Many households discuss investment returns, mortgage rates and tax brackets but avoid the more consequential question: who will claim Social Security, when will they claim it, and what will the survivor need if one spouse dies first? The decision changes monthly income for life, can affect a spouse’s protection, and must be coordinated with work, taxes and Medicare. The practical answer is to replace general assumptions with each household’s earnings record, side-by-side claiming scenarios and a written survivor plan.
Why claiming age is a household decision
The Social Security Administration (SSA) says retirement benefits can start at 62, but starting before full retirement age (FRA) produces a reduced monthly amount. Waiting after FRA earns delayed-retirement credits through age 70. There is no additional increase for delaying beyond 70.

That creates a trade-off rather than a universally correct age. Claiming earlier provides income sooner and may preserve savings for other uses. Delaying generally buys a larger worker benefit later, which can be especially valuable when the higher earner is also the spouse whose record would support the survivor’s income.
| Timing choice | What it does | Questions to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Age 62 | Starts retirement benefits at the earliest standard eligibility age, at a reduced monthly amount. | How much income is needed now? Is the claimant in poor health or facing a shorter expected retirement? Will early filing reduce the survivor’s future income? |
| Before FRA while working | Can provide income, but earnings above the annual limit can cause benefits to be withheld. | Will continued wages trigger withholding? Is there enough cash to wait, and how will taxes and health coverage interact? |
| FRA | Provides the unreduced amount under the program’s rules for the worker’s birth year. | Would waiting improve the household’s longevity or survivor protection enough to justify giving up earlier checks? |
| After FRA through age 70 | Adds delayed-retirement credits to the worker benefit until 70. | Can savings cover the bridge years? Which spouse has the larger benefit, and who is more likely to outlive the other? |
| After 70 | Does not increase the retirement benefit further for additional delay. | Would a different use of cash, tax planning or required distributions be more useful? |
Your actual dollar amounts depend on your covered earnings history. A rule-of-thumb percentage or a friend’s benefit cannot substitute for the estimate on your own record.

What working while collecting Social Security changes
Before FRA, wages can trigger the retirement earnings test. If earnings exceed the limit for the applicable year, SSA may withhold some benefits. The withheld amount is not simply lost: after FRA, SSA recalculates the benefit to credit months in which payments were withheld, and earnings no longer reduce benefits once FRA is reached.
Keep the earnings-test question separate from the taxable maximum. For 2026, SSA lists a maximum amount of $184,500 in earnings subject to Social Security tax. A worker earns one Social Security credit for each $1,890 of covered earnings in 2026, up to four credits. Those figures affect payroll taxation and eligibility records; they are not the annual earnings-test limit used to determine withholding before FRA.
Before filing while employed
- Enter expected wages, bonuses and self-employment income into the official earnings-test calculator for the year you will claim.
- Tell SSA promptly if your earnings estimate changes so withholding can be adjusted.
- Keep pay records and benefit notices; reconcile withheld months with the later post-FRA recalculation.
Couples need a joint claiming plan
A married couple should model four separate streams: each worker’s own retirement benefit, any spousal benefit, the survivor benefit after the first death, and the effect of continued work. Looking only at the larger earner’s monthly check can hide the income risk faced by the spouse who lives longer.

