Why Some Stocks Can Benefit From Both Rate Cuts and Rate Hikes

Some companies can benefit from either rising or falling interest rates because different parts of their businesses respond on different schedules. Banks are the clearest example: higher rates can increase income from floating-rate loans, while lower rates can temporarily reduce deposit costs faster than asset yields. The result depends on each company’s assets, funding, repricing speed, yield-curve exposure and valuation—not on the direction of rates alone.

The short answer: rates affect more than one part of a company

Interest rates influence a stock through two broad channels. First, they change operating cash flows when loans, deposits, bonds, debt and other contracts reset. Second, they change the discount rate investors apply to future cash flows, which affects what those cash flows are worth today.

Those channels can point in opposite directions. A bank may earn more on floating-rate loans when policy rates rise, yet pay more to retain deposits. When rates fall, loan yields may decline, but deposit expenses can fall sooner, temporarily supporting the bank’s margin. At the same time, the market value of future profits usually changes as discount rates move.

That is why “benefit” must be defined carefully. A favorable interest-income or funding-cost effect does not prove that a stock price will rise. Share prices also reflect expected growth, credit losses, capital strength, risk appetite, the economic cycle and the valuation investors are willing to pay.

How an interest-rate change reaches a stock

Contract repricing changes current earnings

Companies with interest-sensitive assets or liabilities do not experience a rate move all at once. Floating-rate loans may reset monthly or quarterly. Fixed-rate loans and securities may not change yield until they mature or are refinanced. Deposits can be repriced whenever customers move money or banks change offered rates. Corporate debt may carry a fixed coupon for years, then become more expensive when refinanced.

The timing gap between income and expenses is often more important than the headline rate move. If asset yields rise before funding costs, interest income and margins can improve. If funding costs catch up first, the same rate increase can squeeze earnings.

Discount rates change the value of future cash flow

Investors value a company by estimating future cash flows and discounting them to the present. Higher market yields generally raise that discount rate, reducing the present value of distant cash flows. Lower yields generally have the opposite valuation effect. This matters especially for businesses whose profits are expected far in the future, even when their current interest expense is modest.

Operating and valuation effects can therefore conflict. A company might report stronger current interest income during a tightening cycle while its stock multiple contracts because investors use a higher discount rate. During easing, current revenue could weaken even as the valuation of longer-term cash flows improves.

Banks: the clearest two-way rate mechanism

Why rising rates can help

Banks earn interest on loans and securities and pay interest on deposits and wholesale funding. When rates rise, floating-rate commercial and consumer loans can reset upward. New loans may also be originated at higher yields. If deposit costs remain relatively low, the spread between asset income and funding expense can widen.

The Federal Reserve’s October 2023 Financial Stability Report described aggregate margins as relatively constant amid higher rates, with income from floating-rate loans supporting margins while many deposit expenses remained below market rates. The same report warned that competition for deposits and more expensive alternative funding could pressure individual banks. That combination explains why a broad rate increase is not an automatic advantage for every institution.

Why rising rates can hurt

Depositors can move cash into higher-yielding accounts, certificates or money-market products. A bank that wants to retain those balances may have to increase the rates it pays. If deposits leave, it may replace them with wholesale borrowing that is priced closer to market rates and can be more expensive.

Higher rates can also reduce the market value of existing fixed-rate securities. Unrealized losses may not immediately change reported net interest income, but they can affect liquidity, capital flexibility and investor confidence. Slower loan demand, weaker borrowers and higher credit losses are additional risks if tightening contributes to an economic slowdown.

Why falling rates can help temporarily

When policy rates decline, deposit costs may fall quickly, particularly if banks had raised deposit rates aggressively during the preceding tightening. Yields on existing loans and securities may decline more slowly because many assets are fixed-rate or reset with a lag. That temporary mismatch can support net interest margin.

Federal Reserve Board researchers Jared Berry, Felicia Ionescu, Robert Kurtzman and Rebecca Zarutskie wrote in an April 19, 2019 FEDS Note: “During recessions, banks’ NIMs have tended to rise for a time when the monetary policy rate has declined, as banks’ assets–loans and securities, some of which earn a fixed rate–have generally repriced downward more slowly than their liabilities, which mainly consist of deposits that banks are relatively quick to reprice downward in such environments.”

The qualification matters. The observation concerns bank margins during recessionary episodes, not guaranteed stock returns. As cuts continue, loan yields and reinvestment income eventually reset lower. Borrowers may refinance, loan demand may weaken and credit losses may rise.

Why the same rate move produces different results in different cycles

Historical experience does not support a universal rule that banks win whenever rates rise. In its 2019 comparison of four tightening episodes, the Federal Reserve reported that aggregate net interest margins rose during the tightening episode it analyzed, while margins declined overall by the end of the three previous tightening episodes.

The difference can reflect the starting level of rates, the speed of policy changes, deposit competition, loan demand and the composition of each bank’s balance sheet. A bank entering a hiking cycle with a large share of floating-rate loans and low-cost deposits may respond differently from one dependent on rate-sensitive deposits and fixed-rate securities.

The same caution applies to cuts. A bank with sticky, low-cost transaction deposits may see less immediate benefit than one that had been paying unusually high rates to attract funds. A bank with mostly floating-rate assets may also see loan income fall quickly when rates decline, erasing any funding benefit.

