You cannot natively stake XRP on the XRP Ledger. The network does not use proof-of-stake, so XRP holders cannot lock or delegate coins to validators for protocol staking rewards. A platform that pays interest on deposited XRP is offering a separate lending or yield arrangement, with its own custody, credit, liquidity and insolvency risks.
The practical choice is therefore not “which XRP validator should I stake with?” It is whether to accept third-party risk for a possible return, investigate an XRPL lending application only after confirming that it is live and accessible, or keep XRP in self-custody without yield.

Why XRP cannot be staked on the XRP Ledger
Staking normally refers to proof-of-stake: token holders lock or delegate assets, validators use that economic stake to help secure the network, and the protocol distributes rewards. XRP Ledger consensus works differently.
XRPL validators communicate to agree on the transactions that should enter the next ledger version. When the required supermajority of participating peers agrees, the ledger is validated. The XRP in a holder’s wallet is not delegated to a validator and does not become collateral for consensus. Validators therefore do not pay XRP holders a native staking yield.
#1 Best Overall
The official XRP Ledger consensus documentation has historically described a threshold of at least 80% peer agreement for validation. That figure appears in a footnote dated November 2014, and the documentation says the threshold can change. It is a consensus parameter, not an annual percentage yield and not a promise of income.
A November 2025 registration statement for Canary XRP Trust states the distinction plainly: “The XRP Ledger does not use proof-of-stake validation.” Running a validator can support the network, but it does not turn a holder’s XRP balance into a staking position or create an automatic protocol reward.
What people mean when they ask to “earn” XRP
Searches such as “Can I earn yield or stake XRP?” combine two different ideas. You might receive additional XRP, receive another asset, or receive interest calculated in a currency while the market value of your original XRP changes. None of those outcomes, by themselves, proves that the return is protocol staking.
For XRP, an advertised “earn” balance generally comes from a company lending the asset, deploying it in another strategy, paying a promotional subsidy, or sharing revenue. The return depends on the provider’s contracts and finances rather than XRPL consensus. Treat the word staking as a warning to inspect the underlying transaction, not as a technical description.

Option 1: a centralized XRP interest product
Some centralized services may offer interest on XRP deposits. The service might lend the coins to borrowers, use them in a trading or liquidity operation, or apply another internal strategy. You are not helping XRPL validate ledgers; you are entering a private arrangement with the service.
Questions to answer before depositing
- Who controls the keys? If the platform holds the XRP, you no longer have direct self-custody during the program.
- What generates the payment? Read whether the provider lends assets, deploys them elsewhere, or funds the return from a promotion. A quoted APY is not a protocol reward.
- Can the provider re-lend the coins? Look for terms covering rehypothecation, collateral, permitted counterparties and use of customer assets.
- How do withdrawals work? Check notice periods, fixed terms, minimum balances, suspension rights and whether withdrawals can be delayed during market stress.
- What happens on default or insolvency? Determine whether customers have a secured claim, an unsecured claim, or a contractual right that depends on assets remaining available.
- Which law and regulator apply? Eligibility, disclosures and recovery rights vary by country and by the legal entity that accepts the deposit.
Loss of self-custody and counterparty exposure are the central trade-offs identified by Ledger’s explanation of crypto interest products. A high rate cannot remove the possibility that the platform, a borrower or a related entity fails. Do not describe any quoted rate as guaranteed, permanent or available to every reader unless the provider’s current official terms establish those facts.
Option 2: the XRPL Lending Protocol
XRPL documentation describes a native Lending Protocol primitive for fixed-term, uncollateralized loans. Assets are pooled in a Single Asset Vault. Depositors contribute assets, a loan broker creates and manages the vault and loans, and borrowers repay according to the agreed terms.

- A vault is created. A broker establishes the Single Asset Vault and defines the lending arrangement.
- Depositors provide assets. A participant contributes the supported asset to the pool rather than delegating XRP to a consensus validator.
- Borrowers receive fixed-term loans. The loans are uncollateralized at the protocol level, so repayment depends on underwriting and borrower performance.
- Off-chain risk management evaluates borrowers. The design relies on underwriting outside the ledger to assess creditworthiness and manage risk.
- Repayments are allocated under the loan terms. Interest and principal flow back through the vault according to its rules, subject to defaults and other contractual conditions.
First-loss capital can be added as a buffer for missed payments. It may absorb some losses before depositors do, but the documentation expressly says it does not eliminate credit risk. The implementation also does not provide automated on-chain collateral and liquidation management.

