AI Is Changing How Small Online Sellers Decide What to Make

AI is moving into the earliest stage of ecommerce—not just writing product descriptions, but helping sellers decide which customer problems to solve, which versions to make, how much inventory to order, what price to test, and what to change after launch.

For Etsy makers, Amazon sellers, Shopify merchants, print-on-demand operators, and digital-product creators, the practical benefit is faster analysis and cheaper experimentation. The risk is equally important: AI can turn weak signals into confident-sounding recommendations, accelerate competition, and encourage sellers to invest in products that look promising but do not produce a profit.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The best use of AI is therefore not to ask, “What product will make money?” It is to use AI to organize evidence, generate testable options, expose unknowns, and shorten the cycle between a customer problem and a small, measured experiment.

The product decision is moving upstream

Historically, many small sellers began with intuition: a craft they knew how to make, a trend they noticed, or a product that appeared popular on a marketplace. Research often meant browsing bestseller lists, reading a sample of reviews, comparing prices, and making a bet.

AI does not remove the bet, but it can make the process more systematic. A seller can now combine search behavior, marketplace data, customer reviews, product questions, pricing, returns, and social commentary; ask an AI tool to classify recurring patterns; generate several product concepts; and test a smaller version before committing to a large order.

That makes AI a decision-support layer, not an autonomous product oracle. Amazon explicitly describes its Product Opportunity Explorer as a guide rather than a guarantee of sales, and says sellers remain responsible for judging demand and investment risk. Amazon’s documentation also warns that demand, prices, and competitive conditions can change.

The central change is speed: AI compresses the time between noticing a customer problem, designing a plausible response, and learning whether people will pay for it.

Which product decisions AI can influence

1. What should I make?

AI-assisted research can help identify:

  • Rising or seasonal search terms.
  • Product categories with demand and relatively weak competition.
  • Frequently requested features or variants.
  • Adjacent products existing customers may buy.
  • Regional or audience-specific needs.
  • Unmet needs suggested by negative reviews or low-conversion searches.

Amazon’s Product Opportunity Explorer, available through Seller Central → Growth → Product Opportunity Explorer, groups search terms around products customers view or purchase. It surfaces information related to demand, purchasing behavior, competition, pricing, reviews, returns, saturation, and product features. It can also identify areas described as unmet demand when customer interest exists alongside lower-than-benchmark conversion.

That information is useful for forming a hypothesis, not proving a market. Amazon data primarily describes behavior within Amazon, with its search algorithm, customer mix, and catalog structure. A gap on Amazon may not be a gap on Etsy, Shopify, or a local market.

2. Which version should I make?

AI can synthesize reviews and customer questions into possible product specifications, such as:

  • A different size, shape, color, or material.
  • A bundle that solves several related tasks.
  • A personalization option.
  • Better packaging or storage.
  • Easier setup, cleaning, or transport.
  • A version designed for a narrower customer segment.
  • An improvement addressing a recurring defect or usability complaint.

These are hypotheses. If several reviews say an item is “too small,” that does not automatically prove customers will buy a larger version. The larger product may cost too much to ship, fit fewer storage spaces, or attract a different customer than the original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. How much should I make?

AI can help with demand forecasting, seasonal planning, low-stock alerts, variant-level inventory analysis, and reorder prioritization. Shopify describes Sidekick as an embedded commerce assistant that can help merchants review inventory, audit shipping, analyze pricing, and create low-stock workflows.

For a small seller, the most valuable output may not be an exact forecast. It may be a more disciplined launch decision: produce 25 units rather than 250, test three colors rather than ten, or delay a reorder until returns and repeat purchases are understood.

Forecasts are especially fragile for new products because there is little or no historical sales data. A generated projection should not override cash-flow limits, supplier lead times, minimum order quantities, or the cost of being wrong.

4. What should I charge?

AI tools can compare prices, evaluate positioning, identify price bands, and suggest pricing experiments. Shopify’s Smart Pricing documentation says its AI-generated price tips can support experiments, but the merchant must decide whether to apply a recommendation; the app does not automatically change customer-facing prices in real time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A competitor’s price is not necessarily your viable price. Your calculation must include materials, packaging, labor, marketplace and payment fees, shipping subsidies, advertising, expected refunds, and returns. A product can have strong demand and still be a poor business if the remaining contribution margin is too small.

  • MOBILE PRINTING MADE EASY: Go mobile with the Brother Mobile Connect app(5) that delivers easy onscreen menu navigation for printing, copying, scanning, and device management from your mobile device. Monitor your ink usage with Page Gauge to help ensure you don’t run out(6).

