1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAmazon, Microsoft and other technology stocks fell on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025, because investors simultaneously questioned the valuations of AI-linked companies, the payoff from hyperscalers’ enormous infrastructure spending, and the likelihood of a December Federal Reserve rate cut. Nvidia’s earnings report, due the following evening, added another reason for investors to reduce risk.
The move was best understood as a repricing of expensive, AI-exposed growth stocks—not as proof that AI demand had collapsed or that an AI bubble had definitively burst. Amazon and Microsoft were still reporting strong operating growth, but investors were asking whether future revenue and free cash flow would be large enough, and arrive soon enough, to justify the stocks’ prices.

By that point, the Nasdaq was about 6% below its late-October peak, while the S&P 500 was more than 3% below its record. Those declines were uncomfortable, but they were still below the conventional definition of a market correction, generally a fall of at least 10% from a recent high. Calling the session a crash or a confirmed bubble burst overstated what the market data showed.

Amazon fell approximately 4.6%, and Nvidia and other major technology names also declined. The weakness was not limited to companies with poor results. It reflected a change in what investors were willing to pay for future growth and how much risk they were willing to accept to obtain it.
The short version: three pressures arrived together
- Valuations were vulnerable. AI-linked stocks had risen on expectations of extraordinary future growth. Any doubt about that growth could cause a large price adjustment.
- AI infrastructure spending looked increasingly expensive. Cloud companies were spending tens of billions of dollars on data centers, processors, networking equipment and power before the full financial return from that capacity was certain.
- Rate-cut expectations weakened. Futures implied roughly a 50% chance of a quarter-point Federal Reserve cut in December, down sharply from the confidence investors had previously assigned to that outcome. Higher expected rates reduce the present value of profits expected years in the future.
Those forces reinforced one another. If AI earnings might be lower than expected and interest rates might remain higher for longer, the valuation of a company whose most important profits are expected in the future becomes harder to defend.
Why did AI-bubble fears spread?
The concern followed a simple chain:
High expectations → massive spending → delayed monetization → rising skepticism → valuation compression.
Investors were not necessarily denying that artificial intelligence was useful. They were questioning whether the current spending boom would produce returns high enough to justify the prices of the companies involved.
The questions investors were asking
- Are AI products generating enough incremental revenue to justify the infrastructure buildout?
- Are cloud providers earning an attractive return on the billions spent on GPUs, data centers and networking equipment?
- Will customers continue buying AI capacity at current rates once early experimentation gives way to ordinary budgeting?
- Are some companies financing expansion through debt, partnerships or complex commercial arrangements that could make the underlying economics harder to assess?
- Could more efficient or less expensive AI models reduce the amount of computing infrastructure required?
- What happens if AI adoption slows before today’s data centers and hardware have paid for themselves?
- Can companies obtain enough electricity and data-center capacity to turn demand into revenue?
Contemporaneous reporting also identified lofty valuations, customer capital-spending risk, financing concerns and energy constraints as reasons the AI rally was becoming more fragile. Reuters’ follow-up analysis described the issue as a question of whether investment in AI would translate into profits, rather than simply whether AI technology worked.
What the Bank of America survey actually showed
A November Bank of America Global Fund Manager Survey gave the market a useful sentiment catalyst. But its figures need to be separated because they answered different questions:
| Survey result | What it meant |
|---|---|
| 45% identified an AI bubble as the biggest market “tail risk,” up from 33% the prior month. | AI was the risk investors most feared could produce an unexpectedly damaging market outcome. |
| 53% said AI stocks were already in a bubble. | A majority considered valuations excessive relative to fundamentals or expectations. |
| 53% said AI was already increasing productivity. | Many investors believed AI had real economic value even while thinking AI stocks were overpriced. |
The survey therefore did not show blanket disbelief in AI. It showed that investors could hold two views at once: AI may improve productivity, and the shares of companies associated with AI may already discount too much future success.
Survey coverage also reported that a net 20% of respondents believed companies were overinvesting—the first net-overinvestment reading since 2005, according to contemporaneous reporting. Different reports refer to different survey subsamples and asset totals, so that figure should be treated as a sentiment indicator rather than a precise measurement of all corporate investment. Bank of America survey coverage provides additional context.
Most importantly, a survey can document fear; it cannot prove that a bubble exists or predict exactly when prices will fall. The 45% and 53% figures were evidence of growing anxiety, not an objective declaration that the AI market had already failed.
How interest rates amplified the sell-off
Rate-cut uncertainty was an independent pressure, not simply another name for AI-bubble fears.