Asset-specific controls matter as well. Depending on the asset, an issuer may have the ability to freeze or claw back tokens. That is separate from the borrower’s credit risk and should be part of any vault analysis.
Documentation is not proof of a live retail product
The LendingProtocol and LendingProtocolV1_1 amendments are listed as requirements for the documented functionality. The existence of those specifications does not establish that an amendment is active, that a vault is operating, that retail deposits are accepted, or that a particular yield is available.
Before treating a vault as an earning opportunity, verify its current on-ledger status, operator, jurisdiction, term, deposit and withdrawal rules, supported asset, underwriting disclosures and loss waterfall. This article does not establish a live vault, current rate, minimum deposit or consumer eligibility.

Self-custody is the lowest-complexity alternative if your priority is control rather than yield. A hardware wallet and its companion app can manage XRP while you retain the signing keys. This protects you from a centralized platform’s operational failure, but it does not create income and does not make XRP a staking asset.

A safe self-custody checklist
- Buy a device from an authorized source and verify its setup instructions.
- Write the recovery phrase on a durable offline medium; never photograph it or enter it into a website.
- Confirm the receiving address on the device screen before sending XRP.
- Send a small test transaction first, then verify receipt on a trusted XRPL explorer.
- Store the recovery phrase separately from the device and protect it from fire, water and unauthorized access.
- Plan inheritance and emergency access without giving another person unrestricted online access to the phrase.
Self-custody changes who can move the XRP; it does not change the ledger’s consensus model. The balance can rise or fall in market value, but the wallet itself pays no staking reward.
How the choices compare
| Arrangement | What may generate a return | Who controls assets or keys | Main risks | Liquidity questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native XRPL staking | Not available; XRPL has no proof-of-stake reward mechanism | Not applicable | Not a supported XRPL earning method | Not applicable |
| Centralized interest product | Borrower interest, platform activity or a promotional subsidy | Usually a custodian during the program | Platform insolvency, borrower losses, operational failure and loss of self-custody | Term, notice period, withdrawal suspension and jurisdiction must be checked in current terms |
| XRPL Lending Protocol vault | Interest from fixed-term, uncollateralized loans | Vault and broker arrangement governed by protocol and terms | Borrower default, underwriting failure, broker risk; first-loss capital is not a guarantee; issuer controls may apply | Fixed terms and vault-specific deposit or withdrawal rules must be verified |
| Self-custody wallet | No yield; only exposure to XRP’s market price | The holder controls the keys | Lost recovery phrase, theft, phishing or signing a malicious transaction | Transfers are controlled by the holder and XRPL transaction conditions |
A practical process for evaluating an XRP “earn” offer
- Identify the mechanism. Ask whether the offer is consensus staking, lending, trading, liquidity provision or a subsidy. For XRP, native consensus staking is not an available category.
- Read the legal entity and custody terms. Confirm who receives the XRP, who holds the keys and what claim you have if the entity fails.
- Test the advertised return. Establish whether the rate is fixed or variable, annualized or paid for a shorter period, gross or net of fees, and denominated in XRP, another token or fiat currency.
- Map the credit chain. Identify borrowers, brokers, counterparties, collateral (if any), first-loss arrangements and the order in which losses are allocated.
- Check liquidity before committing. Record the term, lockup, notice period, minimum balance, withdrawal limits and circumstances that allow a freeze.
- Confirm geography and date. Product availability and regulatory terms can differ by residence and can change. Save the current official terms rather than relying on a search result or old rate.
- Start with an amount you can afford to lose. A small deposit cannot remove structural risk, but it limits the damage from an unfamiliar provider or process.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“I am staking because the app shows an APY.”
An APY label describes a calculation, not the source of the payment. If XRP is held by a company or lent to borrowers, call it an interest or lending product and evaluate the counterparty.
“The 80% figure tells me what I will earn.”
The historical 80% peer-agreement threshold concerns ledger validation. It is not a yield rate, and the documentation notes that the threshold may change.
“First-loss capital makes a vault safe.”
First-loss funds can absorb some defaults, but they are limited and do not guarantee repayment. Review their size, funding, replenishment rules and position in the loss waterfall.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
“A wallet that supports XRP should generate rewards.”
Wallet support means the software or device can hold and sign XRP transactions. It does not alter XRPL consensus or create an earning function.
“More XRP always means a profit.”
A return may be paid in another asset or in XRP while XRP’s market price falls. Assess both the contractual payout and the market-value exposure.
Bottom line for XRP holders
XRP cannot be natively staked. XRPL uses validator consensus rather than proof-of-stake, so holding, delegating or locking XRP does not produce a protocol reward. Earning opportunities, when they exist, are separate lending or interest arrangements that require trust in a provider, broker, borrower or vault design.
