Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo has triggered bullish analyst forecasts, but the often-cited production figure of nearly 10 million units is an unconfirmed supply-chain report. At the same time, reported iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max production cuts have conflicting explanations: one account cites soft demand, while JPMorgan calls them normal adjustments.
What Apple launched and when
Apple unveiled the foldable iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. The company says it has the largest display ever put in an iPhone. The Associated Press describes a 7.6-inch unfolded screen, Apple Pencil support and split-screen use. Apple CEO John Ternus said the Duo “will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone.”

The Duo starts at $1,999 and becomes available October 23, 2026. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Apple opened Pro-model preorders September 12, with availability beginning September 18. The Pro Max carries Apple’s claim of up to 45 hours of video playback.
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, described the Duo as a distinctive addition to the iPhone range and Apple’s entry into the niche foldable category. Wood said foldables represented less than 5% of the overall smartphone market; that is a market estimate attributed to him and reported by the AP, not an Apple statistic.

How many Duo units might Apple make?
A report from China’s Securities Times, relayed by 9to5Mac, said Apple increased Duo orders by 30%, potentially bringing production for the remainder of 2026 close to 10 million units. Apple has not confirmed that figure, so it should be treated as a reported production estimate rather than company guidance or evidence of units sold.
JPMorgan’s separate forecast is narrower and tied to a specific period: about 8.5 million Duo units in the December quarter. Oppenheimer was reported as estimating 8 million to 10 million units of Duo supply for the year. These numbers are not directly interchangeable: one refers to a reported remainder-of-year production possibility, one to a quarterly forecast and one to annual supply. None establishes final consumer demand.
| Estimate | Scope | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Nearly 10 million | Remainder of 2026 production possibility | Secondary report from China’s Securities Times, relayed by 9to5Mac; not confirmed by Apple |
| 8.5 million | December quarter | JPMorgan forecast |
| 8–10 million | 2026 Duo supply estimate | Oppenheimer estimate reported in an analyst roundup |
The reports suggest Apple is preparing meaningful first-generation volume, but they do not prove that the company will sell 10 million phones or that every region will receive equal inventory. Foldables’ small overall market share also makes the Duo’s eventual growth rate uncertain.

Why analysts raised Apple price targets
JPMorgan raised its Apple price target from $340 to $360 and retained an Overweight rating. Its reasoning was not simply that the Duo exists. The firm expects the staggered launch, including the absence of the regular iPhone 18 during the initial Pro cycle, to make Duo sales an offsetting source of revenue. JPMorgan forecast roughly a 2% year-over-year decline in iPhone revenue but about 2% growth in total Apple revenue for the December quarter.
Other analysts remained constructive with different assumptions:
- Citi retained a Buy rating with a $365 target.
- Goldman Sachs remained constructive, highlighting $100 price increases for Pro models and the availability of a 2TB tier.
- Oppenheimer retained a Perform rating while estimating 8–10 million units of Duo supply this year.
- Needham analyst Laura Martin retained a Hold rating.
The range of ratings matters. A higher target from one firm is an estimate of future share value, not a guaranteed outcome or a consensus forecast. Analysts are weighing higher average selling prices, a new premium product and launch timing against possible volume pressure and the still-uncertain size of the foldable market.

Do Pro Max production cuts prove weak demand?
No. The evidence supports a dispute, not a definitive conclusion.

AppleInsider reported JPMorgan’s opposing interpretation. The bank called the reductions typical production adjustments and said iPhone 18 Pro demand was at least fractionally higher than iPhone 17 Pro demand. Component schedules can change for several reasons, including inventory balancing, supplier constraints, manufacturing transitions or demand forecasts; a cut in an order is not the same as a confirmed collapse in retail sales.

The unresolved issues are practical ones for investors and buyers:
- The $100 increase in Pro pricing could test how much demand is sensitive to price.
- Supply constraints or manufacturing timing could look like demand weakness in supplier data.
- The delayed base iPhone 18 changes the normal mix of models in the launch period.
- Lower component orders could eventually pressure margins if Apple cannot maintain premium pricing, but current reports do not establish that outcome.
Duo versus iPhone 18 Pro Max: which fits which buyer?
| Consideration | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $1,999 | $1,299 |
| Availability | October 23, 2026 | September 18, 2026; preorders began September 12 |
| Screen and form factor | Foldable design with a 7.6-inch unfolded display, split-screen use and Apple Pencil support | Conventional Pro Max design; AP-reported 45-hour video-playback claim |
| Best-supported use case | Multitasking and a larger canvas in a pocketable foldable format | Lower entry price, long video playback and the established Pro Max camera and charging improvements reported by AP |
| Main uncertainty | First-generation foldable durability, supply and category adoption | How the higher Pro pricing affects demand and whether reported production changes are routine or demand-driven |
Choose the Duo if the foldable workflow is the reason to upgrade
The Duo’s defining benefit is not a small specification edge; it is the unfolded workspace and split-screen layout. Buyers who will regularly read, write, annotate with Apple Pencil or run two views at once may value that format enough to justify the $700 premium over the Pro Max. They should also accept the uncertainty that comes with Apple’s first entry into this category and wait for confirmed regional stock and accessory compatibility before ordering.

Choose the Pro Max if value, battery claims or cameras matter more
The Pro Max costs substantially less at its starting price and is available earlier. Apple’s reported 45-hour video-playback figure, along with camera and charging improvements reported by the AP, makes it the more conventional choice for buyers who do not need a foldable screen. Its risk is mainly economic: the $100 Pro-model price increase and disputed production reports leave open questions about demand, not about the basic form factor.
What investors should watch next
- Official shipment and sales disclosures: Apple’s filings and earnings commentary will be more reliable than supply-chain estimates for judging actual demand.
- Duo availability after October 23: Consistent stock across regions would indicate that reported production plans translated into shipping capacity; shortages would make early sales harder to interpret.
- December-quarter mix: Analysts are counting on Duo revenue to offset the missing regular iPhone 18 during the staggered launch.
- Pro-model pricing response: Promotions, delivery times and carrier demand can show whether the $100 increase is limiting purchases.
- Subsequent production revisions: Further supplier changes may clarify whether the Pro and Pro Max adjustments were routine balancing or a response to weaker orders.
For now, the most defensible reading is that Apple is committing substantial resources to a premium foldable while analysts see enough potential to lift some targets. The nearly 10 million figure remains a report, and the Pro Max cuts remain an unresolved explanation rather than proof of weak demand.
