Bitcoin vs. Ethereum: Which Has Deeper Trading Liquidity?

Bitcoin (BTC) had deeper trading liquidity than Ethereum (ETH) in the latest cited centralized-exchange comparisons. CoinGecko’s 2026 comparison found substantially more BTC order-book depth at its measured narrow price ranges. TokenInsight’s September 2026 sample also found lower, more stable BTC spot slippage overall and tighter BTC spot spreads than ETH.

Those results describe selected exchanges, pairs, trade sizes and observation periods. They are not a promise that every BTC market will beat every ETH market at every moment. For a real trade, the relevant question is whether the specific venue, pair, side, size and market segment can absorb your order without moving the price too far.

The direct answer

Bitcoin is the more liquid asset in the latest published centralized-exchange comparisons reviewed for this article. CoinGecko’s 2026 report measured median BTC depth of $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side across eight selected exchanges. At the report’s stated narrow range, ETH depth was $13–14 million. TokenInsight’s September 2026 study, based on nine selected exchanges, likewise reported lower and more stable BTC spot slippage for its tested order sizes and a tighter BTC spot spread for the leading venues.

“More liquid” does not mean that a BTC order will always receive a better fill. Liquidity is local and time-sensitive. A BTC-USD book on one exchange can be thinner than an ETH-USDT book on another; a $500,000 market order can behave very differently from a $100,000 order; and a futures book can rank differently from a spot book. The evidence supports a broad BTC advantage in the specified samples, not a universal rule.

What trading liquidity measures

Liquidity is the market’s ability to absorb buying or selling without a large change in the execution price. A useful definition from Kaiko Developer Hub describes a deep market as one with enough bids and asks on both sides to handle large orders while keeping prices stable. Three measurements explain most BTC-versus-ETH comparisons.

Order-book depth

Depth is the value or amount of resting bids and asks within a defined distance of the mid-price. If a report measures a narrow band, it counts orders close to the current price. A wider band includes orders farther away and therefore normally shows a larger cumulative value. Depth must always be read with its band: BTC around ±$100 and ETH around ±$3 are not identical absolute price intervals, even when a publisher presents them as its standard comparison.

Bid-ask spread

The spread is the difference between the best ask and the best bid. It is the immediate quoted cost of crossing from one side of the market to the other, before considering the additional price impact caused by consuming several price levels. A narrow spread is useful for small, immediately executable trades, but it does not prove that a large order can be filled nearby.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slippage

Slippage estimates how far the eventual execution price moves from a reference price for a hypothetical order. It changes with order size and direction. A $100,000 sell and a $500,000 sell can produce very different results in the same book. Median slippage describes the middle observation in a sample; a P90 figure means 90% of the observations were at or below that level, leaving the worst 10% above it.

CoinGecko’s 2026 depth comparison

CoinGecko’s report, updated September 30, 2026, compared eight selected centralized exchanges. It reported the following median cumulative depth in its stated narrow ranges:

Asset Buy-side median depth Sell-side median depth Range used in the report
Bitcoin $29 million $37 million Approximately ±$100 around the BTC mid-price
Ethereum $13–14 million $13–14 million Approximately ±$3 around the ETH mid-price

On that report-specific basis, ETH depth was about 35–45% of BTC depth, compared with at least 60% in CoinGecko’s prior-year comparison. CoinGecko described the BTC result as an almost 50% increase versus its 2025 comparison. Seven of the eight exchanges still held more than $1 million of ETH depth on each side at the stated range, so the ETH books were not uniformly shallow; they were simply smaller than the BTC books in this sample.

The different dollar bands matter. A ±$100 interval for BTC and a ±$3 interval for ETH represent the methodology chosen by the report, not an economically identical percentage move. The safest reading is therefore: under CoinGecko’s published definitions, selected exchanges displayed much more cumulative BTC liquidity than ETH. The ratio should not be transplanted to a different band or treated as a constant market-wide multiplier.

TokenInsight’s September 2026 execution measures

TokenInsight sampled official exchange API snapshots every 30 minutes from August 16 through September 14, 2026, in UTC+8, across nine selected exchanges. Its spot-market findings also favored BTC overall. The report gave these venue- and size-specific observations:

Market and order Venue Reported result
BTC spot sell, $100,000 Binance Near-zero median slippage; 0.007% P90 slippage
BTC spot sell, $500,000 MEXC 0.005% median slippage
BTC spot sell, $500,000 Binance Best reported P90 slippage at 0.018%
ETH spot, $100,000 Binance Lowest reported median slippage at 0.002%
ETH spot, $500,000 Binance Lowest slippage among the exchanges in the report; differences became more pronounced at this size

The figures show why a single average can mislead. Binance’s ETH median slippage at $100,000 was reported as 0.002%, while BTC’s corresponding median was described as near zero and its P90 as 0.007%. At $500,000, the report highlighted MEXC’s 0.005% BTC median and Binance’s 0.018% BTC P90. The report did not provide one universal ETH percentage that can be substituted for every venue and order condition; it said Binance retained the lowest ETH slippage and that exchange differences widened at the larger size.