5. How should I present it?

AI can draft product titles, bullet points, descriptions, search terms, comparison charts, social posts, customer-service replies, image concepts, and lifestyle scenes. Amazon says its generative listing tools can create titles, bullets, descriptions, and some image or A+ Content material.

Better presentation can make an early product test cheaper. A seller can compare different positioning statements or mock up several bundles before investing in a full brand system. But generated images must not disguise an unfinished product, show impossible materials, or imply dimensions and features the actual item does not have. Misleading presentation creates expectation gaps, returns, and distrust.

The evidence stack: what AI should and should not treat as proof

Not all signals have equal commercial value. A practical evidence hierarchy is:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Actual purchases, conversion, repeat purchases, and returns. These are closest to real commercial behavior.
  2. Marketplace demand and search data. Useful, but limited to the platform and its measurement methods.
  3. Customer reviews, questions, and support messages. Valuable for identifying problems and desired improvements.
  4. Search trends and social behavior. Helpful for direction, timing, and language, but weaker evidence of willingness to pay.
  5. AI-generated suggestions. Useful for expanding options, but not evidence of demand by themselves.

First-party marketplace data

Marketplace data may include searches, purchases, product views, reviews, returns, pricing, competition, and saturation. It is powerful because it is close to commercial behavior, but it is incomplete and platform-specific.

Shopify’s product-selection guidance recommends combining research inputs such as Google Trends and social-media analysis. Google Trends can help show whether interest is rising, falling, seasonal, or concentrated in a particular geography. It cannot tell you exact sales, profit, or whether people will pay enough for your product.

Reviews and customer language

Review analysis is one of the most practical uses of AI. A seller can provide a large, lawful-to-use collection of reviews and ask the system to group comments into themes such as:

  • Breakage or durability problems.
  • Difficulty cleaning or storing the item.
  • Color or size differences from expectations.
  • Confusing instructions.
  • Missing accessories or variants.
  • Problems affecting a particular customer segment.

The seller should then inspect original comments manually. Summaries can hide minority complaints, sarcasm, context, or the difference between a one-off problem and a recurring one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Social and visual signals

Social platforms can reveal emerging aesthetics, creator-driven use cases, product styling, and customer complaints in comments. Views, likes, saves, and shares show attention—not necessarily purchase intent. A viral product can be difficult to manufacture, too expensive to ship, or appealing mainly because it is entertaining to watch.

How an AI-assisted product workflow works

Step 1: Start with a customer problem

Do not begin by asking an AI chatbot to list “profitable products.” Begin with questions such as:

  • Who is the customer?
  • What are they trying to accomplish?
  • What frustrates them?
  • What do they currently buy?
  • What do existing products fail to solve?

A specific problem produces better research than a broad category. “Storage for people who travel with large dogs” is more useful than “pet products.”

Step 2: Collect at least three independent signals

Use a combination of:

  1. A search or trend signal.
  2. Marketplace demand or a credible sales proxy.
  3. Review, customer-question, interview, or support-language evidence.

An idea supported only by an AI-generated list is weak. Require the tool to identify the source, date, geography, platform, and limits of every important claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Ask AI to structure evidence, not invent facts

Useful prompts ask AI to:

  • Cluster recurring complaints.
  • Count or rank feature mentions in the supplied material.
  • Separate customer segments.
  • Compare price bands.
  • Identify competitor weaknesses.
  • Distinguish evidence for demand from evidence against it.
  • List unknowns requiring manual verification.

For example:

“Using only the reviews and customer questions supplied below, group recurring problems by frequency and customer segment. Quote representative examples, identify contradictions, and list which product changes are hypotheses rather than established requirements. Do not estimate sales or search volume unless it appears in the source material.”

  • Reliable Wireless Connectivity - Enjoy stable and consistent connections with dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz or 5GHz), ensuring smooth printing from anywhere in your home or office
  • Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations

This is safer than asking a general chatbot to supply market facts from memory. AI systems can hallucinate search volumes, sales estimates, demographic claims, supplier capabilities, trend direction, and legal conclusions.

Step 4: Generate several constrained concepts

Ask for alternatives based on meaningful constraints: customer segment, price point, material, size, use case, bundle, personalization level, and manufacturing complexity.

