Bitcoin and ether are speculative assets with substantial price and operational risk. Bitcoin’s 30-day annualized volatility was approximately 37% on November 1, 2024, according to the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC); a comparable, same-date Ethereum figure is not established here. A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it cannot protect a seed phrase that is copied, photographed, or lost. Exchanges, wallet software, smart contracts, bridges, and even the user can fail. Bitcoin ATM scams alone caused more than $65 million in reported losses in the first six months of 2024, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
What are the short answers?
- Volatility: Both assets can move sharply and lose value quickly. Spot exchange-traded products provide price exposure; they do not remove the underlying market risk.
- Wallet safety: A hardware wallet keeps signing keys away from an internet-connected device during normal use, but self-custody transfers backup, verification, and recovery responsibility to you.
- Hacking: The Bitcoin and Ethereum protocols are different from the exchanges, apps, bridges, smart contracts, and devices used to access them. Most practical losses arise at those access points rather than from rewriting the entire blockchain.
- Lost access: Losing a device is usually recoverable if the correct recovery material remains available. Losing or exposing the seed phrase can make funds permanently inaccessible or permanently stealable.
- Scams: A request to send cryptocurrency to protect money, pay a fine, unlock an account, or help an investigation is a scam signal. Government agencies do not demand crypto transfers for those purposes.
- Legal status: U.S. treatment depends on the asset, transaction, offering, platform, and jurisdiction. The SEC and CFTC issued joint interpretive guidance in March 2026, so older blanket descriptions should not be treated as current legal advice.
How volatile are Bitcoin and Ethereum?
Bitcoin’s measured volatility
The FSOC reported approximately 37% 30-day annualized bitcoin volatility as of November 1, 2024. Annualized volatility is a statistical measure of how widely prices moved over a recent period; it is not a forecast of the next month’s return and does not mean bitcoin will rise or fall 37%. A single calm or turbulent month can change the figure materially.

The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin of September 9, 2024, warns that crypto-asset characteristics and the distributed-ledger technology used to issue or transfer them can vary significantly. That variation, combined with continuous global trading, leverage, concentrated holdings, thin liquidity in some markets, and changing sentiment, can produce rapid price gaps.

What is known about Ethereum’s volatility?
Ethereum’s volatility is also substantial, but no same-date Ethereum percentage is established by the primary material used for this article. Do not present Bitcoin’s 37% figure as an Ethereum measurement or as a permanent Bitcoin average. Investors comparing the two should use volatility data measured over the same dates, currency, venue, and methodology.

Why spot products do not make crypto conservative
A spot exchange-traded product can simplify market access by holding or tracking the underlying asset. It does not insure the price, prevent a drawdown, or eliminate risks from market structure, fees, tracking differences, custody, or trading interruptions. Exposure through a regulated account remains exposure to a volatile underlying asset.
Bitcoin and Ethereum compared
| Comparison | Bitcoin | Ethereum (ether) |
|---|---|---|
| Price volatility | Approximately 37% 30-day annualized volatility reported by FSOC on November 1, 2024; this is a dated observation, not a guarantee. | Substantial volatility is expected, but a comparable same-date primary-source percentage is not stated. |
| Network function | Primarily a peer-to-peer monetary network and settlement asset secured by proof-of-work mining. | A programmable blockchain used for ether transfers and applications such as smart contracts; the network is secured by proof-of-stake validators. |
| Liquidity | Deep global trading liquidity overall, with meaningful differences between venues, pairs, and periods of stress. | Deep global liquidity overall, also varying by venue, pair, and market conditions. |
| Custody workflow | Users protect private keys and confirm Bitcoin addresses and fees before broadcasting. | Users protect private keys, confirm Ethereum addresses and the selected network, and may need to review token approvals or contract interactions. |
| Fee behavior | Fees are selected in a competitive fee market and can rise when block space is scarce, affecting confirmation time. | Transaction fees (gas) vary with demand and computational complexity; contract activity can make a transaction much more expensive than a simple transfer. |
| Software and application exposure | Key-loss, phishing, exchange compromise, mining changes, and fee-market conditions are major user concerns. | All of those custody concerns apply, plus smart-contract bugs, bridge failures, client defects, validator outages, and incorrect network selection. |