TokenInsight also found a large quoted-spread difference in its spot sample. Binance, Bitget, MEXC and HTX were in the tightest BTC group at 0.001 basis points. ETH’s narrowest reported spread was 0.040 basis points on KuCoin, while most other included exchanges were at 0.041 basis points. These are sampled venue results, not permanent characteristics of the assets.

What the numbers imply for a large order

Percentages become easier to interpret when converted to approximate dollar impact. A 0.007% P90 slippage level on a $100,000 BTC sell corresponds to about $7 of price impact at that percentile. A 0.018% P90 level on a $500,000 BTC sell corresponds to about $90. A 0.002% median slippage on a $100,000 ETH order corresponds to about $2 at the median observation. These calculations are illustrations of the reported percentages, not guarantees of a particular fill; fees, spread crossing, latency and price movement during execution can add to the realized cost.

The distinction between median and P90 is important for risk control. A low median can hide occasional poor fills during fast markets. A trader planning to sell $500,000 should examine a high percentile or a live depth sweep rather than relying only on the middle observation. Conversely, a small investor crossing one or two levels may care more about the current spread than about a book-depth statistic calculated over a broad band.

Which asset has less slippage for a large trade?

In the cited samples, BTC generally had the lower slippage, especially when the order became large enough to consume multiple price levels. That is the practical meaning of deeper books: more resting liquidity is available near the midpoint, so a market order can be completed with less displacement. The advantage is not identical for every test. TokenInsight reported Binance as the lowest-slippage venue for a $100,000 ETH spot order at a 0.002% median, while BTC’s reported median was near zero. At $500,000, however, the report said cross-exchange differences became more pronounced and Binance retained the lowest ETH result, while its BTC P90 was 0.018%.

For a trader, the correct comparison is not “BTC versus ETH” in isolation. It is, for example, “a $300,000 BTC-USDT market sell on exchange A versus a $300,000 ETH-USDT market sell on exchange A, observed at the same time.” Match the side, notional, order type and measurement window. Otherwise, a favorable result may simply reflect a smaller test, a different quote currency or calmer conditions.

How spread figures translate into cost

TokenInsight’s spread values are expressed in basis points. One basis point equals 0.01 percentage point, so 0.001 basis points is an extremely small quoted difference, while 0.040 basis points is larger. The figures should be read as the report presents them and not confused with percentage points. The spread is only the first layer of cost: a market order also pays the impact of walking through the book, plus the exchange fee and any conversion or funding cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A limit order can avoid crossing the full spread, but it introduces execution risk. The order may fill only partially or not at all, and the market can move away while it waits. A market order provides immediacy but accepts the available prices. The more urgent the trade and the larger its size, the more useful a live depth calculation becomes.

Why traded volume alone is insufficient

Reported volume measures completed transactions over a period. Depth measures resting orders available near the price at a given moment. A market can record high volume while offering less nearby depth for the side and size you need. Volume may also be aggregated across several instruments and exchanges, whereas your order executes in one pair on one venue. Kaiko’s market-liquidity guidance cautions that asset-level aggregation answers a different question from the liquidity of a single order book.

For BTC and ETH, compare volume only after matching the market segment, quote currency, venue set and time window. A 24-hour aggregate that combines BTC spot, perpetuals and multiple quote currencies cannot establish the cost of an ETH spot order in one specific pair. Depth, spread and simulated slippage together provide a more relevant picture.

How to check liquidity before placing a trade

  1. Choose the exact market. Record whether you are trading spot, a dated future or a perpetual contract, then write down the exchange and pair, such as BTC against a specified quote currency.
  2. Define the order. State the notional value, direction and order type. A market sell for $100,000 consumes asks or bids differently from a limit buy for the same amount.
  3. Set a price band. Decide how far from the mid-price you are willing to look for available orders. Do not compare BTC and ETH depth figures calculated with different bands without preserving that qualification.
  4. Read both sides of the book. For an immediate sell, inspect bids below the mid-price; for an immediate buy, inspect asks above it. Sum the available value level by level until it reaches your intended size.
  5. Estimate the average execution price. Divide the total notional by the amount filled across those levels. Compare that result with the mid-price to estimate price impact before fees.
  6. Check spread and recent stability. A tight current spread is helpful, but watch whether displayed orders disappear or reappear rapidly. A single snapshot can be unusually favorable.
  7. Split the order when appropriate. If the book cannot absorb the full amount inside your allowed band, consider smaller child orders or a limit strategy. Splitting does not remove market risk, and it can increase execution time and exposure to price changes.
  8. Recheck immediately before submission. Resting orders are added and removed continuously. Historical reports can frame expectations, but only a current book shows what is available now.

