Why I’d Still Buy Broadcom While Anthropic Financing Risks Rise

My answer is conditional: I would still consider buying Broadcom, but only as a leveraged bet on durable AI infrastructure demand—not as a risk-free Anthropic success story. Broadcom has announced a financing platform intended to help Anthropic and other frontier laboratories deploy large volumes of custom accelerators and networking equipment. That could expand Broadcom’s addressable market. It also creates a feedback loop: if Broadcom helps finance a customer’s infrastructure, Broadcom may remain exposed when that customer’s economics, funding or utilization disappoints.

The key distinction is between announced capacity and realized, profitable demand. Broadcom says Anthropic is expected to access about 3.5 gigawatts of next-generation TPU-based compute through Broadcom beginning in 2027, subject to Anthropic’s continued commercial success. A separate platform announcement targets more than 20 gigawatts of enabled capacity through 2028. Those are forward-looking plans, not revenue already earned or hardware already operating.

The investment thesis in one sentence

I would buy Broadcom only if I were comfortable with concentrated exposure to an AI capital-spending cycle and with the possibility that Broadcom’s financing support increases credit and asset-value risk. The company’s custom-silicon and networking position could benefit from years of accelerator demand, while its own filings warn that an AI spending reversal, customer failures or financing obligations could reduce revenue, cash flow and profitability.

This is an investment framework, not individualized financial advice. The available evidence does not establish that Broadcom shares are cheap, fairly valued or expensive: no current share price, forward earnings estimate or valuation multiple is included. A valuation decision requires current market data in addition to the operating and financing facts below.

What Broadcom and Anthropic have actually announced

The 3.5-gigawatt TPU arrangement

Broadcom’s April 6, 2026 Form 8-K said Anthropic is expected to access approximately 3.5 GW of next-generation TPU-based compute through Broadcom beginning in 2027. The same disclosure states: “The consumption of such expanded AI compute capacity by Anthropic is dependent on Anthropic’s continued commercial success.”

That qualification matters. Access is not the same as installation, utilization, payment or profit. Anthropic could deploy less capacity, delay deployment or fail to generate enough commercial returns to support the planned spending. Treat the 3.5 GW figure as a conditional capacity opportunity for Broadcom, not as booked sales.

The AI XPV financing platform

On June 9, 2026, Broadcom, Apollo and Blackstone announced an AI XPV platform. The initial transaction was described as a $35 billion tranche intended to facilitate more than 1 GW of Anthropic infrastructure. The parties also stated an ambition to enable more than 20 GW across frontier AI laboratories through 2028.

Apollo leads the initial capital, with Blackstone and global banks participating according to the parties’ announcements. The platform is designed to mobilize institutional capital around AI infrastructure. That can accelerate deployments, but it also makes the financing structure central to the investment case: who owns the equipment, who receives lease payments, who provides guarantees and who absorbs losses after a customer default?

Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan described the platform as synchronizing institutional capital with Broadcom’s technology roadmap. That is management’s promotional characterization, not independent evidence that the targeted capacity will be deployed or profitable.

What “circular financing” means here

Circular financing is a mechanism, not a verdict of fraud. In this context, the concern is that a supplier could lend to, backstop or otherwise support financing for a customer that uses the money to lease or buy the supplier’s equipment.

  1. Broadcom supplies custom accelerators, networking equipment or complete systems.
  2. A financing vehicle, lender or backstop helps the AI customer obtain the equipment or lease it over time.
  3. The customer’s spending creates near-term infrastructure demand for Broadcom.
  4. If the customer cannot earn enough from the deployment, the customer may miss payments, seek concessions or reduce future orders.
  5. Broadcom could then face receivable, guarantee, counterparty, inventory, lease or asset-recovery exposure in addition to ordinary supplier risk.

The issue is correlated downside. Customer viability and Broadcom demand could weaken together. A transaction can produce legitimate equipment, real computing capacity and genuine revenue while still transferring more credit risk to the supplier than a conventional cash sale would.

On October 1, 2026, Cinco Días, citing Reuters and an unpublished Anthropic IPO prospectus, reported that Broadcom could provide up to $42 billion for Anthropic chip leases. The report said Broadcom could select a finance partner and that debt instruments might convert into Anthropic shares. The prospectus and full agreement were not publicly available in the cited coverage, so those terms should be treated as reported, not independently verified contract facts.

