after DNS changes propagate.
After successful registration, the domain should appear in your account with an expiration date and controls for nameservers and DNS. Registration creates the address; it does not create the website.
How to connect your .xyz domain to a website
You can register the domain with one company and host the website with another. Hosting elsewhere does not normally require transferring the domain. See XYZ’s domain-management FAQ.
Option 1: Replace the nameservers
Your hosting company or website builder may provide two or more nameservers. At the registrar, replace the existing nameservers with the provider’s values.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is generally the simplest approach for beginners using shared hosting or a managed platform. The new DNS provider becomes authoritative, so records must be managed there.
Option 2: Keep your current DNS provider
Leave the current nameservers in place and add the records supplied by your host:
- A: Points a hostname to an IPv4 address.
- AAAA: Points a hostname to an IPv6 address.
- CNAME: Points a subdomain to another hostname, often for hosted services.
- MX: Directs email to your email provider.
- TXT: Used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, ownership verification, and other policies.
Do not change nameservers and DNS records at the same time unless you know which provider is authoritative. Records entered at an inactive DNS provider will not control the public domain.
Website builders and SSL
A builder typically asks you either to change nameservers or to add specific DNS records. Follow the builder’s current domain-connection screen because labels and required records vary.
HTTPS may be supplied by the host, website builder, CDN, or a separate certificate service. Cloudflare advertises free Universal SSL/TLS for websites proxied through its network, but the exact setup still depends on DNS and hosting configuration.
How to set up email on a .xyz domain
A domain can display a website without providing an email mailbox. Professional email requires a separate email provider and DNS configuration.
Follow the provider’s instructions to add:
- MX records to receive mail.
- SPF to identify approved sending services.
- DKIM to cryptographically authenticate outgoing messages.
- DMARC to tell receiving systems how to handle authentication failures and to receive reports.
Be especially careful when changing nameservers. A new DNS zone may not contain your existing MX, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records, causing email to stop even while the website works.

Common .xyz domain problems and fixes
The name looked cheap but is premium
Open the detailed price information and check registration, renewal, transfer, and restoration charges. If the recurring cost is too high, choose a comparable non-premium variation.

The first year is much cheaper than renewal
Record the renewal amount before payment, calculate the five-year cost, enable auto-renewal if appropriate, and set an independent calendar reminder. Promotional pricing usually applies only to the initial term.
The domain will not connect to hosting
Check the nameservers, confirm that records were added at the authoritative DNS provider, remove conflicting A, AAAA, or CNAME records, and add any verification record required by the host. Also confirm that the registrant email is verified and that the domain is not suspended or locked.
XYZ support materials note that incomplete ICANN-mandated email verification can prevent a domain from connecting and may require more than one verification email. Review the domain-management guidance.
The website works but email does not
Re-enter the email provider’s MX records and confirm SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. Check whether changing nameservers replaced the old DNS zone.
Recommended Free Tools
The domain expires
Expiration can lead to suspension, reactivation or redemption fees, auction, or loss of the name. XYZ’s registration terms explain that expired domains may eventually be discontinued, auctioned, or made available to another party. Read the XYZ registration terms.
Prevent this by enabling auto-renewal, keeping payment details current, monitoring the account email, and renewing before the expiration date. Do not rely only on reminder emails.
A transfer is blocked
Common causes include a registration or prior transfer within the previous 60 days, an active registrar lock, an incorrect EPP authorization code, an approaching expiration date, or a dispute or identity issue. Disable the lock and request the correct authorization code when eligible. See XYZ’s transfer terms.
The name is unavailable
Try a meaningful modifier, shorter brandable variation, product qualifier, or geographic term. You can also compare .com, .net, .dev, .app, .tech, .io, or a relevant country-code extension. If you consider an aftermarket purchase, check trademark risk, ownership history, and renewal pricing first.
Trademark and reputation checks
Availability does not mean you have the legal right to use a name. Search relevant trademark databases and avoid names that imitate established companies, products, public figures, or competitors. XYZ’s premium-domain information places responsibility on the registrant to avoid third-party rights violations. Review the registry’s premium-domain guidance.
WHOIS privacy can redact or proxy some publicly visible details, but it does not make the registrant anonymous to the registrar, registry, authorities, or parties with valid legal process.
.xyz alternatives
- .com: Usually the most familiar choice for a mainstream commercial business, especially when customers will hear or type the address offline.
- .org: Often a natural fit for nonprofits, communities, and public-interest organizations.
- .dev: Clear software and developer positioning, but compare its renewal cost and HTTPS requirements.
- .app: Useful for application-oriented brands, with technical requirements that should be confirmed before launch.
- .tech: Communicates a technology focus but may have different promotional and renewal pricing.
- .io: Common among technology companies, though its cost and long-term fit should be compared rather than assumed.
- Country-code domains: Can reinforce local trust when the business primarily serves one country or region.
Choose based on audience expectations, brand clarity, legal safety, and total cost. The cheapest first-year extension is rarely the only financial consideration.