Growth stocks are particularly sensitive to interest rates because a greater share of their valuation often depends on profits expected several years from now. In simplified terms:
Present value of future cash flow = future cash flow ÷ (1 + discount rate)number of years
When the expected discount rate rises, the present value of a distant cash flow falls. The effect is greater when investors are paying for profits far in the future, which is one reason high-multiple growth companies can decline more than mature, lower-growth businesses when bond yields or policy-rate expectations move against them.
On Nov. 18, futures implied approximately a coin-toss chance of a December quarter-point Fed cut. The odds had weakened after Federal Reserve officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, pushed back against the idea that a cut was guaranteed. Reuters’ market analysis and Morningstar’s rate-market coverage both described the change in expectations.
That mattered in two ways. The numerator of the valuation debate was whether future AI earnings would be sufficiently large. The denominator was the rate used to discount those earnings back to today. Investors were reassessing both at the same time.

Why did Amazon shares fall despite strong results?
Amazon’s latest available results before the sell-off were not evidence of an operating collapse. Amazon’s calendar third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2025, and the company reported:
| Amazon Q3 2025 measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Net sales | $180.2 billion, up 13% year over year |
| AWS sales | $33.0 billion, up 20% |
| AWS operating income | $11.4 billion, compared with $10.4 billion a year earlier |
| Trailing-12-month free cash flow | $14.8 billion, down from $47.7 billion |
| Year-over-year increase in purchases of property and equipment | $50.9 billion |
Source: Amazon’s Q3 2025 earnings release.
The tension was clear: AWS revenue was growing rapidly, but Amazon was spending heavily to build the capacity needed for future demand. The company said it had added more than 3.8 gigawatts of power capacity over the prior 12 months and described strong demand for both AI and core AWS infrastructure.
Free cash flow made the issue concrete. Accounting earnings can look strong while cash is being absorbed by data centers, servers and other property and equipment. Amazon’s trailing-12-month free cash flow had fallen substantially from the prior year as capital investment rose. That does not mean the investment will fail. It means the company is spending cash now, while the payoff depends on future utilization, pricing, operating margins and customer commitments.
Amazon’s stock therefore fell because investors were asking whether the scale and timing of its infrastructure spending would produce enough incremental cash flow soon enough to justify the valuation. The question was about return on investment and timing, not whether AWS had suddenly stopped growing.
Amazon is also diversified. Its share price reflects AWS and AI expectations, but also online retail margins, logistics investment, advertising, consumer demand, regulation and other businesses. The Nov. 18 decline was primarily part of the broader AI-capital-expenditure and valuation trade, not a single Amazon-specific earnings surprise.

Why did Microsoft shares fall despite 40% Azure growth?
Microsoft faced a similar contradiction. Its fiscal first quarter ended Sept. 30, 2025, and the company reported strong growth:
| Microsoft FY26 Q1 measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Total revenue | $77.7 billion, up 18% year over year |
| Microsoft Cloud revenue | $49.1 billion, up 26% |
| Azure growth | 40% year over year |
| Quarterly capital expenditures | $34.9 billion |
| Microsoft Cloud gross margin | 68%, pressured partly by AI infrastructure investment and rising AI-product usage |
Sources: Microsoft’s FY26 Q1 earnings release and its earnings-call materials.
Microsoft said approximately half of the quarter’s capital expenditures went toward short-lived assets, primarily GPUs and CPUs. It also said its fiscal-2026 capex growth rate would be higher than in fiscal 2025. The company reported that demand exceeded available Azure capacity and that it expected to remain capacity constrained through at least the end of its fiscal year.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Capacity constraints are evidence of real demand. They are not automatically evidence of attractive shareholder returns. Microsoft still had to buy the hardware, build the data centers, pay for power and absorb depreciation before the economic return on that capacity could be known.
The two competing Microsoft narratives
Bull case: Azure demand was accelerating, capacity was effectively sold out, and Microsoft could monetize AI through Azure, Copilot and its broader enterprise software ecosystem. Strong commercial bookings and remaining performance obligations also supported the argument that customers were making substantial commitments.
Bear case: AI capital spending was rising faster than visible AI revenue, and GPU and data-center depreciation could pressure margins. Investors also had to assess whether customers would continue renewing AI services at profitable prices and how durable Microsoft’s relationships with model providers, including OpenAI, would be.
When a company grows Azure 40% but spends $34.9 billion in a quarter on capacity, the relevant investor question is not simply, “Is demand strong?” It is, “What return will the company earn on the capacity it is adding, and how long will that return take to appear in free cash flow?”

