A return can take longer when it was mailed, contains an error or missing information, claims certain credits, is amended, includes an injured spouse request, or requires identity or fraud checks. First use the IRS status tool that matches your return, then follow any notice the agency sends. A refund reduced to pay a debt is an offset, not a processing delay.
How long an IRS refund normally takes
For a straightforward electronically filed federal individual return, the IRS describes the usual period as about three weeks and says most refunds arrive in fewer than 21 days. A paper return generally takes six or more weeks after the IRS receives it. Those are broad expectations, not promises; special handling, corrections and delivery time can extend the wait.

| Situation | General IRS timing or availability | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year electronic return | Most refunds in fewer than 21 days | Where’s My Refund? is usually available 24 hours after e-filing. |
| Prior-year electronic return | About three weeks is a typical expectation | The tracker generally appears three or four days after e-filing. |
| Paper return | Six or more weeks is a typical expectation | Where’s My Refund? may not show the return for four weeks; workload and errors can add time. |
| Form 1040-X amended return | Generally 8 to 12 weeks; up to 16 weeks in some cases | Where’s My Amended Return? can take up to three weeks to display the filing. |
| Form 8379 injured spouse claim with an e-filed joint return | About 11 weeks | This is a separate review from ordinary refund processing. |
| Form 8379 filed with Form 1040-X | Up to 20 weeks | The longer estimate applies when the injured-spouse request accompanies an amended return. |
Returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) are held by law until mid-February. That statutory hold does not, by itself, indicate an error or investigation.

Check the status with the correct IRS tool
For an original individual return
Use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tracker or sign in to an IRS Online Account. Have your taxpayer identification number, filing status, tax year and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from the return. The tracker does not use an approximate figure.
#1 Best Overall
For a current-year e-filed return, wait at least 24 hours before expecting a result. A prior-year e-filed return may take three or four days to appear, and a paper return may take four weeks. Checking before those windows expire can produce no information even when the return was submitted successfully.
For Form 1040-X
Use Where’s My Amended Return? rather than the ordinary refund tracker. The amended tool reports three stages:
- Received: The IRS has the amended filing in its system.
- Adjusted: The IRS has made an adjustment based on the amended return.
- Completed: Processing of the amended return is finished.
An amended filing can take up to three weeks to appear. The IRS says there is generally no reason to call during that initial period unless the tool specifically directs you to do so.

What the ordinary tracker stages mean
- Return Received: The IRS has accepted the return into its processing system, but it has not yet approved a refund.
- Refund Approved: The IRS has completed the relevant processing and approved a refund. A personalized payment date may appear at this stage.
- Refund Sent: The IRS has issued the payment by the selected method. A bank or the postal service may still need time to deliver it.
The standard tracker usually updates overnight. The IRS advises checking no more than once a day; repeated visits do not accelerate processing.
Common reasons a refund takes longer
Errors or an incomplete return
Missing signatures, arithmetic mistakes and other incomplete information can stop a return for correction. The IRS may fix some math errors itself or send a notice asking for clarification or documentation. Do not file a duplicate return simply because the first one is taking longer. Read the notice, use the response method and deadline it specifies, and keep a copy of everything submitted.
EITC or ACTC claims
Federal law requires the IRS to hold refunds on returns claiming EITC or ACTC until at least mid-February. The hold applies to the entire refund, not only the credit amount. A later payment date can therefore be normal even when all figures are accurate. Additional review of an ACTC claim can extend the wait beyond the statutory hold.

Amended returns
Form 1040-X is reviewed against the original return, so it follows a different process and timeline. The IRS generally allows 8 to 12 weeks and says some cases take up to 16 weeks. Use the amended-return tracker and do not send another Form 1040-X for the same change unless the IRS instructs you to do so.

When a joint refund would otherwise be applied to a spouse’s past-due obligation, Form 8379 asks the IRS to allocate the injured spouse’s share separately. The agency estimates about 11 weeks when Form 8379 accompanies an electronically filed joint return and up to 20 weeks when it is filed with Form 1040-X. Those estimates reflect the additional allocation review.
Identity theft or fraud checks
A return associated with possible identity theft or fraud may require additional verification. The IRS says it will contact the taxpayer by mail if it needs more information. A slow refund alone does not prove that a fraud review is occurring; rely on the tracker or an IRS notice for that determination.
Rank #4
Bank posting or mail delivery
Once the status says “Refund Sent,” the IRS portion may be complete while a financial institution posts the deposit or the postal service delivers a check. Direct-deposit details that were omitted can also be an IRS-listed factor in a delay. These possibilities do not mean every missing bank detail causes a delay.
Use the IRS processing dashboard carefully
The IRS processing dashboard accessed October 13, 2026, listed original paper Form 1040 returns received in September 2026 and amended returns received in June 2026 as the months then being processed. This is a live workload snapshot, not a prediction for an individual case. The dashboard excludes returns needing error correction or special handling, so a return outside those months can still be progressing normally, and a return from an earlier month can still require more time.

