Bank of America added 1,000 outside contractors in the second quarter of 2026 to help patch software vulnerabilities identified with Anthropic’s Mythos, according to reporting disclosed October 14. They joined about 3,000 employees already working on patches to the bank’s own systems and vendor-supplied software.
The episode shows the operational trade-off of AI-assisted security: a model can accelerate vulnerability discovery, but people still have to verify findings, engineer fixes, test them and deploy changes without disrupting a major bank.

What Bank of America disclosed
Chief executive Brian Moynihan said the contractor expansion was still in place when he discussed the effort on October 14, 2026. Quartz reproduced his statement:

State of AI reported that the bank had been paying the outside contractors during the six months before the disclosure. The work covered proprietary Bank of America code as well as software obtained from vendors, so the staffing figure describes a broad remediation operation rather than a team working only on one application or one AI product.

The spending figures should not be merged. More than $100 million was reported for fixing AI-discovered vulnerabilities, while the larger “couple hundred million plus” description combines remediation with anti-money-laundering work. The available reporting therefore does not support treating the entire larger amount as the price of Mythos remediation.

What Anthropic’s Mythos is reported to do
The reports describe Mythos as an advanced cybersecurity model that can search for and exploit previously unknown software vulnerabilities. Anthropic claimed, in context reported by The Atlantic, that Mythos could “surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities.” That is Anthropic’s capability claim, not an independently published performance result for Bank of America’s deployment.

Why finding flaws faster created a hiring surge
Discovery and remediation are different workloads
Automated discovery can produce findings much faster than a conventional team can process them. Each credible finding can require code review, reproduction of the issue, risk classification, a patch, peer review, regression testing, documentation and a controlled release. Vendor software may add coordination with the supplier and a wait for an upstream fix.
Bank systems cannot be patched casually
A large bank has to protect availability, transaction integrity and regulatory controls while changing production software. A patch that fixes one weakness can create a new defect or interfere with another system. That makes testing and staged deployment part of the security work, not optional administration.

Contractors expanded capacity quickly
Using outside specialists allowed Bank of America to add people during the remediation push without suggesting that the bank had permanently replaced its security organization. The contractors worked alongside the established employee group, which retained responsibility for the bank’s systems and release decisions.
Does this mean AI replaces security engineers?
This case points to task substitution rather than wholesale replacement. Mythos may automate portions of vulnerability research and exploitation analysis, but the resulting queue increased demand for people who can validate findings, understand business-critical dependencies, write safe patches and operate release controls.

AI can therefore change the mix of security labor. Fewer hours may be needed for some forms of manual searching, while more capacity is needed for triage, remediation engineering, testing and governance. The Bank of America staffing decision is evidence of that pattern in one reported deployment, not proof that every organization will need the same ratio of contractors to employees.
What the reported costs do—and do not—tell us
The reported dollar figures establish that the remediation effort was financially material. They do not provide a complete per-vulnerability cost, a price for Mythos itself, or a clean separation between labor, tooling, vendor fixes and other remediation expenses. Nor do they show that customers were charged a separate fee or that account balances were affected.
For investors and risk professionals, the important distinction is between a security discovery expense and a broader control-remediation budget. Anti-money-laundering work was included in the larger quarterly description, so using that number to estimate the cost of AI-generated findings would overstate what the available evidence supports.

What remains unknown
- The number of Mythos findings that Bank of America confirmed as exploitable in production.
- How many findings involved the bank’s own code versus vendor software.
- The average time from discovery to patch deployment.
- How the more-than-$100-million figure was divided among employees, contractors, vendors and other remediation costs.
- Whether the contractor group will remain after the current remediation backlog is cleared.
Why the episode matters beyond one bank
The event illustrates a capacity problem that other enterprises may face as security models improve: the bottleneck can move from finding weaknesses to fixing them safely. Any comparison with another deployment should examine who supplied the model, whether findings received independent triage, whether internal and vendor code were both included, how contractor capacity compared with employee capacity, how long patching took, and whether reported costs combined security work with compliance or regulatory programs.
For now, the clearest conclusion is narrow but significant: AI-assisted vulnerability discovery did not eliminate Bank of America’s need for security professionals. It helped expose enough remediation work that the bank added a large temporary workforce to its existing patching operation.