Nvidia was the most visible test of the AI investment cycle. Its processors were central to the data-center buildout, so the company’s results were being treated as a referendum on whether customers were still willing to spend aggressively on AI computing.
Nvidia was scheduled to report after the Nov. 19 market close. That timing encouraged caution on Nov. 18: investors could buy after seeing the results, but buying before the report exposed them to a potentially large surprise. Reuters’ report on the session identified the earnings event as one of the market’s immediate uncertainties.
Retrospective update: what Nvidia actually reported
Nvidia subsequently reported quarterly revenue of $57.0 billion, up 62% year over year. Data-center revenue reached $51.2 billion, up 66%, and the company forecast approximately $65 billion in revenue for the following quarter. Those figures contradicted the idea that AI demand had immediately collapsed. Nvidia’s results release contains the company’s figures.

Strong results did not settle every valuation question. A stock can rise on strong earnings if results exceed expectations, or fall on strong earnings if investors had already priced in even stronger results. Nvidia’s report supported the existence of substantial AI demand; it did not, by itself, prove that every AI-linked stock was fairly valued or that every dollar of infrastructure spending would earn an attractive return.

AI-related stocks were not one uniform category. Different groups faced different risks:
| Group | Examples | Main concern |
|---|---|---|
| AI infrastructure leaders | Nvidia, AMD, memory companies, server makers, networking companies and data-center suppliers | Customers could slow capital spending, demand lower prices or find that capacity had been overbuilt. |
| Hyperscalers | Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta | They must spend first and depreciate assets before collecting the full economic return from cloud and AI demand. |
| AI-exposed software companies | Enterprise software and workflow providers | AI agents could replace or commoditize existing software products, pressure licensing models or reduce the value of traditional applications. |
| High-multiple speculative AI stocks | Companies whose valuations depend heavily on future AI adoption rather than established earnings | A modest change in sentiment can produce a large percentage decline when there is little current cash flow supporting the valuation. |
This distinction matters. A company can fall because investors fear insufficient AI monetization, while another falls because investors fear AI will disrupt its existing business. Those are opposite mechanisms, and calling both simply an “AI sell-off” can hide the real risk.
Was this really another dot-com bubble?
The comparison was useful as a warning, but the 2025 AI market was not identical to the late-1990s internet bubble.
| 2025 AI market | Dot-com bubble |
|---|---|
| Large, profitable technology companies dominated much of the trade. | Many leading companies had little or no earnings and depended on a business model that had not been proven. |
| AI infrastructure was producing real revenue from cloud customers and hardware sales. | Many internet businesses had unproven revenue models, weak customer economics or no reliable path to profitability. |
| Valuations and expectations were elevated, and concentration created vulnerability. | Speculation spread more broadly across companies with limited operating histories. |
| Spending, depreciation, power availability and financing risks remained real. | Excess capacity and failed business models eventually exposed the weakest companies. |
The important lesson is that real technology and real revenue do not guarantee attractive stock returns. Investors can correctly believe that AI will transform the economy and still overpay for companies expected to benefit from it.
The IMF’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report warned that stretched U.S. asset valuations and concentration in mega-cap technology and AI-related stocks could make markets vulnerable to a sudden correction. The IMF’s October World Economic Outlook provided additional macroeconomic context.
Later analysis also focused on the potential scale of AI investment. Goldman Sachs examined scenarios involving more than $500 billion of AI-company investment in 2026. That is a scenario discussed in subsequent analysis, not an amount that had already been spent on Nov. 18, but it illustrates why investors were focused on capital intensity and payback periods.

The Nov. 18 event was primarily an equity-market repricing. Falling stock prices can damage investor portfolios and reduce the value of concentrated holdings, but that is different from a banking or credit crisis.
The Bank of England’s December 2025 Financial Stability Report noted that AI development had initially been financed largely through the cash flows and equity of large, profitable technology companies. That structure limited the likelihood that an ordinary stock-price decline would immediately create the same kind of systemic consequences associated with heavily leveraged financial institutions.

This did not eliminate risk. A prolonged decline could affect corporate financing, private-market valuations, equipment suppliers and lenders. It did mean the evidence on Nov. 18 pointed more clearly to a valuation reset than to an immediate financial-system breakdown.