What to do when your refund is late
- Identify the return type. Decide whether you filed an original or amended return, electronically or on paper, and whether you claimed EITC, ACTC or filed Form 8379.
- Wait for tracker availability. Apply the 24-hour, three-to-four-day or four-week appearance window for the filing method and year. For Form 1040-X, allow up to three weeks for the amended tool to show the filing.
- Check the status once daily. Record the exact wording and any personalized date shown. Overnight updates are normal.
- Review IRS mail. The agency writes when it needs information. Follow the notice exactly, meet its deadline and retain proof of your response.
- Compare elapsed time with the applicable estimate. Use the special timelines for amended returns and injured-spouse claims rather than the ordinary three-week expectation.
- Check for an offset if the amount is smaller. A past-due federal tax balance or another eligible debt can reduce the payment. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends an offset notice.
- Take delivery action only after issuance. If the tracker shows “Refund Sent,” check with your bank or household mail first. For a missing mailed check, the IRS says to allow up to four weeks from issuance before using its refund-trace instructions.
When a refund is reduced instead of delayed
An offset occurs when the government applies part or all of a refund to an eligible past-due debt. Past-due federal taxes are one example; certain other debts can also qualify. In this situation, the IRS may have processed and issued the refund even though the amount arriving in your account is lower than the figure on your return. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service mails a notice identifying the offset and the agency receiving the funds.

Compare the expected amount with the payment and the offset notice before assuming that the return contains an error. An offset is distinct from a tracker status that remains at “Return Received” or “Refund Approved.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact the IRS—and what a call cannot do
Contact the IRS when the status or a notice tells you to, when a required response cannot be completed through the notice’s method, or when the applicable processing window has passed and the tracker provides no next step. Have a copy of the return, confirmation of filing, notices, dates and refund amount ready.
The IRS states that calling will not speed up a refund. A representative also cannot create a personalized payment date before the return has been processed and the refund approved. Calling repeatedly while the tracker is updating overnight is unlikely to add information.
Preventable issues on future returns
- Review names, taxpayer identification numbers, filing status and bank-account details before submitting.
- Check arithmetic, signatures and every required schedule or attachment.
- Keep the accepted e-file confirmation or proof of mailing.
- Save a complete copy of the filed return and supporting records.
- If you amend, explain the change clearly and retain the original return alongside Form 1040-X.
These checks cannot eliminate statutory credit holds, identity verification or debt offsets, but they address the filing mistakes and missing information that commonly require correction.
Federal refund scope and state refunds
The timelines and tools described here apply to federal individual income-tax returns handled by the IRS. State revenue departments use different trackers, deadlines and offset rules. If the federal tracker shows no issue but a state payment is missing, check the state’s official revenue agency rather than treating the two refunds as one case.
A practical decision guide
| Your situation | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Current-year e-filed return submitted less than 24 hours ago | Wait until the tracker’s availability window opens. |
| Paper return submitted less than four weeks ago | Retain mailing proof and wait for the paper-return appearance window. |
| Return claims EITC or ACTC before mid-February | Expect the statutory hold; do not interpret it as proof of an error. |
| Form 1040-X filed less than three weeks ago | Wait for Where’s My Amended Return? to display the filing. |
| Form 1040-X still pending after the general 8-to-12-week period | Check the amended tracker for instructions and contact the IRS if it directs you to do so. |
| Status says “Refund Sent,” but no deposit or check | Check bank posting or mail delivery, then follow refund-trace guidance after the applicable wait. |
| Payment is smaller than expected | Look for the Bureau of the Fiscal Service offset notice before refiling. |
Bottom line
Start with the right IRS tracker, match the wait to your filing method and return type, and respond promptly to any notice. Most ordinary e-filed refunds arrive in fewer than 21 days, but amended returns, injured-spouse claims, paper filings, credit holds and corrections operate on longer or separate timelines. A reduced payment may be an offset, while a “Refund Sent” status may still require bank or mail delivery time.
