Bitcoin NFTs: Current Trends and How to Create One

Bitcoin NFTs usually mean Ordinal inscriptions: digital files such as images, text, audio, video, or HTML recorded in Bitcoin transaction data and associated with an individual satoshi. The market is still active, but it is far more selective and concentrated than during the 2023–2024 inscription boom. Beginners can use a no-code inscription service; advanced creators can run Bitcoin Core with ord for greater control.

What are Bitcoin NFTs?

A satoshi is the smallest unit of bitcoin: one bitcoin contains 100 million satoshis. Ordinal Theory gives individual satoshis a numbering and tracking system. An inscription attaches arbitrary data to a satoshi through Bitcoin transactions.

“Bitcoin NFT” is the clearest term for general readers, although the Ordinals project generally uses digital artifact. In practical terms, the three concepts are different:

Term Meaning
Ordinal The numbering and tracking system for individual satoshis.
Inscription Data inscribed into Bitcoin transaction data and associated with a satoshi.
Bitcoin NFT A reader-friendly description of a unique Bitcoin inscription or related collectible.

Ordinals documentation explains the underlying system in its official documentation and overview.

How Bitcoin inscriptions work

Inscription creation generally uses two transactions:

  1. Commit: a transaction creates a Taproot output that commits to the inscription script.
  2. Reveal: a second transaction spends that output and reveals the content.
  3. Assignment: under Ordinal tracking rules, the inscription is assigned to the first satoshi of the relevant input.

An inscription identifier commonly has the form TXIDiN, where N is the inscription’s output index. The protocol details are documented in the Ordinals inscription specification.

This differs from an Ethereum NFT in several important ways:

  • The primary content may be embedded directly in Bitcoin transaction witness data rather than stored at an external URL.
  • There is generally no ERC-721-style smart-contract token ID governing the asset.
  • Bitcoin’s base protocol does not automatically enforce marketplace royalties.
  • A wallet must understand inscriptions and satoshi selection, not merely ordinary BTC balances.

“On-chain” also needs careful interpretation. Check whether the artwork itself is inscribed, whether metadata and traits are on-chain, whether the inscription references an external URL, and whether the collection’s provenance can be independently verified. A permanent image does not automatically make an externally hosted collection description or trait database permanent.

Bitcoin NFT trends

The market has moved beyond the initial frenzy

Bitcoin NFT activity should not be described as an uninterrupted boom. CoinGecko’s 2025 reporting found a sharp decline in NFT and Ordinals marketplace activity, while 2026 ecosystem analysis describes a more mature and concentrated market. These sources use different datasets and definitions, so there is no single universal market-size figure.

The better conclusion is that Bitcoin NFTs are not simply “dead,” but the broad speculative wave has receded. Activity is concentrated in fewer collections, marketplaces, and committed collectors. Historical 2023 volume is not a reliable measure of current demand.

See the CoinGecko 2025 industry report, the BNB Chain research report, and Spark’s Ordinals and BRC-20 analysis for dated context.

Provenance and sat rarity matter more to collectors

Collectors may examine an inscription’s number, block and transaction history, sat rarity classification, exact satpoint, current ownership, transfer history, and parent-child relationships.

These features can support provenance, but they do not guarantee value. An early inscription number or rare satoshi creates no automatic demand, liquidity, or investment return. Rarity is partly a market convention, and price still depends on the collection, creator, community, and buyers.

BRC-20 and Runes are adjacent, not interchangeable

Bitcoin’s inscription ecosystem includes NFTs, fungible-token protocols, and experimental assets. BRC-20 uses JSON inscriptions to create a convention for fungible tokens. Runes is a separate fungible-token protocol designed partly in response to BRC-20’s efficiency and UTXO concerns.

They use related Bitcoin infrastructure, but neither should casually be called the same thing as a Bitcoin NFT. For a broader comparison, see CoinGecko’s Ordinals and Runes research.

No-code tools have lowered the technical barrier

Platforms such as Gamma allow creators to upload artwork, select fee preferences, connect a compatible wallet, and coordinate collection launches without operating a Bitcoin node. Gamma documents collection mints, pre-inscribed mints, and descending-price auctions in its creator guide.