The goal is not to accept the first idea. It is to widen the option set quickly and compare trade-offs. A concept that sounds less exciting may be the better business if it uses standard materials, ships cheaply, and solves a clear problem.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Step 5: Apply business constraints

Reject or redesign ideas that fail on:

  • Gross or contribution margin.
  • Shipping cost and package size.
  • Minimum order quantity.
  • Manufacturing lead time.
  • Quality-control requirements.
  • Safety or regulatory requirements.
  • Returns exposure.
  • Fragility or personalization bottlenecks.
  • Copyright, trademark, or likeness risks.
  • Marketplace policies.

Step 6: Test cheaply

Possible tests include a small production run, a waitlist, customer interviews, a landing page, a limited listing, a small advertising experiment, a preorder where legally and operationally appropriate, or a low-risk variant of an existing product.

A digital mockup can test whether an idea attracts attention, but it should be clearly presented as a concept if the product does not yet exist. A click is not a sale, and a preorder is not evidence of repeat demand unless fulfillment and refund obligations are handled properly.

Step 7: Feed real results back into the process

After launch, track:

  • Impressions and click-through rate.
  • Add-to-cart and conversion rate.
  • Average order value.
  • Advertising cost.
  • Refunds and returns.
  • Questions asked before purchase.
  • Review sentiment.
  • Repeat purchases.
  • Profit after fees, fulfillment, and labor.

AI becomes more useful when the seller has actual business data. Before launch, it mainly organizes external signals and generates hypotheses. After launch, it can help identify which assumptions were wrong.

Platform-native tools worth considering

Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer

Best fit: Sellers already considering Amazon, particularly physical-product sellers who need marketplace-specific information about searches, purchases, reviews, returns, pricing, and competition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Access it through Seller Central → Growth → Product Opportunity Explorer. Amazon’s currently displayed selling-plan prices are $0.99 per item sold for the Individual plan or $39.99 per month for the Professional plan, plus selling fees. Confirm current pricing and eligibility before signing up.

Limitation: It is an Amazon decision aid, not a universal market database or sales guarantee. A seller whose main business is Etsy, Shopify, local retail, or bespoke work should not assume Amazon behavior represents that customer base.

Shopify Sidekick

Best fit: Sellers building a branded storefront who need help with product content, pricing analysis, marketing, inventory, and workflows.

Shopify describes Sidekick as an AI commerce assistant for starting, running, and growing a store. Its listed uses include pricing analysis, social content, product descriptions, marketing-mix analysis, shipping audits, low-stock alerts, and performance summaries. Shopify also says Sidekick can generate text and images through natural-language prompts; its guidance on generated content places responsibility for originality and infringement on the merchant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sidekick is embedded in a commerce platform rather than being a dedicated product-discovery database. It is more useful once a merchant has store data and operational workflows. No standalone Sidekick price should be assumed without checking Shopify’s current plans and account availability.

Etsy’s AI seller tools

Best fit: Makers, designers, personalized-gift sellers, and digital-product creators whose differentiation depends on originality, aesthetics, and seller identity.

Etsy describes AI-supported tools for areas including buyer messaging, listing attributes, discovery, and review summaries. Feature availability can vary by account, language, geography, and rollout status.

Efficiency does not override Etsy’s creativity standards. Etsy’s seller guidance says AI-assisted products require a clear seller creative role and transparent representation. A seller should be able to explain what they designed, made, commissioned, or quality-checked, and should not present machine output as handmade or original when that description is inaccurate. Etsy’s transparency report provides additional context on its Creativity Standards and enforcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon Handmade

Best fit: Approved makers selling hand-altered, hand-designed, handcrafted, repurposed, or upcycled goods.

Amazon says approved Handmade sellers have the Professional monthly fee waived after the first month. It lists a 15% referral fee or $0.30 per shipped unit, whichever is greater. Makers must apply for approval. Customized Handmade products must be seller-fulfilled according to Amazon’s current program information.

Amazon Handmade can provide marketplace reach, but it is not a route around the requirement to qualify as a handmade seller. AI-generated concepts do not by themselves satisfy a handmade process requirement.

The financial test: demand is not enough

Every candidate product needs a realistic unit-economics calculation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Selling price
- cost of goods
- packaging
- marketplace fees
- payment processing
- shipping subsidy
- advertising
- expected returns and refunds
- labor
= contribution margin

Use conservative assumptions. Include the cost of failed units, replacement shipments, customer support, samples, payment delays, and storage where relevant. If a product requires advertising to generate every sale, model advertising as a cost rather than treating it as an optional later expense.

