Originally published May 19, 2025: The Memorial Day prices below are historical deals and should not be treated as current offers. The roundup featured promotions from both Amazon and Best Buy—not Best Buy exclusively—with the strongest headline prices including the Wi‑Fi iPad mini 7 at $399 and USB‑C AirPods Max at $479.99.
The original sale roundup was published one week before Memorial Day 2025, which fell on May 26. Its prices were time-sensitive and may have expired shortly afterward. Retailer, condition, storage, and color mattered, particularly for Best Buy’s open-box inventory.

The 128GB Wi‑Fi iPad mini was the clearest headline bargain. It received the same nominal $100 discount as the 256GB and 512GB versions while offering the lowest upfront price. For reading, streaming, browsing, note-taking, and ordinary app use, it was the most economical configuration.

With iPadOS, run multiple apps at once, use Apple Pencil to write in any text field with Scribble, and edit and share photos. iPad mini comes with essential apps like Safari, Messages, and Keynote, with over a million more apps available on the App Store.
The 256GB model at $499 was the more practical long-term choice for people who expected to keep games, downloaded video, photos, or creative projects on the tablet. The 512GB model at $699 made sense primarily for buyers with large local media or creative libraries; it was not automatically the best value simply because it was discounted.
The iPad mini 7 uses Apple’s A17 Pro chip, has an 8.3-inch display, supports Apple Pencil Pro, and is listed by Apple as supporting Apple Intelligence. See Apple’s iPad mini specifications for feature and compatibility details. Apple Intelligence availability can depend on software version, language, region, and device requirements.
Choose Wi‑Fi if you usually have dependable wireless internet or can use an iPhone hotspot. Cellular models offer more flexibility but cost more and may require a carrier plan. The 2025 roundup did not establish that Wi‑Fi + Cellular models received the same $100 discount.

- Renewed products look and work like new. These pre-owned products have been inspected and tested by Amazon-qualified suppliers, which typically perform a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, and a thorough cleaning process. Packaging and accessories may be generic. All products on Amazon Renewed come with a minimum 90-day supplier-backed warranty.
One important correction: the source text included “1256GB” in one place. The middle configuration was 256GB.
AirPods Max: new versus open-box
The new USB‑C AirPods Max price of $479.99 was about $69 below the cited $549 list price. Best Buy’s “Excellent” open-box listings ranged from roughly $419 to $446 depending on color, producing the larger nominal discount.
Open-box was potentially worthwhile when the saving was substantial, but the condition label described the retailer’s grading rather than independent testing. Before buying, confirm the exact listing’s accessories, cosmetic condition, return deadline, battery condition information, seller, and warranty terms. The original article said the relevant “Excellent” listings were intended to work and look like new and included a one-year Apple warranty; do not assume that every open-box unit has those terms.

- 7.9-Inch Retina Display with True Tone and Wide Color - A12 Bionic Chip
- 8MP Back Camera, 7MP FaceTime HD Front Camera - Stereo Speakers
- 802.11AC Wi-Fi - Lightning Connector for Charging and Accessories
- Up to 10 Hours of Battery Life/Charge - Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor
- IOS 12 with Group FaceTime, Shared Augmented Reality Experiences, and Screen Time
There is also a major date distinction. Apple’s current AirPods page now identifies AirPods Max 2 as the current product in 2026. Therefore, the 2025 USB‑C model should not be described today as Apple’s latest AirPods Max. Buyers comparing prices now need to distinguish the older USB‑C model from AirPods Max 2.

The iPad Pro deal was better for a different buyer
The 13-inch M4 iPad Pro fell to $1,099 new, compared with the cited $1,299 price. Best Buy’s “Excellent” open-box price of $1,015.99 represented a $283 reduction from that comparison price.
This was not a direct substitute for the iPad mini. The iPad Pro’s large screen is better suited to multitasking, keyboard use, and high-end creative work; the mini is designed around portability. The open-box Pro was attractive only if the individual listing had the correct storage and finish, included the expected accessories, and offered acceptable return and warranty protection.

- Display: Features a 7.9-inch Retina display with 2048 x 1536 resolution for crisp, vivid visuals.
- Processor: Powered by an Apple A8 chip for fast performance and smooth multitasking.
- Camera: Includes an 8MP rear camera and 1.2MP front camera for capturing photos and videos.
- Memory: Comes with 128GB of storage for storing apps, photos, videos, and more.
- Connectivity: Supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for connecting to devices and the internet.
For casual reading, streaming, and note-taking, the Pro’s premium may be difficult to justify. For professional workflows, a large display, or demanding creative applications, the additional cost may be easier to defend.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWas this actually a Best Buy sale?
Only partly. The headline emphasized Best Buy, but the most prominent new-product prices—the iPad mini, new AirPods Max, and new iPad Pro—were reported at Amazon. Best Buy’s clearest role was its open-box AirPods Max and iPad Pro inventory, along with the broader Memorial Day promotion linked from the roundup.

That retailer distinction matters for shipping, returns, membership requirements, warranty handling, and whether an item is sold directly by the retailer or by a marketplace seller. Current inventory can be checked through Best Buy’s iPad mini listings and Best Buy’s AirPods Max listings.
New or open-box: which should you choose?
New is usually the safer choice when the price difference is modest, the product is a gift, battery condition matters, or the return and warranty terms are unclear. Open-box can make sense when the discount is meaningful and the listing clearly specifies condition, included accessories, return rights, and warranty coverage.
For electronics with batteries—especially headphones—an open-box discount should compensate you for greater uncertainty. Inspect the package promptly, verify every accessory, test charging and pairing, and keep the receipt until the return period has ended.

Buyer checklist for any similar Apple sale
- Confirm the generation, chip, storage, color, and screen size.
- Check whether the iPad is Wi‑Fi or Wi‑Fi + Cellular.
- Separate new, refurbished, and open-box prices.
- Confirm who sells and fulfills the item.
- Read the exact warranty and return terms for that listing.
- Check the final cart price, tax, shipping, and pickup availability.
- For unusually short-lived deals, save a screenshot and receipt.
Bottom line
In the May 2025 snapshot, the $399 128GB Wi‑Fi iPad mini was the strongest straightforward value, while the $499 256GB version was the better capacity choice for many long-term users. The $479.99 new AirPods Max price was a solid discount at the time, but the $419–$446 open-box listings required careful inspection of condition and coverage. The iPad Pro discount was substantial but targeted a different, productivity-focused buyer.
Those conclusions apply to the reported 2025 prices only. By 2026, Apple’s AirPods lineup had moved to AirPods Max 2, and later Memorial Day promotions used different products and prices, as shown by 2026 Memorial Day deal coverage.
