The original report was substantially correct, but the final valuation was higher than the early headline suggested. Anysphere, the company behind the AI coding editor Cursor, confirmed on June 5, 2025, that it had raised $900 million in Series C financing at a $9.9 billion post-money valuation. Thrive Capital led the round, which also included Accel, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and DST.
TechCrunch had reported on May 4, 2025, that Anysphere was raising approximately $900 million at a valuation of about $9 billion. The later company announcement established the confirmed figures.

What happened with Anysphere’s $900 million funding round?
Anysphere completed a $900 million Series C round that valued the company at $9.9 billion after the investment. The company said the funding would help advance AI coding research and improve Cursor, its principal product.
The financing is notable because it placed a relatively young developer-tools company among the highest-valued private businesses in artificial intelligence. It also showed how strongly investors were competing for companies involved in AI-assisted software development.

Report versus confirmation
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| May 4, 2025 | TechCrunch reported that Anysphere was raising $900 million at approximately a $9 billion valuation. |
| June 5, 2025 | Anysphere confirmed a $900 million Series C at a $9.9 billion valuation. |
That distinction matters. Anysphere did not raise $9 billion. It raised $900 million; approximately $9 billion was the valuation cited in the earlier report.
What are Anysphere and Cursor?
Anysphere is the company and research organization behind Cursor. Cursor is an AI-focused code editor designed to help developers work with software projects using natural-language instructions and AI-assisted workflows.
Cursor’s features include:
- Code generation, editing and autocomplete.
- Questions and answers about a codebase.
- Agent-style workflows that can make changes across multiple files.
- Background coding tasks.
- Bug-fixing features such as Bugbot.
Calling Cursor merely an autocomplete tool would undersell its current positioning. It is intended to be an AI-native development environment, although the practical experience depends on the models available, the developer’s workflow and the complexity of the task.
Cursor provides access to multiple frontier models rather than being synonymous with one particular AI model. That means model availability, quality, pricing and usage economics can change over time.
Who invested in the round?
The confirmed investors were:
- Thrive Capital
- Accel
- Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z
- DST
The initial TechCrunch report highlighted Thrive, a16z and Accel. DST appeared in Anysphere’s subsequent confirmation, so the company’s announcement is the better source for the complete investor list.
What does the $9.9 billion valuation mean?
The $9.9 billion figure was Anysphere’s post-money valuation in the June 2025 financing. In simple terms, it was the negotiated implied value of the private company after the new capital was added.
It does not mean:
- Anysphere received $9.9 billion in cash.
- The company has $9.9 billion in its bank account.
- Investors bought the company outright for $9.9 billion.
- Anysphere can necessarily be sold for exactly $9.9 billion.
- The company is profitable or guaranteed to produce future returns.
Private-market valuations are tied to financing terms and can move substantially in a later funding round, secondary transaction, acquisition or market downturn. The precise wording is therefore that Anysphere was valued at $9.9 billion in its June 2025 financing, not that it is necessarily worth that amount today.

How quickly did Anysphere’s valuation rise?
TechCrunch reported that Anysphere had previously raised $100 million from Thrive and a16z at a $2.6 billion valuation in December 2024. Compared with the confirmed $9.9 billion valuation in June 2025, the implied valuation was about 3.8 times higher in roughly six months.
That calculation compares reported financing valuations; it is not a company-reported growth statistic. It also does not mean the business’s revenue, profits or cash grew by the same multiple.

