Spending ₹30,000 does not mean two people will have the same credit score. What matters is how that balance compares with each person’s credit limit, alongside their payment history, account age, recent credit applications and the information lenders have reported. TransUnion CIBIL says its score is calculated mainly using payment history, credit utilisation, age of credit and enquiries; its calculation is proprietary, so a spending figure alone cannot explain a particular person’s score.
How can the same ₹30,000 spend affect two people differently?
The amount charged is not the same as the share of available credit used. For example, ₹30,000 against a ₹50,000 limit is 60% of that limit; ₹30,000 against a ₹3,00,000 limit is 10%. Those are simple arithmetic examples, not predictions of a specific score change. CIBIL identifies high utilisation as a potential risk signal and recommends keeping it low, but the sources do not establish a universal percentage at which a score must fall.

Utilisation can differ both on an individual card and across a person’s available card credit. To compare two reports, use the balances and limits actually recorded there rather than assuming that the amount spent is the balance the bureau saw.
What else can make their scores differ?
Payment history
Spending and repayment are separate. CIBIL says late, partial or missed payments and other delinquencies can harm a score. Two people who each charge ₹30,000 may have very different records of paying bills on time and in full. CIBIL’s report describes a month-by-month payment-history window of 36 months; that is the period described by CIBIL, not a promise that every bureau or scoring model uses the same window.

Age and status of credit accounts
CIBIL identifies the age of credit accounts as a factor. Someone with a longer-established credit history may therefore have a different score from someone with newer accounts, even if their current card spending matches. Account status also matters when reviewing a report: check which accounts are open or closed and whether the recorded details are accurate.
Recent applications and enquiries
Applying for credit can generate an enquiry on a credit report. CIBIL says frequent applications in a short period may affect the score, so the two people may differ if one has recently applied for several cards or loans and the other has not.

Why might the score not reflect a recent payment yet?
A credit score depends on information reported by lenders and processed by the credit information company; it does not necessarily change as soon as a payment is made. Under an RBI direction effective January 1, 2025, credit institutions and credit information companies must update information fortnightly, using the 15th and the last day of each month as reference dates. Credit institutions must submit data within seven calendar days of the relevant fortnight, and credit information companies must ingest accepted data within five calendar days of receipt. These are reporting and processing timelines, not a guarantee that every individual’s score changes on a particular date.

As a result, a report may show a balance or payment status from an earlier reporting period. Check the report’s dates before drawing conclusions from a score that seems inconsistent with what you just paid.

How to find the reason for a score difference
The score alone cannot identify which factor caused a difference. Compare the information in each person’s own report, rather than inferring the cause from the ₹30,000 figure:
- Balances and limits: compare reported balances with reported limits, both card by card and across available card credit where the report allows.
- Payment history: look for late, partial, missed or delinquent payments and check the reported months.
- Accounts: review account age, open or closed status and any unfamiliar account.
- Enquiries: check the number and timing of recent credit applications.
- Reporting dates and accuracy: note when information was last updated and look for incorrect balances, statuses or identity details.
Each credit information company must provide an individual with an authenticated free full credit report, including the score, once per calendar year if that person’s credit history is available. RBI’s rule provides this annual report from each credit information company, not just one report total across all companies.

What to do if something in the report is wrong
- Obtain your report and identify the specific account, balance, payment status or enquiry that appears inaccurate.
- Raise a dispute with the relevant credit information company or the bank or financial institution that supplied the information, following its stated process. Keep the account details and supporting records available.
- Check the report again after the correction process and allow for reporting timelines; a payment or correction is not necessarily reflected immediately.
CIBIL says a dispute or complaint must be resolved within 30 days from receipt by the bank or financial institution, or by CIBIL. That is the stated resolution timeframe, not a guarantee that a disputed item will be changed or that a score will rise.
Does credit card spending itself lower a CIBIL score?
Not necessarily. The ₹30,000 charge by itself does not establish that either person’s score will fall. Its reported balance relative to available credit may matter, but payment behaviour, credit history, enquiries, reporting dates and accuracy can also distinguish the two cases. No universal utilisation threshold or exact point impact for one balance, payment, enquiry or account-age difference is established here, and CIBIL does not disclose its proprietary scoring formula.
