This is not a new Apple-billing mandate for every creator: Patreon says about 4% of creators remain on the legacy models. Creators already using subscription billing do not need to migrate for this requirement.
What Apple is requiring Patreon to change
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines generally require apps to use Apple In-App Purchase (IAP) when users buy digital content, subscriptions or functionality inside an iOS app. The rules include regional exceptions and different treatment for physical goods and services consumed outside the app; the published guidelines are at Apple’s App Review Guidelines.

Patreon says Apple’s IAP system supports its recurring subscription-billing model, but not Patreon’s older first-of-the-month and per-creation models. Consequently, affected creators must convert to Patreon subscription billing so qualifying iOS purchases can run through IAP. Patreon—not Apple—has described the broader consequence as a risk that unsupported billing could lead to removal of the Patreon app from the App Store; Apple has not published a specific Patreon takedown date.

Patreon first explained the requirement on August 12, 2024, saying Apple wanted iOS purchases moved to IAP beginning in November 2024. Read the original explanation at Patreon’s announcement.

Patreon’s January 2026 notice says approximately 4% of creators still use legacy billing. To check your model, open Patreon’s Billing and payouts settings. Monthly legacy-billing creators can select Get started. Per-creation creators should request individual assistance.
What happens to fees and prices?
For eligible purchases made through Apple IAP, Apple’s standard commission is generally 30%. Apple’s rate can fall to 15% after a subscriber has completed more than one year of continuous paid service, subject to applicable terms and programs; Apple’s contractual language is in Schedule 2 and 3. Patreon says it began applying the applicable rates to new memberships in April 2026.

These are separate from Patreon’s own platform fee. Patreon says it does not add a separate payment-processing fee to iOS transactions, but the platform fee still applies. The Apple commission does not apply to every Patreon payment: purchase route, storefront, subscription age and regional rules matter.

- Raise the iOS price: Patreon’s default option, intended to keep earnings closer to other sales channels.
- Keep one price everywhere: The creator absorbs Apple’s commission and receives less from those IAP sales.
Tell patrons whether an Apple-mediated price differs from the regular Patreon tier price. Existing memberships are not automatically repriced or charged the Apple fee merely because a member accesses Patreon on an iPhone or iPad, according to Patreon’s FAQ.

U.S. and international fans have different checkout options

Apple announced U.S.-specific guideline changes on May 1, 2025, following a U.S. court decision: Apple’s announcement. The U.S. web option is not a worldwide workaround.
What migration changes operationally
- Identify the billing model. Record whether each page uses subscription, first-of-the-month or per-creation billing, along with tier prices and charge dates.
- Plan the customer impact. Subscription billing changes when patrons are charged compared with first-of-the-month or per-creation schedules. Explain any altered dates, benefits or prices before switching.
- Choose a price strategy. Decide whether Apple-facing prices should be higher or identical to prices elsewhere, and model the effect of Apple’s commission plus Patreon’s platform fee.
- Start the conversion. For monthly legacy billing, use Billing and payouts settings → Get started. Per-creation creators should contact Patreon Product Support before September 30, 2026.
- Complete it before the cutoff. Finish by October 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Patreon describes the migration as a one-time change that cannot be reversed.
Patreon’s FAQ says it may automatically transition accounts that do not migrate, so leaving the page untouched is not a reliable way to preserve the old model.

What happens if a creator does nothing?
Patreon says a creator can remain active for existing fans, but memberships may no longer be purchasable through the iOS app for international fans. The company also says unsupported billing models could put the availability of the Patreon iOS app at risk. That is a stated risk, not a publicly announced Apple removal order for a particular date.
What the headline gets wrong
- This is not a blanket conversion of every Patreon creator to Apple billing; the immediate requirement targets the minority still using legacy billing.
- The active deadline is in 2026, not the historical November 2024 or November 2025 dates.
- Creators are moving to Patreon’s subscription billing model so Apple IAP can process required iOS purchases; they are not independently adopting Apple as their entire payment platform.
- “Apple takes 30% from Patreon” is too broad. The rate depends on route, storefront and subscription duration, and existing memberships are treated differently.
- U.S. web checkout does not give international iOS users the same option.
Creator checklist
- Check every page’s billing model now.
- Export or document tier prices, billing cadence and patron benefits.
- Contact Patreon before September 30 if you use per-creation billing or have unusual requirements.
- Decide whether to offset IAP costs with higher iOS pricing.
- Notify patrons about billing-date and price changes.
- Complete the irreversible migration before October 31 at 11:59 p.m. PT.
The Bottom Line
Patreon’s current Apple mandate is narrower than the original headline suggested: creators still using first-of-the-month or per-creation billing must permanently move to subscription billing by October 31, 2026. U.S. fans may have a web-checkout alternative, while international iOS purchases generally remain subject to Apple IAP and its applicable commission.
