Alphabet reported $80.539 billion in revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2024, up 15% from a year earlier. Operating income, net income and earnings per share all grew faster than revenue. The quarter was led by Google Search, YouTube advertising and Google Cloud, while Alphabet also announced its first quarterly dividend and an additional $70 billion share-repurchase authorization.

Google Search remained the financial engine
Google Search and other revenue reached $46.156 billion, compared with $40.359 billion in Q1 2023, an increase of approximately 14%.

Search generated more than five times Google Cloud’s quarterly revenue and remained Alphabet’s largest individual revenue stream. That makes the Search result especially important: despite concerns that conversational artificial intelligence could change how people search, the reported Q1 figures showed continued growth in the established advertising business.
However, one strong quarter does not settle the longer-term question. The results demonstrate current Search monetization, not that AI will have no effect on search behavior, advertising formats or margins in the future.
YouTube advertising accelerated
YouTube advertising revenue rose 21% to $8.090 billion, from $6.693 billion a year earlier. Management said the performance reflected both direct-response advertising, designed to generate immediate actions, and brand advertising.

YouTube’s growth was faster than the overall Google Services business, showing that the company’s advertising recovery was not limited to Search.
Google Network revenue declined slightly
Google Network revenue fell approximately 1% to $7.413 billion, from $7.496 billion in Q1 2023.
This was an important qualification to the broader advertising story. Search and YouTube grew strongly, but Alphabet did not report growth across every advertising category.
Subscriptions, platforms and devices grew 18%
Revenue from subscriptions, platforms and devices increased to $8.739 billion, from $7.413 billion. This category includes offerings such as Google One, YouTube subscriptions, Pixel devices and other non-advertising products.

The category is smaller than Search but has become a meaningful source of diversification as Alphabet expands recurring subscription products and hardware-related revenue.
Google Cloud combined growth with improved profitability
Google Cloud revenue grew 28% to $9.574 billion, from $7.454 billion. More significantly, the segment reported $900 million in operating income, compared with $191 million in Q1 2023.
Cloud therefore was not merely a fast-growing revenue line. It also became a more substantial contributor to Alphabet’s operating profit. The $900 million figure is operating income, not standalone net income.
Google Cloud remained smaller than Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Comparisons among the cloud providers should be made carefully because companies may use different reporting periods, segment definitions and accounting presentations.
Other Bets remained loss-making
Other Bets revenue increased to $495 million, from $288 million, while its operating loss narrowed to $1.020 billion from $1.225 billion.
The improvement was positive, but Other Bets remained financially small compared with Google Services and Cloud and continued to consume capital. It is better understood as a portfolio of long-term opportunities than as a major current revenue engine.
Why did Alphabet’s profit grow faster than revenue?
Alphabet’s operating margin expanded from 25.0% to 31.6%, helping operating income rise 46% to $25.472 billion. Net income increased 57% to $23.662 billion, and diluted EPS rose to $1.89 from $1.17.

Several factors contributed to the improvement:
- Higher advertising revenue: Search and YouTube produced large increases in revenue.
- Cloud operating leverage: Google Cloud moved from $191 million to $900 million in quarterly operating income while continuing to grow.
- Cost discipline: The wider operating margin indicates that expenses did not rise as quickly as revenue and operating profit.
- Share-count effects: EPS reflects both net income and the number of diluted shares, so its increase should not be attributed solely to operating performance.
Alphabet also said revenue growth was 16% on a constant-currency basis, compared with 15% as reported, on its Q1 earnings call.
Did Alphabet beat analysts’ expectations?
Yes. Contemporaneous market coverage reported that Alphabet’s approximately $80.54 billion in revenue was above estimates generally ranging from about $78.6 billion to $78.75 billion. Diluted EPS of $1.89 also exceeded estimates commonly cited between $1.51 and $1.53.
Those estimates varied by data provider and publication. The most accurate wording is therefore that Alphabet reported revenue and earnings above analysts’ expectations, rather than presenting one consensus figure as universally authoritative. For example, Investing.com’s contemporaneous coverage cited its own estimate comparison, while other outlets used different methodologies.
What was the AI and Gemini angle?
Management described Alphabet as entering its “Gemini era” and emphasized artificial-intelligence research, infrastructure, products and demand for AI capabilities through Google Cloud. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Search, YouTube and Cloud as the company’s strongest performers.
Alphabet also discussed efficiency improvements in generative-AI systems and the relationship between AI infrastructure and Cloud demand. The company’s official Q1 earnings commentary framed AI as a major strategic opportunity.
The financial distinction matters:
- Verified Q1 results: Search, YouTube, subscriptions and Cloud revenue increased.
- Management’s interpretation: Gemini and AI investments could support future products, user engagement and Cloud demand.
- Unresolved issue: Generative AI could either strengthen Google’s search economics or disrupt the way users search and advertising is displayed.
Alphabet’s financial statements did not disclose a separate “AI revenue” category. It would therefore be too broad to say that AI independently drove the quarter’s revenue. The reported revenue base was still dominated by established Search and advertising businesses, with Cloud providing an important growth and profitability contribution.
Why the dividend and buyback mattered
Alphabet announced its first quarterly cash dividend of $0.20 per share. The dividend had a record date of June 10, 2024, and a payment date of June 17, 2024. The board also authorized an additional $70 billion share repurchase.

