The Mississippi healthcare provider behind the “900k impacted” headline is Singing River Health System (SRHS), including its wholly owned subsidiary Singing River Gulfport. Maine’s Attorney General filing reports 895,204 people affected—not exactly 900,000. If you received a notice, use the individual letter to confirm whether your information may have been involved and to access the provider’s offered assistance.

What happened at Singing River Health System?

Singing River Health System said it experienced a ransomware attack on August 19, 2023. Its investigation identified unauthorized access in its environment between August 16 and August 18. Separately, Maine’s Attorney General filing classifies the event as an external system breach (hacking), records August 19 as the breach date, and lists December 18, 2023 as the discovery date. These are milestones reported in different records, not interchangeable dates. Maine Attorney General filing; Singing River notice.

The Maine filing reports 895,204 people affected, including 25 Maine residents. Singing River’s notice is labeled as updated May 13, 2024, and the filing says written notifications began that day. SecurityWeek reported that letters started May 13 and that the estimated count had increased from an earlier 252,890 to 895,204; that is secondary reporting about the notification, rather than independent forensic verification. What information may have been involved?

Singing River said potentially impacted information could include names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical information, and health information. The notice does not mean every listed category applied to every person; refer to your own letter for information specific to your circumstances.

The health system said it had no indication or evidence of misuse when it issued its notice. That statement describes what the organization knew at that time; it is not a guarantee that misuse did not occur or cannot occur later. The sources cited here do not establish an independent finding of identity theft or fraud resulting from this incident.

How to tell whether your information was affected

The aggregate figure in the state filing cannot identify any particular person. Check whether you received a letter from Singing River Health System or Singing River Gulfport and read it for the information categories and enrollment instructions that apply to you. If you are unsure whether a letter is genuine or have questions about your status, use the assistance contact shown on the provider’s current notice or contact the health system through its official website.

What to do if you received a notice

Review accounts and health-insurance records

  • Review bank and other financial accounts, explanations of benefits, and credit reports for activity you do not recognize.
  • Report suspicious activity promptly to the relevant financial institution, insurer, or other organization.
  • Use contact details from official statements or websites—not an unexpected message asking you to disclose sensitive information.

Singing River’s notice specifically encouraged potentially affected people to check these records and report suspicious activity to the affiliated institutions. Read the provider’s notice.

Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze

The notice describes a fraud alert as a request that creditors take steps to verify identity before opening new credit. It says an initial alert lasts one year and an extended alert lasts seven years for people who are identity-theft victims. A credit freeze restricts access to a credit report, which can make it harder for new creditors to review it; the notice warns that a freeze may delay or interfere with applications for new credit. The notice says freezes are free under federal law. These are the notice’s descriptions; check current guidance from official credit-reporting and government resources before acting, because rules and procedures can change.

Check the letter for the complimentary offer

Singing River said recipients could enroll in complimentary credit-monitoring and identity-restoration services with the access code in their letter. SecurityWeek described the offer as 12 months of credit monitoring in its 2024 report. Availability now may differ, so check the instructions and deadline in your own notice rather than assuming enrollment remains open.

Use the assistance contact carefully

The 2024 notice listed a dedicated assistance line, 1-888-996-3921, with weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time. Contact details or hours may have changed; verify them against the current official notice before calling. Singing River also reported that some letters mailed in January 2024 had mismatched recipient names and addresses, and said it was correcting and reissuing them while maintaining that affected households were correctly targeted. If your letter has an apparent mismatch, confirm your status directly with the provider using current official contact information.

What the reported total does—and does not—tell you

The 895,204 figure is the count reported in Maine’s filing, not a list that lets the public determine who was affected. The filing’s 25 Maine residents are a state-specific subset of that reported total, while the provider’s notice identifies both Singing River Health System and Singing River Gulfport. Neither the rounded “900k” headline nor the aggregate count says whether a particular reader received a notice or which data categories applied to them.

The sources cited above document the reported incident and the provider’s notice. They do not establish whether litigation or a settlement exists, whether the complimentary service is still available in October 2026, or whether Singing River has issued a later incident update.