The trade-off is less direct control over transaction construction, sat assignment, timing, fee strategy, and indexing. A launchpad is convenient, not a substitute for verifying the resulting inscription on-chain.

Infrastructure quality is part of the asset

A functioning Bitcoin NFT ecosystem depends on compatible wallets, indexers, explorers, marketplaces, and launchpads. A wallet that receives ordinary BTC may not safely recognize or preserve inscription-bearing satoshis. The official wallet guide explains why inscription-aware handling and sat control matter.

How to create a Bitcoin NFT without coding

For most artists and first-time creators, a no-code inscription service is the practical starting point.

  1. Prepare the file. Confirm its format, size, dimensions, and whether every element is suitable for permanent public storage. Inscribed content is not private.
  2. Use an inscription-compatible wallet. Do not assume a standard BTC wallet is sufficient.
  3. Back up the seed phrase offline. Never enter it into a website or give it to support.
  4. Separate funds. Keep inscription-bearing assets separate from ordinary spending BTC where possible.
  5. Fund the wallet. The required BTC depends on file size, Bitcoin’s fee rate, BTC’s price, and any service fee. Use the live quote rather than a fixed dollar estimate.
  6. Open the official service. Verify the domain before connecting the wallet.
  7. Upload the content and choose a fee priority. A higher fee may confirm sooner, but it costs more.
  8. Check the destination address carefully. Follow the wallet’s or service’s explicit inscription/collectibles instructions.
  9. Approve the transaction. Save the order ID, commit transaction ID, reveal transaction ID, and eventual inscription ID.
  10. Wait for the reveal. The interface may show a pending order before the reveal transaction confirms.
  11. Verify independently. Check the transaction and inscription in a Bitcoin or Ordinals explorer rather than relying only on a marketplace preview.
  12. Transfer or list it only after verification. Confirm that the wallet and marketplace identify the correct inscription.

If an inscription appears stuck, check whether the payment, commit, and reveal transactions exist. Do not submit a second inscription merely because an interface has not refreshed. If payment was made but no reveal transaction appears, contact the service through its official support channel. No legitimate support representative needs your seed phrase or private key.

How to inscribe with Bitcoin Core and ord

Self-hosting is for technically proficient users who want direct control and verification. The current Ordinals wallet guide requires Bitcoin Core 28 or newer, an indexed and fully synchronized Bitcoin Core node, and the ord utility. The guide specifies using bitcoind, not bitcoin-qt, for this workflow.

Prerequisites

  • Enough disk space, bandwidth, and time to synchronize Bitcoin Core.
  • Bitcoin Core 28 or newer.
  • ord installed and compatible with the chosen Bitcoin Core version.
  • A Bitcoin Core wallet and BTC for fees.
  • txindex=1.
  • The Bitcoin Core REST interface configured as required by the installed ord version.
  • Backups and a safe procedure for sat control.

Add this to the Bitcoin Core configuration:

txindex=1

Or start the daemon with:

bitcoind -txindex

Useful wallet commands

Obtain a receiving address:

ord wallet receive

Inspect transactions and outputs:

ord wallet transactions
ord wallet outputs

Inscribe a file:

ord wallet inscribe --fee-rate FEE_RATE --file FILE

The command returns commit and reveal transaction IDs and an inscription ID. After the reveal is mined:

ord wallet inscriptions

For a parent-child collection, the parent must already exist in the wallet:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ord wallet inscribe
  --fee-rate FEE_RATE
  --parent <PARENT_INSCRIPTION_ID>
  --file CHILD_FILE

The parent relationship cannot be added retroactively. Follow the official wallet guide for version-specific setup and command behavior.

File size and fees

Inscription data goes into transaction witness data. Larger files generally require more block space and higher fees. The official guide gives this rough estimate:

content size ÷ 4 × fee rate

This is an estimate, not a guaranteed invoice. Transaction overhead, changing fee rates, wallet behavior, and service charges can change the final amount. Bitcoin Core also will not relay inscription transactions above 400,000 weight units; the guide recommends keeping content below approximately 390,000 weight units for safety.