- Intuitive keyboard layout with minimal keystrokes required for many common functions.
- Easy-to-read display with adjustable contrast and on-screen labels.

The dividend represented a significant change in capital allocation for a company historically known for retaining cash to fund infrastructure, acquisitions, research and new products. The buyback showed that Alphabet intended to return substantial capital while continuing to invest heavily in AI systems and data centers.
Investors should not interpret the first dividend as a guaranteed permanent payment at the same amount. Alphabet’s Form 10-Q stated that the board was not obligated to declare a dividend in every quarter or at any particular amount. Future declarations remained subject to board approval.

How did investors react?
Alphabet shares jumped sharply after the earnings release. Contemporaneous reports described double-digit gains in after-hours or premarket trading, with the exact percentage changing depending on the timestamp and trading venue. The reaction reflected several factors at once: the revenue and EPS beats, stronger Cloud profitability, the new dividend and the additional buyback authorization.
After-hours and premarket movements are not the same as a regular-session closing return. It is therefore safer to describe the stock as having risen sharply rather than attach one intraday percentage without specifying when and where it was measured. Associated Press coverage also reported the earnings, capital-return announcements and investor response.

AI could disrupt Search economics
Conversational search and AI-generated answers could alter user behavior, page traffic and advertising placement. Q1 Search growth showed no immediate deterioration, but it did not resolve the longer-term monetization risk.
AI infrastructure is expensive
Capital expenditures rose 91% year over year to approximately $12.012 billion. Servers, networking equipment, data centers and technical infrastructure are essential to Alphabet’s AI strategy, but they can pressure free cash flow and margins if spending grows faster than revenue or productivity gains.

Google advertising continued to represent the overwhelming majority of Alphabet’s revenue. That exposes the company to economic cycles, advertiser demand, privacy changes, regulation and shifts in consumer behavior.

Regulatory pressure remains separate from the earnings result
Alphabet’s strong quarter did not resolve its antitrust and other legal disputes. A full regulatory analysis would require court filings, government complaints and the company’s risk-factor disclosures; the earnings release alone is not sufficient evidence for those issues.
Cloud faces powerful competitors
Google Cloud’s 28% growth and improved operating income were important developments, but the segment still competed with larger providers, particularly AWS and Azure. Growth rates should be compared only after aligning reporting periods and accounting definitions.
Other Bets still carries losses
Other Bets reduced its operating loss but remained unprofitable. The segment represents a continuing cost and optionality trade-off rather than a meaningful contributor to current consolidated earnings.
What Alphabet’s Q1 report really showed
Alphabet’s Q1 2024 report showed a strong operating quarter across its core businesses. Search remained the primary financial driver, YouTube advertising grew faster than the company overall, and Google Cloud combined rapid growth with a much larger operating profit.
The report also marked a strategic and financial transition. Alphabet began returning capital through its first dividend and a larger buyback while simultaneously increasing investment in AI infrastructure. The immediate numbers were strong, but the central long-term debate remained unresolved: whether Alphabet can use AI to reinforce Search and expand Cloud without allowing infrastructure costs or product disruption to weaken its economics.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Alphabet’s Q1 2024 revenue reached $80.5 billion because its core advertising business remained resilient, YouTube accelerated and Google Cloud grew profitably. AI was the company’s strategic theme, but the reported figures did not separately identify AI revenue. The quarter also introduced a new capital-return policy through Alphabet’s first dividend and an additional $70 billion buyback, while sharply higher capital spending highlighted the cost of competing in AI.