Bloomberg separately reported that Cursor had exceeded $500 million in annualized revenue, according to the company. Annualized revenue is a run-rate measure: it generally extrapolates a current pace of revenue into a year. It is not necessarily audited revenue for the preceding 12 months, gross profit, free cash flow or net income.
Why did investors value Cursor so highly?
The valuation reflects investor expectations rather than proof that Cursor will become a durable market leader. Several factors likely contributed to the financing:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Demand for AI-assisted development: Software companies are looking for ways to help developers generate, understand, test and modify code more quickly.
- An AI-first product: Cursor is built around AI-assisted development rather than adding AI as a small feature to an established editor.
- Reported commercial momentum: The more-than-$500 million annualized-revenue figure reported by Bloomberg, with attribution to the company, suggested unusually rapid adoption.
- Strategic importance of developer tools: Coding assistants can become deeply embedded in how software is created, making them potentially valuable distribution channels for AI models and services.
- Venture competition: Investors have been willing to pay high prices for companies showing rapid growth in important AI categories.
None of those factors establishes profitability, sustainable margins or product superiority. A coding assistant can generate substantial subscription revenue while also incurring significant costs for model inference, infrastructure, support and research.
What might Anysphere use the money for?
Anysphere specifically said the financing would support the frontier of AI coding research and improvements to Cursor. The company did not publish a detailed allocation of the $900 million.
Reasonable potential uses include hiring researchers and engineers, expanding infrastructure, paying model-inference costs, improving enterprise security and administration, and building sales and support operations. Those are possibilities, not confirmed spending plans.
The company’s pricing documentation makes clear that agent usage is connected to model-inference costs and that included usage varies by subscription. This makes cost control an important business question as users perform more complex, multi-file tasks.

Model and inference costs
Cursor’s economics partly depend on what it pays for access to external models and how much computing each task requires. Heavy agent use can consume more resources than simple autocomplete. The company must either control those costs, negotiate better rates, develop additional technology or charge customers enough to preserve attractive margins.
Competition from existing platforms
AI coding features may increasingly become standard inside established editors, developer platforms and model providers. GitHub Copilot, for example, is available across environments including VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim and Xcode, according to GitHub’s plans page.
Code quality and security
Generated code still requires review, testing and security checks. AI tools can increase productivity in some workflows while also creating additional maintenance, debugging or compliance work if developers accept changes without adequate oversight.

Changing customer economics
Enterprise buyers will want evidence that AI coding tools produce measurable productivity gains, not simply more generated code. They may also assess data handling, privacy, retention, access controls and security terms before deploying the product broadly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDependence on changing models
Cursor’s value can be affected by the availability, pricing and quality of the models it offers. Model providers can change their prices, policies or access terms, potentially affecting both the user experience and Anysphere’s costs.
What does the funding mean for developers and buyers?
The financing does not automatically make Cursor the best or cheapest coding assistant. It does indicate that major investors believe Anysphere has a strong opportunity in AI-assisted software development.
For individual developers, the practical decision is about workflow rather than valuation. Cursor may appeal to someone who wants a dedicated AI-first editor, model choice and agent-oriented multi-file work. A developer who prefers to remain in an existing IDE may find an extension-based assistant more convenient.
For teams, the relevant questions include usage volume, model selection, privacy controls, centralized billing, administration, integration with existing repositories and the quality of review processes. The product’s fundraising history should be treated as business context, not as a substitute for evaluating those requirements.

Cursor versus GitHub Copilot
| Consideration | Cursor | GitHub Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Core approach | Dedicated AI-native code editor with agent and codebase workflows. | AI assistance integrated across GitHub and multiple editors and IDEs. |
| Best fit | Developers willing to adopt an AI-first editor. | Developers already centered on GitHub or an existing supported IDE. |
| Individual pricing snapshot | Hobby free; Pro listed at $20 per month; Ultra at $200 per month. | Free; Pro listed at $10 per month; Pro+ at $39 per month; Max at $100 per month. |
| Team and enterprise | Teams listed at $40 per user per month; Enterprise custom pricing. | Business listed at $19 per user per month and Enterprise at $39 per user per month in GitHub’s documentation. |
Prices were checked on August 18, 2026 and can change. Included usage, model allowances and billing mechanics should be confirmed on the Cursor pricing page, Cursor pricing documentation and GitHub’s plan documentation.
Cursor’s pricing documentation also indicates that model choice and agent activity affect consumption. A low advertised subscription price may therefore not predict the total cost for heavy users.
What should readers take away?
The original $900 million, $9 billion report was a real early snapshot of Anysphere’s financing. The confirmed deal was more precise: $900 million raised at a $9.9 billion post-money valuation in June 2025.
The round reflects investor confidence in Cursor’s growth and in the broader market for AI-assisted coding. It does not establish that Anysphere is profitable, that its valuation is permanent, or that Cursor will defeat competitors such as GitHub Copilot. The long-term test is whether Anysphere can turn rapid adoption and reported revenue momentum into a durable, cost-efficient platform that developers and enterprises continue to use.