Which wallet arrangement is safest?
No wallet is risk-free. “Wallet” software generally stores or uses the credentials that authorize a transaction; the coins remain recorded on a blockchain. The key question is who controls those credentials and how exposed they are to theft, loss, or mistakes.
Custodial exchange account
An exchange holds the signing keys while you access an account with a password, authenticator, or other login. This can be convenient and may provide account-recovery procedures, but you depend on the company’s solvency, security controls, withdrawal policies, and identity systems. CFTC customer guidance lists weak platform safeguards, hacking, phishing, manipulation, volatile swings, and the possible lack of recourse after theft. Its warning is stark: There is no assurance of recourse if your virtual currency is stolen.
Hot wallet
A hot wallet is an application or browser-connected device that can sign transactions online. It is convenient for smaller balances and frequent use, but malware, fake applications, phishing pages, clipboard replacement, malicious browser extensions, and a compromised phone or computer can expose keys or approve a transaction.
Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a dedicated physical device designed to keep private keys isolated from an internet-connected computer or phone. The device can reduce remote attack surface because a transaction is signed on the device rather than by handing the key to the host computer. It does not make a dishonest address, fraudulent approval, weak recovery backup, or physical theft harmless. A counterfeit device, tampered setup, malicious firmware, or an exposed recovery phrase can defeat the benefit.

|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange | Login-based access and possible account support | Platform security, withdrawal controls, account compromise, and counterparty failure |

How to use a hardware wallet without creating a new risk
- Buy through a trustworthy channel and inspect packaging. Do not accept a device that arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase, a pre-set PIN, or instructions to email the phrase. A genuine setup generates recovery material during initialization.
- Update only through the manufacturer’s verified software. Confirm the application and download source before connecting the device. Ignore unsolicited update links in email, social media, or support chats.
- Generate the recovery phrase on the device. Write it on a durable offline medium and check every word. Never store it in cloud notes, email, a password manager intended for ordinary logins, a screenshot, or a phone photo.
- Test the backup before depositing a large balance. Follow the device’s official recovery-check procedure. A phrase that was copied incorrectly will not restore the intended account.
- Protect the phrase separately from the device. Anyone who obtains the phrase can generally recreate the wallet without the device. Anyone who finds the device but lacks the phrase still faces the PIN and device protections, but those are not substitutes for a secure backup.
- Verify the destination on the device screen. Malware can replace an address displayed on a computer. Compare the complete address, or at least a carefully checked beginning and ending, on the hardware screen before approving.
- Send a small test transaction first. Confirm the receiving network, address, amount, and fee. For Ethereum, check whether the destination is an exchange deposit address, a contract, or another network supported by the recipient.
- Use separate accounts for different purposes. Keeping long-term savings apart from a wallet used for applications limits the damage from a malicious approval or compromised website.
Hardware wallets reduce one category of risk; they do not guarantee recovery, insure value, or prevent an owner from signing an irreversible transaction.
Can Bitcoin or Ethereum be hacked?
Protocol versus access point
“Hacked” can mean several different events. A direct rewrite of a mature blockchain’s history is not the same as an exchange breach, a stolen seed phrase, a fraudulent smart-contract approval, or a user sending funds to the wrong address. The practical defenses differ, so identify the layer that failed.
Bitcoin failure modes
- Private-key loss or theft makes coins unspendable or transfers control to the thief.
- Phishing and fake wallet software can capture credentials or redirect an address.
- An exchange or other custodian can be compromised, freeze withdrawals, or fail operationally.
- Mining conditions and fee-market changes can affect confirmation speed and transaction cost. A low fee may leave a payment waiting while demand is high.
Ethereum failure modes
- Smart-contract bugs can lock, misroute, or drain assets after a user grants permission.
- Bridges that connect networks can fail in their contracts, validators, or message-signing systems.
- Wallet-client defects, validator outages, or network congestion can delay activity.
- Choosing the wrong network or sending a token to an incompatible address can make recovery difficult or impossible.
These are plausible technical and operational failure modes, not a claim that every listed event is occurring at a measured rate. Treat application interactions as higher risk than a simple transfer because a contract call can authorize more than the amount visible in a single transaction.
What happens if you lose a wallet or seed phrase?
Losing the physical device
If the device is lost or broken but the correct recovery phrase is secure, you can normally restore the wallet on a compatible replacement device or wallet implementation. Restore privately, verify the addresses, and change the setup if you suspect the old device or phrase was exposed.
Losing the recovery phrase
If no usable backup exists, there is generally no central “forgot password” process for a self-custodied wallet. A PIN reset, replacement device, or support ticket cannot recreate a missing phrase. Funds may remain visible on-chain but become permanently unspendable.