Nothing in this evidence establishes a Ponzi scheme, deception or insolvency. It supports a narrower set of questions about credit allocation, concentration, recoverability, collateral and the value of equipment if a customer defaults.

Why I still see a credible Broadcom bull case

Custom silicon and networking address a real bottleneck

Broadcom participates in AI infrastructure through custom accelerators, often called XPUs, and high-speed networking. Frontier-model training and inference require more than a general-purpose processor: they require tightly integrated compute, memory, switching and interconnect systems. Broadcom’s role gives it exposure to customers that want purpose-built systems rather than only off-the-shelf components.

The AI XPV announcement links that product opportunity to institutional infrastructure capital. If the platform helps customers install capacity faster, Broadcom could capture hardware demand earlier than it would through ordinary customer balance sheets alone.

Anthropic could become a meaningful anchor customer

The 3.5 GW TPU arrangement gives Broadcom a specific, named opportunity beginning in 2027. Anthropic’s continued commercial success is an explicit condition, so this is not a guaranteed order. Nevertheless, a successful deployment would demonstrate that Broadcom can support a large frontier-lab buildout and could provide a reference point for similar projects.

Operating cash generation provides flexibility

For the first three fiscal quarters ended August 2, 2026, Broadcom reported $32.950 billion of net cash provided by operating activities. This is operating cash flow, not free cash flow. The figure indicates substantial cash generation before considering capital expenditures, debt service, acquisitions, working-capital changes and other uses.

As of the same date, Broadcom reported $23.975 billion of cash and cash equivalents and $61.1 billion in principal amount of borrowings. Cash gives the company liquidity, but it should not be treated as entirely available for discretionary investment: debt maturities, operating commitments, acquisitions, capital spending and financing support can all claim cash.

Institutional capital can broaden the funding base

The announced participation of Apollo, Blackstone and global banks means the AI buildout is not described as relying solely on Broadcom’s balance sheet. That may reduce the amount of capital Broadcom must provide directly and could distribute financing risk across multiple institutions.

However, outside capital does not eliminate risk. Investors still need to identify recourse, guarantees, lease obligations, residual-value assumptions and any circumstances in which Broadcom must support a project after a customer misses payments.

The risks that could break the thesis

AI spending may reverse

Broadcom’s 2026 Form 10-Q warns that AI spending may not be sustainable. A market correction or a perceived AI bubble could lead customers to cancel, reduce or delay orders. The company’s warning is unusually relevant when capacity plans are measured in gigawatts several years into the future.

A slowdown would not need to destroy AI demand entirely. Even a pause in new data-center construction could leave suppliers with excess inventory, lower utilization, delayed receivables and weaker pricing power.

Customer-credit risk can move with demand risk

Broadcom says some AI customers may lack enough capital to pay for required infrastructure, including under alternative financing or deferred-payment models. It also warns that guarantees and backstops may increase counterparty credit risk and could reduce revenue, operating cash flow or profitability versus expectations.

This is the core circular-financing concern. If a customer needs financing because its own balance sheet is insufficient, and the same customer later cuts spending because its AI business disappoints, Broadcom may face weaker new orders at the exact time it is carrying more financial exposure.

Customer concentration magnifies a single decision

For the first three fiscal quarters ended August 2, 2026, Broadcom said its top five end customers represented approximately 50% of net revenue across all channels. The disclosure does not identify every customer in that percentage, but the concentration itself is material. One large customer’s product transition, internal chip design, spending pause or financial stress could affect results disproportionately.

Leases create asset and residual-value risk

Broadcom discloses that customers may seek leased accelerators or complete XPU systems rather than buying chips or racks outright. A lease can produce recurring payments, but it also leaves questions about ownership, maintenance, insurance, useful life, collateral and the equipment’s value after a default.

AI hardware can lose economic value faster than its physical life if a new architecture, interconnect standard or energy-efficiency threshold makes older systems less competitive. A financing model that assumes high residual values could therefore create losses even when the equipment remains operational.

