That can affect Pell Grants, federal loans, work-study and other programs, but the institutional loss does not automatically answer what happens to every student’s scheduled or already-disbursed aid. Your result depends on the accreditor’s final action, its effective date, the school’s Title IV status, your enrollment and disbursement records, and whether the school remains open through a teach-out or closes.
Confirm the school’s status and effective date with its financial aid office and Federal Student Aid, and request written instructions before changing enrollment or accepting another disbursement.

What accreditation loss means for federal financial aid
Accreditation is one of the conditions a college must satisfy to qualify as an institution of higher education under the Higher Education Act. Federal Title IV programs are administered through that institutional eligibility. If a school loses the accreditation it needs for Title IV participation, the Department of Education can end the school’s authority to participate as of the effective date of the action.
Federal Student Aid’s September 25, 2024 enforcement letter concerning Houston International College Cardiotech Ultrasound School illustrates the rule. The letter says the school lost accreditation effective September 5, 2024, and its Title IV eligibility ended on that date. The letter states that, once accreditation was lost, the school no longer met the statutory definition of an institution of higher education and became ineligible to participate in Title IV programs. That is an institutional determination for that school; it is not a blanket ruling about every college facing an accreditation problem.

Programs that can be affected
The enforcement letter identifies the federal programs tied to the school’s Title IV participation:
| Federal program | What the institutional action means |
|---|---|
| Pell Grants | The school cannot continue participating as an eligible institution after the effective loss date. |
| Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) | Participation is tied to the school’s Title IV eligibility. |
| Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants | Participation is tied to the school’s Title IV eligibility. |
| TEACH Grants | Participation is tied to the school’s Title IV eligibility. |
| Federal Work-Study | The school cannot rely on Title IV participation for new federal work-study activity after ineligibility. |
| Federal Perkins Loans | The program is included in the Department’s list of affected Title IV programs. |
| Direct Loans | The school cannot originate or disburse new Direct Loan aid as an eligible institution after ineligibility. |
The table describes the school’s authority to participate. It does not establish whether a particular student’s payment was already validly disbursed, scheduled for a later date, returned, or subject to another adjustment. Those questions require a review of the student’s record and the Department’s instructions for the specific action.
Do not confuse a warning, probation or teach-out plan with final loss
A public warning, accreditation probation, notice of concern or teach-out plan is not, by itself, proof that accreditation or Title IV eligibility has ended. The Department has expressly said that requiring a teach-out plan does not necessarily mean an institution will close, lose accreditation or lose Title IV eligibility.

| Status or event | What can be concluded | What still needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Warning, probation or other monitoring | The accreditor has identified compliance concerns or imposed oversight. | Whether accreditation remains in force and whether the school remains Title IV eligible. |
| Required teach-out plan | The school must prepare protections for students if a later adverse event occurs. | Whether the school will actually close, lose accreditation or lose Title IV eligibility. |
| Final accreditation loss with an effective date | The school may no longer meet the accreditation condition for Title IV participation from that date, as in the 2024 enforcement example. | How the action affects each student’s pending aid, enrollment and next steps. |
| School closure | The institution has stopped operating, creating a separate closed-school analysis. | Whether a borrower meets the federal discharge conditions and how completed coursework will be handled. |
Ask the college to identify the accreditor’s final action, not merely describe a risk or pending review. The effective date matters because it determines when the institutional status changed.
Why your personal aid outcome may differ from the school’s status
Federal eligibility is assessed at the institution level, while your aid record is individual. A school can lose authority to participate without the available information resolving every student’s scheduled disbursement, attendance period, refund, return-of-funds calculation or loan status.
Pending aid for the current term
Ask whether each pending grant, work-study payment or loan has been disbursed, scheduled, cancelled or returned, and which enrollment period it covers. Request the answer in writing from the financial aid office. If the school cannot provide a clear record, contact Federal Student Aid and keep copies of your award notice, enrollment verification, payment history and correspondence.

Aid already disbursed
Do not assume that a completed disbursement is automatically erased, and do not assume it is permanently protected. The Department’s institutional enforcement example does not decide every student’s repayment or return obligation. The school or Federal Student Aid may need to determine whether the disbursement was authorized for the period, whether you attended and completed applicable coursework, and whether a return-of-funds calculation is required.
Future terms
Once a school is no longer eligible, it cannot simply continue originating new Title IV aid as though nothing changed. Ask whether you can finish under an approved teach-out, whether another eligible institution will enroll you, and what aid application and enrollment steps apply for the next term.
What to do when you hear the college may have lost accreditation
Use this sequence to replace rumors with documented facts and to protect your ability to transfer or resolve an aid dispute.

