CoreWeave’s extraordinary growth has not yet produced a profitable equity story. Revenue reached $5.1 billion in 2025 and rose another 112% year over year to $2.575 billion in the second quarter of 2026, but the company remained deeply loss-making, heavily indebted and dependent on a small number of customers. That combination matters because investors ultimately own the cash left after GPUs, data centers, power, interest and refinancing needs are paid. A large backlog can improve visibility without guaranteeing margins, renewals or free cash flow.
Why is CoreWeave stock falling when revenue is growing so quickly?
Investors can mark down a fast-growing infrastructure company when the cost of delivering each dollar of revenue appears likely to consume most of the eventual equity return. Coverage of CoreWeave’s 2025 IPO described pushback over high costs, debt and customer concentration; Microsoft supplied nearly two-thirds of 2024 revenue while CoreWeave lost $863 million on $1.9 billion of sales. The Wall Street Journal also reported that a 2025 transaction involving Core Scientific spooked investors and that CoreWeave shares fell 15% over the period.

The concern is not that demand disappeared overnight. It is that growth requires data-center capacity, electricity, GPUs and financing before those assets generate revenue. If utilization, pricing or contract renewals disappoint, fixed costs and interest remain while the expected return on the equity shrinks.
How fast is CoreWeave growing—and why isn’t it profitable?
The company’s reported growth is substantial, but GAAP losses have widened as it builds capacity and funds expansion.

These figures do not prove that the model cannot become profitable. They show that scale has not yet overcome depreciation, operating expenses, financing costs and the expense of bringing new capacity online. CoreWeave’s June 2026 filing cautions that its current business and pricing models have only a limited operating history, so investors have little long-term evidence for steady margins.
Can CoreWeave pay its debt?
Debt service is central to the investment case because cash must cover lenders before it reaches shareholders. S&P Global Ratings estimated a $7.2 billion free-cash-flow deficit for 2025, about $21.3 billion of reported debt and approximately $29.9 billion of adjusted debt. CoreWeave’s 10-K warns that debt service can divert cash from operations and investment; its 2026 10-Q says substantial indebtedness could impair financial condition, operations and the ability to raise additional capital.

Is CoreWeave too dependent on Microsoft?
Customer concentration is a direct valuation risk. The 2025 filing table shows Customer A at 67% of revenue, and a filing reproduction identifies Customer A as Microsoft. A customer representing that share of sales can influence utilization, pricing and the timing of new data-center deployments; losing or shrinking that relationship would have an outsized effect on results.
CoreWeave says its customer base is broadening. Its April 22, 2026 shareholder letter reports customer count growth of approximately 150% and says no customer exceeded 35% of revenue backlog at year-end. That is encouraging for future bookings, but it does not erase concentration in revenue already being recognized, nor does it establish that newer customers will renew on equally attractive terms.
Does a huge backlog make the stock safe?
Backlog improves revenue visibility, not certainty of profit. CoreWeave’s 2025 10-K reported $60.7 billion of remaining performance obligations at December 31, 2025, with more than 98% of revenue coming from committed contracts. The shareholder letter later described backlog of $66.8 billion. These are large contracted amounts, but they must still be delivered using facilities, power and GPUs that cost money before revenue is recognized.

Take-or-pay or other committed arrangements can require payment even when a customer uses less capacity, which supports planning. They do not guarantee that every contract will produce the assumed margin, that a counterparty will remain healthy, or that CoreWeave will have the capacity ready when the customer needs it. Investors should distinguish the accounting value of remaining obligations from cash collected today.
Is AI-cloud demand durable?
Management’s bullish case is that demand has moved from speculation into current spending. CEO Michael Intrator wrote in the April 22, 2026 shareholder letter: “Artificial intelligence is no longer a bet on the future; it is the present.” The same letter says CoreWeave secured approximately $18 billion of debt and equity capital and reduced its weighted-average debt cost by more than 300 basis points. Lower funding costs and longer contracts can make expansion economics better.
Demand can still be durable while individual suppliers face volatility. S&P said supply-chain delays deferred about $150 million of revenue into 2026, illustrating how a site, power connection or GPU shipment can shift reported results. The rating agency also called CoreWeave’s reliance on NVIDIA as its sole chip supplier a longer-term vulnerability. A delay in a new GPU generation or a shortage of power could leave expensive capacity underutilized.

How does CoreWeave compare with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle?
The relevant comparison is not simply which company reports the fastest sales growth. Investors should compare each provider on the economics and resilience of its infrastructure.
- Profit and cash generation: compare revenue growth with GAAP operating profit and free cash flow, then ask how much capital expenditure is required to sustain growth.
- Customer quality: examine concentration, renewal history, contract duration, take-or-pay language and any prepayments.
- Capacity economics: assess power availability, data-center leases, GPU utilization and the risk that equipment becomes outdated before it is fully depreciated.
- Financing: review debt maturities, interest expense, refinancing exposure and the weighted-average cost of capital.
- Supply and competition: consider access to new GPU generations and whether larger hyperscalers can use their balance sheets to build internally or cut prices. CoreWeave names AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle among its hyperscale competitors, and some are also customers.
- Shareholder outcomes: track dilution from equity funding, voting control and governance arrangements, not just the headline backlog.
What should investors monitor next?
Souring sentiment is most informative when it points to a measurable change. The next filings should be read for:
- Revenue recognized from the backlog versus additions to backlog.
- Gross margin, operating expenses and net loss as new capacity ramps.
- Operating cash flow and free cash flow after capital expenditure, rather than adjusted earnings alone.
- Customer concentration in both current revenue and future commitments.
- GPU utilization, power availability and any delivery or construction delays.
- Debt maturities, new borrowing, equity issuance and the effective interest rate.
- Evidence that customers are diversifying workloads instead of relying on one large counterparty.
The core question is whether each new dollar of contracted revenue leaves more cash for shareholders after infrastructure and financing costs. Until the answer is visible in sustained cash generation, a sentiment shift is a rational warning about execution and capital structure, not merely a short-term market mood.
