Apple was ordered to pay Optis Cellular Technology a $502 million lump-sum royalty in a UK dispute over 4G/LTE standard-essential patents. Interest and legal fees were expected to push Apple’s total liability above $700 million. That does not mean the court awarded more than $700 million in principal patent damages.
What the court ordered Apple to pay
The ruling came from the England and Wales Court of Appeal on May 1, 2025. It set a $502 million lump-sum FRAND royalty for Apple’s worldwide use of relevant Optis LTE patents over the period from 2013 through 2027. Contemporaneous reporting said interest and fees could add more than $200 million, taking the overall liability above $700 million.

The important distinction is:
- $502 million: the court-ordered lump-sum royalty.
- More than $700 million: the reported total after interest and fees.
- Not established: that Apple had transferred the money or that the final amount could not change through further proceedings.
The award was not simply a routine penalty added to an earlier judgment. The UK High Court had previously set compensation at $56.43 million plus interest for a defined period. Optis challenged that valuation, and the Court of Appeal adopted a different assessment tied to a global licence covering 2013–2027.

What patents and products were involved?
The dispute concerned 4G/LTE standard-essential patents used in cellular communications. Reporting identified iPhones and iPads as products using the relevant technology. This was not a case about a general iPhone design patent or a specific Apple feature such as FaceTime, Wi-Fi, or Apple Watch blood-oxygen monitoring.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
A standard-essential patent covers technology considered necessary to implement an industry standard. Because manufacturers cannot realistically build compatible products without using the standard, patent owners generally make licensing commitments designed to require FRAND terms—fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms.
As a result, the central issue was not merely whether Apple’s devices used cellular technology. It was also what royalty would fairly compensate the patent holder for a licence covering the relevant portfolio and period.
Who is Optis?
Optis Cellular Technology LLC is a Texas-based patent-holding and licensing company. It does not manufacture smartphones or cellular network equipment. Optis argued that Apple used technology covered by its LTE patents without agreeing to an appropriate licence.

Apple characterised Optis as a company that buys patents and pursues companies that use them. Optis presents itself as a licensing business seeking compensation for its intellectual property. Those are competing descriptions of the parties’ dispute, not interchangeable facts.
Why the headline says “over $700 million”
News headlines commonly use the larger figure because the expected interest and fees were substantial. But describing the case as a court award of “more than $700 million in damages” obscures the legal structure of the ruling.
The principal figure was a $502 million lump-sum royalty for a defined global licence. The amount above $700 million reflected additional financial liabilities, particularly interest and fees. A FRAND royalty for a licence period is also not necessarily the same thing as a conventional jury damages award calculated only for past infringement.

What Apple said and what happens next
Apple said it was disappointed by the May 2025 decision and planned to appeal. As of the available information dated August 18, 2026, there is no verified basis here to say that Apple had already paid the judgment or that every possible appellate issue had been finally resolved.

The separate US Optis case
The UK ruling should not be confused with separate US litigation involving Optis. In June 2025, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit vacated a US infringement judgment and a separate $300 million damages retrial award. The court held that the jury question improperly grouped five asserted patents and did not ensure a unanimous finding on the same patent. Without a valid infringement finding, the damages verdict could not stand.

No verified UK sales ban
Apple was not reported as being ordered to stop selling iPhones or iPads in the UK. Apple had previously raised the possibility that an unfavourable royalty decision could create grounds for leaving the UK market, but later walked back that position. The case does not establish a current UK sales ban or an announced withdrawal.
No confirmed consumer surcharge
There is no verified evidence that Apple raised iPhone or iPad prices, added a patent surcharge, or planned to pass this specific liability directly to consumers. The payment is a company-level licensing cost. Its effect on margins, pricing, product strategy, or future negotiations with other patent holders would be speculation without a specific Apple disclosure.

No action required from users
The ruling does not by itself change how existing iPhones or iPads work, require users to update their devices, or establish that every Apple product infringes every Optis patent.
Bottom line
Apple’s widely reported “more than $700 million” Optis bill refers to a $502 million UK Court of Appeal lump-sum royalty for a global 2013–2027 LTE licence, plus interest and fees. It is not a verified $700 million principal damages award, not the separate US Optis case, and not evidence of an immediate iPhone price increase or UK sales ban.