Spot and futures liquidity are different questions

Do not carry a spot conclusion into derivatives automatically. Spot liquidity concerns direct ownership of the asset in a particular pair. Futures and perpetual liquidity depend on contract specifications, margin, funding and the order book for that contract. TokenInsight’s futures rankings changed with the measurement band: MEXC led combined BTC and ETH futures depth at a 0.03% band, while Bitget led at a 0.05% band. The change demonstrates that even within one market segment, the winner can depend on how “depth” is defined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your trade is a perpetual, compare the exact contract and band rather than using CoinGecko’s spot-style BTC and ETH depth figures. If you are moving between spot and futures, account for basis, funding and liquidation mechanics separately; a deeper visible book does not eliminate those risks.

How to interpret exchange rankings

A ranking in a selected-venue study is conditional. It reflects the exchanges included, the pairs observed, the time period, the API snapshots available and the calculation method. It does not certify that one exchange is always best, nor does it account for every jurisdiction, account tier, fee schedule or operational restriction.

Use rankings as a shortlist for inspection, then verify the live book for your own pair. If two venues appear close, the practical choice may turn on withdrawal limits, latency, fees, custody arrangements or whether your account can access the quoted market. Those factors affect the total execution outcome even when displayed depth is similar.

Limits of the BTC-versus-ETH evidence

  • Selected exchanges only: CoinGecko covered eight centralized exchanges and TokenInsight covered nine. Neither report represents every venue.
  • Different methodologies: CoinGecko reported cumulative depth in asset-specific narrow ranges; TokenInsight used API snapshots, slippage tests and spread observations.
  • Different dates: TokenInsight’s observations ran from August 16 to September 14, 2026, while CoinGecko’s report was updated September 30, 2026. Books may have changed since then.
  • Market conditions move: News, volatility and liquidations can remove resting orders quickly. A historical median cannot promise a future execution.
  • Pair and quote effects: Liquidity is measured in a particular pair and quote currency. Aggregating across pairs can obscure the book you actually trade.
  • Order direction matters: Buy-side and sell-side depth are not necessarily equal, and the relevant side depends on your order.

A practical comparison checklist

Before deciding whether BTC or ETH is more suitable for a particular transaction, write down the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Spot, futures or perpetual market.
  • Exchange, trading pair and quote currency.
  • Buy or sell direction.
  • Notional size and expected number of child orders.
  • Depth band around the mid-price, or the spread and slippage method.
  • Statistic used: snapshot, median, average or percentile.
  • Observation period and time zone.
  • Whether the result is exchange-specific or aggregated.
  • Fees, latency and any account or regional limits that could change the realized fill.

Bottom line

In the latest cited centralized-exchange studies, Bitcoin had the deeper order books, lower reported large-order slippage overall and tighter spot spreads than Ethereum. CoinGecko measured $29 million of median BTC buy-side depth and $37 million of sell-side depth versus $13–14 million for ETH in its specified ranges. TokenInsight’s September 2026 sample reinforced the broad BTC advantage, while also showing that venue and order size matter. Treat those figures as historical, method-specific evidence; check the live book for the exact pair, side and size before trading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is more liquid, Bitcoin or Ethereum?

Bitcoin was more liquid in the latest cited selected-exchange comparisons. CoinGecko reported much greater BTC order-book depth, and TokenInsight generally found lower BTC spot slippage and tighter BTC spreads. The conclusion applies to those venues, dates and methods rather than every market at every moment.

Does Bitcoin have deeper order books than Ethereum?

Yes, in CoinGecko’s 2026 comparison. Median BTC depth was $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side, versus $13–14 million for ETH in the report’s specified narrow ranges. Because the BTC and ETH bands were different, the ratio should not be treated as universal.

Which cryptocurrency has less slippage for a large trade?

BTC generally had lower and more stable slippage in TokenInsight’s tested spot orders. At $500,000, the report highlighted 0.005% median BTC slippage on MEXC and a 0.018% BTC P90 on Binance. Results still depend on venue, side, pair and current conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is trading volume a reliable liquidity comparison?

Not by itself. Volume records completed trades, while depth shows resting orders near the current price. Aggregated volume can combine exchanges, pairs and derivatives that cannot fill your specific spot order. Compare depth, spread and simulated slippage for the exact market instead.

Are spot and futures liquidity interchangeable?

No. Futures and perpetual books have different contracts, margin and funding mechanics. TokenInsight’s futures leader changed from MEXC at a 0.03% depth band to Bitget at 0.05%, showing why the market segment and measurement band must be stated.

How can I check liquidity immediately before trading?

Select the exact pair and venue, identify your order size and side, inspect the relevant bids or asks level by level, calculate the estimated average execution price, and account for spread and fees. Recheck immediately before submitting because displayed orders can disappear quickly.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Bitcoin showed deeper selected-exchange books, lower reported large-order slippage overall and tighter spot spreads than Ethereum. The practical winner for your trade still depends on the exact venue, pair, size, side, market segment and live order book.
