Acer Acquired E-Ten in 2008 to Enter the Smartphone Market

Acer announced its acquisition of Taiwanese handheld-device maker E-Ten on March 3, 2008, and completed the deal on September 1. It was a stock-for-stock transaction valued at about NT$9 billion at announcement—not a US$290 million cash purchase. Acer’s aim was to add mobile research and product-development capabilities as it expanded beyond PCs.

What Acer acquired

E-Ten Information Systems made smartphones, PDAs and other “smart handheld” products, including GPS-equipped devices. Its Glofiish line included Windows Mobile PDA-phones such as the X800 and M700. That mix reflects the market in 2008, when handhelds often combined phone, navigation and organizer features and did not fit today’s smartphone categories neatly. Contemporary reporting described E-Ten’s 2007 revenue as NT$3.71 billion, primarily from phones running Microsoft’s mobile operating system under the Glofiish brand.

Acer was buying more than a consumer-facing phone name: the strategic value included E-Ten’s mobile R&D and product-development experience. A contemporary product report described the X800 as a 3G PDA-phone running Windows Mobile 6.0 and the M700 as a GPS-equipped handheld with a sliding keyboard.

How the transaction worked

The March announcement and the September closing refer to different stages of the same deal. The terms reported at announcement and Acer’s later accounting record are not identical measures of value.

Why Acer wanted E-Ten

Acer was broadening its business beyond personal computers after its Gateway and Packard Bell transactions. It saw mobile devices as a potential source of growth and wanted to connect its PC expertise with communications technology. Acer chairman J.T. Wang described the search for new growth momentum; president Gianfranco Lanci said the company wanted to combine PC and communications capabilities, according to reporting at the time.

Buying E-Ten offered a faster route into mobile than developing an organization and product know-how from scratch. Acer’s own corporate milestones identify the 2008 acquisition as its move into smart handhelds. The ambition was broader than adding a phone brand: it was a bid to participate in ultra-mobile computing as the boundary between computers and communications devices shifted.

The acquisition-versus-outsourcing debate

Contemporary analysts disagreed about whether buying E-Ten was the right way to enter the category. One saw potential in E-Ten’s R&D team; another argued Acer could have entered smartphones more cheaply through contract manufacturers, according to the announcement coverage.

  • Acer’s case for buying: it gained an existing mobile R&D operation, design experience and a product base that could support entry into a new category.
  • The alternative: using outside manufacturers might have avoided the acquisition premium, but would not itself have supplied the same in-house development capability.

The choice also carried integration and execution risks. A mobile product business needed more than hardware design: it had to compete in a fast-changing software environment and build distribution and carrier relationships. The contemporary disagreement shows that the deal’s logic was strategic, not self-evidently cheaper or certain to pay off.

What happened after the deal

Acer expected to introduce Acer-branded smart handhelds by the end of 2008. Its corporate history records the launch of the Liquid smartphone line in 2009, following the acquisition. That establishes a path from acquiring mobile capabilities to launching Acer-branded phones; it does not mean later Acer phones were simply Glofiish devices with a new label. (Sources: announcement coverage and Acer’s timeline.)

The transaction is best understood as an attempt by a PC company to gain a foothold in mobile computing, rather than evidence that Acer became a lasting dominant smartphone rival to Apple, Samsung or HTC. The verified milestones show market entry and a subsequent product line; they do not, by themselves, establish the deal’s return on investment.
