There is no single universal credit score. The number you see depends on which credit-report file was used, which scoring model and version calculated it, what type of lending decision it supports, and when the calculation occurred. Different numbers are therefore normal; they become a problem only when the underlying report contains inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated information.
What a credit score actually is
A credit score is a mathematical calculation based on information in a credit report. Your report is the underlying record of accounts, balances, payment history, inquiries, and other data. The score is a number produced when a scoring formula evaluates that record.

Those are separate products. As the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) puts it, “Your credit reports and your credit scores are two different things.” A change in either the report data or the formula can change the result.

A 720 on one model is not automatically equivalent to 720 on another, and a raw number without its model and scale is incomplete information.

The five reasons your numbers differ
1. The bureaus may have different information
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are separate consumer-reporting companies. Banks, card issuers, collection agencies, and other furnishers send information to them, but not necessarily on the same schedule or in exactly the same form.
One bureau might already show a newly reported balance while another still has the previous balance. An account could appear on two files but not the third. Payment status, credit limits, account-opening dates, or public-record information can also differ. Since each score uses the data in the selected file, different inputs can produce different outputs even on the same day.
2. Scoring models and versions calculate risk differently
A scoring model is not a bureau. The bureau supplies report data; a model interprets it. There are multiple model families and many versions within them. CFPB notes that FICO has several versions, and those versions can weigh report details somewhat differently.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For example, two versions may respond differently to the age of an account, a revolving balance, or a recent inquiry. A model can also be updated while an older version remains in use. The result is that identical report data can generate different scores when processed by different formulas.
3. The intended loan product changes the model
Lenders choose scores for particular decisions. A card issuer, auto lender, and mortgage lender may use different models or versions designed for their products. A score intended to predict auto-loan repayment does not have to match a general-purpose consumer score.
The product purpose also affects which report and version a lender requests. Therefore, a score labeled “credit score” in a consumer app may not be the score used for a mortgage, vehicle loan, or new credit-card application.

4. A consumer score may differ from a lender-purchased score
Some services provide an educational or informational score. A lender may purchase a different model, use another bureau’s file, or obtain a score after the report has changed. CFPB says a consumer score can differ even when the same reporting company is involved.
That difference does not mean the consumer service is defective. It means the two parties may be looking at different combinations of report, model, purpose, and date. Read the service’s terms to determine whether its score is educational, which model produced it, and whether enrollment in a paid subscription is involved.
5. The calculation date matters
Furnishers update reports periodically rather than continuously. A score calculated before a card issuer reports a payment can differ from one calculated afterward, even if you did nothing else. A lender’s inquiry may therefore produce a different number from the score you checked days or weeks earlier.
CFPB summarizes the issue this way: each score depends on the data used, the scoring model, the source of the data, and “even the day when it was calculated.”
How to compare two scores correctly
Do not begin by asking which number is “right.” First identify the circumstances behind each number. Record the following details before comparing them:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Comparison item | What to record | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting company | Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, or another source | Each company can hold a different file and receive updates at a different time. |
| Model and version | The named scoring family and version, if disclosed | Formulas and weighting can vary between models and versions. |
| Product purpose | General credit, card, auto, mortgage, insurance, or another use | Lenders select models suited to the decision they are making. |
| Calculation date | The date and, when available, the time of the score | Balances and payment statuses can change between calculations. |
| Scale | For example, 300–850 or another stated range | A number has meaning only within its model’s scale. |
If any of these fields is missing, you cannot make a reliable apples-to-apples comparison. A 30-point spread may be entirely expected when the scores came from different files or models; a small spread can still matter if one report contains an error.

