It was designed to answer seller questions, summarize account metrics, and provide Amazon-specific guidance. Amazon now presents the technology as Seller Assistant, an expanded, more agentic tool for inventory, account health, compliance, growth planning, and other seller workflows.
The distinction matters: some capabilities described in 2024 were planned rather than available at launch, while later Seller Assistant materials describe a broader product. Availability and permissions can still vary by Amazon store, language, account, and user type.

What Project Amelia was
Project Amelia was Amazon’s codename for a generative-AI “selling expert” integrated into Seller Central. Amazon built the initial service using Amazon Bedrock, combining general AI capabilities with Amazon-specific selling knowledge and information from a seller’s account.

The September 2024 launch began as a beta for an initial group of U.S. sellers, followed by a broader U.S. rollout. Amazon said additional countries and languages were planned for later in 2024, but the launch announcement did not make the tool universally available to every seller or marketplace.

Unlike a generic chatbot, Amelia was intended to use seller-specific information. That made it potentially useful for questions that depend on a particular account’s sales, traffic, products, or operational status.
What Amelia could do at launch
Answer Amazon selling questions
Sellers could ask about topics such as preparing for the holiday season, Amazon policies, selling best practices, and business growth. The goal was to summarize relevant information instead of requiring sellers to search through Seller Central documentation manually.
Amazon’s original Project Amelia announcement described the assistant as drawing on Amazon’s seller knowledge and the seller’s business context. That did not mean every answer was guaranteed to be correct or that Amelia replaced Seller Central’s official policy pages.

Summarize business metrics
At launch, Amelia could provide information including:
- Recent sales
- Units sold
- Website traffic
- Comparisons with the same period in the previous year
- Product-level follow-up information, such as sales, growth, and customer traffic
This account-level access was one of the product’s main differences from a general-purpose AI assistant. A seller could ask for a conversational summary rather than assemble the information manually from reports and dashboards.

Help investigate problems
A seller could describe an issue such as a missing inventory update and receive guidance or help connecting with support. However, the original launch materials treated more advanced issue resolution as an evolving capability.
Amazon said Amelia would eventually be able to manage tasks, anticipate seller needs, and take action on a seller’s behalf. Those statements should not be read as proof that fully autonomous problem-solving was available on September 19, 2024. Contemporary coverage from TechCrunch likewise noted that several action-oriented capabilities did not have a firm announced timetable.

How Project Amelia became Seller Assistant
Amazon later moved away from the Project Amelia codename and began describing the product as Seller Assistant. In its later announcement, Amazon characterized Seller Assistant as the next evolution of the original seller expert and described it as an agentic AI partner.
Amazon says the later version uses Amazon Bedrock, including Amazon Nova and Anthropic Claude, but that description belongs to the later Seller Assistant product. It should not be applied retroactively to the original launch as though Amazon had identified one specific foundation model for Amelia from the beginning.
Inventory and fulfillment recommendations
Later Seller Assistant materials describe monitoring of Fulfillment by Amazon inventory and warnings about slow-moving products before long-term storage fees may become an issue. The assistant may recommend options such as markdowns or removals and prepare shipment recommendations using current and historical demand.

These are recommendations, not guarantees of lower fees, better sell-through, or higher profit. A seller should check the underlying inventory position, fees, demand assumptions, and cash-flow consequences before accepting an action.
Account health and compliance guidance
Seller Assistant is also described as monitoring account-health concerns, identifying possible product-safety or compliance issues, and guiding sellers through documentation problems. That can shorten the path to the relevant workflow, but it does not make the assistant a lawyer, tax adviser, regulator, or compliance certification service.
A seller remains responsible for the accuracy of submitted documents and for meeting applicable Amazon, legal, product-safety, tax, and regulatory requirements.
Growth planning and advertising
Amazon says Seller Assistant can help create growth plans involving promotions, inventory, and marketing. Its later materials also connect the experience with AI-assisted advertising through Amazon Ads Creative Studio.
Amazon cites a 338% increase in click-through rate for one seller’s Sponsored Video advertisement. That is an Amazon-provided example for a particular seller, not independent evidence of a typical result. Seller Assistant cannot guarantee sales, advertising return on investment, or profitability.
Who could use it, and does it cost extra?
At launch, access was limited to selected U.S. sellers, with a planned expansion across the United States and later international markets. The current position is broader: Amazon says Seller Assistant is available to all sellers in the U.S. store at no additional cost.

