What Southwest says drove the decision
Southwest’s rationale has two connected parts: responding to customer preferences and changing the airline’s commercial offering. The first is about giving travelers more certainty; the second is about offering premium seat choices that can generate additional revenue.

Travelers increasingly wanted a seat assignment
In its July 25, 2024 announcement, Southwest said preferences had evolved as more customers took longer flights, where it said an assigned seat was preferred. The airline reported that 80% of its customers and 86% of potential customers preferred assigned seating. Southwest attributed both figures to its own research; the cited announcement does not provide survey methodology or independent verification, so they should not be read as proof of a universal traveler preference. Southwest linked open seating to customer loss
Southwest’s 2024 One Report says customers who stopped flying with the airline cited open seating as the primary reason. That is the company’s account of customer feedback; the report does not establish that open seating independently caused those customers to leave. Southwest 2024 One Report

The airline paired assigned seating with premium seat options. Its stated business case was that this could broaden Southwest’s appeal while creating additional revenue opportunities. The company presented the change as part of a wider transformation plan intended to improve customer experience and financial performance, among other goals. What changed for passengers, and when
Under open seating, passengers chose an available seat while boarding. Under the new model, passengers receive assigned seats, with premium seating options and a revised boarding process. Southwest’s 2025 Form 10-K says boarding was redesigned based on seat location, fare bundle and loyalty-program status.

The company’s explanation makes the shift both a customer-experience change and a business strategy: Southwest says travelers wanted more seat certainty, while assigned and premium seating offer a way to broaden the product and pursue added revenue. Its cited materials explain why it made the change, but do not establish whether the new model has since improved customer satisfaction, retention or profit.