A practical process for finding the cause
Step 1: Capture the score’s metadata
- Open the score details or disclosure page in the service that displayed it.
- Write down the reporting company, model and version, stated purpose, calculation date, and score range.
- Check the service’s pricing terms. A prominently advertised free score can be tied to a paid monitoring subscription after a trial or enrollment.
If the service does not identify the model or bureau, treat the number as a general indicator rather than a prediction of what a particular lender will use.
Step 2: Obtain your reports from the official access route
CFPB directs consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com for free reports from the major reporting companies. Use the official site, review each report separately, and save the report date so you can match it to a score calculation.
CFPB’s current guidance also describes six free Equifax reports during a 12-month period through December 31, 2026. That availability is time-limited; check the current CFPB guidance for the applicable terms when you request a report.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 3: Compare the underlying entries
- Confirm that the same open accounts appear on each file.
- Compare reported balances and credit limits, especially on revolving accounts.
- Check payment history for a late mark that should be on-time.
- Look for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, or collection entries.
- Check for duplicate accounts or debts listed more than once.
- Confirm that a closed account is not incorrectly shown as open.
- Review personal-identification information for signs that another person’s file has been mixed with yours.
A difference in an account’s reporting date can explain a score gap without indicating an error. Focus on information that is factually wrong, incomplete, or outdated.
Step 4: Dispute specific inaccuracies
CFPB says you may contact both the reporting company and the furnisher that supplied the information. Explain exactly what is wrong, identify the account or entry, and include supporting documents such as statements, payment confirmations, or account-closure letters.
- Make a copy of the report page and mark the disputed item.
- Write a concise explanation of the factual error and the correction you want.
- Attach copies, not irreplaceable originals, of documents supporting your position.
- Send the dispute to the reporting company and separately to the furnisher, following each party’s stated submission method.
- Keep copies of your letters, attachments, delivery records, and responses.
- After the investigation, obtain an updated report and check whether the correction appears.
A score difference by itself is not proof that either report is wrong. Dispute the underlying inaccurate entry, not merely the fact that two scores fail to match.

Step 5: Recheck after reporting updates
If the difference is explained by timing, wait for the relevant furnisher’s normal reporting cycle and then check the reports again. A payment or lower balance may not affect every file on the same day. Keep the calculation date with each score so you do not compare a current result with an older snapshot.

What a lender is likely to see
You usually cannot determine a lender’s exact score from a consumer-facing number alone. The lender decides which reporting company, model, version, and product-specific score to order. It may also pull the report at a different time.
For that reason, improving the accuracy and completeness of all three reports is more useful than chasing a particular number in an app. Paying on time, correcting factual errors, and keeping reported balances consistent across files address the information that many models evaluate, even though no single action guarantees a particular score.
Putting the “one in four” statistic in context
CFPB has cited a finding that a meaningful difference between consumer-purchased and creditor-purchased scores occurred for one out of four people in the study it discusses. That evidence comes from a 2011 CFPB research report and is presented in later consumer guidance.
It should not be read as the current percentage of all consumers whose bureau scores differ, nor as a guarantee that one in four applicants will receive a different lender score for every product. It illustrates why a consumer score and a creditor’s score should not be assumed to match.

If reading or disputing reports is difficult, CFPB says nonprofit credit counselors and HUD-approved housing counselors can often help consumers access and review reports and scores. Ask what the service costs, whether counseling is independent of a lender, and what work the counselor will perform before sharing personal information.
Common situations and the correct response
“My three bureau scores are close, but not identical.”
That is usually consistent with separate files or different update dates. Compare balances, payment statuses, and the dates shown on each report before looking for a scoring-model explanation.
“My app score fell, but I did not miss a payment.”
Check whether a higher revolving balance, a new inquiry, or a newly reported account appeared. Also check whether the app changed models or whether the score was calculated after a furnisher update.
“The lender’s score was lower than the score I monitored.”
Ask the lender, if it will disclose the information, which bureau and model were used and on what date. Compare those details with the consumer service. The mismatch may reflect a different product-specific model or a later report.
“One report has an account I do not recognize.”
Review the account details for identity-theft indicators, then dispute the inaccurate entry with the reporting company and the furnisher. Do not assume the account is valid merely because it appears on one report.
Errors to avoid when interpreting scores
- Treating one number as your permanent score: scores are date-specific calculations, not fixed personal ratings.
- Assuming every score uses 300–850: confirm the range stated by the provider.
- Blaming a bureau before checking the file: a model or timing difference can explain the gap.
- Disputing a score instead of a fact: identify the incorrect account, balance, status, or personal information.
- Ignoring subscription terms: “free” score access may include recurring monitoring charges.
- Expecting an immediate correction everywhere: each reporting company and furnisher must process its own update.
The bottom line
Different credit scores are expected because the underlying reports, scoring formulas, loan purposes, and calculation dates can all differ. Before reacting to a gap, identify the score’s bureau, model and version, purpose, date, and scale. Then compare the reports themselves. If you find a factual error, dispute it with both the reporting company and the information furnisher, and keep documentation until the corrected report is visible.