Deemed filing and the limits on “spousal now, own later”
Deemed-filing rules generally require a person who is eligible for both a worker benefit and a spousal benefit to file for both when applying for one. The broad strategy of taking a spousal benefit while allowing one’s own retirement benefit to grow is therefore not generally available to people who turned 62 on or after January 2, 2016. Exceptions and specialized eligibility situations make an individual estimate essential; do not rely on an old claiming tactic without checking the current rules for your birth date and family circumstances.
Questions to put on the couple’s worksheet
- What is each person’s estimated benefit at 62, FRA and 70?
- Which spouse has the larger record, and what monthly amount could remain for the survivor?
- Would either spouse continue working, and could the earnings test withhold benefits?
- How many years of liquid savings can fund a delay without forcing high-interest borrowing or an unsustainable withdrawal rate?
- How will taxable Social Security, withdrawals from retirement accounts and other income interact?
- What happens to housing, insurance premiums and essential bills after the first death?
SSA’s filing-rules planner describes when to start as “a personal decision.” In practice, the decision is personal and joint: a higher earner’s delay can function as survivor-income insurance, while an earlier claim may be rational when health, cash-flow or employment circumstances point the other way.
What happens to a spouse’s benefit when you die
The survivor question is different from the spousal question. A living spouse may qualify for a spousal benefit under the program’s rules; after a worker dies, an eligible surviving spouse may receive a survivor benefit based on the deceased worker’s record. The amount and timing depend on factors such as the deceased worker’s claiming choice, the survivor’s age when claiming and family eligibility.

For planning, obtain the survivor estimate rather than assuming the surviving spouse will keep two checks. A couple should identify which expenses must continue after the first death and whether savings, insurance or the higher earner’s delayed benefit will cover the reduction in household income.
Will Social Security run out before you retire?
“Run out” is an imprecise description of the financing outlook. The SSA’s 2025 Trustees projection says the combined Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI) reserves could be depleted in 2034. Under current law, dedicated revenue would then cover about 81% of scheduled benefits. The OASI reserve alone is projected to deplete in 2033, with about 77% of scheduled retirement and survivor benefits payable at that point.
Those are projections, not a promise that checks stop on the depletion date. Legislation, payroll-tax revenue, benefit rules and economic conditions can change the outcome. A prudent plan can acknowledge the uncertainty without assuming either zero benefits or an unchanged schedule: run a household budget under the scheduled estimate and a reduced-payable scenario, then test whether savings or a later claiming age closes the gap.

The program is already central to retirement income. SSA reported 70.451 million beneficiaries on December 31, 2025, including 53.625 million retired workers receiving an average $2,071 per month. The scale makes policy changes consequential, but it does not answer the claiming decision for any one household.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Medicare fits into the timing decision
Social Security and Medicare enrollment can intersect before a person files. SSA says people who claim Social Security before 65 are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare at 65. Someone with employer group health coverage should consult the employer’s personnel or benefits office before enrolling in Part B, because the size and source of that coverage can affect the appropriate enrollment path and potential penalties.

Include premiums, health savings account rules, employer coverage and the timing of retirement in the same cash-flow model as the Social Security claim. A larger delayed benefit may not compensate for a preventable coverage mistake, and a decision to keep working can change the Medicare coordination question.

Get an estimate based on your real record
- Create or sign in to my Social Security. Use the SSA account to view the earnings record and the retirement estimate generated from it.
- Audit the earnings history. Check every year for missing or incorrect wages. An error can change the estimate, and correcting records is easier before filing.
- Compare application dates. Run the estimate at 62, at FRA and at 70, and save the monthly amounts and assumptions for each.
- Run the official calculators. SSA provides tools for retirement, spouse, survivor, delayed-retirement and earnings-test calculations. Use the earnings-test tool if wages will continue before FRA.
- Build a two-person scenario. Add taxes, withdrawals, health premiums, work income, longevity assumptions and the survivor’s post-death budget.
- Coordinate Medicare. Confirm the Part B approach with the employer benefits office when group coverage is involved, and calendar enrollment deadlines.
- Document the decision. Record the intended filing dates, passwords and account contacts, the survivor plan and the assumptions that would cause a review.
When professional help is worthwhile
A fee-only retirement-income planner or tax professional can be useful when a household has a large age gap, substantial wages after claiming, complex marital history, a disability or survivor claim, concentrated taxable income, or competing Medicare and health-savings-account rules. Bring the SSA estimates and earnings record to the meeting; advice based on a generic benefit is weaker than advice based on the official data.
The most productive family conversation is concrete: “Here is each estimate, here is the cash needed until 70, here is the survivor budget, and here is what we will do if work or health changes.” Saying those numbers out loud turns a taboo into a decision the household can revisit.
