When Windows 11 is free
Microsoft currently offers a free upgrade for an activated Windows 10 installation when the computer meets Windows 11’s hardware requirements. Microsoft says the offer has no specific end date, but it reserves the right to end it. Treat the offer as currently available for eligible devices, not as a permanent guarantee.
The upgrade normally preserves the edition:
- Windows 10 Home becomes Windows 11 Home.
- Windows 10 Pro becomes Windows 11 Pro.
Microsoft’s guidance identifies Windows 10 version 2004 or later as the typical starting point. The device must also pass Microsoft’s compatibility checks. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade guidance and Windows edition and support information.

When you have to pay
Custom-built or unlicensed computers
If you built a PC without purchasing Windows, replaced another operating system, or have no qualifying activated license, you generally need a new license. Installing Windows without immediately entering a product key does not make the installation permanently free or fully licensed.
Computers without valid activation
A machine may have Windows files installed but lack a valid product key or digital license. Check Settings → Update & Security → Activation in Windows 10, although the exact labels can vary by build. If Windows is not activated, resolve the licensing issue before assuming a free Windows 11 upgrade applies.

Current standalone Windows 11 prices
| Edition | U.S. Microsoft Store price observed August 18, 2026 | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Home | $139.00 | An unlicensed personal PC that meets the requirements |
| Windows 11 Pro | $199.99 | A user who specifically needs Pro features |
See the Windows 11 Home Microsoft Store page and Windows 11 Pro Microsoft Store page for current pricing. These are standalone retail prices, not charges for upgrading an eligible activated Windows 10 PC.
On a new laptop or desktop, Windows is commonly included in the advertised device price. That does not necessarily mean the license is a transferable retail license; OEM licensing is usually associated with the device. Verify the seller’s activation and licensing details when buying a refurbished or second-hand computer.

Windows 11 hardware requirements
A free license upgrade still requires compatible hardware. Microsoft’s listed minimums include:

- STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
- A 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores.
- A compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip.
- At least 4 GB of RAM.
- At least 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability.
- TPM 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution and 8 bits per color channel.
- Internet access and a Microsoft account for setup of Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use.
The most common barriers on older computers are an unsupported processor, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot. The 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage figures are minimum requirements, not performance recommendations. A PC can technically pass while still being slow, short on free space, or unsuitable for modern applications. Microsoft publishes additional detail in its Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements.
How to check whether your upgrade is free
- Back up important files. An in-place upgrade is designed to preserve data, but backups protect you from installation failures and hardware problems.
- Open Settings → Windows Update in Windows 10.
- Install pending Windows 10 updates.
- Check whether Windows Update offers Windows 11.
- If no offer appears, run Microsoft’s PC Health Check utility to identify the specific compatibility issue.
- If the device qualifies, start the upgrade through Windows Update.
- After installation, open Settings → System → Activation and confirm the correct edition is activated.
Menu wording may vary slightly between Windows 10 builds and regional deployments. Windows Update and PC Health Check are the safest first checks; do not pay for a license before confirming whether your existing device already qualifies.
Will upgrading erase your files or require another license?
A normal in-place upgrade is intended to transfer files and data by default, and an activated qualifying device should not require buying a second license. However, older drivers, manufacturer utilities, printers, scanners, VPN software, and business applications may not work perfectly after the upgrade.
A clean installation is different: it can remove apps, settings, and personal files. It may require a product key or sign-in to reactivate the same edition’s digital license. A digital license tied to the device may reactivate after reinstalling that edition, but a major hardware change—especially a motherboard replacement—can complicate activation.

What Windows 10’s end of support means
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to run, but ordinary security updates and technical support ended. This did not make Windows 11 automatically paid: an eligible activated Windows 10 PC can still use the current free-upgrade path.
If your computer cannot qualify, you can temporarily remain on Windows 10 while reviewing Microsoft’s current Extended Security Updates terms for eligible consumer devices. You can also replace the computer, upgrade compatible hardware, or move to another operating system. Continuing to use an unsupported system increases security and compatibility risk.
If your PC is unsupported
Some users bypass Windows 11 compatibility checks, but that is outside the normal supported route. An unsupported installation can involve driver, stability, update, and support risks. Enabling TPM or Secure Boot alone does not make an unsupported processor officially compatible, and a bypass is not a guaranteed free solution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Your practical choices are:
- Replace the computer: Usually the simplest option for an old laptop, failing hardware, poor battery, or unsupported CPU.
- Upgrade hardware: This may work on some desktops, but the motherboard firmware, processor, TPM, Secure Boot configuration, storage, and memory all matter. Laptop upgrades are often impractical.
- Stay on Windows 10 temporarily: Understand that ordinary support has ended and review current security-update options.
- Use another operating system: Linux can avoid a Windows license purchase, but check compatibility with your applications, games, printers, scanners, and peripherals.
- Buy a legitimate Windows license: Appropriate for a compatible custom PC or a machine with no transferable Windows entitlement.
Examples of what you will pay
- Activated Windows 10 laptop with a Windows 11 offer: Upgrade for $0.
- Custom-built gaming PC with no operating system: Buy Windows 11 Home for personal use, or Pro if you have a specific Pro requirement; alternatively choose another operating system.
- Windows 10 Home user who wants domain-join or other Pro features: Pay for the Home-to-Pro edition upgrade.
- Older laptop failing the TPM or processor check: A $139 license will not fix incompatible hardware. Compare the license cost with replacing the computer.
- Refurbished PC advertised with Windows: Confirm that Windows is activated and that the seller provides a legitimate license, not merely an unactivated installation.
Enterprise, Education, LTSC, school, business, and virtual-machine licensing can follow different rules. Consumer Home and Pro prices should not be treated as enterprise licensing prices. Also remember that Microsoft 365, OneDrive storage, Clipchamp premium features, internet service, and other optional services are separate from the Windows license.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check Windows Update before spending anything. An activated, compatible Windows 10 PC can currently upgrade to the matching Windows 11 edition for free. Pay for a license only when the computer lacks a qualifying entitlement, or pay extra for Pro when you genuinely need its features.