Four types of interest-rate risk to examine

Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC interagency guidance identifies several distinct forms of rate risk. Treating them as a single “rates up or down” exposure can hide the real drivers of earnings and balance-sheet value.

Risk type What changes Questions for an investor
Repricing or maturity mismatch Assets and liabilities reset or mature at different times. How quickly can asset yields and funding costs change after a rate move?
Yield-curve risk Short- and long-term rates move by different amounts. Does the company depend on a particular spread, such as short-term funding versus long-term lending?
Basis risk Two rates that are expected to track each other move differently. Are loan rates tied to one benchmark while funding costs follow another?
Option risk Customers or counterparties exercise options when rates change. Could borrowers refinance, depositors withdraw funds or contracts change behavior faster than expected?

These risks affect both reported net interest income and the economic value of assets, liabilities and off-balance-sheet instruments. A company can therefore show stable current earnings while its underlying balance-sheet value becomes more sensitive to a future rate move.

What the Federal Reserve’s margin evidence does—and does not—show

The 2019 Federal Reserve research note placed aggregate commercial-bank net interest margins in a historical range of roughly 3% to 4.5% over the approximately 30 years it reviewed. That is an aggregate historical context figure, not a current margin, an individual-bank benchmark or evidence that any particular stock benefits in both directions.

The note’s more useful lesson is timing. Asset and liability repricing can create a temporary advantage in either a hiking or cutting episode, depending on which side of the balance sheet moves first. Once contracts reset and customer behavior changes, that advantage can disappear.

Other businesses: useful clues, but no automatic “dual-regime” winner

Insurers and long-duration assets

The Federal Reserve’s November 2019 Financial Stability Report described life insurers as holding long-term fixed-income assets against even longer-term insurance liabilities. That structure makes duration, reinvestment and discount-rate changes important to analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, the balance-sheet characteristic alone does not establish that insurers benefit from both hikes and cuts. Rising rates can improve reinvestment yields but reduce the market value of existing bonds. Falling rates can lift bond values but make it harder to earn attractive returns on new investments and can change the present value of long-term liabilities.

Nonfinancial companies

A company outside financial services can also have offsetting exposures. It might earn interest on cash, carry fixed-rate debt, use floating-rate borrowings, sell products whose demand changes with economic growth, or hold contracts with rate-linked prices. Lower rates may reduce its borrowing expense while higher rates may increase interest income or benefit a customer segment that drives sales.

Those cases are company-specific. The available evidence does not substantiate a list of named public stocks proven to benefit under both rising and falling rates, so a business type by itself is not a sufficient investment thesis.

A practical framework for evaluating an actual company

  1. Map the assets. Identify the share of interest-earning assets that are floating-rate, fixed-rate or linked to a benchmark. Note reset dates, maturities and prepayment features.
  2. Map the funding. Separate transaction deposits, term deposits, wholesale borrowing and fixed-rate debt. Estimate how quickly each source reprices or leaves.
  3. Measure the timing gap. Ask which side of the balance sheet changes first after a 25- or 100-basis-point move. A favorable first move may be temporary.
  4. Check the yield curve. Determine whether the company is exposed to short-term rates, long-term rates or the spread between them. A parallel shift is not the only possible scenario.
  5. Assess customer behavior. Consider refinancing, deposit migration, loan demand, early withdrawals and the company’s ability to pass rate changes through to customers.
  6. Separate earnings from valuation. Model the effect on net interest income or interest expense, then separately consider how the discount rate could change the stock’s valuation multiple.
  7. Stress the downside. Include weaker credit quality, higher funding costs, liquidity needs, unrealized security losses and a recessionary demand shock.
  8. Compare the starting point. A company with unusually high margins has more room for normalization than one already operating near a low point. Read current filings rather than relying on a sector label.

Common analytical mistakes

  • “Banks always win when rates rise.” Deposit competition and wholesale funding can increase faster than loan yields.
  • “Rate cuts always hurt lenders.” Funding costs can decline before asset yields, creating a temporary margin benefit.
  • “A better margin means a higher stock price.” Valuation, credit risk and economic expectations can overwhelm an operating improvement.
  • “One policy rate explains everything.” The yield curve, benchmark basis and contract reset dates may matter more than the central bank’s target alone.
  • “A historical aggregate applies to one company.” The Federal Reserve’s 3%–4.5% historical NIM range describes aggregate commercial banks over a long period, not a current individual institution.
  • “A dated policy number is current.” The Federal Reserve’s July 10, 2026 Monetary Policy Report said the federal funds target range had been held at 3.5%–3.75% since the start of 2026. That is a July snapshot, not an October 2026 live rate or forecast; check the latest official FOMC announcement before making a present-tense claim.

Bottom line for investors

Stocks can appear to benefit from both rate cuts and hikes when different cash-flow channels respond at different speeds. Banks may gain from higher floating-rate loan income during hikes and from faster declines in deposit costs during some cuts. The advantage is usually conditional and can reverse as contracts reset, customers change behavior or the economy weakens.

Use rate sensitivity as one part of company analysis, not as a directional stock-picking rule. The decisive questions are how assets reprice, how funding reprices, which part of the yield curve matters, how long the timing advantage lasts and how changing discount rates affect the share valuation. The official sources establish these mechanisms, but they do not identify a stock guaranteed to prosper in both rate directions.