Also calculate the cash required before revenue arrives:

  • Samples and prototypes.
  • Tooling or design work.
  • Minimum supplier order.
  • Freight and import costs where applicable.
  • Packaging inventory.
  • Photography or compliance testing.
  • Marketplace and fulfillment reserves.

A high-demand product can still be a bad choice if it ties up cash, produces thin margins, or creates a large return burden.

Why AI recommendations fail

AI amplifies popular ideas

When many sellers use the same trend data and prompts, they may converge on the same products, colors, keywords, and bundles. AI can therefore increase saturation instead of creating an enduring advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform data is biased toward the platform

Amazon data is strongest for Amazon behavior; Etsy data is strongest for Etsy behavior. Recommendations may favor categories and seller actions that increase activity on that marketplace. Use platform data alongside customer conversations, broader search behavior, competitor analysis, and your own test results.

Search interest is not purchase intent

People search for information, entertainment, inspiration, and news. A sudden rise in interest may be temporary or curiosity-driven. Search volume should help determine what to investigate, not what inventory to buy.

Correlation is not causation

A rising search term may coincide with a trend without causing product purchases. A negative review may identify a problem without showing that customers will pay for a solution. The proposed improvement still needs a price, a feasible production method, and a test.

AI may optimize clicks rather than profit

High impressions and clicks can coexist with poor economics because of expensive shipping, low conversion, high returns, fragile products, or costly customer support. Evaluate profit after fulfillment—not just attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generated designs create intellectual-property risk

Before selling an AI-assisted design, check trademarks, copyrighted characters, celebrity likenesses, sports-team marks, existing design similarity, licensing restrictions, and marketplace rules. Shopify expressly warns that its AI tools do not support copyright or trademark infringement. An AI tool cannot provide a reliable legal clearance simply because it produces an image or says a design is safe.

Mockups can hide manufacturing problems

An AI-generated image can show a product with impossible seams, materials, proportions, or functionality. Treat a mockup as a communication or testing asset, not evidence that a supplier can manufacture the item. Obtain a physical sample and inspect it before making claims about quality or dimensions.

A hypothetical example: turning a complaint into a test

Imagine a seller researching travel products for owners of large dogs. The seller finds recurring review complaints that a popular accessory is difficult to store and that the carrying method is awkward.

  1. The seller collects reviews, customer questions, search trends, and competitor prices.
  2. AI groups the complaints and separates storage problems from unrelated quality issues.
  3. The seller asks for three concepts: a foldable version, a storage bag bundle, and a redesigned compact version.
  4. The seller checks material requirements, shipping dimensions, production complexity, and likely margin.
  5. The seller chooses the simplest concept and orders a small batch rather than committing to a large production run.
  6. After launch, the seller compares clicks, conversions, questions, returns, and reviews.
  7. If buyers ask whether the item fits a particular vehicle or complain about a weak fastening point, those observations become inputs to the next revision.

The example illustrates the appropriate role of AI: identifying and organizing patterns, expanding options, and helping analyze feedback. It does not establish that the product will sell or that the proposed solution is profitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical go/no-go checklist

Before spending money on inventory, tooling, design, or advertising, require the idea to pass all of these tests:

  • Demand: At least three independent signals support the customer problem.
  • Specificity: You can name the customer and the job the product performs.
  • Economics: Contribution margin remains positive after realistic costs.
  • Feasibility: You can produce, inspect, package, and fulfill it consistently.
  • Differentiation: The product improves fit, durability, convenience, personalization, accessibility, packaging, instructions, or another concrete attribute.
  • Compliance: No obvious safety, policy, trademark, copyright, or licensing barrier exists.
  • Validation: You have an affordable test that can produce meaningful evidence.
  • Stopping rule: You have a deadline and criteria for rejecting the idea rather than researching indefinitely.

If the idea fails one of these tests, use AI to diagnose the weakness and redesign the concept—or stop. Endless idea generation is not progress.

What AI changes—and what it does not

AI is genuinely good at finding recurring themes, comparing many product concepts, converting reviews into design questions, creating mockups, drafting tests, and monitoring repetitive operational data.

It still cannot decide reliably whether a customer problem matters enough, whether a product can be made well, whether customers will pay enough, whether you can compete, or whether the business can survive returns and fulfillment problems. Those judgments require context, accountability, and real-world evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a small seller, the strongest strategy is to use AI to make smaller, better-informed bets. Start with a customer problem; triangulate demand; calculate the economics; check policy and intellectual-property risks; test cheaply; and let actual buyer behavior determine whether to scale.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