What would confirm or disprove the bearish AI-bubble thesis?
The next stage of the story depends less on headlines and more on whether investment begins producing durable revenue, margins and cash flow. Investors assessing the thesis can monitor these indicators:
| Data point | Evidence that would support the bearish thesis | Evidence that would weaken it |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperscaler capital-expenditure guidance | Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet or Meta continue raising spending while lowering expected returns or acknowledging overcapacity. | Spending is directed toward signed demand, capacity is absorbed quickly and management shows improving returns on new assets. |
| Cloud revenue growth | Cloud growth slows materially, or AI demand merely shifts workloads between providers without creating incremental revenue. | AI adds new workloads and cloud growth remains strong across multiple providers. |
| Gross margins | GPU, power, networking and depreciation costs compress margins for longer than expected. | Usage, pricing and hardware efficiency offset those costs and margins stabilize or recover. |
| Free cash flow | Capital spending remains elevated while free cash flow falls, leverage rises or shareholder returns are reduced. | Revenue and operating cash flow catch up with investment without a significant increase in financial risk. |
| Backlog quality | Large cloud commitments are flexible reservations that customers can cancel or reduce rather than enforceable, profitable contracts. | Backlog converts into recurring revenue with strong customer retention and acceptable margins. |
| AI application revenue | Customers experiment with AI but do not pay enough to produce measurable productivity or profit gains. | Customers expand spending because AI produces verifiable savings, higher output or new revenue. |
| Model economics | Inference costs, competition or more efficient models push prices down faster than providers can reduce costs. | Lower model costs expand usage and providers retain enough of the resulting economic value. |
| Nvidia and other infrastructure results | Orders, data-center growth, margins or forward guidance weaken across several reporting periods. | Demand, revenue growth and guidance remain strong without a corresponding deterioration in customer economics. |
| Federal Reserve policy | Inflation or economic resilience keeps rates higher for longer and raises the discount rate applied to growth stocks. | Inflation cools and rate-cut expectations return without a severe economic slowdown. |
| Market breadth | Index gains remain concentrated in a few mega-cap names while more companies lose momentum. | Performance broadens to profitable companies outside the narrow AI trade. |
What the sell-off meant for retail investors
The most useful distinction is between business performance and investment returns. Amazon can grow AWS 20%, Microsoft can grow Azure 40%, and Nvidia can report 62% revenue growth while their shares still decline if the market had already priced in even better results or demanded a higher return for taking the risk.
A retail investor reviewing a technology-heavy portfolio should therefore ask:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- How much of the portfolio depends on a small group of mega-cap technology companies?
- Is the investment case based on current cash flow or on profits expected many years from now?
- Are the companies funding AI investment from internal cash generation, borrowing or new equity?
- Can the investor tolerate a large valuation decline even if the underlying technology remains successful?
- Would the investment thesis survive slower AI adoption, lower pricing or higher interest rates?
Those questions do not produce an automatic buy, sell or hold decision. They help separate a temporary change in sentiment from a deterioration in the assumptions supporting an investment.
Bottom line
The Nov. 18, 2025 sell-off showed that investors were no longer willing to accept unlimited AI spending at any valuation. AI-bubble fears, uncertainty about hyperscaler returns, weaker December rate-cut expectations and caution before Nvidia’s earnings all contributed to the decline.
But the session did not show that AI demand had disappeared. Amazon’s AWS growth, Microsoft’s Azure growth and Nvidia’s subsequent results all pointed to real demand. The unresolved question was whether revenue, margins and free cash flow could catch up with the enormous infrastructure investment—and whether the stocks had already priced in too much success.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the Nov. 18, 2025 sell-off prove that the AI bubble had burst?
No. It showed that investors were concerned about AI valuations, capital spending and future returns. The Nasdaq was about 6% below its late-October peak, but the broad market had not reached the conventional 10% correction threshold. Strong subsequent results from Nvidia also argued against an immediate collapse in AI demand, although they did not prove that every AI stock was fairly valued.
Why can Amazon and Microsoft fall when their businesses are still growing?
Share prices reflect expected future returns, not just the latest quarter. Amazon and Microsoft were growing rapidly, but both were also spending tens of billions of dollars on AI and cloud infrastructure. Investors were questioning how quickly that spending would produce profitable revenue and free cash flow, and whether the companies’ valuations already assumed unusually strong results.
What is the difference between the 45% and 53% Bank of America survey figures?
The figures answered different questions. Forty-five percent of fund managers identified an AI bubble as the biggest market tail risk, while 53% said AI stocks were already in a bubble. A separate 53% said AI was already increasing productivity, showing that investors could believe in AI’s usefulness while remaining concerned about stock valuations.
What should investors watch to determine whether AI stocks are genuinely overvalued?
Monitor hyperscaler capital-spending guidance, cloud revenue growth, gross margins, free cash flow, the quality of customer backlogs, AI application revenue, model economics, Nvidia’s forward guidance, interest-rate expectations and market breadth. The bearish thesis becomes stronger if spending continues rising while revenue growth, margins and cash flow deteriorate.
The Bottom Line
The clearest interpretation is valuation reset, not confirmed AI collapse. Real AI demand was still visible, but the Nov. 18 decline showed that investors were beginning to demand evidence that extraordinary infrastructure spending would generate extraordinary profits.