“No additional cost” applies to access to the assistant. It does not make selling on Amazon free. Sellers may still incur referral, fulfillment, storage, subscription, advertising, and other marketplace-related costs.
Access should not be assumed to be identical everywhere. Store, country, language, account type, rollout stage, and user permissions can affect availability. A Seller Central forum announcement describes secondary-user access in the U.S., Germany, and India stores, with the account owner retaining control over permissions. That does not establish universal availability for every secondary user or marketplace.
The practical next step is to sign in to the relevant Seller Central account and look for Seller Assistant. If it is unavailable, the account or store may not yet be supported, or the user may need permission from the account owner.

AI answers can be wrong
Reuters reported that Amazon acknowledged Amelia could hallucinate and that mistakes would be addressed according to their severity. Being connected to Seller Central sources reduces the need to search manually, but it does not make generated answers infallible.
Before acting:
- Verify policy answers against the current Seller Central help page.
- Check reported figures against Business Reports or the relevant account dashboard.
- Do not use one AI response as the sole basis for a compliance decision.
- Review any price, inventory, listing, advertising, or account action before authorizing it.
- Save screenshots or exports when documenting an account or inventory dispute.
Recommendations reflect Amazon’s ecosystem
Seller Assistant’s Amazon integration is its greatest practical advantage, but it is also a limitation. The tool is designed to help a business operate within Amazon. It is not a neutral adviser on whether Amazon is the best marketplace, whether a product should be sold through Shopify or Walmart, or whether a seller’s total business is profitable after every external cost.

Its recommendations may be useful for Amazon-native decisions while being incomplete for broader decisions involving wholesale terms, payroll, taxes, outside advertising, returns, cash flow, or other marketplaces.
Permissioned automation still needs controls
The shift from answering questions to taking approved actions can save time, particularly for agencies and larger seller teams. It also increases the importance of permission controls, review-before-execution steps, audit trails, and clear explanations of the data behind a recommendation.

Who is Seller Assistant most useful for?
- New sellers: Useful for navigating Seller Central and finding initial explanations of policies and workflows, but important decisions still require verification.
- Established FBA sellers: Potentially valuable for inventory monitoring, product-level analysis, and account-health follow-up.
- Large brands: Helpful as an Amazon-native operational layer, though it does not replace broader financial, supply-chain, or regulatory systems.
- Agencies and delegated teams: Potentially useful where secondary-user permissions are supported, provided the account owner controls access carefully.
- Multi-marketplace sellers: Less useful as a complete business intelligence tool because it is centered on Amazon data and workflows.
Third-party services such as Jungle Scout, Helium 10, and SellerApp occupy a different category. They generally focus more on product research, keyword analysis, competitor intelligence, advertising, or analytics. Their current pricing and feature availability should be checked directly. Sellers do not need to buy one of these services merely to access Seller Assistant.
The bottom line on Project Amelia
Project Amelia marked Amazon’s move from searchable seller documentation toward a conversational, account-aware assistant. At launch, its clearest functions were answering questions and summarizing seller metrics; issue resolution and autonomous actions were described as future capabilities.
As of August 18, 2026, the most accurate current name is Seller Assistant. Amazon describes it as a broader agentic service that can recommend or, with permission, help carry out operational tasks. Its value depends on marketplace availability, account data, accuracy, and the seller’s willingness to verify high-impact recommendations before acting.