Debt limits the margin for error

The August 2, 2026 balance sheet included $61.1 billion of borrowings principal against $23.975 billion of cash and cash equivalents. Broadcom’s $32.950 billion of operating cash flow over the first three fiscal quarters is a strength, but leverage still matters if capital spending rises, customer payments slow or financing guarantees become payable.

How I would compare the bull and bear cases

Question Bull-case evidence What could invalidate it
Is AI demand durable? Custom accelerators, networking and announced multi-gigawatt deployments could support a multiyear buildout. Orders are canceled, delayed or reduced after a correction in AI capital spending.
Are the gigawatt figures real economic demand? Anthropic is expected to access about 3.5 GW beginning in 2027; the platform targets more than 20 GW through 2028. These are plans conditional on commercial success, not installed or utilized capacity.
Who bears financing losses? Apollo, Blackstone and banks are described as participating in the initial capital. Broadcom may retain guarantees, backstops, receivables or residual-value exposure.
Can Broadcom fund growth? $32.950 billion of operating cash flow was reported for the first three fiscal quarters ended August 2, 2026. Operating cash flow is not free cash flow and may be consumed by capex, debt, acquisitions or support obligations.
How diversified are customers? Broadcom serves multiple AI and non-AI markets. The top five end customers represented approximately 50% of net revenue for the period.
Is the stock attractive? A strong operating outlook could justify a premium valuation. The available evidence contains no current price, earnings forecast or valuation multiple.

What I would verify before buying

The reported Anthropic facility is the largest unresolved item. A public prospectus or filed agreement would allow investors to verify:

  • Whether the facility is committed, optional or subject to future underwriting.
  • Draw conditions, interest rates, fees, maturity and repayment schedules.
  • Whether debt can convert into Anthropic equity, and at what price or valuation.
  • Which entity owns the chips and systems during and after the lease.
  • Collateral, insurance, maintenance and redeployment rights after default.
  • Broadcom’s guarantees, backstops, repurchase commitments and maximum exposure.
  • Whether Broadcom recognizes revenue at delivery, over the lease term or under another arrangement.
  • How receivables, contract assets, allowances and impaired equipment are reported.

I would also read subsequent Broadcom filings for changes in customer concentration, contract liabilities, financing commitments, inventory, accounts receivable and cash-flow conversion. The goal is to determine whether growth is being funded by customers’ operating economics or by increasingly complex supplier support.

Signals that would make me more or less bullish

Evidence that would strengthen the thesis

  • Anthropic reports sustained revenue growth and funding sufficient to support its planned compute consumption.
  • Broadcom reports installed and utilized capacity rather than only announced gigawatts.
  • Financing documents show limited Broadcom recourse and meaningful third-party risk sharing.
  • Operating cash flow remains strong after capital expenditures, debt service and financing commitments.
  • Revenue growth broadens beyond a handful of end customers.
  • Leased equipment retains useful value across product generations.

Evidence that would weaken the thesis

  • Anthropic or other major customers delay deployments, reduce orders or seek payment concessions.
  • Broadcom increases guarantees, customer loans or deferred-payment arrangements.
  • Receivables, contract assets, inventory or impairment charges rise faster than revenue.
  • Top-customer concentration increases while non-AI demand weakens.
  • Operating cash flow falls behind reported earnings because collections slow.
  • The $42 billion report is clarified as a large Broadcom obligation with limited collateral or recourse.

My conclusion

I would still buy Broadcom only in a position sized for AI-cycle and credit risk. The company has a credible opportunity in custom silicon and networking, substantial reported operating cash generation and announced access to institutional capital. Those strengths support a long-term bull case.

But I would not treat the Anthropic relationship as a guaranteed order book, and I would not dismiss the circular-financing concern as mere headline noise. The reported up-to-$42 billion facility is secondary, its full terms are not public in the cited coverage, and Broadcom’s own Form 10-Q acknowledges the exact failure modes investors should examine: customers unable to fund infrastructure, alternative financing, guarantees, counterparty risk and an AI spending reversal.

That leaves a conditional thesis: Broadcom is attractive if AI deployments become utilized, commercially productive and independently financeable. If growth instead depends on Broadcom continually helping customers pay for Broadcom’s own equipment, the same structure that accelerates demand could magnify losses.