How to launch a collection

Decide which model you are creating:

  • 1/1 artwork: one unique inscription.
  • Edition: multiple copies of one work.
  • Generative collection: individually generated assets with defined traits.
  • Pre-inscribed collection: assets are inscribed before the public mint.
  • Reveal collection: a placeholder or commitment is minted first and metadata is revealed later.

Before minting, document the total supply, generation method, metadata model, provenance structure, mint price and currency, wallet limits, allowlist rules, refund policy, royalty terms, failed-mint handling, and what happens if a file is incorrect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be explicit about what is on-chain. If the artwork is inscribed but traits or descriptions are hosted externally, say so. Platform features and eligibility change, so check the live Gamma Ordinals portal and its current creator documentation.

How to sell or transfer a Bitcoin NFT

A typical marketplace sale works as follows:

  1. Connect an inscription-compatible wallet.
  2. Select the exact inscription.
  3. Create a listing or accept an offer.
  4. Approve a partially signed Bitcoin transaction, often called a PSBT, or the marketplace’s equivalent wallet request.
  5. Confirm the transaction and wait for settlement.
  6. Verify that the correct inscription and satoshi moved to the buyer.

PSBT-style transactions can let a seller approve a sale without giving private keys to the marketplace, but users still rely on the wallet, marketplace interface, indexer, and transaction-selection logic. Marketplace fees may apply, and royalties are generally platform- or agreement-dependent rather than guaranteed by Bitcoin’s base protocol.

Before using a platform, check its current supported inscription types, wallet compatibility, fees, and royalty policy. Magic Eden’s Ordinals marketplace and its Bitcoin Ordinals guide are examples of marketplace-specific resources, not universal guarantees of support.

Wallet safety and common mistakes

  • Use a wallet that explicitly supports Ordinals and inscriptions.
  • Keep inscription-bearing UTXOs separate from ordinary BTC when possible.
  • Do not send inscriptions to an exchange deposit address unless the exchange explicitly supports them.
  • Copy the address from the wallet’s inscription or collectibles flow rather than assuming every BTC address is interchangeable.
  • Never paste a seed phrase into a website.
  • Use a fresh wallet for experimental tools and test with a low-value transaction.
  • Confirm the exact inscription ID and satpoint before transferring.
  • Do not consolidate or sweep UTXOs without understanding which satoshis they contain.

If the wrong satoshi is spent, the inscription may be transferred unintentionally or the intended ownership relationship may be lost. If an asset is missing from a wallet, first locate the commit, reveal, and inscription transactions on-chain, then use only the wallet’s documented import or rescan process.

Bitcoin mainnet versus layer-2 NFTs

Not every asset marketed as a “Bitcoin NFT” is a Bitcoin mainnet inscription. Ask:

  • Is the asset directly inscribed on Bitcoin?
  • Is it issued on Stacks, a sidechain, or another layer?
  • Is the content stored on another chain with Bitcoin branding?
  • Is Bitcoin used only for settlement, bridging, or payment?

Bitcoin mainnet is strongest when direct Bitcoin provenance and Bitcoin-native settlement are central to the project. A layer-2 or alternative chain may be better for cheaper, faster, high-volume minting or richer application logic, but it has different security, bridge, custody, liquidity, and permanence assumptions.

Is creating a Bitcoin NFT worth it?

Choose Bitcoin mainnet when your priorities are Bitcoin-native provenance, direct inscription, and a collector audience that values satoshi-level history. A no-code service is usually the better route if you are an artist or beginner and can accept platform dependence.

Choose self-hosted ord when you need control over transaction construction, indexing, sat selection, and verification and are prepared to operate a node. Consider a layer-2 or alternative chain when low fees, high volume, complex logic, or deeper application functionality matter more than direct mainnet inscription.

In every case, evaluate the file size, live fee rate, wallet safety, provenance model, current buyers, recent—not merely historical—sales, bid and listing depth, marketplace support, and whether apparent volume is concentrated in a few wallets. Bitcoin status alone does not create liquidity or investment value.