Exposing the recovery phrase
Assume the wallet is compromised if the phrase was typed into a website, shared with support, photographed, stored in a synced service, or seen by another person. Move assets to a newly generated wallet using a clean device, then revoke approvals and investigate the source of exposure. Do not wait for a visible theft; automated attackers can act quickly.

Impersonation patterns
The FTC says Bitcoin ATM scams commonly use government, business, and technical-support impersonation. The caller or message creates urgency: an alleged arrest warrant, a compromised bank account, a package problem, a computer infection, or an account that must be “protected.” The victim is directed to a Bitcoin ATM, told to deposit cash, and instructed to scan a QR code or send the resulting cryptocurrency to the scammer.
In the first six months of 2024, reported Bitcoin ATM scam losses exceeded $65 million, and the median reported loss was $10,000, according to the FTC. People over 60 were more than three times as likely as younger adults to report a loss. The figures reflect reported complaints, so they do not measure every incident.
Rules that stop the common script
- Legitimate agencies do not demand cryptocurrency to protect funds, pay fines, prevent arrest, or unlock an account.
- Do not trust a phone number, caller ID, QR code, or website supplied by the person who contacted you. End the contact and find the organization’s number independently.
- Never share a seed phrase, one-time code, password, or remote-control session with “support.”
- Do not allow a stranger to coach you through an ATM, wallet installation, or screen-sharing session.
- Pause when a message insists on secrecy, immediate payment, or a specific ATM location.
If money was already sent
Stop communication and do not send an additional “recovery” payment. Preserve wallet addresses, transaction IDs, ATM receipts, phone numbers, messages, and screenshots. Contact the ATM operator and the financial institution that supplied the cash as soon as possible, then report the incident to the FTC and appropriate law-enforcement authorities. Blockchain transfers are generally difficult to reverse, but prompt records can support an investigation.

How large is the wider cybercrime risk?
A 2025 CFTC filing citing FBI data said 2024 cybercrime totaled $16.6 billion, with 56% involving cryptocurrency and $9.3 billion in crypto-related losses. Those figures cover reported cybercrime broadly, not a probability that any individual holder will be attacked. They illustrate why custody, phishing resistance, and incident response matter as much as market analysis.
Are Bitcoin and Ethereum securities or commodities?
There is no single answer that applies to every transaction. U.S. legal characterization can turn on the asset’s design, the way it is offered or sold, the promises made to purchasers, the intermediary, and the jurisdiction. The SEC and CFTC issued joint interpretive guidance in March 2026, but that does not replace an analysis of a specific product or activity.
Do not infer that a token’s label, a trading venue, or a spot product settles the question for lending, staking, derivatives, fundraising, or another service. Regulatory categories can affect registration, disclosures, custody rules, market access, and investor protections. Check current SEC and CFTC materials and obtain qualified legal advice for a business or significant transaction; this explanation is not a legal classification.
What risk controls should an ordinary holder use?
- Limit the amount to money you can afford to lose; volatility can overwhelm a long-term plan.
- Keep trading funds separate from long-term holdings and avoid unnecessary leverage.
- Use unique passwords, multifactor authentication, withdrawal allowlists where available, and a dedicated email for financial accounts.
- Check the exact network, address, amount, and fee before every transfer; make a small test transfer for a new destination.
- Keep recovery material offline, make a tested backup, and never disclose it to support staff or relatives who do not need it.
- Review application permissions and token approvals periodically, especially after using unfamiliar Ethereum applications.
- Record transaction IDs and tax-relevant information while access is available.
- Assume every urgent demand for crypto is fraudulent until independently verified.
The central trade-off is straightforward: custody by a platform may offer convenience and account procedures but adds counterparty dependence; self-custody can reduce that dependence but makes mistakes, theft, and backup failures your responsibility.