- Verify the action. Ask the school for the accreditor’s name, the final decision, the effective date and the school’s current Title IV participation status. A headline or social-media post is not enough.
- Get a student-specific aid ledger. Request a written list of every grant, loan and work-study amount for the current and upcoming terms, showing what was disbursed, what is pending, what was cancelled and what may be returned.
- Ask about your enrollment record. Confirm the dates the school reports you attended, your last date of attendance if you withdrew, your satisfactory academic progress status and any completion or withdrawal coding that will be sent to federal systems.
- Request the teach-out or transfer terms. Ask where classes will be offered, which institution will issue the credential, how your credits will be evaluated and whether your existing aid can be used there. Insist on written terms rather than relying on verbal assurances.
- Contact Federal Student Aid. Provide the school’s name, the accreditor’s action and your documentation. Ask which federal office is handling the institution’s participation and what you should do about pending disbursements or repayment notices.
- Preserve your records. Download your unofficial and official transcripts, syllabi, grades, attendance records, financial aid award letters, loan disclosures and payment confirmations. Keep communications with dates and names of staff members.
- Pause irreversible decisions until you understand the consequences. Before withdrawing, signing a new loan or declining a teach-out, ask how that choice affects your eligibility, transfer credits and any possible closed-school discharge.
If the college closes, review the separate closed-school discharge rules
Accreditation loss and school closure are different events. Federal Student Aid’s closed-school discharge guidance is based on closure and specified eligibility conditions; it is not a general promise that losing accreditation forgives federal loans.
For a borrower, relevant facts can include when the school closed, whether the borrower was enrolled or withdrew near the closure, whether the coursework was completed, and whether the borrower later completed a comparable program at another school. A transfer or teach-out can therefore change the analysis. Do not stop making required payments merely because accreditation ended. Ask the loan servicer or Federal Student Aid for the applicable application, documentation and payment instructions.

Teach-out, staying enrolled or transferring: questions to compare
| Path | Questions to answer before choosing | Why the answers matter |
|---|---|---|
| Remain at the college while it operates | Does it still hold accreditation and Title IV eligibility for your program and enrollment period? How will pending aid be handled? | You need confirmation that the institution can lawfully provide the aid you expect and that your academic records remain accessible. |
| Complete through a teach-out | Which institution delivers instruction, which institution awards the credential, what is the schedule, and how are credits and aid transferred? | A teach-out may protect continuity, but its existence alone does not prove that accreditation or aid eligibility has ended or that every credit will count. |
| Transfer to another college | Which credits will be accepted, what courses remain, what new aid application is required, and does the program satisfy licensing rules? | The receiving college controls its credit evaluation. A credential or license requirement may not be met simply because coursework was completed elsewhere. |
| School closes | What is the official closure date, what records are available, and do you meet the federal closed-school discharge conditions? | Closure triggers a separate federal process. Accreditation loss alone does not establish discharge eligibility. |
How transfer credits and professional licensing can complicate the decision
Neither the accreditor’s action nor a federal aid decision guarantees that another college will accept your credits. The receiving institution decides how to evaluate transcripts, grades, clock hours, clinical work and course equivalencies. Ask for a preliminary written evaluation before you withdraw from the original school.

If your program leads to a state license or other regulated credential, ask the receiving college and the relevant licensing authority whether the teach-out or transferred coursework satisfies current requirements. The fact that a course was eligible for federal aid does not, by itself, establish professional-licensing eligibility.
Questions to put in writing to the financial aid office
- Has the accreditor taken a final action, and what exact date does it take effect?
- As of that date, is the college still eligible to participate in Title IV programs?
- For my student ID and term, which grants and loans have disbursed, which are pending, and which may be cancelled or returned?
- What attendance, withdrawal or completion information will the school report to Federal Student Aid?
- Is there an approved teach-out? Which institution will enroll me and award the credential?
- If I transfer, what transcript, refund and loan documentation will I receive?
- If the school closes, where do I obtain the official closure notice and instructions for any closed-school discharge request?
Keep the responses with your records. A written answer that identifies the action and effective date is more useful than a general statement that the school is “working with the accreditor.”
The federal position on teach-out plans
“The Department emphasizes that, similar to requiring a letter of credit, requiring a teach-out plan does not necessarily mean that the institution will close, lose its accreditation, or lose its title IV eligibility; however, the teach-out plan will provide additional protections to students and taxpayers in the event that the institution does lose accreditation, State authorization, or title IV eligibility.”

This language appears in the Department’s discussion of its 2019 final rule. It explains why a teach-out requirement should be treated as a protective contingency, not as proof that your aid has already ended.
Bottom line for students
A final loss of required accreditation can end a college’s Title IV eligibility on the action’s effective date. That institutional consequence does not automatically tell you whether a pending Pell Grant or loan will be paid, returned or adjusted, and it does not automatically cancel your federal loans. Verify the final action and date, obtain a written student-level aid accounting, and compare a documented teach-out or transfer plan with the separate rules that apply if the school closes.
