Bench Accounting did shut down—but not permanently. The Vancouver-based online bookkeeping company made its platform inaccessible on December 27, 2024. Employer.com announced three days later that it had acquired Bench, and Bench says service resumed in January 2025.
That rescue did not restore the old business unchanged. Ownership, staffing, customer relationships and possibly pricing shifted, while Employer.com later confirmed layoffs. Former customers should treat Bench as an operating service with a serious continuity history—not as if the December outage never happened.

The short answer
Bench suspended operations on December 27, 2024, leaving customers worried about access to bookkeeping records, financial statements and tax documents at the start of tax season. On December 30, Employer.com announced that it had acquired Bench for an undisclosed price. According to Bench’s current FAQ, the service resumed in January 2025.
Employer.com said customers would be able to continue using Bench, access their data or move that data to another provider. Those assurances should not be confused with uninterrupted service or a guarantee that every customer retained the same bookkeeper, contract, price or level of support.

What happened to Bench: a precise timeline
- December 27, 2024: Bench announced that its platform would no longer be accessible and abruptly suspended operations. Customers reported losing access to accounting records and tax-related documents.
- December 30, 2024: Employer.com announced its acquisition of Bench. The purchase price was not disclosed.
- January 2025: Bench says it resumed service under Employer.com ownership.
- April 15, 2025: Employer.com later cited customer churn following the tax deadline when explaining the economics of the revived business.
- May 2025: Employer.com confirmed layoffs at Bench, saying legacy pricing and servicing decisions had left some customer accounts unprofitable.
The sequence matters. “Bench shut down” accurately describes the December event; “Bench is permanently closed” does not describe the company’s subsequent history.
Who acquired Bench?
Employer.com acquired Bench Accounting. Employer.com is a U.S. workforce-management and HR-technology company led by Jesse Tinsley, with products and services focused on areas such as payroll, onboarding and recruiting rather than online bookkeeping.
The acquisition price was never disclosed in the available announcements. There is also no basis here to assume that Employer.com acquired every former corporate obligation, contract or liability. The defensible statement is that Employer.com acquired Bench and continued the Bench business under its ownership.

Bench’s timing turned an operational failure into an immediate financial-records crisis. Many small businesses use year-end books to prepare tax returns, calculate estimated payments, review profitability and provide records to lenders or investors. A sudden loss of portal access can therefore affect more than routine bookkeeping.
At the time, customers were concerned about financial statements, transaction histories and tax documents. Bench’s earlier messaging directed customers toward filing a six-month IRS extension while they sought another bookkeeper. Employer.com later said customers who stayed with the revived Bench service would not need to follow that recommendation solely because of the shutdown. That was conditional guidance, not a universal replacement for tax advice: an extension generally concerns filing time and does not automatically extend the time to pay taxes.

A customer whose account became inaccessible still had to determine whether the books were complete, whether tax work had actually been filed and whether payment obligations remained. Those questions cannot be answered merely by restoring a login.
What the acquisition changed for customers
Employer.com presented the acquisition as a way to restore the Bench platform and preserve customer choice. Customers were told they could:
- Continue using Bench under new ownership.
- Regain access to their data.
- Port their data to another provider.
- Continue working with Bench’s in-house bookkeeping personnel, where staffing allowed.
Those options address the broad customer problem, but they do not establish identical outcomes for every account. Keep these issues separate:
- Historical reports: Balance sheets and profit-and-loss statements may be available even when underlying detail is incomplete.
- Transaction-level records: A complete general ledger, bank-feed history, attachments and reconciliations matter when another professional must review or rebuild the books.
- Year-end completion: A portal can be active while 2024 books still require cleanup or review.
- Tax preparation: Bookkeeping and a tax-ready package are not the same as a filed tax return.
- Commercial terms: A prepaid plan, legacy price or unused service period may not map neatly onto post-acquisition arrangements.
- Personnel: The same individual bookkeeper may not remain assigned.
Bench’s statements about data availability, safety and continuing service are company claims, not an independent audit of every customer’s records or the platform’s future resilience.
How many customers and employees were affected?
The available figures do not line up neatly. Bench’s public marketing had cited more than 35,000 U.S. business owners, while Employer.com told TechCrunch after the shutdown that Bench had approximately 12,000 customers. The two numbers are not directly reconciled. They may reflect different definitions—such as historical users versus active customers—but that explanation is only a possibility, not an established fact.

Bench’s website had listed a workforce of more than 600 employees. After the shutdown, Employer.com said it was calling back “many,” but not all, employees to support continuity. Employer.com then confirmed further layoffs in May 2025. The company attributed the reductions partly to customer churn and to legacy pricing and servicing decisions that made some accounts unprofitable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Why did Bench fail?
The available reporting supports a story of financial distress rather than one officially confirmed single cause. TechCrunch reported, based on company filings and related reporting, that Bench had raised more than $110 million in venture funding, accumulated more than $50 million in debt and burned approximately $135 million before shutting down.
The company’s largest lender, the National Bank of Canada, reportedly made more than $40 million in loans available in June 2024. A funding and forbearance agreement was signed on December 12, 2024—just 13 days before the shutdown. These facts point to a company attempting to manage a serious financing and liquidity problem, but they do not by themselves prove which decision caused the collapse.
Several pressures likely formed part of the reported financial picture:

- Human bookkeeping is labor-intensive and costly to deliver.
- Venture-backed growth can require customer acquisition and expansion before profitability.
- Prices may not cover the cost of servicing every account, particularly accounts requiring cleanup or extensive support.
- Debt obligations can sharply reduce a company’s room to absorb losses.
- Leadership changed shortly before the shutdown: Adam Schlesinger became CEO in November 2024.
- The company faced the difficult combination of year-end workload, tax-season expectations and a business model that had not reached profitability.
Bench had raised money from investors including Shopify, Bain Capital Ventures and Inovia Capital. TechCrunch reported that Schlesinger said he had been placed in the role by Inovia and took the company through a process to seek an acquisition. Former employees criticized management and board decisions in reporting about the collapse, but those criticisms should remain attributed rather than presented as proven causation.
Is Bench operating now?
As of the latest official information available for this article, Bench says it is operating as an Employer.com company and remains available to new and returning customers. Its pricing page, checked August 16, 2026, advertises these starting prices:
| Offering | Advertised starting price |
|---|---|
| Bookkeeping Grow | $199 per month when billed monthly |
| Bookkeeping Core | $399 per month |
| Bookkeeping Core + Tax | $599 per month |
| QuickBooks-certified bookkeeper | $55 per hour, plus a $1,200 onboarding fee |
Bench advertises annual billing savings of up to 20%, but prices can vary with business complexity and eligibility. The company says its service includes dedicated bookkeeping personnel, monthly bookkeeping, reconciliations, categorized transactions, financial statements and year-end tax-ready packages. Its tax-inclusive offering covers business income-tax filing and advisory for eligible entity types.
These are Bench’s current commercial claims, not independently audited performance measures. Before signing up, ask exactly what is included for your entity type, whether catch-up work costs extra, who files the return, how records can be exported and what happens if the assigned team changes.

What former Bench customers should do
- Log in and test access. Do not assume that a working password means the account is complete.
- Download independent copies. Save balance sheets, profit-and-loss statements, general ledgers, transaction exports, bank reconciliations, tax packages, receipts, invoices and supporting attachments.
- Check 2024 completion. Identify unreconciled accounts, uncategorized transactions, missing statements and open bookkeeping periods.
- Confirm tax responsibility in writing. Ask whether Bench prepared, will prepare or merely made books ready for a tax return. Confirm the applicable filing deadlines and payment obligations with a qualified tax professional.
- Review prepaid services. Ask whether unused months, unfinished work or tax services qualify for a credit or refund under your agreement.
- Confirm staffing and support. Get the assigned team’s name, expected response time and escalation path.
- Review current terms. Pay attention to pricing, cancellation, privacy, data-processing and export provisions.
- Get an outside review when the books matter. A CPA, enrolled agent or experienced bookkeeper can check whether the records are usable before a filing or financing decision.
- Keep your own backup. Do not make a single portal your only copy of tax-critical records.
Should you stay with Bench or switch?
Staying may reduce migration work if your historical data is intact, your books are current and the service meets your needs. Bench also continues to offer a human-bookkeeping model and monthly financial statements.

- Bookkeeping scope versus tax-return preparation.
- Cleanup pricing, cancellation terms and refund policies.
- Response-time commitments and escalation procedures.

Alternatives by business model
- QuickBooks Online: A software-first option for owners who want to manage the books themselves or hire a compatible bookkeeper.
- Pilot: A human bookkeeping and tax-oriented service to evaluate for startups and small businesses. Compare its scope, migration process, tax coverage and service commitments.
- Xero: Cloud accounting software with an accountant and bookkeeper partner ecosystem, useful for software-led workflows.
- Local CPA or bookkeeping firm: Often a better fit for complex tax, industry-specific accounting, multi-state operations or audit preparation.
- In-house bookkeeper: May fit a business with enough transaction volume to justify an employee and the controls needed for documented backups.
No provider is risk-free. The most important safeguard is maintaining control of complete, usable records rather than relying solely on a subscription company’s dashboard.
The bottom line
Bench was abruptly shut down on December 27, 2024, acquired by Employer.com on December 30 and revived in January 2025. It is not accurate to call Bench permanently closed, but it is equally inaccurate to describe the acquisition as a seamless continuation of the old company. Later layoffs, customer churn and unresolved differences in reported customer counts show that the rescue changed the business.
